Hace 90 años, la tragedia se desencadenó el lunes 24 de junio de 1935, aproximadamente a las 2:55 p.m. en el Aeropuerto Olaya Herrera de Medellín, entonces conocido como Las Playas. El avión principal, un Ford trimotor operado por SACO (Servicio Aéreo Colombiano), transportaba a la superestrella del tango Carlos Gardel y su comitiva. El segundo aparato, otro Ford trimotor bautizado "Manizales", pertenecía a SCADTA (Sociedad Colombo Alemana de Transportes Aéreos). La secuencia de eventos desafortunados fue devastadora. El F-31, pilotado por el reconocido aviador Ernesto Samper Mendoza, se preparaba para despegar, habiendo sido autorizado a ingresar en pista. El "Manizales", con el piloto alemán Hans Ulrich Thom al mando, esperaba su turno. El F-31 inició su carrera de despegue, recorriendo unos 250 metros en línea recta antes de realizar un viraje brusco da la derecha se salió de la pista de rodaje sobre el cascajo y se dirigió directamente hacia el avión de SCADTA, que se encontraba a unos 75 metros de la pista. En un instante de horror, el F-31 se inclinó a la izquierda, se levantó brevemente y luego se desplomó sobre el "Manizales" a unos 50 metros de distancia, con ambos aviones incendiándose de inmediato.La colisión y el subsiguiente incendio fueron catastróficos, cobrando un total de 17 vidas. Entre las víctimas se encontraban el legendario cantante argentino Carlos Gardel, su talentoso letrista Alfredo Le Pera, y sus guitarristas Guillermo Barbieri y Ángel Domingo Riverol, quien falleció dos días después a causa de sus heridas. Solo tres personas del F-31 lograron sobrevivir al impacto inicial y al fuego: el guitarrista José María Aguilar Porrás, el secretario personal de Gardel, José Plaja, y Grant Flynn, un jefe de tráfico de SACO. Alfonso Azzaf, otro sobreviviente, lamentablemente murió poco después del accidente.La precisión con la que se relatan los momentos inmediatos del accidente —la hora exacta, el giro repentino, el impacto devastador y el rápido incendio— subraya la brutal inmediatez de la catástrofe. Esta presentación fáctica, sin adornos, intensifica la tragedia al enfatizar la naturaleza instantánea e ineludible de la pérdida. Contrasta drásticamente con la alegría y los planes futuros de Carlos Gardel, haciendo que el cese repentino de su vida sea aún más conmovedor y contribuyendo al impacto monumental de la historia al presentar el horror descarnado del momento. La tragedia de Gardel en Medellín no solo marcó un hito en la historia de la aviación y la música, sino que también se convirtió en un catalizador inesperado para la evolución del periodismo en Colombia. En Las Playas se encontraba Antonio Henao Gaviria, un periodista con experiencia en Estados Unidos, quien trabajaba junto a Gustavo Rodas Isaza en el pionero "Radioperiódico El Mensaje" de "La Voz de Antioquia" y narró telefónicamente los detalles desde un aparato público. ¿Cuánta literatura ha generado la muerte de Gardel en Medellín? ¿Por qué aún es un mito a los 90 años? ¿Qué cambió Gardel en la música?Hablemos de un artista esmerado que a inicios del siglo XX y aunque hoy, todavía se discute el lugar de su nacimiento, murió en Medellín para alcanzar una fama tal que le convirtió, en el "equivalente a un Rock Star" de nuestro tiempo.
