Shannon’s guest this week on the Bruce Lee Podcast has known Shannon her whole life! Diana Lee Inosanto is a lifelong family friend and Bruce Lee’s goddaughter. She is a martial artist, actress, director, writer, author, and producer. You may have seen her recently as Morgan Elsbeth in Disney’s The Mandalorian. For Diana, becoming part of the iconic Star Wars franchise seems like a dream, but it is very much the real-life culmination of 30 years of dedication and hard work as an actress, filmmaker, martial artist, former stuntwoman and now children’s book author of the book The Curious Mind of Sebastian. Diana also wrote, directed and starred in the film The Sensei. She continues to teach martial arts around the word with her husband Ron as well as fight for inclusion and social justice wherever she goes. She is a warrior woman who has certainly carved a unique and personal path in the world. Diana credits her success to having the good fortune of being raised in a charmed circle of renowned martial artists, actors and stunt-people who paved the way for so much of the excitement in today’s action filled media. Let’s listen to Diana share her warrior spirit with us as well as some great tips for staying safe on the streets for our AAPI communities and all vulnerable groups. Diana Perkey is on the run in her walk with God. Diana is a 1991 alumna of Cedarville and was recently named the Director of Alumni Engagement. She feels that all her experiences up to now have prepared her for this time.Diana compares her life with the Lord to a relay race, a continual process of releasing and receiving the baton, being faithful with each new calling the Lord has on her life. For Diana, that has included missions, with a focus on orphan care, to Kenya, Uganda, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic. She has run this relay with her husband of 30 years, Bret, but the race has not always been on smooth surfaces and well-marked trails. It’s been pockmarked with challenges, such as Bret having a stroke while cycling in 2014 or leaving the mission field in 2017 because of their younger daughter’s health issues.Through it all, Diana has leaned heavily on the Lord and watched Him move mountains, change circumstances, and thwart the devil’s attacks time and time again.“We don’t know what our future looks like,” Diana shares during the podcast. “We just walk each day literally by faith, trusting in His plan and what He’s laid out in front of us and just trying to be obedient to that next step. And we never know the twists and turns; we just have to walk.”…………God began working in Diana’s and Bret’s lives about orphan care when they were part of an Apex Community Church house church full of adoptive families.

Diana Polack is the Founder and Chief Change Officer of ArtWare for Good, the organization she started over 25 years ago to fulfill a need for fundraisers to support art departments in public schools. (If you have children, you may remember the mugs, T-shirts and note cards that proudly carried your child’s artwork and helped fund arts education in the school.  I still cherish my kids’ mugs!!) ArtWare has grown into a unique assembly of art-based initiatives that tap into the creativity of children and adults alike, building pride and self-esteem, while accomplishing important goals. ArtWare works primarily with corporations to engage employees in corporate team building and philanthropy; and with non-profits to raise funds, create awareness and thank donors. Diana continues to expand ArtWare’s scope into an organization that supports both domestic and international efforts to improve the lives of women and child through the universal language of art. “ArtWare gathers people together to get creative and do social good,” she says. CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME  Diana started ArtWare around her kitchen table as a father/daughter project for a community organization. “We made personalized T-shirts for the organizations’ members----very novel 25+ years ago.” “I saw the girls’ faces light up when they saw their shirts,” she says. “And I knew then that I was on to something.”  “Every important initiative in my life began with a feeling in my gut,” she shares.  “It was, ‘Oh my god,’ I have to do that.” As with many start-ups, in order to save money to invest in other business needs, Diana turned her home into a management and production operation, employing over eight people at one time.  “One room was devoted to management and administration,” she says, “and the kitchen was production.” After a while though, the local building department took a dim view of her neighborhood business and put the kybosh on it.  Diana initially rented space locally to stay close to her children and her home. Listen as she shares why this was so important to her as a female entrepreneur INVEST IN YOUR BUSINESS Diana is a firm believer that in business, “You need to spend money to make money.” Find out why she thinks small business owners need to invest in their businesses, and what those investments must be.  She faced financial challenges when launching ArtWare and shares what she had to do to overcome them.  Marketing is one of the most important things a small business needs to do, Diana believes.  “Keep that marketing going all the time,” she says to the small business owner. “It’s all about outflow and inflow,” she teases.  