Dat bewijst cinefiel Richard Toepoel in acht verschrikkelijke platen. In de categorie ‘onlogische relaties' is die van ‘metal' met ‘films' er absoluut een. Want hoe raakt de pathetische powermetal van Rhapsody aan de multidimensionale geluidsmuren van Hans Zimmer? En wat heeft het gruwelijke artwork van Cannibal Corpse te maken met de fijnbesnaarde beelden uit Titanic? Helemaal niets natuurlijk. Toch, stelt cinefiel en filmfestival-organisator Richard Toepoel, zijn er stiekem vele, vele raakvlakken. Zelfrelativerende ironie, ten eerste. De mismatch tussen ambitie en uitvoering, ten tweede. En ten derde, de soms verschrikkelijke muziek die daaruit volgt. Dus daarom, in deze editie van Dood & Verderf, een deep dive in de ziel van Richard Toepoel, die via een handvol weerzinwekkende platen, elk om zijn eigen redenen, wil bewijzen dat wie van bizarre films houdt, ook gepredestineerd is om metalfan te zijn - en vice versa. Fantastische nummer waarbij menig metalband jaloers zou zijn op de sfeer die ze weten op te roepen. Plus ze zijn al bijna aan het grunten voordat er gegrunt werd. is dat een kloppende zin?" Angelo Janotti & Dragon Sound - Against the Ninja (Miami Connection OST, 2020) "Qua muziek schuurt het heel dunnetjes tegen metal aan, I know, maar ik zou al een gehele podcast kunnen vullen over deze film alleen. Een groep beste vrienden, tevens studenten en Taekwondo fanaten, die daarnaast ook nog in een rock band zitten nemen het op tegen een Motorbende die tevens ook ninja's zijn. En dit omschrijft nog maar dunnetjes wat er zich allemaal afspeelt in deze fantastische film. De regisseur is tevens een van de hoofdrolspelers, heeft al zijn spaargeld + leningen +een hypotheek op zijn taekwondo school in deze film gestopt en de film was een complete flop. In 2012 (meer dan 20 jaar nadat hij uitkwam) her-ontdekt door een amerikaanse film distributeur en opnieuw uitgegeven en nu een cult succes." Fulci - Palms by the Cemetery (Tropical Sun, 2019) "Een death metalband die los gaat op italiaanse horror films. De band leent zijn naam van de italiaanse regiseeur Luci Fulci die bekend staat om zijn italiaanse zombie films. Deze track staat op een album die geheel gebaseerd is op de film Zombi (of zombi 2, waarom deel 2? Lang verhaal, leg ik ooit uit)." Christopher Lee & Rhapsody - The Magic of the Wizard's Dream (The Magic of the Wizard's Dream, 2005) "Holy shit, christopher lee had zijn eigen metal band! We weten allemaal dat Jared Leto naast acteur (en wat voor een acteur) ook nog muzikant is (en wat voor een muzikant). Maar Christopher Lee had dus ook gewoon zijn eigen symphonische power metal band. En als je die zin uitspreekt klinkt het fantastisch, maar dat valt van de muziek misschien niet helemaal te zeggen. Je kan het ook weer snel uitdraaien toch? Holy shit, hij heeft met Rhapsody ook muziek gemaakt, en deze clip is een b-film opzich. LOL" Danzig – Mother (Danzig, 1988) "Als acteurs zich voor kunnen doen als metal muzikanten, dan kunnen metal muzikanten zich ook vast wel voor gaan doen als acteurs. Sterker nog, zelfs als regisseurs. In 2019 bracht Glenn Danzig Verotika uit, een abominatie van een film. Gelukkig denkt meneer er zelf heel anders over, beetje god complex... De film heeft uiteraard een soundtrack die ik, in tegenstelling tot zijn film, niet kan labellen met “so bad, it's good”. Huilen en snel weer door." Cannibal Corpse – Hammer Smashed Face (Tomb of the Mutilated, 1992) "Om weer even bij te komen van alle ellende, zelfs in hollywood komen we nog wel eens wat metal tegen met als hoogtepunt Cannibal Corpse in de film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective." Amenra - Song to the Siren (Skunk OST, 2024) "Regisseur Koen Mortier maakte in 2007 een voor mij erg indrukwekkende verfilming van het boek Ex-Drummer. Een bijzonder combinatie van humor, absurdisme en zeer kleurrijke personages waarbij elk shot je een ongemakkelijk vies gevoel geeft. Ik was dan ook behoorlijk in mijn nopjes toen ik hoorde dat er een nieuwe film van hem zou verschijnen met de titel Skunk. Dan wordt het nog beter als Amenra de soundtrack van die film verzorgt, en als kers op de taart speelt Colin (de zanger) ook nog een rol in deze film. Een rol die hem net iets te goed past zoals het lijkt, namelijk als een enorme tokkie vader die zijn kind mishandeld / verwaarloosd en zijn vrouw uithoert. De film zelf draait om de zoon uit dit gezin die uit huis geplaatst wordt en terechtkomt in een inrichting. Het is een zeer aangrijpend verhaal over wat trauma met een kind doet. De humor en absurdisme zijn verdwenen en hebben plaatsgemaakt voor complete wanhoop. En wie dan beter om de soundtrack te vertolken dan Amenra. Daarnaast is dit nummer ook een briljante cover van Tim Buckley."

