The Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip rolls south out of the Delaware mud and doesn't stop until the asphalt runs out at the edge of the wet. This stop is Florida, and the thing waiting in the saw grass is the Skunk Ape, the South's swamp-bound cousin to Bigfoot, seven feet of reddish-brown hair that most witnesses say they smell long before they see.Rotten eggs, wet dog, sulfur, a stink that hangs in the yard for an hour after the thing is gone. We get into the encounters fast and we get into a lot of them, because that's what you came for.A night fisherman who kills his lantern and still sees two eyes burning high over the reeds. A family watching something cross the road that stands taller than a six-foot-five inch man. Hunters who could taste the smell before anything stepped out of the palmetto. A scream out of the Big Cypress dark that froze a campsite, and the thing that came to a four-year-old's bedroom window and held her gaze through the glass. Along the way we work the documented record the way you work an open case, weighing a Vietnam vet and former cop named Charles Stoeckman who slept a month with a shotgun, a tour guide and thirty passengers who watched one rock back and forth for fifteen minutes, a fire chief and a real estate agent who saw the same creature minutes apart on the same road, and the 1977 wave that got loud enough that a Florida lawmaker actually tried to make it a crime to harm one.We dig into the famous Myakka photographs, the two flash shots an anonymous grandmother mailed to the Sarasota sheriff asking if anyone was missing an orangutan, and why a quarter century later nobody's closed the case in either direction. We spend real time with Dave Shealy and his Skunk Ape Research Headquarters out on the Tamiami Trail, the man who's given fifty years and the most argued-over footage in the field to proving the thing is real. Then we do the honest part, the bears and the panthers and the genuinely-real wild monkey colonies breeding in Florida's woods, the skeptics inside the research community who put the credible-sighting rate at maybe five out of a hundred and fifty, and the one detail none of the easy answers explains: the smell.Roll the windows up for this one. Trust me. Have you experienced a Bigfoot sighting, Sasquatch encounter, Dogman experience, UFO sighting, or any unexplained cryptid or paranormal event deep in the woods? We want to hear your story.Email your encounter to brian@paranormalworldproductions.com for a chance to be featured on a future episode of Backwoods Bigfoot Stories.Backwoods Bigfoot Stories is a paranormal storytelling podcast featuring real Bigfoot encounters, Sasquatch sightings, Dogman reports, cryptid experiences, and true scary stories from the backwoods.Follow the show and turn on automatic downloads so you never miss a chilling encounter from the forest. In this episode, Brian welcomes Todd, an Ohio native now living in Florida, to share how a series of unsettling experiences at Bird Rookery Swamp in October 2020 pulled him into the world of Bigfoot and Skunk Ape research. What began with the discovery of a large, deep footprint pressed into fresh cypress needles quickly turned into something harder to dismiss.Todd describes repeated encounters with a powerful skunky, almost death-like odor, brush and small trees moving toward the trail, and the unmistakable sound of loud, bipedal splashing as something unseen retreated through the swamp. As his curiosity grew, Todd began documenting what he found and connecting with others who had reported similar odors, sightings, and strange activity in the same area. He later formed the Explorers Network as a way to share swamp conditions, field notes, and ongoing observations. His search has since taken him to the Florida Trail, Loop Road, and other remote areas, where he has found additional large footprints, unusual tree structures, and what appeared to be a stick-triggered trap.Todd also discusses his experimental use of sound in the field, including an artificial “howl and groan” Bigfoot call that he says consistently causes alligators to react and retreat. His current work includes long-term, fixed-location trail camera research at Myakka River State Park, where he is tracking wildlife patterns over the course of a full year. Along the way, he has noted a sharp decline in visible wildlife, unexplained roaring sounds, booming footfalls, and the use of nearby geocache logs to help gauge human and animal activity in the area.Email BrianGet Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.Have you had a Bigfoot encounter, Sasquatch sighting, Dogman experience, or other cryptid or paranormal encounter? In Episode 182 of Facts vs Feelings, Ryan Detrick, Chief Market Strategist at Carson Group, and Sonu Varghese, Chief Macro Strategist at Carson Group, dig into a market environment defined by soaring oil prices, sticky inflation, and geopolitical tension and ask the big question: Who's the real skunk at the party?Inspired by Jamie Dimon's 49-page annual report, the conversation centers on inflation as the underappreciated threat to an otherwise resilient economy. Ryan and Sonu break down what WTI crude at $115 a barrel is signaling, why real yields matter more than nominal ones, and how equity markets have held up remarkably well given the backdrop of war, energy shocks, and a hawkish Fed pivot. The episode covers the March jobs report, a surprisingly solid 178,000 jobs added, and what slowing immigration means for the labor market's break-even rate. Sonu explains the shift to a low hire, low fire economy, why youth unemployment has improved sharply since September, and why manufacturing is showing early signs of life.Ryan and Sonu also discuss portfolio construction in a volatile inflation world: why the traditional 60/40 may not cut it, why small cap value is quietly outperforming, and how managed futures and real assets are earning their place in diversified models. They close with a preview of next week's special guest, oil analyst Rory Johnston of Commodity Context, and a cautious but glass-half-full outlook for the second half of the year.Key Takeaways:- Inflation, not just the war, may be the biggest long-term market risk.