Nicolas Cage gives us Ben, unraveling with grace and fire, while Elisabeth Shue's Sera offers a love that doesn't try to fix—just to see. Together, they create something devastatingly honest: a portrait of two broken souls who find fleeting solace in each other's ruin. Did you enjoy the episode? If Ferris Bueller takes us on a tour of the fun and glamorous side of Chicago, Chris Parker and company show us it's dark underbelly, while still maintaining the comedy and silliness that 80's teen flicks are known for. Whether you are wondering if you should spike your Tab with Drano, nurture your crush on Thor, or if maybe you could sell Daryl, just remember: “Nobody leaves this place without singin' the blues!”Today's root beer is Anchor with Ginger.Intro and Outro music by Stockmusic331 on Pond5Send us a text

Feeling old yet, Slackers? When we were young, there were so many movie stars—and not just the Brat Pack. Sean Penn, Kiefer Sutherland, and Elisabeth Shue come to mind. Fast forward to today, and these former young heartthrobs and beloved teen idols have become Hollywood royalty, winning some of the industry's most prestigious awards, including Golden Globes, Academy Awards, Emmys, and Tonys. Movies like TAPS and Fast Times at Ridgemont High boast numerous award winners, including multiple Oscar wins. While Sean Penn received recognition fairly early in his career, actors like Christian Slater and Jennifer Jason Leigh didn't receive any significant award buzz until 30+ years into their careers. Though I'm an avowed Ferris Bueller hater, it was still pretty cool to see Alan Ruck (Cameron) receive nominations for his role on Succession.Although I don't typically pay much attention to award shows, I'm rooting for Demi Moore to finally win the big one for her role in The Substance. We dive into how these stars have evolved—not just in their careers, but in their artistry—transforming from iconic teen roles into multi-award-winning performances. We explore their journeys from being the faces of an era to becoming respected actors and performers across different genres. It's fascinating to see these once-young stars redefine what it means to age gracefully in Hollywood while staying relevant, admired, and celebrated.
This week the society continues their exploration of the realms of Touchstonia by watching 1988's Cocktail, directed by Roger Donaldson and starring the one and only Tom Cruise, Doug Coughlin, and society favorite Elisabeth Shue. Ever want to make it filthy rich? Try bartending! But beware, it's not all TGI Friday's - there's a seedy underbelly of intrigue, high dares, Tom Cruise freakouts, and a lot of Coughlin's laws!Follow us @medfieldfilm on social media for the latest news.
In the late 1980s, few movies encapsulated the aspirational vibe of the era quite like Cocktail. Released in 1988, this romantic drama, directed by Roger Donaldson and starring a magnetic Tom Cruise, is a cocktail of ambition, love, and the search for identity. For this week's episode of Born to Watch, we're deep-diving into this cult classic. In this Cocktail (1988) Movie Review, we'll explore the film's signature style, performances, and its lasting impact on pop culture. The Story of Brian FlanaganCocktail follows Brian Flanagan (Tom Cruise), a charming and ambitious young man fresh out of the military who dreams of making it big in the corporate world. After facing rejection from high-powered job opportunities in New York City, Brian turns to bartending as a temporary gig, only to discover a talent for mixing drinks and working a crowd. Under the tutelage of seasoned bartender Doug Coughlin (played by Bryan Brown), Brian learns the art of flair bartending—transforming cocktail-making into a theatrical performance. But as Brian rises through the ranks of nightlife stardom, his ambitions clash with reality, leading to heartbreak, betrayal, and, ultimately, self-discovery. From the high-energy Manhattan bar scene to the tranquil beaches of Jamaica, the movie's settings are as diverse as its themes.Tom Cruise: A Star Shining BrightBy 1988, Tom Cruise was already a household name, thanks to hits like Top Gun and Risky Business. In Cocktail, Cruise once again exudes the charm and energy that made him a box-office darling. His portrayal of Brian Flanagan is a perfect mix of confidence, vulnerability, and ambition, capturing the complexities of a man torn between his lofty dreams and the harsh realities of life.Cruise's ability to sell even the most over-the-top scenes—like flipping bottles mid-air to a raucous crowd—speaks to his charisma and star power. It's no surprise that the role cemented him as one of Hollywood's most bankable leading men.The Mentor and the LessonsBryan Brown delivers a standout performance as Doug Coughlin, Brian's cynical mentor. Doug's “Coughlin's Laws”—a mix of humorous and hard-earned wisdom—serve as Brian's guiding (and sometimes misleading) principles. The dynamic between Cruise and Brown is electric, capturing the highs and lows of their mentor-protégé relationship. Doug's character adds depth to the story, offering a sobering contrast to Brian's youthful exuberance.Romance in ParadiseThe film takes a romantic turn when Brian leaves the city for Jamaica, where he meets Jordan Mooney (played by Elisabeth Shue). Their chemistry is palpable, and Jordan's grounded nature counterbalances Brian's high-flying ambitions. Shue's performance brings warmth and sincerity to the film, anchoring the story in moments of genuine emotion amidst the glitz and drama. The romance between Brian and Jordan is central to the film's emotional arc. It's a tale of love tested by ambition, betrayal, and the quest for redemption—classic ingredients for a memorable romantic drama. The Flair and Theatrics of BartendingOne of Cocktail's