It's one of the best-documented cryptid cases in America, and it deserves the whole hour.But the Visitor is the freak case. It's the outlier.Tonight we park in the Hawkeye State for a different reason, because the thing Iowa actually reports, quietly, all over the map, for more than 100 years, isn't a winged devil. It's big and dark and covered in hair and it walks on 2 legs, and it's been hiding in the last place anybody'd think to look for it. We dig into the Lockridge Monster and the partially eaten turkeys that started it, the Skunk River Wildmen, a 13-year-old boy who watched one drink from the river with cupped hands, a turkey hunter who locked eyes with something in the morning fog, a bow hunter with 5 separate run-ins on his own land, a viral photo out of White Water Canyon, and a string of encounters from people who never told a soul, the mushroom hunters and the night fisherman and the farmer with a clump of coarse dark hair in his kitchen drawer.Then we take the long way home through the rest of Iowa's strange country, the cursed Black Angel of Oakland Cemetery, the Fort Dodge house whose builders invited the dead in on purpose, and the phantom cougars the state swears are gone and people keep right on seeing. En gång om året håller de sin viktigaste tillställning, Skunk Hunk Galan, eller Mr Skunkiverse som den officiellt heter. Den startade för sju vintrar sedan efter ett tjafs om vem som hade bäst skick på sin svans. Ingen minns riktigt hur det gick till. Pokalen är en kapsyl från en flaska mineralvatten, helt platt och putsad tills den blänker. Man tävlar i fyra grenar: rand, pose, doft och samtal.I år är Valter förhandsfavoriten. Hans rand är så rak att folk faktiskt har kollat om det är äkta. Det är det. Han föddes vacker. In this episode, Brian welcomes Todd, an Ohio native now living in Florida, to share how a series of unsettling experiences at Bird Rookery Swamp in October 2020 pulled him into the world of Bigfoot and Skunk Ape research. What began with the discovery of a large, deep footprint pressed into fresh cypress needles quickly turned into something harder to dismiss.Todd describes repeated encounters with a powerful skunky, almost death-like odor, brush and small trees moving toward the trail, and the unmistakable sound of loud, bipedal splashing as something unseen retreated through the swamp.As his curiosity grew, Todd began documenting what he found and connecting with others who had reported similar odors, sightings, and strange activity in the same area. He later formed the Explorers Network as a way to share swamp conditions, field notes, and ongoing observations. His search has since taken him to the Florida Trail, Loop Road, and other remote areas, where he has found additional large footprints, unusual tree structures, and what appeared to be a stick-triggered trap.Todd also discusses his experimental use of sound in the field, including an artificial “howl and groan” Bigfoot call that he says consistently causes alligators to react and retreat. Female skunks usually only have one litter each year, but male skunks can reproduce with more than one female during the breeding season, according to the University of Michigan. Skunks have a gestation period of 63 days. The young are born in April or May and the average litter contains about six young with litters ranging from two to ten. Young skunks remain in the nest from six to seven weeks before they start accompanying their parents. Check your property for potential den sites. Baby skunks, known as kits, are protected by their Mother who seeks out safe, sheltered spaces to raise their young, often choosing burrows beneath porches, crawlspaces, or other structures. Den openings are usually four to six inches wide and may have a faint skunk odor. Now is a great time to inspect your property and take steps to humanely discourage skunks from settling in. Warning: a skunk can spray multiple times, reaching up to 15 feet! If your dog has sprayed, the recommendation is to: Wash out their eyes and mouth with clean water Bath them with a skunk shampoo. Commercial products are available but you can make your own with 3 parts 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1 part baking soda, and a teaspoon of dish soap. Entomologists with the National Pest Management Association say unusual winter weather has created the perfect conditions for bugs to survive and multiply. As a result, Americans can expect pests to show up earlier than normal—and in larger numbers. The science behind it is fairly straightforward. A mix of mild winter temperatures, insulating snow, and early spring warmth allowed more insects to make it through the season. Now, rising heat and moisture are helping those populations grow quickly. Jim Fredericks, a senior official with the group, says this kind of extreme and inconsistent winter can have a ripple effect, boosting pest activity well into the warmer months. Experts warn that mosquitoes, ticks, flies, ants, and even cockroaches could all be more active than usual in 2026. Did you know that almost three thousand years ago, before there were athletic competitions at the first Olympics, there were music competitions at Delphi in Greece, with contestants singing hymns to Apollo? Or that, in the late 19th century in America, John Philip Sousa protégé Bohumir Kryl's Bohemian Band was frequently seen on the Chautauqua circuit, and featured four husky timpanists in leather aprons hammering on anvils shooting sparks across the darkened stage? These early festivals set the stage for music festivals today, which are doing quite well overall, having recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic, and surpassing the level of success before the worldwide shutdown on the whole. In this episode, we trace the origins of music festivals like the Pythian Games to modern day festivals like the Monterey International Pop Music Festival, where Jimi Hendrix famously lit his guitar on fire, and small roots music festivals like the Albino Skunk Music Festival.