- Real yields falling last week was a key positive signal for equities.- The labor market break-even rate has dropped to near zero due to stalled immigration.- Youth unemployment (ages 20 to 24) has fallen sharply since September, a constructive sign.- Diversification across geographies, sectors, and asset classes is more important than ever.- Midterm years are historically volatile, but one year off the lows, markets have always been higher.Jump to:0:00 - Opening And Fast Moving Headlines 2:05 - Oil Spikes And Market Signal Check 8:25 - Real Yields, Valuations, And Midterm History 14:25 - Jamie Dimon On Inflation Risk 18:10 - Building Portfolios For Volatile Inflation 23:00 - Fed Cuts Debate And Growth Indicators 30:00 - Spring Break Stories And Travel Chaos 34:40 - Jobs Report: What Matters Most 42:23 - Layoffs Data And Youth Unemployment Reality Check 49:50 - War Timeline, Commodities Crunch, And CPI Ahead 53:10 - Next Week's Guest: Rory JohnstonConnect with Ryan:• LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryandetrick/• X: https://x.com/RyanDetrickConnect with Sonu:• LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sonu-varghese-phd/• X: https://x.com/sonusvarghese?lang=enQuestions about the show? Female skunks usually only have one litter each year, but male skunks can reproduce with more than one female during the breeding season, according to the University of Michigan. Skunks have a gestation period of 63 days. The young are born in April or May and the average litter contains about six young with litters ranging from two to ten. Young skunks remain in the nest from six to seven weeks before they start accompanying their parents. Check your property for potential den sites. Baby skunks, known as kits, are protected by their Mother who seeks out safe, sheltered spaces to raise their young, often choosing burrows beneath porches, crawlspaces, or other structures. Den openings are usually four to six inches wide and may have a faint skunk odor. Now is a great time to inspect your property and take steps to humanely discourage skunks from settling in. Warning: a skunk can spray multiple times, reaching up to 15 feet! If your dog has sprayed, the recommendation is to: Wash out their eyes and mouth with clean water Bath them with a skunk shampoo. Commercial products are available but you can make your own with 3 parts 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1 part baking soda, and a teaspoon of dish soap. Wash them a second time with your normal pet shampoo Check them for bites as skunks can transmit rabies Monitor for illness for the next couple of days and consult with your veterinarian if there is any abnormal behavior Reference: https://wayne.osu.edu/news/skunk-mating-season-could-be-tricky-pets Experts Warn of a Big “Bug Boom” Across the U.S. This Summer A surge in insects could be on the way across the United States this spring and summer, according to experts—and it may be noticeable just about everywhere. Entomologists with the National Pest Management Association say unusual winter weather has created the perfect conditions for bugs to survive and multiply. As a result, Americans can expect pests to show up earlier than normal—and in larger numbers. The science behind it is fairly straightforward. A mix of mild winter temperatures, insulating snow, and early spring warmth allowed more insects to make it through the season. Now, rising heat and moisture are helping those populations grow quickly. Jim Fredericks, a senior official with the group, says this kind of extreme and inconsistent winter can have a ripple effect, boosting pest activity well into the warmer months. Experts warn that mosquitoes, ticks, flies, ants, and even cockroaches could all be more active than usual in 2026. That includes popular travel spots like beaches, parks, and other outdoor destinations. The takeaway: be prepared. Stocking up on bug spray, staying alert outdoors, and taking simple prevention steps could help reduce the impact of what's shaping up to be a very buggy season. Reference: https://parade.com/travel/united-states-destinations-swarmming-with-bugs-this-summer https://www.southernliving.com/bug-boom-spring-summer-11930064 According to the CDC regarding ticks, there has been a surge across America in recent years of Lyme Disease. How Lyme Disease Spreads Lyme disease bacteria causing human infection in the United States are spread to people by blacklegged (Deer Tick) ticks. In general, infected ticks must be attached for more than 24 hours to transmit infection; prompt tick removal can prevent transmission. Infected ticks are found most commonly in forested areas in the northeastern, north-central, and mid-Atlantic states, and in smaller areas within Pacific Coast states. Did you know that almost three thousand years ago, before there were athletic competitions at the first Olympics, there were music competitions at Delphi in Greece, with contestants singing hymns to Apollo? Or that, in the late 19th century in America, John Philip Sousa protégé Bohumir Kryl's Bohemian Band was frequently seen on the Chautauqua circuit, and featured four husky timpanists in leather aprons hammering on