Be Great Today: The Power of a Personal Mantra

    Shark Theory

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 17, 2026 6:15

This episode started with a question I want you to sit with: what is your mantra? My buddy Lamonte lives by three words, 'Be great today,' and I break down why those words hit differently when you understand what a mantra actually is at its root. This is not about positive thinking or wishful optimism. It is about pairing expectation with deliberate action and recognizing that you are the common denominator in every outcome in your life. If you have been waiting on the right circumstances to show up, this episode is the reminder that you are the reason things fall into place. Key Takeaways A mantra is literally a mind tool, designed to anchor you when pressure, fatigue, or adversity hit hardest. Expectation is the barometer for how you judge every experience. Set yours toward greatness and then act accordingly. Hoping and wishing are not strategies. Deliberate action toward being great today separates the doers from the waiters. You are the common denominator in every situation in your life. That is not a burden, that is power. Even in the darkest rooms, light finds a way through. There is always an opportunity if you are looking for it. Action Steps Choose your personal mantra this weekend. Make it short, direct, and something you can call on in moments of pressure or exhaustion. Each morning, pair your mantra with one specific action step toward who you want to be, not just a feeling but a decision followed by movement. The next time you face a difficult situation, actively look for the light in it before you name the problem. Train your mind to find opportunity first. Notable Quote You are the common denominator between complacent and great. That should not scare you. That should excite you.

He bet his uncle he could beat him in a race, and that was the start of everything.Handal Roban grew up in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines playing cricket before a single track meet at age fifteen changed his trajectory.  When the cricket team pushed him out, he didn't look back. Instead, he chased the guys who beat him—literally moving to Jamaica to train at Jamaica College High School, one of the most decorated prep programs in the Caribbean. That decision, he says, taught him how to navigate being the underdog, how to thrive in discomfort, and how to carry the weight of a new culture in silence when no one could understand a word he said.At Penn State, Roban has quietly built one of the most decorated careers in school history: two Big Ten Freshman of the Year awards; multiple All-American honors; a trip to the Paris Olympics at 21 years of age; and a 1:42.87 at the 2025 NACAC Championships that left him thinking the clock was broken. That time made him the second-fastest 800m runner in NCAA history. He still can't fully believe it.But what defines Roban isn't the resume, it's the philosophy underneath it. Stop chasing times. Find your mantra. Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Don't respect your competitors so much that you forget to race them. And when the butterflies show up before the gun, don't fight them, channel them. With one year of eligibility remaining and an NCAA title still on his list, Roban isn't close to done.Tap into the Handal Roban Special. If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! Zeitblende

In this talk, we take some of those ideas to their logical extreme to articulate a mantra for Mother Kālī in her pure void aspect, before whom even Śrī Arjuna trembled in fear in Chapter XI of the Bhagavad Gītā! In this talk, we see how Mā in this aspect is not scary at all but when approached in this way, is actually thrilling, exciting and empowering. This might be my most ambitious and exciting lecture yet since this idea is something I've been just chewing on and playing with for a few days and I don't think any idea has quite excited me as much as this one! Recently, we've been having some discussions around the finer, more esoteric ideas around mantra sādhanā from the very refined manuals and exegetical works of the 10th and 11th masters of classical Tantra like Maheśvarānanda & Abhinava Gupta and others. In How Mantra Works & My Favorite Śakti Mantra we explained mantra-sādhanā in a properly śaktādvaita (non-dual) context and then extended from there in Kālī Gāyatrī Mantra | & How To Use Mantras to consider how the mantra can then be applied in a more traditional ritualistic, contemplative and meditative context (which Abhinavācharya might call "ānavopaya" or what we might recognize as more exoteric, mainstream Tāntrik sādhanā). In this class, we turn to an even finer and subtler approach regarding mantra which considers the phonemic foundations to make a claim about how bījā mantras are formed. Most of this material appears in Abhinava's Chapter III of the Tantrāloka & Tantrasāra but the precedent for this is in primary sources like the Nandikeśvara Tantra and even the Maheśvara Sutras from Pāninī which offer very early analysis on Sanskrit phonemes and the logic around how mantras arise and how they work. Once we do this kind of deconstruction (or rather, once we understand things at this level of resolution which arguable is the closest zoom in to mantra sādhana we've ever done together) we should be able to see how all sounds are mantras and how all words, in all languages can not just be empowered as mantras and used accordingly but also how they can be recognized to be inherent mantra whose meaning is Consciousness, i.e You.Hit Me Up xSupport the showLectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST and again at Friday 11am PST Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrM

Lucas Rizzotto is one of the most distinctive artists working at the intersection of technology and human experience. He built Where Thoughts Go, a VR piece that proved genuine connection was possible inside a headset when everyone said it wasn't. He followed it with Pillow, a mixed reality app designed around the bedroom. He then spent months letting an AI algorithm run his life — wearing Mantra smart glasses, building a surveillance and memory system on himself, and documenting it as an ongoing series on Instagram and TikTok. Now he's making a live cinematic experience called Escape the Internet, which he calls Broadway crossed with a video game crossed with standup comedy. It premiered as a ghost debut at SXSW this year.Mike Boland, analyst and founder of AR Insider, sits in for Rony Abovitz in this episode. The conversation opens on the Rec Room shutdown — $250 million raised, a $3.5 billion valuation, and now a wind-down. The panel connects the collapse to a pattern: VR has always been an exotic pursuit sold as a mainstream one, and the unit economics of concurrent immersive social spaces are nearly impossible. The discussion moves to OpenAI shutting down Sora, the AI video generation race between Google VO3 and Kling, the rise of AI slop in social feeds, and Lucas confirming he quit LinkedIn because it's unreadable.AI XR News: Rec Room is shutting down after raising $250M at a $3.5B peak valuation. Snapchat is acquiring its remaining assets. OpenAI closed down Sora, overwhelmed by competition from Google VO3 and Kling. AI-only social feeds from Meta and Grok are not gaining traction — users are tuning them out.Key Moments:[05:37] – Ted's thesis: VR is an exotic pursuit that was never going to be mainstream, and Rec Room would have been healthier if it accepted that early[07:33] – Lucas: Ready Player One was the worst thing to happen to XR — it gave executives a fictional roadmap to fund[18:38] – Ted asks whether Apple can do for mixed reality what it did for the smartphone — and the panel is skeptical[27:42] – Mike on physics as the hard ceiling: Moore's Law doesn't apply to waveguides and optics the way it applies to chips[29:02] – Lucas explains why he dropped display glasses for his wearable AI experiment — they increase engineering complexity by 50x[32:17] – Lucas's AI-controlled life series: a complex algorithm watches him, mines personal data, and tells him what to do to find happiness — including an unplanned trip to Lithuania[34:12] – Ted asks if the experiment is a net positive or negative. Lucas: neutral if you're in control, net negative if Meta or OpenAI are running the system[37:52] – Lucas on convenience as a death by a thousand cuts: he optimized his life in Berlin to have everything within three minutes and became miserable[41:00] – Charlie on Where Thoughts Go: assigned it to students every semester; it only works if you surrender to it[47:15] – Escape the Internet: hundreds of people in a movie theater, all on their phones, playing a shared cinematic narrative. Lucas calls it a modern version of church[53:40] – The standup model applied to software: Lucas tested Escape the Internet at SXSW and cut 50% of the material that didn't get a reactionThis conversation sits at the intersection that the AI XR Podcast lives for: technology as creative material, not just commercial tool. Lucas's view that we've been building things people use all the time when we should be building things that blow their minds for two hours and then get out of the way is one of the sharper critiques of the attention economy you'll hear this year. This episode is brought to you by Zappar and Mattercraft — the leading visual development environment for building immersive 3D web experiences on mobile, headsets, and desktop. UnBecoming Part 5: How to Fail (May 20, 2026)Your whole life, you've felt this urgency. Not like you were running out of time, but that you only had a certain amount of time to figure it out. To remember what you couldn't seem to remember. What always felt just out of reach. What others seemed to didn't care about or even know of. They were busy living life and having friends. You didn't have many growing up (you don't have any now).Your mom said you rarely smiled, and all you wanted to do was be alone with your books. You began reading esoteric and mystical literature by the age of seven. You were doing practices to get out of your body, to find out what was beyond your body, by age ten. Staring into mirrors, at that reflection, looking back down at that body, knowing it wasn't you.