most iconic elements is its portrayal of flair bartending. The film transformed the act of making cocktails into a spectacle, with Brian and Doug dazzling crowds by flipping bottles, juggling shakers, and turning bartending into an art form. These high-energy sequences, set to a soundtrack of 80s hits, are among the most memorable in the movie.Songs like “Kokomo” by The Beach Boys and “Addicted to Love” by Robert Palmer add to the film's vibrant atmosphere, making the nightlife scenes come alive with infectious energy. The combination of music, choreography, and Cruise's showmanship turned bartending into an aspirational profession for a generation.Themes of Ambition and IdentityAt its core, Cocktail is a story about ambition—both its allure and its pitfalls. Brian's journey reflects the challenges of chasing big dreams while staying true to oneself. The film explores themes of friendship, betrayal, and the search for meaning in a world driven by material success.Doug's cynicism and Brian's youthful optimism create a compelling tension, forcing Brian to confront his own values and priorities. As the story unfolds, the film raises questions about the cost of ambition and the importance of staying grounded.Cultural Impact and ReceptionCocktail was a box-office success upon its release, earning over $170 million worldwide. However, its reception among critics was mixed, with some dismissing it as shallow and formulaic. Despite this, the film has since gained a cult following thanks to its energetic style, charismatic performances, and memorable soundtrack.Cocktail captured the spirit of the late 80s—a time of excess, ambition, and dreams of making it big. Its influence extended beyond the screen, inspiring a wave of interest in flair bartending and nightlife culture.Flaws and LegacyWhile Cocktail shines in many areas, it's not without its flaws. The screenplay occasionally leans on clichés, and some of the character arcs feel underdeveloped. Critics at the time noted the film's uneven tone, which shifts between lighthearted romance and heavier themes of betrayal and loss. That said, the film's imperfections don't overshadow its strengths. Cocktail remains a time capsule of 80s culture, blending style, romance, and drama into an entertaining package. Its enduring popularity speaks to its ability to resonate with audiences despite its shortcomings. Why It Still MattersDecades after its release, Cocktail continues to captivate audiences with its unique blend of charm and drama. It's a film that invites viewers to reflect on their own ambitions and relationships while enjoying the spectacle of Cruise at his most charismatic. For fans of Tom Cruise or romantic dramas with a twist, Cocktail offers a nostalgic trip back to an era of big dreams, bigger hair, and unforgettable flair. Its themes of ambition, love, and self-discovery are as relevant today as they were in 1988, making it a timeless addition to any movie lover's collection.Final PourCocktail is a cinematic concoction that mixes high-energy performances, memorable music, and a heartfelt story into a crowd-pleasing package. Whether you're drawn to Tom Cruise's star power, the dazzling bartending sequences, or the emotional journey of its characters, this film has something for everyone. For our Born to Watch listeners, we'll be diving deeper into the legacy and behind-the-scenes stories of this 80s gem in this week's episode. So grab your favourite drink, hit play, and join us as we toast to Cocktail—a movie that's equal parts style and substance. Cheers! Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcasthttps://www.borntowatch.com.au/

It's a 4K-packed week with classics of the genuine and cult variety with Peter Sobczynski catching you up on the week's physical media releases. There are titles from the emerging queer cinema of the ‘90s as well as, arguably, the best of the Todd Solondz oeuvre. There will be little argument about the best of British comedies and Peter makes one for what he considers may be the finest final film of any directorial career. Sidney Lumet does Agatha Christie justice and John Carpenter remakes a sci-fi classic. There is Woody Allen, Bob Hope and Elisabeth Shue facing off against a chimpanzee. Finally, Brian DePalma gets an upgrade on one of his most underappreciated, albeit controversial, films. 0:00 - Intro 1:08 – Criterion (Happiness 4K, Gregg Araki Teen Apocalypse Trilogy 4K) 27:08 – Mediabook (Go Fish 4K) 33:42 – Paramount (Stardust 4K) 38:44 – Kino (My Favorite Spy, The Ladykillers 4K, Murder on the Orient Express 4K, Link 4K) 1:11:16 - Warner Archive (Journey Into Fear, Conflict, A Prairie Home Companion) 1:29:51 – Shout Factory (Village of the Damned 4K) 1:37:25 – MGM (A Midsummer's Night Sex Comedy, September) 1:52:04 – Sony (Body Double 4K) 2:12:43 – New TV & Theatrical Blu-ray Releases 2:19:33 – New Blu-ray Announcements 2:22:09 - Outro

MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Oct 6th Publish Date: Oct 5th Commercial: Henssler :15 From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast Today is Friday, October 6th and happy 60th birthday to actress Elisabeth Shue. ***Back to the Future – I'm in the future*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia. Planning Commission holds Chastain Road mixed-use development until next month Harrison High teacher arrested on charges of sexual assault, soliciting sex from student Powder Springs municipal complex contract approved as construction continues All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Planning Commission holds Chastain Road mixed-use development until next month The Cobb Planning Commission has delayed a major development proposal that would bring warehouses, townhomes, age-restricted apartments, and retail space to a 57-acre site near I-575. The Chastain Meadows project by Strategic Real Estate Partners was put on hold for 30 days, with the commission wanting more time to evaluate traffic concerns and other details, as well as consider expert input on tree preservation. The proposal includes 365,000 square feet of warehouse space and 25 acres rezoned for residential use, but some residents and associations expressed concerns about the intensity of the development and potential clear-cutting of forested land. The case will be revisited at a later meeting........