Growing up in the north Georgia mountains in the 1980s, I had an encounter that changed everything I thought I knew about the world. Something massive, walking on two legs, chased me out of the woods when I was twelve years old. That terrifying experience sent me down a decades-long rabbit hole, researching and collecting stories from across the American Southeast.In this episode, I share my personal encounter along with the haunting story of Mr. Brown, a Summerville carpenter who came face-to-face with an injured eight-foot-tall creature while hunting ginseng in 1986. What do the following styles of music have in common: Ragtime, New Wave, Dubstep, and Doo-wop? This group may seem quite divergent, but they all share a common characteristic: they are mostly types of music that no one plays much anymore. Then again, you could easily argue that these are simply sub-genres of larger categories like Jazz, Rock, Reggae and R&B, and live on in some form or another in the echoes of their sound within the broader contexts, such as they are, and here and there in all manner of newer sub-genres. And those broader contexts, those foundational genres, how are they holding up these days? Jazz has gone from ruling the airwaves, dance floors and record stores to being a mostly boutique, albeit diverse, corner of the American music map. Rock has long been declared dead, but soldiers on in bands both old and new. Reggae rose to international acclaim with Bob Marley but has not approached those heights following his untimely death. R&B may be the most robust of this small sample, with artists like The Weeknd and SZA amongst its current stars. Blues music has gone through sea changes of its own over the decades, and today, it is facing headwinds with younger audiences. As our guest Brooks Mason (known by his stage name Eddie 9V) puts it, younger music fans especially often think they will not like the blues because of its perceived predictability and reliance on old formulas. And while he is not wrong, he is also a prime example of how Blues music can garner new audiences with a new approach to the genre. He began recording and producing with the group and eventually joined to record their first album, C0002. Inspired by the punk rock and DIY movements of SST, BYO and Dischord Records tracks, in 1989 Happoldt created the logo and label Skunk Records and released the Ziggens' album on cassette. In 1990, Happoldt moved to Long Beach, California, where he met Sublime's Bradley Nowell at a party. Happoldt invited Sublime to make some live-to-DAT recordings. Intrigued by the Ziggens' cassette release, Nowell played a four-song demo for Happoldt, which Nowell had recorded before meeting Happoldt, and asked him to put it out on Skunk Records. Happoldt has been involved in some capacity with the Long Beach Dub Allstars, the supergroup Volcano, Lucky Boys Confusion, Unwritten Law, Slightly Stoopid, and Long Beach Shortbus.

Sal recounted a terrifying experience where a skunk's spray infiltrated his entire New Jersey home, leaving him in a state of panic at 2:30 a.m. Believing it was a fire or a gas leak, he called the police, only to have the officer calmly inform him that the culprit was a skunk, a normal occurrence for "living in the woods." Sal, who has been outspoken about his love for his new home in Jersey, felt his affection for the Garden State waver as he realized he now has to contend with snakes, bears, earthquakes, and now, the overwhelming stench of a skunk.
