Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay head to the clock tower to catch lightning in a bottle as they discuss the 1985 classic, 'Back to the Future.' Andy kicks off the podcast by telling a story when he overdid with partying at a fair and wound up at a crazy car dealership that specializes in Deloreans. Then the guys give this family movie the Degen treatment. There's a lot of discussion about how Robert Zemeckis captured the '80s wonderment, and was helped by Alan Silvestri's occasionally gripping score. In addition to the technical aspect, the hosts devote a lot of time to whether or not Lea Thompson was a smokeshow back in the day, and the icky logistics of going back in time just to have the opportunity to hook up with the teenage version of your own mother. Michael J. Fox was famously the second choice to star in the franchise, but it's Christopher Lloyd's cartoonish depiction of Doc Brown that sells the essence of a film with a mostly bonkers premise. So order a Pepsi Free or a Tab from the milkshake counter and settle in for a surprisingly unhinged episode.
Welcome to PTBN Pop's Movie Review of The Day! Every weekday we will be reviewing a movie whether it be currently in theaters, featured on streaming or just a film that we hold near and dear to us. United States v. Christopher Lloyd
It's hard to think anyone could argue against the cast of this DENNIS THE MENACE adaptation. It's not just Matthau, Thompson, and Christopher Lloyd doing solid work, but also Mason Gamble as Dennis, holding his own against them. And it's directed by Nick Castle, the original Michael Myers? We can all agree it's an artifact of interest at least. But is it a good movie too, or does it only work if you let nostalgia for the 90s (and perhaps your own childhood) overwhelm you?TIMELINE00:01:26 Only been around for five years00:02:27 Real Talk00:49:59 The Future & Patreon Stuff- Interested in more Contrarians goodness? José provided a detailed summary of the plot, describing the main character Gavin as an amoral hustler who discovers a golem-like creature in Reynolds' apartment. The discussion explored themes of aging, retirement, and superficiality, with Ryan suggesting the story represents how younger people replace older professionals in various fields. The group analyzed key moments in the story, including Gavin's discovery of the statue in Reynolds' bathtub and the creature's apparent attraction to Gavin's appearance. The conversation concluded with reflections on Gavin's character as a young, attractive but lost soul. Gavin's Shadow Statue Confrontation The group discussed a story involving Gavin, who becomes entangled with a pimp named Pretorius after a misunderstanding about a crime committed against one of Pretorius's sex workers. Gavin tries to escape but is caught and attacked with a knife, leading to a confrontation with a shadowy statue that appears to be coming to his aid. The statue, which seems connected to Gavin on a psychic level, transforms from a wooden statue to a more human form and helps defend him, eventually revealing a connection to Gavin's own shadow self. The discussion touched on various themes including doppelgängers, golems, and depression, with the statue potentially representing Gavin's inner demons or depression manifesting physically. Doppelganger Story Plot Discussion The group discussed a story involving a doppelganger that takes over a person's life, with José explaining key plot points about how the doppelganger physically mirrors the original person's injuries and experiences. They explored the character's situation after murdering Pretorius and the gang, including his decision not to return home due to police involvement and his limited resources. The discussion also covered the character's visit to Reynolds, who provided limited explanations about the creature's origins and requirements for activation, though Reynolds himself had become isolated and deteriorated since encountering the entity. Gavin's Doppelganger Character Analysis The group discussed a character named Gavin who creates a doppelganger that leads an independent life after copying him. They analyzed how Gavin loses his will to live as his clone becomes more human and powerful, with José comparing this to depression and Ryan drawing parallels to retirement. The discussion concluded with details about Gavin waking up to find his clone had been