Artist Pam Glick is the quintessential gritty New York artist. Born in Albany and raised partly on an aristocrat's estate in England, she spent her rebellious teen years smoking pot and hitchhiking in search of Woody Guthrie while her glamorous laissez-faire parents imbued her with the confidence and optimism that has seen her through the many chapters in her extraordinary life, including living and working in New York - where she would hang out in cafes chatting to the likes of Quentin Crisp, and where she had a basement studio next to Richard Prince - to raising kids, divorce and surviving cancer. Through it all, she has never stopped creating. Known for her instinctive use of colour and emotionally resonant abstraction, Glick studied Painting at the Rhode Island School of Design, where she received the Florence Leif Award, and later earned her MFA from the University of Buffalo. Her work was widely shown throughout the 1980s and 1990s, with solo exhibitions in New York and Los Angeles. Her paintings have also featured in group exhibitions at Pat Hearn Gallery, the Drawing Center, and the Buffalo AKG Art Museum. More recently, she has held solo exhibitions at White Columns (2016) and The Journal Gallery, New York (2021). For this conversation, Danielle Radojcin met Pam at the Maruani Mercier gallery in Brussels, which is holding an exhibition of her work.

Staden tickar framåt i diset. Åtminstone i efterhand.

Journalist Danielle Radojcin visits British artist David Remfry in his studio, where he reflects on his life as an artist - from 60s London (Francis Bacon was a neighbour), to 20 years spent living in the Chelsea Hotel to a triumph at the Royal Academy  - and the famous people who have sat for him along the way. Born in Worthing in the 50s and raised in the northern industrial town of Hull, Remfry studied art and moved to London in the 60s, holding his first solo exhibition there in 1973. A life-threatening illness and a chance encounter with an American gallerist propelled him to fame in Los Angeles in 1980, when an exhibition of his work there sold out immediately.   He became known for his large scale watercolour landscapes and portraits, and in particular for his ongoing series of people dancing. His portraits of the fashion designer Jean Muir and the actor John Gielgud are held at the National Portrait Gallery, as well as which he has work in the permanent collections at the V&A and RA. Over the years he has enjoyed a strong connection with the USA – he spent 20 years in New York, where he lived in the storied Chelsea Hotel, often asking his neighbours, who included Quentin Crisp and Ethan Hawke, to sit for him. In 2001 he was  awarded an MBE for services to British Art in America. In 2006 he was elected a Member of the Royal Academy of Arts, and last summer he was celebrated for his enthusiastic curation of the Summer Exhibition, in which he was determined to give a voice to under-represented talent. He's also known for painting the interior of the famous tea salon at Fortnum & Mason, and a fashion campaign he drew for the fashion designer Stella McCartney. In spite of his achievements, however, he vows he'll never be part of the establishment and continues to draw - and dance - every day. In 2025 there will be a retrospective of his work in Beverely, Yorkshire. https://paulineboty.org/Gazelli Art Housemonomediafilms.london

Life on the Fretboard with Michael Watts

Bruce Springsteen and Thurston Moore adore his work and rightly so...Wizz Jones is a lynchpin of the UK folk blues guitar scene and has been since the early 1960s. When London was an epicenter for artists from the USA such as Big Bill Broonzy, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Jackson C. Frank, and Bob Dylan - Wizz was right there. Wizz was also there to hear some of the first notes Davey Graham played in DADGAD tuning, to witness the impact of a young Bert Jansch on the UK guitar scene, and to run sessions at the legendary Les Cousins club in Soho's Greek Street. It's not there anymore, of course. That end of Soho is now a preponderance of private members clubs and bijoux eateries but back in the day things were a lot less salubrious and, judging from how Wizz tells it, a hell of a lot more fun. Wizz talks about the early days of his life on the fretboard: When he was a young bohemian, the influence of Jack Kerouac on his generation, London's Soho in the sixties when you could bump into everyone from Cat Stevens to Quentin Crisp, his travels around Morocco and France, and offers the benefit of his experience and wisdom with one important caveat. Now in his 80s, Wizz can still be seen playing around London with his trademark 1963 Epiphone Texan. I caught up with him at RMS recording studios in London where Wizz has made several albums in the past. He was in characteristically fine form (the conversation is somewhat peppered with adult language). To my everlasting disgrace, I may have joined in, too. But that can happen when you're hanging out with the cool kids. Short Stories: 200 Years of the Royal Academy of Music