anvils shooting sparks across the darkened stage? These early festivals set the stage for music festivals today, which are doing quite well overall, having recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic, and surpassing the level of success before the worldwide shutdown on the whole. In this episode, we trace the origins of music festivals like the Pythian Games to modern day festivals like the Monterey International Pop Music Festival, where Jimi Hendrix famously lit his guitar on fire, and small roots music festivals like the Albino Skunk Music Festival. We welcome music artists Shelby Means, Joel Timmons, Liam Purcell, Mac Leaphart and Ian George, as well as Albino Skunk staffers Peter Eisenbrown, Kristen Grissom and Thieme Hall, who give us their insights into festival culture, their best and worst moments on stage and at festivals, as well as the first music festivals they attended. In this week's Grow Guides, we're taking a trip through cannabis history and breaking down the most iconic strains of all time. The genetics that shaped modern growing, breeding, and consumption as we know it. We talk through legendary names like Skunk #1, Northern Lights, Haze, and Afghani, before moving into modern classics such as White Widow, OG Kush, Chemdawg, and Sour Diesel. We also cover AK-47, Blueberry, Durban Poison, and Gorilla Glue #4, looking at where they came from, why they stood out, and how their influence is still felt in today's genetics. This episode isn't about hype or marketing, it's about why these strains mattered. We discuss stability, flavour lineage, flavour, effects, and how each of these cultivars helped push growing techniques and breeding forward. Whether you've grown them, smoked them, or only heard the names whispered with reverence, this episode gives proper context to the strains that built the foundations of modern cannabis culture. Sheriff Brian Patterson steps away from the badge and into the microphone full time as Sasquatch Odyssey explodes beyond anything he ever imagined. Part Five picks up with the podcast in full swing, and the witnesses are lining up from every corner of the South and beyond to finally tell the stories they have been carrying in silence for decades. It starts in the mountains of northeast Georgia with a seventy-three-year-old retired logger named Earl Hutchins, a man who kept his mouth shut for forty-five years about what stepped out of the timber near Clayton in the fall of nineteen seventy-eight. His story breaks something open. The emails start flooding in from across the region, and Patterson finds himself recording encounter after encounter from witnesses who never had anyone willing to listen. A retired schoolteacher from Ellijay describes the thing that came screaming out of the Chattahoochee National Forest and changed the way she felt about the woods forever. A fishing guide from Everglades City recounts the night a pair of glowing eyes tracked him across the water in the Ten Thousand Islands. A teenage girl in Oconee County, South Carolina watched something unfold from a rhododendron thicket while her daddy's bluetick hound shook itself half to death against her leg.The stories stretch across state lines and keep coming. Arkansas. Tennessee. Virginia. A coon hunter and his cousin tree something in the Ouachitas that no lantern light should ever have revealed. A family of four flees a Cherokee National Forest campsite at three in the morning. A state trooper on Skyline Drive watches something cross a two-lane highway in three strides and never tells a soul. Then the podcast goes national and the picture gets bigger. A Lummi Nation elder speaks of the Ts'emekwes his people have known for thousands of years. A woman in the Hocking Hills of Ohio locks eyes with something standing between the trees in broad daylight and never hikes again. From Louisiana to Alaska to Hawaii, the encounters pile up, and Patterson starts to understand that this is not a regional phenomenon. It is everywhere. When the show crosses international borders, the scope becomes staggering. A First Nations man from British Columbia reminds the world that his people gave us the word Sasquatch in the first place. A Russian researcher describes a shape moving through snow in the Pamir Mountains. An Australian prospector watches something vanish from a waterhole in the outback. Sherpas in Nepal, scientists in China, guides in the Amazon — every culture, every continent, every corner of the wild world has a name for what lives in the places humans do not go. But it is the deep encounters that change everything. A hospice nurse in rural Kentucky describes the night something appeared at her dying husband's window and hummed him into his final moment of peace. A lost hiker in the Gila Wilderness receives images in her mind that lead her back to safety. A former Army Ranger wakes paralyzed in the Big Thicket while something rifles through his thoughts like pages in a book. These are the stories that keep Patterson up at night and force him to ask whether these creatures are something far stranger and far more profound than anyone has been willing to consider. By the end of Part Five, Patterson is two years into full-time podcasting with over three hundred interviews behind him and patterns emerging from the noise. The creatures follow corridors. They move with the seasons. They choose when to be seen. And a small but undeniable percentage of encounters suggest something beyond biology, beyond what any scientific framework can currently explain. The podcast has crossed a million downloads. The community is growing. The world is slowly waking up. And somewhere out in the deep woods, something is watching back.