shot, highlighting the tragic consequences of losing one's purpose and identity. Graphic Novel Character Analysis The group discussed a graphic novel, focusing on a character who takes on others' lives and experiences. They explored themes of identity, grief, and the burden of life, particularly through the story of Gavin and his doppelganger. José highlighted the significance of the doppelganger's wound and its healing process, while the group discussed the character's potential curse and origins. They also noted the contrast between Gavin's emotional state and the doppelganger's ability to emote and connect with life. Clive Barker's Doppelganger Story Discussion The group discussed Clive Barker's story about a doppelganger, exploring its themes of grief, identity, and what makes someone human. They considered the story's potential as an arthouse film, noting its low-budget production possibilities and discussing how to adapt the interior monologue elements for the screen. The conversation included insights about Barker's own experiences that may have influenced the story, and they examined the connection between the doppelganger and Gavin's character, speculating about how the story might end. Clive Barker Rights Discussion The group discussed Clive Barker's rights to his works, particularly regarding the Books of Blood series and Hellraiser. They noted that rights typically revert to authors unless new adaptations are created, and discussed how rights complications can arise when multiple adaptations attempt to use the same material. The conversation concluded with plans to move on to Volume 4 of the Books of Blood, specifically discussing the story "The Body Politic" and mentioning a Christopher Lloyd adaptation titled "The Inhuman Condition." Hellraiser Adaptations and Projects The group discussed various Hellraiser adaptations and related projects. They talked about a 2016 screenplay for "In the Flesh" by Mick Garris and Clive Barker, and expressed hope for an upcoming TV show by Brad Fuller. The conversation also covered a Hellraiser comic book collection by Boom Studios, which includes three volumes with a total of over 1,500 pages, though one participant had to cancel their pre-order due to the high cost of $200. The discussion concluded with a brief mention of Monstrous Press's "Kolchak Meets the Monsters" crossover collection and a potential deal for 90s Hellraiser Epic comics. Marvel Hellraiser Comics Discussion The group discussed Marvel Hellraiser comics, including their completeness and value, with José noting that buyers should be aware of what they're purchasing. They planned their next content, deciding to focus on Pinhead sketches and paintings rather than voting on a new movie, with José suggesting they could return to voting after this topic. The discussion concluded with gratitude to Patreon donors and a nostalgic conversation about vintage toys from the 1980s and 1990s, including Ewok movies, Universal Monsters playsets, and various action figures. Toys Discussion The group discussed childhood toys, including She-Ra dolls, Transformers, and Battlestar Galactica figures. José shared details about a new Masters of the Universe movie trailer featuring Jared Leto as Skeletor.

Great Scott! We finally got Brandon to see this movie! We worship at the alter or Marty McFly and Doc Brown and their quirky and at times confusing voyage to the past. We discuss how pretty Michael J. Fox was, how eccentric and talented Christopher Lloyd is and marvel at the fact that Biff never made it to prison for his crimes against Lea Thompson. Press play and take the journey with us back to 1985 and then back to 1955 where we all feel weird about the sexual tension between a boy and his mother. Don't forget your skateboard! Hát most ez is kiderül. Stöki tovább tágítja a "történelem" szó kereteit és visszaél mindenki türelmével, de elsősorban Grath és Mazur várakozásaival. Igen, ez most nem az a fajta adás, amikor valami okosat tanulhattok, hanem mehet a bődületes baromságok panoptikumába, ami egyébként szépen bővül nálunk évadról évadra.

This week, we wrap whatever the theme for this month with 1985's Clue starting Tim Curry and Christopher Lloyd. Prepare for an onslaught of musical jokes, way more rocky horror jokes than we expected, and we learn more about Cecil's TNS sock farm. Enjoy this week's riff but as always be sure to drink/smoke and riff along responsibly!
