A special podcast exclusive deep dive into the recording career of Stephen Fearing! There's a power outage at the radio station this weekend, so no new episode will air on UMFM, however, I had some special plans this week because there are some exciting shows coming up, so I thought I'd put together some exclusive podcast episodes. Seeing Stephen Fearing at my first folk festival in 1993 was a monumental moment for me. I remember being blown away and amazed that I'd never seen him or even heard of him before. I realized that there was a world of great music that I had been missing out on, and it set me off on a path of musical discovery that continues to this day. I also vowed to some day be able to help others discover music like his, and eventually that vehicle became Tell the Band to Go Home. Stephen has been one of the most played artists on the show since the beginning, and I've been attending his shows ever since that first festival. On this special episode, we hear selections from throughout Stephen's solo career, as well as some covers, live performances, and collaborations, including his longstanding supergroup Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. Get to know Denmark's The Sentimentals on the Dec. 8, 2024 episode: https://tellthebandtogohome.com/2024/12/08/podcast-december-8-2024/ Stephen Fearing & The Sentimentals, March 29: https://www.wecc.ca/events/2025/03/stephenfearing playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-gmQ
Two guests on the Mulligan Stew Podcast Both great pals. Stephen fearing is a key member of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. Like all three members Front Line Members, they each have their own solo careers. That's one of the outstanding elements of their relationship. Freedom to create together or solo. Stephen Fearing has just released his newest album, The Empathist. Co-Produced in East Nashville with Ken Crooker (Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, Al Green, EmmyLou Harris, Steve Earle) Stephen is a truly talented songwriter, but he also carries with him, his Irish storytelling skills. The songs on The Empathist beautifully weave those skills together. Highly Recommended. Bill Henderson is the leader of Chilliwack. For some 30 years, they've been crafting hits and touring The World. As lead singer, songwriter and guitarist,t Bill has been inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock Hall of Fame and made a member of the Order of Canada. In 2025, the band is on its last tour - Farewell to Friends!! https://www.gonegonegone.com/wp-content/uploads/Farewell-Tour-Dates_Chilliwack-Site-1-7.docx https://www.stephenfearing.ca/tour Enjoy - Happy St Patrick's Day
Blackie and the Rodeo Kings are one of the most interesting bands working anywhere today. Sometimes they're in a recording studio time warp with more songs to choose from than Gabriel. Followed by tours and festivals everywhere. Then they disappear The punch line to the tale is, the Blackie guys have their own lives, careers and fan bases. What's most remarkable is, after more than 25 years, they are still a band and friends. For Example: Stephen Fearing is releasing his next album on March 13 - The Empathist. Wildly outstanding music. (We'll be talking again.) Stephen starts his Canadian tour at The Carleton Room in Halifax with two sold-out nights Feb 4-5. Kicks off album release March 13 at Mary Winspear in Sidney, Vancouver Island. Alberta dates March 21 Festival Place Sherwood Park, March 22 River Park Church Calgary. Colin Linden Colin continues to produce artists at his Pinhead Recorders in Nashville. He's also been touring with T Bone Burnett. He co-wrote and co-produced T Bone's latest album The Other Side. Next week Colin starts a new album, just in time to hit the road again. Colin begins his own tour - The Ride on Tour - on April 23, hitting Calgary on June 1 and Canmore on June 3. Tom and Terry Tom Wilson I'll just give you the short version. Re-recording songs, with son Thompson, from his play Beautiful Scars. Writing and recording soundtrack music for a number of projects including a film by Tanya Tagaq. Between his flourishing artwork, writing a new book, and starting a new album, Tom also enjoys the glow of an Order of Canada induction. That's the short version. Blackie - The Band. Plans are underway for dates in Canada. Winnipeg Folk Festival, Mariposa Folk Festival, Belmont Festival Edmonton (June 20) They are planning shows in Hamilton, Toronto where cameras will be filming. More events to come.

