CatBusRuss has made it back to Champaign/Urbana from taking his big sister, ThePoeticCritic, up to Chicago Fan Expo 2023. There was plenty of fun to be had, but there is a lot of stress that comes with planning to have the maximum amount of enjoyment. The Fan Expo takeover of Wizard World (formerly Chicago Comic Con) has led to more blatant efforts to take every possible penny from the convention goers. And taking money from Netflix, WBDiscovery, NBCUniversal, and Disney while cracking down on what actors could and could not say was almost too much hypocrisy for our host to endure. He felt that the standard panels that were for fans by fans were lacking, and the cool vendors seemed to stay away from the event. Fortunately, Russ had autographs to track down to make up for this time, but the con is becoming less and less intimate. The time was filled and (too) many cool things were bought, but the 2024 reducing itself to three days from four may be a blessing. The CatBus had been dropping daily bonus episodes on ninetyforchill.com when it came to the first three days of the convention. This episode is a review of Fan Expo overall, followed by those three bonus podcasts.

This week accomplished artist, writer, storyteller, and Ghostbusters super fan John Yurcaba IV joins the podcast as guest co-host! Simmons asked for their card, and a week later, Paul received a call from Simmons.  John and Paul explain ,in detail, the chain of events from inception to delivery of the soda. HOW the collaboration  with Gene blossomed from a business venture to a true personal friendship. They relive  stories of traveling with KISS , befriending Paul Stanley, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer . The 2022 Fan Expo Philadelphia was a huge success! The Expo (formerly Wizard World) returned to the Pennsylvania Convention Center from April 8th to April 10th after a four-year hiatus.Saturday - Fans of Star Wars and Star Trek were not disappointed. Ashley Eckstein, Ming Na Wen, Carl Weathers, William Shatner, and the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation were among the celebrities who attended. We met renowned authors Claudia Gray and Charles Soule on the literary front.Sunday - Father and Son performed on the Creator stage, and it was an incredible experience. Many thanks to those who made it possible for us to perform live for the first time. Thank you to everyone who came out to hear us geek out for an hour about Star Wars. It was a fantastic adventure!

Today's guest is our friend Jerry Milani. We connected with Jerry last summer when we were hoping to interview Olympic athletes.  Jerry was working for USA Wrestling and got us an interview with USA Wrestler John Stefanowicz (Ep 14) and USA Volleyball Gold Medalist Jordan Larson (Ep 13).  Jerry seems to know everyone and be involved in everything. In fact, he was our contact for scheduling Toni Breidinger (Ep 19), Sean Conley (Ep 20), and John Costacos (Ep24).   What does this guy do?  He connects people.  Jerry is a proud Fordham University graduate and Public Relations executive.  His job is to connect his clients to opportunities where they can build their positive public image.  He has been in PR for more that 25 years, working for two agencies before venturing out on his own.     Jerry is a guy that knows everyone because he does everything.  A quick google search will show he is a staple in sports and pop culture.     Jerry is a freelance writer and public relations executive. Y'all I think we just had the most epic weekend of our lives - DC Fandome happened all while we were having our FIRST EVER live show and appearance at Wizard World comic con! We had an absolute at the con and recap everything that went down, along with some of our favorite cosplayers we got to meet. Carnage was one of them (perfect timing, considering we haven't been able to shut up about the latest Venom movie)!  The time has finally arrived. Dune is out tonight in theaters all across America and we can't believe we're finally going to see the movie we've been waiting for our entire lives. Go see Dune.  The news just kept coming in hot this week, as we got word of a certain One Direction member appearing in Eternals. Big spoiler alert. Can you guess who it is? Hint: He adores you. We dive right into a serious recap of everything that went down at the DC Fandome. The new Batman trailer, Aquaman, The Flash and Black Adam absolutely blew our minds. Dare we say 2022 is the year of DC comics...? I guess we'll have to die another die to find out. 

