This week in the second half of the show Rabii Harnoune & V.B. Kühl join Robert via Zoom to play tracks from their recent album on Tru Thoughts, talk about the history of Gnawa music from Morocco and how this project fusing Gnawa and electronic music came about. For the first hour there is music from Jack Penate (produced by Inflo… the man behind Sault and also featuring Malcom Catto on drums). A brand new remix of Anderson .Paak’s Lockdown anthem. Smoove cleverly chops up the original breaks as used by A Tribe Called Quest together. Krewcial re-edits a classic from Chaka Khan. The Sugarloaf Gangsters with a tempo changing Brazilian influenced drum workout. Plus plenty more musical treats.
British singer-songwriter Jack Penate gets spiritual with soul and mysticism, and throws down raw emotion with pop polish. He reflects about his decade of hiatus and cites his inspirations: Turkish and Iranian psychedelic music as well as the influence of powerful classic gospel by the Chicago Pastor T. L. Barrett and his youth-focused ministry. Also, he talks about scouting the dramatic cliffs, stone quarry, and cave in Dorset as part of the video shoot for "Murder," and poetry by his grandfather, Mervyn Peake. Jack Penate plays stripped-down arrangements of songs from his latest record, in-studio. - Caryn Havlik

Welcome, Welcome, Welcome! To what? Come on now. You know what it is. You are now tuned into the ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTIETH episode of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! As custom dictates, it's another smash, and another long overdue meeting at that - please tripley welcome Hugo White of The Maccabees! (aka Pip's new/long time best mate!) Since destroying their recent farewell gig schedule, The Maccabees have been exploring all manner of individual and collaborative paths - it was an extremely heavy, emotional time but has left them with a world of creativity open to them. Hugo has made the absolute most of this, with the Maccas studio leaving an open door to him and his ideas, and here you can hear him relate to Pip (and YOU!) how his world has changed since the amiable disbanding. It's fascinating to hear he and Pip exchange notes on how long it takes to make songs, how these songs get tightened up to perfection in the touring process long after the album's release, fashioning a studio from a laptop to a fully furnished elaborate ordeal, daytime radio play and what that means exactly, the Brighton scene, how Hugo and his brother have become ambassadors of the MS Society, all underpinned by Pip's long running mantra which should be carved in stone somewhere - "it's not the gigs we get paid for, it's everything else..." - travel, inconvenience, all that... And you'll hear everything else all of that entails of course... Get involved! I'm sure Pip will dig out a childhood photo of him, Kate Nash, Hugo White, Adele and Jack Penate in playschool at some point too - right Pip? ••••• HUGO on TWITTER! - https://twitter.com/hugowhitenoise ••••• HUGO on INSTAGRAM! - https://www.instagram.com/hugowhitenoise ••••• THE MACCABEES! - www.themaccabees.co.uk/ ••••• THE MS SOCIETY - https://www.mssociety.org.uk/ •••••••••• SCROOBIUS PIP on TWITTER! - https://twitter.com/Scroobiuspipyo •••••••••• SCROOBIUS PIP on INSTAGRAM! - https://www.instagram.com/scroobiuspipyo •••••••••• SPEECH DEVELOPMENT RECORDS – https://scroobiuspip.backstreetmerch.com •••••••••• FOLLOW AND ENJOY!!! Born in Zimbabwe 25 years ago, Tinashé is a prodigious pop talent whose accessible guitar and keys driven future classics take gleeful inspiration from everyone from Arctic Monkeys and the Bloc Party to Jack Penate, Jamie T, Paul Simon and original afro-beat sounds. Filtering his own life experience into supremely addictive chart-friendly tuneage, Tinashé exacts a lightness of touch that means the results are always euphoric and life-affirming. Take the strutting guitars and elegant strings on the delirious new single also called ‘Saved', which was written after Tinashé was accosted by a particularly forthright tramp who thought he was an angel. He wrote and produced his debut album, with assistance from engineer Cenzo Townshend (Bloc Party, Late Of The Pier, Florence and the Machine). Front and centre is Tinashé's signature vocal, instantly recognisable and easily sliding from giddy and urgent, as on the yearning love song ‘If You Say So', to lived-in and careworn, especially on the end-of-his-tether ballad ‘Decency'. Tinashé has more than proved his talent as a live performer, with a host of thrillingly addictive shows, supporting the likes of Ellie Goulding, I Blame Coco, Marina & the Diamonds and Kate Nash and her new riot grrrl band The Receeders.
