Jeff "Skunk" Baxter is a rock and roll legend. He was the founding lead guitarist in Steely Dan, and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Doobie Brothers. As a hired gun, he's played with a who's who of music royalty, including Linda Ronstadt, Donna Summer, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Dolly Parton, Carly Simon… the list goes on and on. From the time he was a child, the mechanically inclined Baxter loved taking things apart to see how they worked and putting them back together. He became an expert guitar repair technician and built custom guitars. He traded a custom white Fender Stratocaster he built in the 1960s to Jimi James, who would later re-emerge as the legendary Jimi Hendrix. In the 1980s, Skunk parlayed his more-than-casual interest in all things technical into a career as a missile defense consultant. After writing a paper that was quickly classified, he received the necessary clearances and now regularly consults with the U.S. government, the Pentagon and the Joint Chiefs on topics including counterterrorism and wargaming. Skunk just released a new solo album, his first, called Speed of Heat. Think skunks are scary? Think again!

In this episode, we're heading deep into the muggy heart of Florida — into the swamps, forests, and backroads most people only see from the safety of an airboat. Out here, under the cover of night and cypress moss, something moves through the shadows. Something big. Something that hundreds of people claim to have seen over the last two centuries — but science still refuses to acknowledge.We're talking about the Florida Skunk Ape — the Sunshine State's answer to Bigfoot, and one of the most unsettling mysteries still hiding in America's wilderness.You might think Florida's too developed for anything unknown to stay hidden. But across generations, the reports haven't stopped. Law enforcement officers, hunters, families, and veterans have all described seeing the same thing: a massive, hair-covered figure with glowing red eyes and a smell so strong it made their stomachs turn.These aren't campfire tales — they're official reports, eyewitness accounts, and in some cases, physical evidence collected by people who had everything to lose and nothing to gain by speaking up.We'll explore nearly 200 years of sightings and encounters, from frontier settlers in the early 1800s who described “man-sized monkeys” raiding fishing camps, to the terrifying 1929 incident at the Perky Bat Tower, where something powerful enough to shake a thirty-foot structure drove out every bat inside. We'll look at the case of two Palm Beach County deputies in the 1970s — both seasoned outdoorsmen — who came face to face with a seven-foot creature while investigating livestock attacks. They even recovered hair samples caught on a barbed wire fence. You'll also hear about the Vietnam veteran who, in 1977, watched an eight-foot creature emerge from the mangroves behind his home and was so shaken that he cleared thirty feet of brush from around his property just to sleep at night. And then there are the photographs. In 2000, an elderly woman in Sarasota County sent two chilling images to the sheriff's office, showing what appeared to be a reddish-brown, ape-like creature crouched behind her backyard. The so-called Myakka Photos are still being analyzed and debated over two decades later.We'll talk about Dave Shealy, the man who's dedicated his life to proving the Skunk Ape exists — running his Skunk Ape Research Headquarters in the heart of the Everglades. His 2000 video footage of a creature running through the swamp is still one of the most-watched cryptid videos online. But this episode goes deeper than the sightings.We're asking why so many people — trained law enforcement officers, hunters, and locals — believe they've seen something that modern science says shouldn't exist. BEHIND THE LENS is kicking off the Halloween season today with a terrific making-a-movie-within-a-movie full of blood and hacking, madness, mayhem, and ridiculum – THE WEEDHACKER MASSACRE. And joining me to talk about this bloody (and funny) gem are writer/editor RAY SPIVEY and actor/executive producer ALLEN DANZIGER. But first, we're going Down Under with writer/director KIAH ROACHE-TURNER and his WWII film, BEAST OF WAR. Inspired by the real-life story of the HMS Armidale, which was sunk by Japanese zeroes in WWII while crossing the Timor Sea, along with some of the personal WWII experiences of Kiah's grandfather, BEAST OF WAR is the tale of a young troop of Australian soldiers who must find a way to survive the harsh seas on a quickly shrinking life raft which was nothing more than a small hunk of their ship that hadn't been obliterated. Hundreds of miles from anywhere, they must confront interpersonal conflicts, enemy attacks, and the advances of one very large, very hungry great white shark. What do the following styles of music have in common: Ragtime, New Wave, Dubstep, and Doo-wop? This group may seem quite divergent, but they all share a common characteristic: they are mostly types of music that no one plays much anymore. Then again, you could easily argue that these are simply sub-genres of larger categories like Jazz, Rock, Reggae and R&B, and live on in some form or another in the echoes of their sound within the broader contexts, such as they are, and here and there in all manner of newer sub-genres. And those broader contexts, those foundational genres, how are they holding up these days? Jazz has gone from ruling the airwaves, dance floors and record stores to being a mostly boutique, albeit diverse, corner of the American music map. Rock has long been declared dead, but soldiers on in bands both old and new. Reggae rose to international acclaim with Bob Marley but has not approached those heights following his untimely death. R&B may be the most robust of this small sample, with artists like The Weeknd and SZA amongst its current stars. Blues music has gone through sea changes of its own over the decades, and today, it is facing headwinds with younger audiences. As our guest Brooks Mason (known by his stage name Eddie 9V) puts it, younger music fans especially often think they will not like the blues because of its perceived predictability and reliance on old formulas. And while he is not wrong, he is also a prime example of how Blues music can garner new audiences with a new approach to the genre. Part of Eddie 9V's approach is to, as he put it, lead a band that is not really a Blues band anymore.