This episode focuses on two distinctly different milestones that occurred in the week this episode is posted. First, Warner Bros. has released the 20th-anniversary edition of Smallville – The Complete Series. Second, this weekend in Chicago marked the final Wizard World Comic-Con. To pay homage to both events, this episode features a live recording of a panel at Wizard World New Orleans from January 2020 with Smallville stars Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum, and John Glover. This interview took place a short time before the initial Covid-19 shutdown. The beginning of this episode addresses two recent Superman controversies. First, the reveal that Superman's son Jonathan was bisexual in the comics. The second was the change in Superman's motto from “Truth, Justice, and the American Way” to “Truth, Justice, and a Better Tomorrow.” Congratulations to both Smallville and Wizard World on incredible runs, and tremendous legacies.

On this episode of The Game of Nerds podcast, I'm sitting down with our resident zombie expert and my "work-husband," Jon Hicks, to talk about our adventures on the convention floor. Before Andy was on the floor doing conventions with me, the rule was Jon had to be going to the convention for me to go. So over the past six years, we've racked up a lot of convention time between the two of us. As SDCC@Home 2021 begins this weekend, it only seemed fitting for Jon and me to talk about our convention experiences as well as tips and tricks. Before we jump into conventions, though, Jon gives us the low down on the Pokemon card situation at Target and how he's deep into old episodes of Unsolved Mysteries. I'm convinced our parents just showed us the show to behave and not do something crazy with friends. As we begin chatting about conventions, we accidentally started with the best/worst example. Heroes and Villians, Fan Fest, or Walker Stalker Con, whatever you want to call it, is a prime example of how a convention with a great idea can turn bad quickly. It's considered the Fyre Festival of conventions. Here at The Game of Nerds, we've reported multiple times on Fan Fest Events, the legal trouble of its own James Frazier, and the outcome of the now-defunct convention. But there are plenty of great conventions to talk about, San Diego Comic-Con is the most popular out of all of it. It's over 50 years old, and Jon happens to be the only one on staff who has actually attended the convention. The Game of Nerds has applied for press passes for 8 years now only to be denied by new rules and requirements every year. We talk about Jon's venture to SDCC and how it's basically impossible to do everything. Just like all the movies and shows depict, people are lining up days in advance to camp out for a single panel at Hall H. If you are too busy camping you can't really do anything else the con has to offer. Many convention attendees will get worried if they are missing days, but Jon assures listeners that there is usually so much going on and around the convention that you don't really have to worry if you are missing tickets. Jon and I detail how some of these larger conventions work via lotteries for tickets, panels, and booths. This is when having a team or a system is extremely helpful. While Jon says getting the tickets for SDCC was the best moment of his life, it was the most stressful. He only got his tickets by sheer luck and friend's helping. Would he do it again? For him, once was enough. SDCC is for the die-hard fans and for those there to make money. Larges Conventions like SDCC are known for vendors having special convention exclusives or limited amounts. Some people strictly follow these conventions to pick up the merchandise to turn around a "flip" it for profit. If you've ever heard us say "Fuck Flippers," this is where the word comes from. It's when someone buys something to sell it for more profit. This is where I discuss my problem with SDCC and how I feel it's nothing but a money grab. While it's supposed to be a fan and media event, both these groups of people aren't being represented well. Tickets are limited for fans, and the media teams who are getting "free tickets" don't even care about the event. The pandemic was a doozy for everyone, and the conventions scene is no different. Many conventions weren't sure they were going to see the light of day again. So we are aware that conventions are trying to make their money back and that conventions are indeed a luxury. That doesn't mean that they can't be accessible to everyone. Reed Pop and Wizard World were two companies that quickly pivoted when the pandemic shut down conventions. They both started offering online panels and memberships for exclusive access to events. This system seems to be working for them as people decide whether they are ready to return to unperson events. We go on to talk about ECCC or Emerald City Comic-Con.

Unfortunately, there is no new episode of Freak of the Week. Due to the need to shelter in place during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been unable to record new episodes.
