Spotty the Turtle is a Merry Little Breezes story. Peter Rabbit, Reddy Fox, and Billy Mink are arguing over who is the fastest. They decide to go and ask Grandfather Frog who is can be. He suggests they have a race as that is the only way they can be sure. He says they will start together from the old butternut tree, race away across the Green Meadows to the little hill on the other side and bring back a nut from the hickory tree that grew there. Frogs and hamsters, hamsters and frog. It seems to change every time we go to the pet store. Then again, the pet store is kind of like a very small zoo. We see birds, amphibians, and other animals in their cages just waiting to get taken home. It's fun to watch these little crabs waves their claws in the air like they are waving at us! I digress. The latest obsession in the house is frogs. We went looking at the local pet store a few days ago for a frog for a new pet. We found a pacman frog. We didn't buy it but we looked at multiple sources on the internet about what it takes to care for and keep a frog as a pet. It's a beautiful sunny day, just perfect for a nap. Grandfather Frog is asleep on his big, green lily-pad when mischievous Billy Mink comes along.

“Grandfather Frog’s Common Sense.” Chapters 5-8 of THE ADVENTURES OF BUSTER BEAR by Thornton W. Burgess.  Little Joe Otter learns a lesson from Grandfather Frog.

I missed the read aloud event this year (grump technical issues), but I still wanted to honor it and I thought it would be a great episode to get back up to speed. Burgess was a naturalist who wrote a column for children about wildlife. His stories were about humanized wild animals. They wear clothes and talk, but otherwise act as the real animals do. His stories were set in the Green Meadows and the Green Forest. Since they were originally written in a column each chapter begins with a recap and ends on a cliff hanger. They are perfect early reader (around 2nd grade) books. This one is The Adventures of Grandfather Frog. 

The Adventures of Jerry Muskrat tells the story of Jerry, a young muskrat, and his adventures in escaping the Farmer and his son, and saving the Laughing Brook and his home at the Smiling Pool from drying up. The story also features Grandfather Frog, Joe Otter, Billy Mink, and Paddy the Beaver. In chapter one, The Adventures of Jerry Muskrat tells the story of Jerry, a young muskrat, and his adventures in escaping the Farmer and his son, and saving the Laughing Brook and his home at the Smiling Pool from drying up. The story also features Grandfather Frog, Joe Otter, Billy Mink, and Paddy the Beaver.

Peter is visiting some friends when he sees Spotty the Turtle and realizes that he has never seen his house. Peter asks Spotty and Spotty tells him it is on his back and he carries it with him all the time. Peter thinks this is pretty cool but realizes there must be a reason why so he heads off to find Grandfather Frog to hear the story of why. Sleep Tight!, Sheryl & Clark❤️

Peter Rabbit is back and he is confused once more. This time he cannot understand when Johnny Chuck says he is eating so that he can sleep all winter. Peter has noticed that Johnny Chuck has gotten a lot rounder in the last little while and he asks him why.