About 10 years ago, a stranger unwittingly revealed facts about Tom Wilson's adoption, pointing the singer and guitarist with Blackie and the Rodeo Kings towards life-changing truths about his identity. His origins had been hidden from him for more than five decades, even though a sense of not belonging and a recurring dream had made him suspect things were not exactly as they appeared. Growing up in Hamilton, he'd come to think of himself as "a big, puffy, sweaty Irish guy, when I'm actually a pretty big Mohawk guy," Wilson tells cohosts Jessica Vandenberghe and George Lee. "Now I can continue in my life, knowing the blood that runs through me, and that only strengthens my intent creatively," says Wilson, a member of the Kahnawake Mohawk Nation in Quebec. "My job now is to bring the Mohawk culture into the light, to battle whatever way I can, artistically or with my voice, or through standing as a land defender, or through starting an Indigenous scholarship, which I did at McMaster—all those ways are fighting colonialism."Find out more about Wilson, his thoughts on Canada, colonialism and identity, and his way of living a Mohawk life in this episode of Unsettled: Journeys in Truth & Conciliation. The Tom Wilson Indigenous Bursary in Honour of Bunny Wilsonhttps://tomwilsononline.com/scholarship/Beautiful Scars: Steeltown Secrets, Mohawk Skywalkers and the Road Homehttps://www.penguinrandomhouse.ca/books/531052/beautiful-scars-by-tom-wilson/9780385685672Beautiful Scars TVO Documentaryhttps://www.tvo.org/video/documentaries/beautiful-scarsThe Art of Tom Wilsonhttps://tomwilsononline.com/art/Kahnawake Mohawk Nationhttp://www.kahnawake.com/Thunder Bay Podcasthttps://www.canadaland.com/shows/thunder-bay/Thunder Bay on Cravehttps://www.crave.ca/en/tv-shows/thunder-baySupport the Show.Join our Facebook community: www.facebook.com/UnsettledJourneys/Check us out on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/unsettledjourneys/Become a paid subscriber: https://ko-fi.com/unsettledjourneysQuestions, comments, suggestions, offers to volunteer:unsettledjourneys@gmail.com

Sean Barrette is an author who has since written a book "Heartstrings - First Guitars" Heartstrings – First Guitars, is a collection of memories from a variety of musicians, famous, semi-famous, up and coming, anonymous, or otherwise, about the guitar they learned on, the first guitar they bought with their own money, the first “good” guitar they owned, or the beloved first-line guitar that accompanied them on first songs, first shows, first tours, or first recordings. These short, narrative pieces, tied together with first-time author Sean Barrette's memories of a life and career spent immersed in music, tell a story that demonstrates that, no matter the guitar player, they all have this first guitar story and love to tell it. It's the thread that ties all guitar players together, but these stories also provide insight into the very beginnings of many of the musical artists we love. It may even provide insight into the guitar player who lives with you. Or encourage someone to pick up a guitar and get playing themselves. With first guitar stories by: Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn, David Knopfler, Colin Linden (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Johnny Hickman (Cracker), Rob Baker (Tragically Hip), Paul Langlois (Tragically Hip), Gord Sinclair (Tragically Hip), Tom Wilson (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Kevn Kinney (Drivin & Cryin), Liona Boyd, Leeroy Stagger, Moe Berg and Kris Abbott (The Pursuit of Happiness), Blair Packham (The Jitters), Rik Emmett (Triumph), Finny McConnell (The Mahones), Ron Hawkins (Lowest of the Low), Dave Genn (54-40), Skye Wallace, Alun Piggins, Mark Stuart, Stacey Earle, Chris and Eleanor Masterson (The Mastersons), Preston and Alan Glass, Barney Bentall, Sean Kelly (Crash Kelly), Mr. Zero (The Kings), Jaimee Harris, Andrew Hyatt, Terry Draper (Klaatu), Dan “Chewy” Mongrain (Voi Vod), Sal Costa (My Darkest Days, Bonds of Mara), Michael Mckenzie (Lowest of the Low), François Lamoureux, Jordon Zadorozny (Blinker the Star), Ed Ringwald (Gordon Lightfoot), Joel Plaskett, Neil Osborne (54-40), Carl Harvey (Toots & the Maytals), Don Ross, Mike Turner (Our Lady Peace), Darrell Scott, Stephen Fearing (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Ethan Ives (Car Seat Headrest), Jeffrey Trott (Sheryl Crow), Julian Taylor, David Pulkingham, Brian Howes (DDT), Gary Lee Connor (Screaming Trees), Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde), Pete Yorn, Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar), David Baerwald, Pete Droge and Elaine Summers (The Sinners), Serena Ryder, Myles Zuniga (Fastball), Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo), Hayes Carll, Stuart Cameron (Crash Test Dummies), Myles Goodwin (April Wine), Brian and Bruce Good (The Good Brothers), Adrian Eccleston (Drake, The Weeknd), and many more. On the Saturday December 16, 2023 edition of the Richard Crouse Show we get to know Tom Wilson. He is a Canadian music legend, famed storyteller and visual artist. Wilson's memoir, “Beautiful Scars” reveals the impact of discovering his Indigenous heritage after a chance encounter with a stranger caused him to question everything he had always known about his past. As a musician he has won the Polaris Prize, Juno Awards, and has certified gold and platinum records. His song writing has seen his works recorded by and with artists such as: Sarah