The spotted owl has been a conservation flashpoint for more than 30 years. While habitat loss has been their historic foe, their most recent threat comes from within the owl family tree: the barred owl. Barred owls have expanded into the Pacific Northwest and are now outcompeting spotted owls for food and habitat. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has put forth a strategy that some experts say is the only way to save the spotted owl, and it could involve killing hundreds of thousands of barred owls.Ecologist and spotted owl expert Rocky Gutierrez joins Host Flora Lichtman to break down the plan, and explain how we got to this point.Guest: Dr. R.J. “Rocky” Gutierrez is an owl ecologist and professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota. He's now based in Humboldt County, California.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. Subscribe to this podcast. This episode explores Caliban's role in The Tempest and the ways his character has been shaped by and interpreted through race, class, and colonialism. We begin with a close look at “the pinch” and unpack how Shakespeare's audience would have understood its connections to resource scarcity and punishment. We then chart Caliban's performance history from the 19th century to the early 1980s, revealing how shifting portrayals reflected cultural attitudes. We end with a discussion of how the play's deep entanglement with colonial discourse has led to it being banned in some U.S. classrooms. In this emotionally layered bonus episode of Selective Ignorance, Mandii B leads a courageous conversation around the realities of sexual exploration, trauma, and the path to healing. With vulnerability at the forefront, the discussion leans into the complicated truths of consent, abortion, and sexual assault, centering personal stories as both testimony and release. [00:00] The episode opens with a raw unpacking of the emotional and physical consequences that can come with early sexual exploration, including how societal pressures and lack of proper education shape formative experiences. [19:52] The conversation shifts toward the topic of abortion, with the hosts reflecting on how personal choice is often weighed down by shame, judgment, and unspoken grief. [32:28] Childhood memories and family dynamics are revisited, illuminating how early emotional environments influence later relationships, self-worth, and personal boundaries. [35:48] The topic of abortion returns through the lens of cultural and societal expectations, calling out the stigmas that persist and the silence they impose. [37:52] The discussion deepens with an unflinching look at the impact of sexual assault and the long shadow it can cast, exploring how trauma affects intimacy, trust, and identity. [48:45] As the episode closes, the conversation comes full circle—examining how childhood wounds, both seen and unseen, often reemerge in adult relationships, and how acknowledging those wounds is the first step toward healing. At its core, this episode is a powerful reminder that healing is nonlinear, often messy, but always possible. Through open dialogue, self-reflection, and empathy, Selective Ignorance offers a safe space for reclaiming power, rewriting narratives, and finding strength in the process. “No Holes Barred: A Dual Manifesto Of Sexual Exploration And Power” w/ Tempest X!Sale Link Follow the host on Social MediaMandii B Instagram/X @fullcourtpumpsFollow the show on Social MediaInstagram @selectiveignorancepodTiktok @selective.ignoranceX/Twitter @selectiveig_podSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