Saddle up, time travelers. Johnny Spoiler rides the DeLorean straight into the Old West for a deep-dive review of Back to the Future Part III (1990), the underrated Western finale that closes out one of the greatest trilogies in movie history. While the world is distracted by football playoffs and Super Bowl conspiracies, Johnny stays locked in on clock towers, steam-powered time trains, and the emotional payoff Hollywood doesn't make anymore. This episode covers why Back to the Future Part III has aged better than expected, how it shifts the franchise from tech-heavy chaos to character-driven closure, and why Doc Brown quietly becomes the heart of the trilogy.Inside this episode:Why Back to the Future Part III feels like a love letter to classic WesternsThe Clint Eastwood homages, Monument Valley visuals, and deep-cut cinema referencesHidden details fans still miss, including ravine name changes, atomic embroidery, and timeline payoffsBehind-the-scenes facts like the train stunt filmed in reverseJohnny Spoiler's Binge Now / Binge Later / Never verdict on the entire trilogyWhy Part III may secretly be the best Back to the Future movieFan theories about a possible legacy sequel and why a Biff Tannen story might be the real untapped goldIf you love Back to the Future, Michael J. Happy New... well, let's move on. For the first flick of 2026, the Johns are wandering into chatty 90s indie film territory with "Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead!" Will a stacked cast and witty banter give this film an edge? Or will it fall prey to Tarantino Imposter Syndrome? Listen and find out!
This week, we honour the stillness of winter and the returning promise of light as we mark the winter solstice. At this turning of the year, we reflect on the people, plants and initiatives that this new light brings into focus. We begin by stepping into the richly curious world of Christopher Lloyd, the influential gardener and visionary behind Great Dixter House and Gardens. His legacy is recalled by his former student and now Head Gardener at Great Dixter, Fergus Garrett. Nick Turrell then returns with his top 10 countdown of plants that changed human history. This time, Nick delves into one species that helped ignite a vast global industry, asking whether its influence has ultimately made our lives better or worse. Finally, a look to the future with Sara Redstone who shines a light on a pioneering initiative taken up by theRHS, focused on strengthening plant biosecurity, highlighting the vital work being done to protect our plants and ecosystems for generations to come. Today we are joined by longtime friends of the show, Caitlyn and Cullen of Caitlyn's Conspiracy Corner to talk about not one, but three movies, one of the greatest trilogies of all time, Robert Zemekis's Back to the Future 1, 2, & 3! These movies need little introduction, but for the uninitiated, the films star Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd as they travel back and forth through time to remedy the mistakes they both inadvertently cause for their own past and future selves. We discuss what the films mean to us, how they may or may not be indicative of the culture of Reagan's America, and how the third movie is either a worthy entry to the franchise or a terrible tacked on addition to an otherwise perfect duology. Your mileage may vary on it, and it doesn't seem like any of us got 88 mph out of it. Michael J. Fox delivers peak ‘80s charisma as Marty McFly, while Christopher Lloyd gives us the wild-eyed, brilliant, borderline-unhinged Doc Brown we all wish we had as a science teacher. We break down the film's most iconic moments: the skateboard chase, the Enchantment Under the Sea dance, George McFly finally throwing a punch that changed the timeline, and of course the legendary 1.21 gigawatts lightning-strike finale. We also dive into its perfect blend of comedy, sci-fi, heart, and pure cinematic magic — plus all the timeline questions that still make fans' brains melt. Support the show
[School of Movies 2025] We return to the format of the first film, trapped in a specific, focused time period, lovingly recreated for modern audiences. The big obstacles to be overcome are both based on the ticking clock point-of-no-return, and are unexpectedly and deeply personal for our protagonist. This one is Emmet's movie. While Marty still has to learn a harsh lesson about whether other people think he's chicken or not, he is on a rescue mission and this third film puts Doc Brown front and centre. This is because being saved from temporal exile and murder-by-Tannen externally pales in comparison to the urgency in which Emmett must save himself internally, philosophically, and in key regard to his until-today strained relationship with the rest of the human race beyond Marty. Christopher Lloyd brings it, in this sweetly tragic, broken-and-mended love story through time, opposite the luminous Mary Steenburgen as doomed schoolmistress Clara Clayton in the Hill Valley of 1885. This is a bittersweet goodbye that punctuates this madcap, majestic trilogy with a firm and definite full-stop, ending on the highest of notes that defies all modern conventions of the permanent strip-mining of exhausted IPs. Guest: Jesse Ferguson @TheDapperDM from the Recorded Tomorrow Podcast Those early Digital Gonzo shows can be found on the School of Movies Archive podcast feed. Strap in and charge up the Mr Fusion, because this week on Born To Watch, the