It jumps straight into a disaster, which is always appreciated, and the effects are still solid… there's just not enough of them. This sequel shifts focus from large-scale destruction to family drama and survival in a world that's now just as dangerous because of people as it is the environment. That could work, but it hits all the predictable disaster-movie beats and feels completely unnecessary, especially considering how the first one ended. Worst of all, for a disaster movie, there's barely any disaster.