In the early part of the 20th century, Harriet Cohen, an Academy alumna, was a household name. Superficially known for her beauty and glamour, she wielded influence with some of the most important literary, political and cultural figures of her time – and she was a remarkable pianist. Jared, Oriana and Ned talk about Ned's choice of topic: Ralph Bakshi's animated film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. A heavily promoted effort at the time due it being both the first ever version of Tolkien's work done for film as well as due to Bakshi's notable reputation as the most well known American animator since Walt Disney and Chuck Jones, the 1978 movie was a reasonable success but not a smash, and the fact that it was only the first half of a planned two-film sequence – but not marketed as such – led to confused audiences and an upset Tolkien reader fanbase. At once a surprisingly faithful if still heavily redacted version of the book and a very unusual mix of animation styles that grew out of Bakshi's earlier movies, the film has retained a cult following since, and the resulting contrast with the later Peter Jackson movies has proven illuminating to both. What makes the sequences like the Flight to the Ford both compelling viewing and something of a slog? Which voice actors bring a notable depth to their characters along with the script and animation efforts – and which ones end up undercutting their characters completely? How does the shifting between particular animation styles, even within scenes, both act as intriguing experiment aiming to solve particular problems and yet also a confusing mess? And what is up with that incredibly generic musical score?SHOW NOTES.Jared's doodle. Jackson riffed on this scene for a reason. And Jared did bake a cake for Megaphonic's Kitchen Party! Teens are obsessed with thriving socially—so how are they so clumsy and awkward in social situations? Episode host Robin Friend, Teen Brain Trust Co-Creator and Lead Course Designer, dives into the four main factors that neuroscience can explain. He breaks down the frequently cringey process of development that the writer Quentin Crisp—not a neuroscientist—aptly described as rebelling and conforming at the same time.

For the past decade, veteran comedian and character actor Stephen Sorrentino has been a top headliner in Las Vegas and Atlantic City -- and developed a reputation as a true impressionist icon. But, as the Strip began to re-open post-lockdown, fans and locals learned that Sorrentino had packed his bags and left Sin City to pursue other projects. His starring role in the indie film "A Tale of Redemption and Regret With Sunny the Heat" is receiving rave reviews and sweeping awards on the film festival circuit. In true dramatic form, Sorrentino re-invented himself during the pandemic and is bringing the "Heat." Sorrentino is a true showman known as a comedian, singer, and impressionist, all rolled into one. Hailed by Variety for his “hilarious, show-stealing gusto,” Sorrentino has shared the stage with superstars such as Patti LaBelle, Dennis Miller, Dana Carvey, and the legendary Debbie Reynolds. However, as a 3rd generations showbusiness professional, this Long Island native always knew that he wanted to pursue a career in music and theatre, learning to play piano, sax, flute, and guitar at a young age. Stephen first stepped on stage at the age of 5 by introducing his grandfather and singing an Irish duet. By the sixth grade, he was doing mock “Tonight Shows,” where a friend would play Johnny Carson, and the young Sorrentino would portray all the other guest stars on the show. Sorrentino was involved in musical theatre during high school and college and began musical composition, eventually landing a publishing deal with Famous Music /Paramount, signing recording contracts. At Paramount, he realized that his cousin was “The Boss” himself: Bruce Springsteen. After a subsequent record release, Sorrentino formed a groundbreaking tribute act, eventually touring 25 countries and 43 states, performing for Disney, Dick Clark, and Legends in Concert, making him the # 1 Elton John impersonator in the world. While performing in Atlantic City, Sorrentino was cast in his first of 21 film roles, as a Mafia boss/drag queen in the cult hit comedy, Homo Heights (a comedy), also stars literary and film icon Quentin Crisp and actress lea Delaria (Orange is the new Black) Following the film, he studied at The Second City, with Martin de Maat, one of the most respected teachers of improvisational theatre. Since then, Sorrentino has starred in several award-winning independent films for Showtime, sitcoms for FOX and NBC, and appearances on “America's Most Wanted,” “7 Days,” and “The Jimmy Kimmel Show.” After several appearances on “Hollywood Squares,” dozens of radio and TV talk shows, and more than 50 TV commercials, Sorrentino decided it was time to create his show, Voices in My Head. Voices features 14-cast members and has toured the United States, enjoyed successful runs at the Riviera and Paris hotels in Las Vegas, and Atlantic City's Tropicana, receiving rave reviews in every venue. Sorrentino has also appeared in the History Channel's “Only In America,” with Larry The Cable Guy, touring Europe to sell houses for six straight months. Sorrentino has received the distinguished honor of being named “Male Impressionist of the Year” by the International Guild of Celebrity Impersonators and Tribute Acts (IGCITA) for three years in a row and won Best Actor in the 48-hour film competition for "The Industry." Recently, Sorrentino has broadened his horizons to return to his roots in musical theater and included a two-month run as Mr. Bumble in the Musical OLIVER and played five roles in ANNIE production with "All in the Family "star Sally Struthers.