Curious?  Diana explains all in this episode.  “IT’S NOT HOW MUCH WE GIVE BUT HOW MUCH LOVE WE PUT IN GIVING”  For Diana, this quote from Mother Teresa sums up ArtWare’s mission and Diana’s personal philosophy around the work she does.  “If you feel passionately about what you are doing, and can combine this with skills and enthusiasm,” she says encouragingly, “your energy will be infectious.”  MAKING A DIFFERENCE WHILE MAKING MONEY -- WORDS OF WISDOM FOR IMPACT ENTREPRENEURS  Can you make a difference and earn a good living?  For Diana, you can do good and earn well. “It’s OK to make money, to charge for your services,” says Diana. She believes that the more money you make, the more you can create change in the world. “The bigger you get,” she says, “the greater impact you can have – so keep putting it out there.”  To learn more about ArtWare for Good and Diana: Website  Twitter

Sometimes all it takes are the right words from the right person to boost your courage and give you permission to take radical steps. Such is the experience of today’s guest, a dream chaser whose path has been anything but ordinary. Diana Cheruvil is a dynamic and goofy human whose life has been a series of fortunate events. She’s passionate about connecting with people, understanding global perspectives with a focus on local community, and striving for the greater good. She loves to build and nurture relationships in ways that bring others’ most authentic selves to the forefront. Diana’s career spans 12 years of diverse communications and marketing experience that has taken her from Detroit to NYC to South America, and back to Detroit. She has an insatiable appetite for travel, loves her super cool friends and family, gives great hugs, and has very nice hair. Following the shiny, bright object When do you know it’s time to pivot? For Diana, it was clear. She studied pharmacy at the University of Michigan, and even though she loved the subject area, her heart was not into the academics. It was clear that a pivot was in order, and her parents made the decision for her to leave college and come home. Knowing this experience would NOT be the one to stop her, she explored, settling on communications and marketing for her next endeavor. For her, living and working in NYC was always the “shiny, bright object at the end of the tunnel,” so she ran toward it. TWEET: If you fail, you fail - but fail forward. #chasingdreams Taking a chance Is it WHAT you know, or WHO you know? Diana moved to NYC (kinda on a whim), and her dreams became a reality. She says we need to realize that we don’t always have to follow a conventional path when it comes to jobs. Often it comes down to the connections you make that can be the most powerful and most impactful. Being backed by people who support you and believe in you makes ALL the difference. Creating strong relationships can help you get to where you’re going.  TWEET: “It is NEVER too late. There is so much benefit in taking a leap because you never know what will happen.” #chasingdreams What Diana learned from NYC and South America Can you look back at steps in your life and recount the lessons learned? Diana had many lessons to learn as she worked her way up from an intern to be the head of a department. She learned that one person CAN change things and make a big difference. Spending almost 10 years in NYC left her stagnant and tired, and she was dissatisfied and burned out. Her dad advised her to have courage and be bold enough to give herself permission to change her life---so she did. She spent time in South America teaching English and traveling around. This time helped her change her perspective to one of desiring a simpler life and realizing that she is capable of SO much more than what she ever imagined.  TWEET: It’s never about what you know, but it’s about the connections you make. #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”It is NEVER too late. Change is not a mental battleground, but we’re conditioned to believe it is and despite change happening every second and constantly it won’t stop. On a personal level change tends to frighten people all the time. Why because it instantly appears to mean a time of major upheaval even trauma. For Diana having experienced change in many forms throughout her life, she knows that moving beyond change can bring joy and a positive new beginning and it can for you too. Listen to Diana’s list of amazingly diverse and extreme, often traumatic change experiences and you do come to understand why this Life Change Specialist can coach others so effectively. She had to take a cold hard look at herself and what she found was a tragic young woman who carried with her for decades, the feeling she simply wasn’t good enough, she was an utter failure and that was the reason many things didn’t work out for her. Diana describes that truly pathetic experience during her early childhood, which for 3 decades had a profound affect on her life but she vowed to change all that. She remembered a thought she had 10 years earlier, if her life and who she was were to change she had to change her thinking and actions, no matter what. But how she had no idea and that set her on the path of truly understanding change and all that comes with that along with the joys that emerge like a very early sunrise – a new dawning, a new day and a new beginning.
