If world cinema studies have mostly displayed national cinemas and their transnational mutations, Seung-hoon Jeong's global frame highlights two conflicting ethical facets of globalization: the ‘soft-ethical' inclusion of differences in multicultural, neoliberal systems and their ‘hard-ethical' symptoms of fundamentalist exclusion and terror. Reflecting both and suggesting their alternatives, global cinema draws attention to new changes in subjectivity and community that Jeong investigates in terms of biopolitical ‘abjection' and ethical ‘agency.' In this frame, Biopolitical Ethics in Global Cinema (Oxford UP, 2023) explores a vast net of post-1990 films circulating in both the mainstream market and the festival circuit. Ultimately, the book renews critical discourses on global issues––including multiculturalism, catastrophe, sovereignty, abjection, violence, network, nihilism, and atopia––through a core cluster of political, ethical, and psychoanalytic philosophies. Seung-hoon Jeong is Assistant Professor of Cinematic Arts at California State University Long Beach. He is the author of Cinematic Interfaces: Film Theory after New Media, co-translator of the Korean edition of Jacques Derrida's Acts of Literature, and co-editor of The Global Auteur: The Politics of Authorship in 21st Century Cinema and Thomas Elsaesser's The Mind-Game Film: Distributed Agency, Time Travel, and Productive Pathology. Steve Choe is Associate Professor of Critical Studies in the School of Cinema at San Francisco State University who researches and teaches in film and media theory. He is the author of Afterlives: Allegories of Film and Mortality in Early Weimar Germany (2014), Sovereign Violence: Ethics and South Korean Cinema in the New Millennium (2016) and ReFocus: The Films of William Friedkin (2023). He is the co-editor of Beyond Imperial Aesthetics: Theories of Art and Politics in East Asia (2019) and editor of the Handbook for Violence in Film and Media (2022). Learn more about your ad choices. Chief Scott Haberle serves as the Fire Chief for the City of Huntington Beach and has a strong track record of effective citywide collaboration resulting in enhanced emergency service delivery and leadership development. His 32-year fire service career has given him a wide variety of experience.Today, Chief Haberle discusses his take on leadership throughout EMS, Fire, and how it all fits into lifeguarding. Frankly speaking this conversation can benefit anyone, in any rank, of any field, as Chief Haberle expands the subject of leadership which can be applied throughout all service based professions. What I find to be unique about Chief Haberle is that he has worked his way through the ranks as Firefighter, Fire Inspector/Fire Investigator, Paramedic, Fire Captain, Fire Battalion Chief/Fire Marshal and Deputy Fire Chief for the city of Monterey Park. He even put his time in as a pool lifeguard. Now he is ultimately responsible for the Huntington Beach Marine Safety Division as an integral part of the Fire Department. He holds an associate degree from Rio Hondo College; a bachelor's degree from California State University Long Beach; a master's degree in public administration from University of La Verne; and the Executive Fire Officer certification from the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland.Thank you for listening!

The CIA’s destructive role in world politics since the end of World War II as a secret rogue spy agency controlled by unelected intelligence officers has become so ubiquitous that it can be joked about. But behind the jokes lies a far darker reality: the agency's imperial ambitions have fueled a legacy of death and destruction in the name of expanding American power. Hugh Wilford, author and professor of history at California State University Long Beach, joins host Robert Scheer on this episode of the Scheer Intelligence podcast to delve into the specifics of CIA operations and their impact on geopolitics from its inception to the present day. Wilford’s book, “The CIA: An Imperial History,” emphasizes how the CIA is an unprecedented force in the world, advancing the goals of a global empire with a facade of spreading democracy. Although it makes for good Hollywood stories, the subversiveness of the agency alongside its brutal methods made it such an effective power that Scheer describes as capable of “destroying the right of people to make their own history.” The two mention the coup in Iran in 1953, choreographed by the CIA, and operations in Vietnam in the ‘60s and most odious examples. The CIA’s bloody worldwide campaigns would leave populations dazed and confused, all under the pretense of acting in their best interest, while the rest of the world remained similarly in the dark. Wilford explains, “It's not just that America is trying to hide its imperial role from world audiences, from people in the post-colonial world in the Global South, it's also somewhat trying to hide what it's doing from U.S. citizens.” These imperial ambitions, Wilford warns, inevitably have a way of backfiring, and the CIA’s history is proof of that. The CIA’s consistent meddling in the Middle East in the 20th century resulted, for instance, in the occupation of the Palestinian people, which has translated to the genocide today. “The growth of this massive secret state to carry out this globalist foreign policy has had baleful consequences, disastrous consequences, not just for people living overseas, but for people within the United States as well,” Wilford explains.

This episode featured a discussion between three emeritus professors in the APE space on the past, present, and future of APE. Dr. Garth Tymeson worked as a professor of APE at the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse. Dr. Dale Ulrich is a retired professor from the University of Michigan that created the Test of Gross Motor Development (TGMD) that evaluates the gross motor function of children. Finally, Dr. Barry Lavay is a leader in the APE space and worked as a professor at California State University Long Beach. They began by discussing laws and regulations that shaped the field into what it is today, such as creating a separate certification for APE teachers. Others highlighted that often it was debated whether children with disabilities should participate in physical activity, let alone receiving a APE curriculum. At that time, there was no available literature, no assessment or curriculum materials, and very little equipment, which posed both unique challenges and opportunities to adapt and be creative. The three guests also described the challenges and opportunities after becoming faculty members at various university's APE programs, such as modifying graduate program curriculum, establishing clinical experiences for students, and teaching themselves how to do research at a time when collaboration was not as encouraged as it is now. Valuable skills that these professors built during their first years as faculty included grant and scholarship writing, at which point the professors transitioned into discussing the sometimes-controversial topic of seeking federal and private foundation grants. One point that was highlighted during that conversation was that usually, those deciding on federal funding like to see collaboration across multiple sites. When discussing the biggest changes in APE over the last 30 years, the consensus was there has been an increase in the integration of students with disabilities in the general PE classroom. Appropriate integration has been aided by adding specialized personnel and continued updates and improvements made to rules and regulations. Specific concerns for the field to hopefully be addressed in the next 10 years include the percentage of general PE teachers who do not have the expertise or knowledge on how to accommodate students with disabilities in their classroom. Additionally, they would like to see an increase in visibility and understanding of APE.