Key Changes: Jeff "Skunk" Baxter

Second Act Stories

This week we're sharing a series of episodes that capture one of our favorite themes on Second Act Stories: the moment when life changes key. These Key Changes episodes feature people whose lives have been shaped by music: some who left it behind for something new; others who found their way to it later than expected. Together, they're the stories we return to when we want to show how reinvention really works, not as a clean break, but as a shift in rhythm, perspective, and purpose. Whether you're a longtime listener or just discovering the show, these episodes reflect the heart of the podcast: bold pivots, unexpected harmony, and second acts that still have plenty to say. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter is a rock and roll legend. He was the founding lead guitarist in Steely Dan, and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Doobie Brothers. As a hired gun, he's played with a who's who of music royalty, including Linda Ronstadt, Donna Summer, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Dolly Parton, Carly Simon… the list goes on and on. From the time he was a child, the mechanically inclined Baxter loved taking things apart to see how they worked and putting them back together. He became an expert guitar repair technician and built custom guitars. He traded a custom white Fender Stratocaster he built in the 1960s to Jimi James, who would later re-emerge as the legendary Jimi Hendrix. In the 1980s, Skunk parlayed his more-than-casual interest in all things technical into a career as a missile defense consultant. After writing a paper that was quickly classified, he received the necessary clearances and now regularly consults with the U.S. government, the Pentagon and the Joint Chiefs on topics including counterterrorism and wargaming. Skunk just released a new solo album, his first, called Speed of Heat. Please enjoy our exciting deep dive into the second act of one of rock's greatest guitarists. ******* If you enjoy Second Act Stories, please leave us a review here. In this episode, we're heading deep into the muggy heart of Florida — into the swamps, forests, and backroads most people only see from the safety of an airboat. Out here, under the cover of night and cypress moss, something moves through the shadows. Something big. Something that hundreds of people claim to have seen over the last two centuries — but science still refuses to acknowledge. We're talking about the Florida Skunk Ape — the Sunshine State's answer to Bigfoot, and one of the most unsettling mysteries still hiding in America's wilderness. You might think Florida's too developed for anything unknown to stay hidden. But across generations, the reports haven't stopped. Law enforcement officers, hunters, families, and veterans have all described seeing the same thing: a massive, hair-covered figure with glowing red eyes and a smell so strong it made their stomachs turn. These aren't campfire tales — they're official reports, eyewitness accounts, and in some cases, physical evidence collected by people who had everything to lose and nothing to gain by speaking up.We'll explore nearly 200 years of sightings and encounters, from frontier settlers in the early 1800s who described “man-sized monkeys” raiding fishing camps, to the terrifying 1929 incident at the Perky Bat Tower, where something powerful enough to shake a thirty-foot structure drove out every bat inside. We'll look at the case of two Palm Beach County deputies in the 1970s — both seasoned outdoorsmen — who came face to face with a seven-foot creature while investigating livestock attacks. They even recovered hair samples caught on a barbed wire fence. You'll also hear about the Vietnam veteran who, in 1977, watched an eight-foot creature emerge from the mangroves behind his home and was so shaken that he cleared thirty feet of brush from around his property just to sleep at night. And then there are the photographs. In 2000, an elderly woman in Sarasota County sent two chilling images to the sheriff's office, showing what appeared to be a reddish-brown, ape-like creature crouched behind her backyard. The so-called Myakka Photos are still being analyzed and debated over two decades later. We'll talk about Dave Shealy, the man who's dedicated his life to proving the Skunk Ape exists — running his Skunk Ape Research Headquarters in the heart of the Everglades. His 2000 video footage of a creature running through the swamp is still one of the most-watched cryptid videos online. But this episode goes deeper than the sightings. We're asking why so many people — trained law enforcement officers, hunters, and locals — believe they've seen something that modern science says shouldn't exist. We'll dive into the psychology, the skepticism, the cultural roots of the legend, and even the Seminole people's stories of Esti Capcaki, the “tall hairy man” that predates European settlement by centuries.By the end of this episode, you'll feel the humid air, hear the buzz of the swamp at night, and maybe understand why so many Floridians won't step foot into certain parts of the wilderness after dark. This isn't just another campfire tale. This is a journey through real encounters, credible witnesses, and the enduring mystery of something hiding out there in the heart of Florida's wild places.Whether you're a believer, a skeptic, or somewhere in between, this episode might just make you slow down a little the next time you're driving through the backroads of the Everglades after sunset — especially if you see a pair of glowing eyes staring back at you from the tree line. This is the episode the swamp doesn't want you to hear.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.