boys head back, forward and sideways through time with our full Back to the Future Part 2 (1989) Review. Whitey, G Man and Will settle into the DeLorean for one of the most ambitious sequels of the 1980s, breaking down timelines, hoverboards, self-lacing Nikes and all the glorious 80s optimism jammed into Robert Zemeckis' wild ride. The episode kicks off with the crew riffing on 1989 as a powerhouse movie year, then quickly dives into how Back to the Future Part 2 faced enormous expectations. With a to be continued tease at the end of the original, fans were primed, and the pressure was real. As the boys say, sequels rarely outshine their predecessors, but every now and then you get an Empire Strikes Back or a T2. So where does this one land?Whitey shares how the film was a childhood favourite, the one he rewatched the most, and how time has shifted his appreciation back to the original. Gow reveals he saw it at the cinema on release and has clocked well over 15 viewings since, instantly transported by Alan Silvestri's iconic score. Will talks about how the franchise has simply always been there, one of those movies that defined growing up.From there, the episode fires through the good, the bad and the very strange. There's deep love for the hoverboard, the power-lace Nikes, and that brilliant rooftop confrontation where Marty lures Biff over the edge before swooping up in the DeLorean. The crew gives full credit to the groundbreaking split-screen effects, the energy of Michael J. Fox juggling multiple characters, and the perfect dual performance from Fox and Christopher Lloyd, who are operating at peak one-two punch level. They also dig into the weird bits the film never fully explains. Could Old Biff actually operate the DeLorean? Why does he get sick travelling through time when no one else ever has? Why do Jennifer and Jennifer faint from seeing each other, but Biff does not? How does Marty not realise Hill Valley 1985 has turned into a dystopian biker slum the moment he steps out of the car? From Jaws 19 to the brilliant Jaws VHS window cameo, from Indiana Jones nods to manure trucks, the boys unpack every Easter egg this film throws at you. And of course, there's a big chat about whether Biff Tannen's alternate 1985 persona is really just 80s Donald Trump in a green tracksuit. (Spoiler, yes.)The episode also dives into box office numbers, casting trivia, Elizabeth Shue stepping in as Jennifer, and some cracking tangents, including Huey Lewis, yacht rock, Stranger Things, The Little Mermaid, and even John Farnham fronting LRB.By the time the boys reach question time, they've covered everything from the butterfly effect through to whether a single rich bloke can really break the fabric of time. It's pure Born To Watch chaos, big laughs and deep nostalgia for one of the great sequels of our generation. If you love time travel, manure trucks and three blokes talking absolute cinematic nonsense, make sure you follow Born To Watch on Spotify and Apple. Dana and Tom with 5x Club Member, Sara Shea (Host and Creator of Shea Cinema), discuss the Best Picture winner of 1975, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: directed by Milos Forman, written by Lawrence Hauben and Bo Goldman, cinematography by Haskell Wexler, music by Jack Nitzschke, edited by Richard Chew, Lynzee Klingman, and Sheldon Kahn, starring Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher, Danny Devito, and Christopher Lloyd.Plot Summary: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a powerful drama directed by Miloš Forman, based on the novel by Ken Kesey. The film stars Jack Nicholson as Randle P. McMurphy, a rebellious man who fakes insanity to avoid prison and is sent to a mental institution. There, he clashes with Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher) whose strict control over the patients crushes their spirits. McMurphy's defiance inspires the other men, including the quiet and gentle Chief Bromden (Will Sampson), to rediscover their sense of freedom and individuality. The movie explores themes of authority, conformity, and the human spirit, ultimately showing the cost of resisting oppressive systems.Guest:Sara SheaHost and Creator of Shea Cinema; @sheacinema on X, IGPreviously on 12 Angry Men (1957) Revisit, Barry Lyndon (1975), Shampoo (1975), 2025 Post Oscars Reaction Show, Patton (1970)Chapters:00:00 Introduction, Cast, and Background for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest04:42 Welcome Back, Sara Shea!08:23 Mental Health - Then and Now23:57 Relationship(s) with Cuckoo's Nest32:25 Plot Summary for Cuckoo's Nest33:20 What is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest About?39:44 Did You Know?45:46 First Break46:32 What's Happening with Sara Shea?50:25 The Cinema Legacy Poll Rankings - #25-2101:05:44 Best Performance(s)01:31:09 Best Scene(s)01:38:08 Second Break01:38:48 In Memoriam01:39:13 Best/Funniest Lines01:41:04 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:50:36 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:55:14 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty02:02:57 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness02:11:51 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability02:19:23 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total02:21:02 Remaining Questions for Cuckoo's Nest02:27:16 Thank You to Sara and Remaining Thoughts02:35:35 CreditsYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or...
