If you're tired of The Last of Us, well, it's really too bad. That's because Naughty Dog has updated The Last of Us: Part II yet again, this time with a so-called Chronological Mode that orders the game's chapters and subchapters sequentially. It's easy to mock this many updates, of course, but in reality, is Sony going above-and-beyond in keeping some of its older games alive? Shouldn't we applaud the years-long dedication to not only The Last of Us, but to God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, Horizon, and others? We discuss. Then: Twisted Metal's second season on Peacock gets a new trailer, STALKER 2 is finally confirmed for PlayStation 5, Final Fantasy IX Remake may be in trouble, Capcom acknowledges Mega Man, and more. Plus: Listener inquiries! If we could only play a single game-as-a-service, which would it be? Could gaming be entering a more serious phase, as the industry finds itself fused more with education? Is it crazy to play sequels without having experienced the original? What are the percentage odds Colin is on the precipice of becoming a Kingdom Hearts superfan? How do you make a spin-off of one of the most popular TV shows of all time while the original is still on the air? You show the audience what happens… at night. This week, Justin and Steve trade in their swim trunks for leather jackets and binoculars to explore BAYWATCH NIGHTS. David Hasselhoff shows us another side of everyone's favorite lifeguard, Mitch, as he starts a beach-centric private eye business, and apparently never sleeps. But no matter how good of a P.I. you might be, you'll never see the crazy genre pivot this show takes in its second season.Nobody wanted this spin-off, and the wildly successful original show didn't need a franchise. It's the TV equivalent of a waiter pouring hot fudge all over a steak you were in the middle of enjoying.BUY OUR MERCH! Today's Lake and Shed framed conversation is about J. K. Rowling's first “original screenplay,” Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Nick does his signature deep dive into the history of the Fantastic Beasts film franchise's origins in Warner Brothers' determination to keep the Wizarding World profit-pillar in their portfolio alive after the last Harry Potter adaptation — and Rowling's equal determination that they not use their copyright privilege to muck up her legacy with an Indiana Jones meets Crocodile Dundee knock-off. John takes the Shed pole in the conversation and shares his months long pursuit of the shooting text screenplay, the actual last screenplay over which Rowling had control. He lays out the (1) twelve scenes that were cut from that shooting script by Steven Kloves, David Heyman, and David Yates as they “fit the woman to the dress” of Hollywood blockbuster formula, and (2) how it made a mess of the movie's chiastic integrity. Hat tip to Kelly Loomis!New to the Lake and Shed Kanreki Birthday series? Here's what we're doing:On 31 July 2025, Joanne Murray, aka J. K. Rowling and Robert Galbraith, will be celebrating her 60th birthday. This celebration is considered a ‘second birth' in Japan or Kanreki because it is the completion of the oriental astrological cycle. To mark JKR's Kanreki, Dr John Granger and Nick Jeffery, both Nipponophiles, are reading through Rowling's twenty-one published works and reviewing them in light of the author's writing process, her ‘Lake and Shed' metaphor. The ‘Lake' is the biographical source of her inspiration; the ‘Shed' is the alocal place of her intentional artistry, in which garage she transforms the biographical stuff provided by her subconscious mind into the archetypal stories that have made her the most important author of her age. You can hear Nick and John discuss this process and their birthday project at the first entry in this series of posts: Happy Birthday, JKR! A Lake and Shed Celebration of her Life and Work.Tomorrow? It's back to a book we know was written by Joanne Murray, aka Robert Galbraith, Lethal White, the fourth Cormoran Strike novel. Nick promises to lay out the tensions between classes and castes in this book and how the story told reflects those tensions in Rowling's own life. John is set to discuss how Ibsen's Rosmersholm, the source of this book's epigraphs, is also a story template for this turning point of the first seven books. Stay tuned! New News and Yous, all about SCRUBS' return, JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH being a hit, a weird ass BIG BANG THEORY spinoff, DEXTER: RESURRECTION, and much more...
We're really doing another "Superman" movie, huh? CNN and MSNBC don't wanna talk about McAllen ICE attack; Save New Orleans from certain doom with this one weird trick; This isn't "whataboutism," this is just additional context; For once and for all, cloud-seeding did not cause Texas floods; Why didn't UK-style punk rock catch on in the US?
It is hard to talk about this follow up without asking what happened. The first was a surprise hit that was popular among audiences of all ages. M3GAN also took the internet by storm which is always a big win. It was not long before a sequel and spinoff were announced. Everyone seemed excited about the prospect of a M3GAN universe. We talk about how the marketing failed the movie. Was the trailer too campy? Maybe, it is not like the original was super serious. It definitely gave people the wrong impression. What made the first so appealing was how it mixed camp, sass, and creepiness. The camp and sass were in the trailer, but all of the horror was removed.Which is a shame, since M3GAN 2.0 is a pretty fun watch. It is laugh out loud funny, has some great action scenes, and did a better job of developing its main characters. It did all the right things; it just was for the wrong movie. This will have many leaving the theater feeling confused. What does the future hold for the franchise? While there has been no announcement regarding a third movie, Soulm8te is still set to be released in January 2026. Is it already time to reboot the mainline franchise? Or can they salvage something from what they already have? Was M3GAN just a matter of right place, right time? Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network.

Hey! Welcome back. You may have noticed a lack of episode last week, and that is because of not one, but three freak acts of nature. It is not an exciting story, but it does emphasize that I might be cursed. Anyway, the delay meant that I could buy and check out Death Stranding 2. I didn't play DS1. I had seen enough of it at several E3s to know it wasn't gonna be my jam. But it is a Kojima game. So, I'd be a liar if I didn't say I was always tempted. Now, here comes a sequel. It looks like Kojima has gone maximalist. The writing? Max Kojima. Now with more combat. More stealth. More weirdness. And it hadn't been shown to death at several conventions. So... I decided to go for it. Now, I am several hours in and I am beginning to think my initial instincts were right. This one isn't for me. If you liked DS1, though? You're probably going to love DS2. My yapping to Matt about it inspired the topic for this episode, because it turns out: Matt isn't sold on a coming sequel that everyone is amped for. So, what sells us a sequel? Why did I get DS2, and why isn't he interested in Resident Evil 9?
The Musk vs. Trump drama is heating up...again. Elon is still dragging Trump's disastrous “Big Beautiful Bill,” while Trump is threatening to pull support for Musk's companies. In response, Musk is teasing support for Trump's political rivals. It's petty, it's personal, and it's playing out like a bad reality show, with the American people stuck as unwilling extras. Who will come out on top? And more importantly, what does this chaos mean for the rest of us? Tune in as we break down the latest twists in this billionaire beef. Don is out today, but we're in great hands. Angie “Pumps” Sullivan of the I've Had It Podcast is stepping in to break it all down with her signature wit and no-nonsense take. Don't miss it.