…….Get more stories like this from mdjonline.com STORY 2: Harrison High teacher arrested on charges of sexual assault, soliciting sex from student A Harrison High School teacher and coach is accused of soliciting a sex act from a 16-year-old student, authorities said. Eric Taylor Butler, 28, who is listed as a social studies teacher on the school's website and as an assistant baseball coach on the Harrison High team's website, allegedly took steps toward a sexual relationship with the student, his arrest warrant states. Butler is accused of developing the relationship with the student over the phone, through text and phone calls, from June 2023 until this week, police said. Butler was arrested late Tuesday morning and booked into the Cobb Adult Detention Center, jail records show. Butler is charged with sexual assault by a teacher, principal, assistant principal or other administrator and solicitation of sodomy. He is being held in the Cobb jail on just over $55,000 bond. STORY 3: Powder Springs municipal complex contract approved as construction continues The Powder Springs City Council has unanimously approved an amended phase-one construction contract with The Macallan Group to build a multipurpose center and a 120-space parking deck. The Marietta-based company previously renovated the historic Bodiford House into the Seven Springs Museum in 2015 and recently completed interior renovations of Acworth's City Hall. The new community space will cost $13.1 million, up from $12 million, due to increased building size and citizen-focused areas like an atrium and community room. The parking deck, not included in the project's bonds, will serve downtown visitors and Thurman Springs Park. Supply chain issues and inflation also raised costs. The complex will consolidate most city operations under one roof, while downtown property is being developed by Novare Group. Funding comes from bonds, capital funds, American Rescue Plan Act funding, and Special Purpose Local Optional Sales Tax revenues....................…..(pause) We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: ESOG – ELON – JRM STORY 4: Police: Teen drove 100 mph in 45-mph zone in crash that killed 15-year-old A Douglasville teenager, Garrett Tyler Betts, has been arrested and booked into the Cobb County jail for his alleged involvement in a car crash that resulted in the death of his 15-year-old passenger. According to an arrest warrant, Betts was driving a 2001 Ford Mustang at 100 mph in a 45-mph zone on the East-West Connector near Creekside Villas Way on August 26. He allegedly failed to maintain his lane, causing the car to leave the road, collide with a tree, and eject the passenger who was declared dead at the scene. Betts faces charges of first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, speeding, and failure to maintain lane. He is being held without bond. STORY 5: Local independent filmmakers launch campaign to bring project to life Cobb-based filmmakers, Matt Kohler and Richie Watkins of Red Fist Productions, are working on "Demons Within," a live-action series that combines dark fantasy and martial arts. The story revolves around a cursed warrior trying to suppress his inner evil to save a town from a demonic cult. They launched a Kickstarter campaign to gather financial support for the project, which features unique universes, masked villains, and stylized fight scenes. The funds will help with casting and securing filming locations. Kohler and Watkins have been developing the project for four years and are excited to see it come to life with the support of backers. We'll be back in a moment Break: DAYCO – DRAKE – POWERS STORY 6: Chattahoochee Tech Aviation Training Academy launching three programs of study for 2024 spring semester Chattahoochee Technical College is launching three aviation programs at its Aviation Training Academy in Paulding County for the 2024 spring semester. The programs include Aircraft Structural Technology diploma, Technical Certificates of Credit in Avionics Bench Technician, and Aircraft Upholstery and Trim. These programs aim to train students for careers related to aircraft structure manufacture, avionics repair, and aircraft upholstery. The Aviation Training Academy, scheduled for completion by December 2023, will provide the necessary facilities for these programs and help prepare students for high-demand careers in aviation maintenance and repair. STORY 7: Kennesaw State looking for a few breaks to go its way Kennesaw State's football coach, Brian Bohannon, acknowledges his team's challenges and the need for improvement as they face Tennessee State for their homecoming game. The Owls have struggled with a 1-4 record, facing issues such as missed field goals, dropped interceptions, and bad snaps during games. Bohannon emphasizes the importance of making their own opportunities and addressing their shortcomings. In addition to the football game, the homecoming event will feature interactions with the men's and women's basketball teams, including photo opportunities with the men's team's ASUN Conference championship trophy. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ and available on the KSU Owls app with a 3 p.m. kickoff. Back with final thoughts after this.