Send us a textGreat Scott! Some movies don't just age well, they keep gaining power like a clock tower in a storm. We unpack why Back to the Future still crackles: a script that pays off every setup, characters who change in ways you can feel, and time travel rules that invite geeky debate without derailing the fun. From the Save the Clock Tower flyer to Uncle Joey's “bars” and the Twin Pines to Lone Pine switch, we map the film's breadcrumbs and show how tight writing creates timeless rewatch value. We get obsessive about the timeline, too. Marty's trip to 1955 unfolds over a week we can actually chart, and the story's paradoxes: bootstrap loops, butterfly ripples, the photo fade, work together instead of fighting each other. We also talk texture: why the DeLorean is the perfect sci‑fi icon, how Biff's blundering menace gives the story bite, and why those Hill Valley sets feel alive in both eras. Then there's the alchemy of performance and music. Michael J. Fox plays panic as propulsion. Christopher Lloyd turns technobabble into wonder. Crispin Glover's physical comedy makes George's punch land like a symphony. And Alan Silvestri's score glues it all together, blasting heroism during the lightning strike and winking when history pivots. It's the rare blockbuster that mixes teen comedy, family drama, and sci‑fi puzzle with confidence, reminding us how bold 80s filmmaking could be without franchise safety nets.If you love film craft, time travel logic, or just want that rush of cinematic joy, you're in the right feed. Michael J. Fox is an award-winning actor, author, and philanthropist whose talent, humor, and heart have inspired generations. Four decades after Back to the Future made him a global star, Michael J. Fox sits down with Willie Geist to reflect on the film that defined a generation and the resilience that's defined his life since. He opens up about the whirlwind of becoming Marty McFly at 23, the joy of rediscovering the movie as a fan, and the impact of the Michael J. It's our fourth episode of the increasingly-inaccurately-titled Patreon Request "Month" 2025, and in the longest official episode of this podcast to date, the randomizer is going all the way back to 1988 to pick ArthurCrane's request for, quite simply, one of the greatest cinematic triumphs of all time, a tour-de-force of animation, live action and pre-CGI special effects wizardry, wrapped up in a still-relevant metaphorical fable about civil rights and gentrification set in an impossible fantasy world that combines a gritty film noir aesthetic with off-the-wall cartoon zaniness. Directed by future Oscar-winning blockbuster visionary Robert Zemeckis at the peak of his powers, with animation directed by often-underappreciated genius Richard Williams, and representing a Disney studio with new management eager to swing for the fences and conquer the world, this masterpiece was truly a once-in-a-lifetime perfect melding of artistry, ambition and anarchy. And granted, the whole project was blown out of the water just a few years later by the even greater achievement that was Ralph Bakshi's Cool World, but this movie was still pretty darn swell too. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Gwendoline Christie, and Fred Armisen also return, enriching the series with their dynamic portrayals of the Addams family and school faculty. With a perfect blend of gothic charm, biting humor, and suspenseful storytelling, Season 2 proves that Wednesday's world is only getting darker—and more addictive.Remember to grab your Audible 30 Day Free Trial, simply click on the link in the show and follow the prompts.CheersDMRSupport the showThe audio clips used in this podcast, including excerpts from movie/series/documentary trailers, are used under the principles of fair use and fair dealing for the purpose of criticism, commentary, and review.