McLachlan, Jason Isbell, Colin James, Lucinda Williams, Mavis Staples as well as his own bands Lee Harvey Osmond, Junkhouse, and Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. Today we talk about creativity, specifically around a new show called “Amplify.” Each episode features a different Indigenous artist, and in his episode, Tom Wilson crafts a powerful song based on a famous painting by Métis artist Christi Belcourt. In conversation at a diner, the two remarkable artists explore their creative processes and sources of inspiration. Find the show on APTN or streaming on APTN lumi. Then, I welcome Uzma Jalaluddin and Marissa Stapley, both internationally best-selling authors, and now, bestselling co-authors of the new romantic comedy novel “Three Holidays and a Wedding.” The story takes place in the year 2000 when Hannukah, Christmas and Ramadan all overlap. It follows two strangers who meet on a plane headed to Toronto but due to the weather end up in a charming small town with all the holiday spirit. Alternating between the perspectives of Maryam and Anna, you get a story about different cultures coming together, unlikely friendships and two separate love stories

As reported in the Hamilton Spectator, less than five hours before he was charged with killing his mother, Daryl Buckle stood before a judge and explained the reason he spat on police officers with no provocation was because “a voice in [his] head told me that if I didn't do it, [his] mother would be murdered.” While Ukraine's counteroffensive advances, there is a push from some NATO members to speed up the process of getting Ukraine into their ranks. Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at https://basicfolk.com/donate/By the mid-2010's Canadian rock legend Tom Wilson's life was already pretty epic: he had perfected his blue collar roots rock sound in his bands Blackie and The Rodeo Kings and his seminal 90's outfit Junkhouse. He was a home-grown rock and roller with humble Hamilton, Ontario roots. In addition to his musical output, he had overcome addiction, he was a father, grandfather and painter. However, his life completely changed when, by chance, he discovered he had been adopted and that he was actually of full blood Mohawk descent and not Irish like he was raised to believe. His birth-mother was actually a “cousin” of his, who had been forced into Canada's cruel residential schools. The people he thought were his parents, had actually been his great Aunt and Uncle. At 53 years old, his world was about to get 100% more wild.Ever since then, Tom has been on a path to identity. He's written a memoir, made a documentary, an album as his musical alter-ego Lee Harvey Osmond and his latest project, collaborating with fellow Canadian, the Cree-Métis musician iskwē | ᐃᐢᑫᐧᐤ. Tom's new mission at this point in his life is to tell his story, “Our greatest job as storytellers is to open up the door to the next person and let them know they can tell their stories too.”Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. The name alone gets your attention. I mean, they all wear black suits. So, you may ask, which one is Blackie. They are all Blackie. Stephen Fearing, has a fine solo career with a seriously growing fan base, outstanding critical reviews and he's a Blackie. Tom Wilson is a multi-talented singer, songwriter, artist, and author. A bear of a human, a Mohawk soul, and a good man. Colin Linden is a music lifer. He's doing what his head and heart told him to do. Starting when he was perhaps 8. Colin left Canada fully formed and famous, for Nashville and set up his studio. He's been making music ever since. Solo career, writing, creating, and producing Blackie music. Produced Keb' Mo's Grammy album. Toured as part of Bob Dylan's band. So Blackie is Stephen, Tom, OK I am loading now, and Colin. Together, in spirit, in spirituality, and bound by 12 notes and the truth. New album is O Glory; Lost those blues again (Stephen spent a great deal of time teaching n the Maritimes this Summer. A few years ago we put together a couple of special episodes of Folk Roots Radio for Canada's 150th birthday. We were very happy about the way they turned out, and thought you'd enjoy hearing them again. Enjoy! We're celebrating Canada's birthday on Episode 332 of Folk Roots Radio with another special edition of the show. It's a bit of a travelogue as we start out in the east of the country and head west, but really it's just another chance for me to share more of my favourite songs about the country I now call home. This episode features music from Great Lake Swimmers, Peter Katz And The Curious, Lennie Gallant, Bob Ardern, Ian Foster, Ashley Condon, Bill Colgate, Blackie & The Rodeo Kings, Connie Kaldor, Dave Gunning, Kevin Roy, Justin Rutledge and Glenn McFarlane. If you like the artists you hear on this show and want to support them, don't just stream their music – BUY their music and then you'll really make a difference to their income during this difficult time when it's much more challenging to find live show opportunities. The Hamilton Today Podcast with Scott Thompson: As you heard in our poll question for today, the new Elvis movie has hit theaters. Being a Baz Luhrman production, it looks to be equal parts glamorous and gritty… but what does it do for audiences in 2022 and for The King's legacy? We get a breakdown of what is happening in the United States, as we learn that the U.S. Supreme Courts has officially overturned Roe v. Wade. The Hamilton Today Podcast