MMA is a really tough business to get into if you are wanted to compete with the UFC. At this stage, it nearly feels impossible. Back in 2006 when the International Fight League came along however, they developed a unique concept; team-based MMA. It was a bad idea. A really bad idea. The same was recently tried by the GFL and it's unlikely they will even hold an event with several cancellations in place already. So... let's watch this calamity fall apart.
Today's guest is our friend Jerry Milani. We connected with Jerry last summer when we were hoping to interview Olympic athletes. Jerry was working for USA Wrestling and got us an interview with USA Wrestler John Stefanowicz (Ep 14) and USA Volleyball Gold Medalist Jordan Larson (Ep 13). Jerry seems to know everyone and be involved in everything. In fact, he was our contact for scheduling Toni Breidinger (Ep 19), Sean Conley (Ep 20), and John Costacos (Ep24). What does this guy do? He connects people. Jerry is a proud Fordham University graduate and Public Relations executive. His job is to connect his clients to opportunities where they can build their positive public image. He has been in PR for more that 25 years, working for two agencies before venturing out on his own. Jerry is a guy that knows everyone because he does everything. A quick google search will show he is a staple in sports and pop culture. Jerry is a freelance writer and public relations executive. He has worked in P.R. for more than 25 years working with collegiate sports media, the International Fight League, and is the PR manager for Wizard World, which runs pop culture and celebrity conventions across North America. The best though, Jerry is the voice of the Caldwell Cougars, doing the play-by-play for Caldwell University basketball. We are grateful for Jerry, the work he does and the support he has shown us. Enjoy the interview: In this episode Jerry discusses: You don't have to know what you want to do How to build trusting relationships that last Venturing out on your own People care about a good story Connect with Jerry on social media @gbpackjerry

This week we're paying tribute to "Gumby"s favorite defunct organization, The International Fight League. The team based organization went belly-up 10 years ago, but that doesn't mean we can't still dream it's alive. Our Combat Countdown this week looks at which gyms would be at the top of the heap if the IFL was alive and well in 2018. We also chat with Mark De La Rosa, who shares why his wife is better than all other MMA wives. We aren't going to argue with him either. She wins this one. TIME STAMPS: 1:00 - Mark De La Rosa Interview: Big win with big support 10:00 - MMA News Roundup: Bellator is back with tournaments 15:00 - Combat Countdown: Top 5 Modern IFL Teams
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing the changed business climate for mixed martial arts following the ratings success of last Saturday’s EliteXC show on CBS. In light of this, we covered the news conference Thursday in New York, where it was announced that the Affliction mixed martial arts promotion and real estate mogul Donald Trump had entered into a partnership, with Trump buying an equity stake in Affliction. The inaugural Affliction show takes place Saturday, July 19, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, and will be shown in the U.S. on pay-per-view. We got a brief comment from Trump about why he chose to invest in Affliction, and spoke with Tom Atencio, vice president of Affliction, about the company's business plans, as well as their intention of creating unified MMA championships by working with the new sanctioning body, WAMMA. This Saturday night, June 7, WBC super welterweight champion Vernon Forrest (40-2, 29 KOs) will defend his title against Sergio Mora (20-0-1, 5 KOs) from "The Contender" series. This fight takes place at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., and will be shown in the U.S. on Showtime. We spoke with Vernon Forrest Thursday afternoon at a New York news conference about this fight and what to expect in it. Also this busy weekend, the 2008 World Jiu-Jitsu Championships, better known as the Mundials, take place beginning Thursday, June 5, and running through Sunday, June 8, at the Walter Pyramid on the campus of California State University Long Beach in Long Beach, California. This event is organized by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation. To preview the Mundials, we spoke with our colleague Kid Peligro, a senior editor of the ADCC News and a correspondent on our show. In a lengthy discussion, Kid offered his picks for the favorites in the weight classes in the men's and women's black belt divisions, as well as the absolutes. We also discussed the critical role of grappling in the mixed martial arts. The show is in MP3 format, so may take some time to download. In a lengthy interview, we discuss why this fight was so important and what boxing can learn from it.
