Send us a textA wall of water 40 feet high. Spotty cell service. A holiday weekend. These factors converged to create one of the deadliest flooding disasters in Texas history this July 4th weekend, claiming over 100 lives along the Guadalupe River, many of them young campers at Christian summer camps with century-old traditions. We take you inside the communications response, examining how communications flowed during this complex, multi-agency effort in a race to save lives and reunite families. From press conferences that sometimes seemed choreographed for political visibility to the notable absence of a dedicated Public Information Officer coordinating the response messaging, we analyze what worked and what didn't in this complex emergency communications scenario. The state-level response showed impressive command of facts and empathetic delivery, while local briefings sometimes struggled with cohesion and clarity. For families who sent their children to summer camps along the river, this disaster represents an unthinkable tragedy. Our hearts go out to those affected, including the emergency responders now facing the psychological impact of recovery operations. We discuss resources for addressing PTSD in crisis responders and point listeners to our previous episodes covering mental health aspects of disaster recovery. Our guest today is Destin Singleton, principal at Emic Communications in New Braunfels, Texas. Reach out to Destin at www.emiccomms.com We'd love to hear from you. Email the show at Tom@leadinginacrisis.com.

The Red Sox lineup leaves much to be desired right now. No one is going. Very spotty at best. Why is Duran struggling so much? Cora is back on the hot seat. What is he supposed to do without Devers? He is in hot water right now though with Henry because of the Devers situation. This whole thing is tough to read. He couldn't solve the problems in the clubhouse. Keefe thinks that Breslow will stay but Cora will go in the offseason. None of the prospects are producing at the big league level. They are definitely second guessing everything. Going through the strikeout numbers. The veterans are letting the team down. Bradfo is MADFO today. Nothing is clicking for the Red Sox right now, including messaging. This timing is horrendous. There is nothing to defend. There is no offense on this team. You are now reliant on the young players who have had nothing in their careers to be the backbone of this team. They are putting too much pressure on Roman Anthony right now. There are no other options to go to. There is no answer as to why Duran is not good right now. It is time to ride this out. There is a chance that this season is salvaged. Bregman situation discussion. What happened to Kutter Crawford? Michael Kopech discussion. Keefe is the WAG expert. Kutter Crawford suffered a wrist injury off the field. What was it? Weird sports injuries discussion. If Crawford does not answer how It happened, we have to assume it was a Sloppy Thurston.

The adverts are not chosen by us, but played automatically depending on the platform you listen through (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc) and the country you live in. The adverts may even be different if you listen to the story twice.  We have had a handful of instances where an advert has played that is not suitable for a family audience, despite the podcast clearly being labelled for children. If you're concerned about an advert you hear, please contact the platform you are listening to directly. Spotify, in particular, has proven problematic in the past, for both inappropriate adverts and the volume at which the adverts play. If you find this happening, please let Spotify know via their Facebook customer care page.  As creators, we want your child's experience to be a pleasurable one. Running adverts is necessary to allow us to operate, but please do consider the premium subscription service as an alternative – it's advert free.

Spotty Coverage – Filling trust gaps in measles vaccination

One World, One Health

Send us a textMeasles is an extremely infectious virus that can both kill and cripple children. Luckily, there are highly effective vaccines to prevent the disease. The World Health Organization recommends that 95 percent of the population be fully vaccinated against measles because it's so contagious. This helps to ensure that vulnerable children and infants who cannot be vaccinated are protected.Yet vaccination rates are falling globally. The result? A 20 percent increase in measles cases between 2022 and 2023,  according to WHO and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That adds up to more than 10 million cases. More than 107,000 people died from measles in 2023, mostly children. The problem is worse in some communities, especially where connections to the outside world are limited. One example: the Charedi community in London. Often referred to as ultra-Orthodox Jews, the Charedi often run their own schools and daycare centers and can fall outside the usual public health health system. Vaccination rates have fallen below 70 percent in some of these communities, according to UK health officials. It can be tricky to encourage people in isolated communities to get themselves and their children vaccinated. Sometimes it's simply a matter of logistics, and sometimes it's a matter of overcoming distrust, misinformation, and disinformation.Dr. Ben Kasstan-Dabush has been studying this problem while at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. One solution he found: Make use of people from within the community to communicate. “I worked with clinical and community partners to produce a short clinic clip that can be screened in primary care waiting rooms,” he says. “It features the voice of a Charedi Jewish healthcare professional and mum.” Another success: coloring pages for kids that feature vaccination in a positive light and that use common Jewish names. Common-sense solutions include extending clinic hours so parents can attend outside working hours and religious holidays. Now a lecturer of global health policy at the University of Edinburgh, Dr. Kasstan-Dabush is continuing to study how people respond to public health outreach attempts around vaccination. Listen as he chats with One World, One Health about some of the reasons kids might not get vaccinated on time and ways to make it easier.