with Scott Thompson With the Rolling Thunder protest making its way into Ottawa this weekend, we look at what law enforcement is planning, to compare with how the convoy protest was handled before and after the invocation of the Emergencies Act. What is the toll taken on the people and the government of China as the nation grapples with COVID-19, and where do they go from here? In a new piece for the Globe and Mail, Dr. David Welch highlights how former Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel has put the country in a tough energy situation, now with Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine and energy-related tensions rising across Europe. Today marks the National Day of Mourning and family support group Threads of Life is calling on workplaces to take this time to reflect and ensure their organizations put safety first for their employees. Beautiful Scars will have its first screening at Hot Docs on May 2, at 5:15 pm ET at TIFF Bell Lightbox 2. The film traces back in time to unravel musician, artist and author Tom Wilson's biographical history and eventually follows him to the Kanawahke reserve, where he explores his Mohawk heritage and meets for the first time the birth family that didn't even know he existed. Does wearing a mask change the first impression you make on people? A new study from Brock University has looked into that and it might surprise you what they have found. You may have seen him in the Americana Awards house band, or as a key live musician on the TV series Nashville or in the dynamic Canadian country rock band Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. He wasn't born into the blues but he sure found the music early and made it his own, through a very early meeting with Howlin Wolf and a pilgrimage through the Deep South in his teens. He's also been a long-time band leader and producer for Bruce Cockburn. We talk about all that, as well as the project he's just completed with fellow blues musician Luther Dickinson and others, a suite of vintage love songs called Amour. Plus, a visit with the new owner and proprietor of a revived historic studio in Nashville, the former home of Cowboy Jack Clement.

Perhaps best known as a founding member of Blackie and The Rodeo Kings, multi-JUNO winner Stephen Fearing will release his ninth studio album, Every Soul's a Sailor, on January 10th. From the anti-Trump anthem "Blowhard Nation" to the haunting and ethereal "Gone but Not Forgotten" featuring Rose Cousins, these songs span a range of styles from folk to pop to boot-stomping roots. Mike will speak with him about finding a new sound thanks to some old friends, the reception of his first protest song in years, and more. Plus, we've got some intersting stats and figures about music sales in2016 from Nielsen Music Canada. Hear about Drake's golden year, how catalog music sales surpassed new music sales for the first time, and a lot more.
Bernie Finkelstein is my guest on the show this week. It's a natural companion piece to last weeks' interview with Bruce Cockburn. If you haven't heard that one (Episode 19), please check it out as well! Bernie has been in the biz for decades, originally starting out as a helper and manager for folk artists and rock bands around Toronto's buzzing scene in the mid/late 60's. His early success in the US with The Paupers and working with the legendary Albert Grossman (Bob Dylan's manager) led him back to Toronto to start his own label, True North Records. He made his mark early signing Bruce Cockburn, a relationship that continues to this day. His other successes have included clients like Murray McLauchlan, Dan Hill, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Stephen Fearing, and he even signed a little weirdo instrumental band from Vancouver called Zubot and Dawson. Bernie has great stories from all of those eras and tells them in his recent book "True North", but it's more fun to hear him tell them in person, so Bernie was nice enough to spend some time with me for the show. Enjoy my conversation with Bernie Finkelstein!

BLACKIE AND THE RODEO KINGS originally formed in 1996. Now into their second decade and with one JUNO award and several JUNO nominations under their belts, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings has organically evolved into one of the finest roots-oriented bands in North America. They have released seven CDs and gradually developed a feeling of brotherhood manifested in a sense of groove, timberal blend and melodic and rhythmic play that is distinctive, mystical, energizing and constantly evocative. Blackie and the Rodeo Kings remains one of Canada's greatest musical treasures. Their latest CD is 'Kings and Queens' and pairs the band with some of their favorite female singers and friends including Roseanne Cash, Emmylou Harris, Janiva Magness, Lucinda Williams and more. FOLK UKE is an eclectic acoustic folk duo comprised of Cathy Guthrie and Amy Nelson featuring perfectly melded harmonies and sharp, often biting wit. The daughters of two great American songwriters (Arlo and Willie), the two were musical holdouts until they gave into the force and began writing and playing music together a decade ago. Armed with a ukulele and a guitar, this duo is a unique amalgam of angelic harmonies often wrapped around edgy, surprising lyrics. Check out YouTube for some of their more provocative songs. Folk Uke plays folk music in its truest form with a delightfully wicked twist. The duo's latest album is "Reincarnation."
