THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS ALTERNATIVE R&B. Please everyone stop the madness. On this episode, the cast is dissecting this specific bucket of music that the girls tend to use to separate themselves. Muse + Steph are here to break the news on what is and what AIN'T.Using a twitter convo that broke the R&B side of the internet about "White Boyfriend Music", your fave knuckleheads use examples like Kelela, Solange, of course Tinashe, and even FKA Twigs to debunk this ethos of Alt that is truly made up.As always LIKE, COMMENT, & SUBSCRIBE. In this episode, we dive into the incredible journey of Tinashe and Tinotendo, twin brothers born conjoined in late 2004 in Zimbabwe. Their story took a remarkable turn when, through the efforts of Ve'ahavta, a Canadian Jewish humanitarian organization, The Salvation Army, Dr. Michael Silverman and Dr. Rachel Spitzer, the conjoined babies were brought to Toronto, Canada and underwent a successful five-hour surgery at SickKids Hospital, where they were separated and given the chance to live independent lives. Now, at twenty years old, Tinashe and Tinotendo sit down with us to hear about their experiences for the first time, and talk about their bond, and the challenges and triumphs that have shaped their lives since that transformative surgery. This is a conversation about resilience, hope, and the incredible power of medical innovation and human compassion. Tinashe and Tinotendo do not speak English, so Padrina Thistle, a nurse and wife of Dr. Paul Thistle, translated, beautifully.

Episode Overview: This episode features a relaxed, peer-to-peer conversation between two media entrepreneurs—African Tech Roundup co-founder and executive producer Andile Masuku, and Money & Moves founder and writer Tinashe Mukogo. They explore how Mukogo draws on his background in consulting (Deloitte), corporate venture capital (Next47), and organisational finance (Siemens), along with his CA and INSEAD MBA credentials, to deliver sophisticated yet accessible analysis of African businesses. What starts as an origin story and a look into his approach to business journalism expands into a deep dive on turning media assets into sustainable businesses. Mukogo and Masuku explore strategic considerations, revenue model challenges, and innovation opportunities in building independent media ventures that balance public interest with commercial viability. Key topics: - Leveraging corporate experience for credible financial analysis - Strategic approaches to finding and maintaining "blue ocean" market positions - The geography advantage: How distance can aid editorial independence - Business model innovation in African media markets - Building personal brands alongside institutional credibility - The role of independent media in developing investment ecosystems Notable points: 1. How geographic distance from Zimbabwe enables more objective coverage of major corporations 2. The limitations of traditional advertising models when covering potential advertisers 3. The strategic value of building long-term credibility before monetisation 4. Why individual voices often carry more trust than institutional media 5. The "billionaire model" and its implications for editorial independence Listen in for an unfiltered discussion between two media entrepreneurs on the practical challenges and strategic opportunities in building independent financial media properties in African markets.
*Full episode on Patreon* Today we travel back in time to the early 2010s and delve into the moody, mysterious soundscape of Kelela, the singer and dance music producer who soundtracked my early twenties. We explore her evolution from Muse to a handful of forward-thinking, UK-based producers to an Artist in her own right, why she stands above the scores of more famous Alt R&B artists (FKA Twigs, Solange, SZA, Tinashe, etc.), and the ways she's employed more Narrative Control in recent years by explicitly defining her audience and who she will and won't work with. We also check in on the Club — the rules of it, who it is and isn't “for," and whether or not it's meaningfully alienating... anyone in 2025. PLUS! This episode features exclusive voice notes from my husband, weirdo music nerd, and former club kid, David

If you've spent any time on the internet this summer, you may have encountered a certain refrain accompanying particularly fierce dance videos—"I've been a nasty girl. Nasty, nasty, nasty." This track, "Nasty" by the R&B singer and songwriter Tinashe, is a jam in its own right. Far from just a piece of viral content, "Nasty" is one of the songs of the summer, a chance for an burgeoning artist to reach a new level of success, and the latest in a long line pop songs from Janet Jackson to Beyoncé and Destiny's Child, taking the term "nasty" and spinning its on its head. "Nasty" is also a song that, in some ways, is ridiculously simple. And the simplicity of pop music has been in the news after a new scientific study argued that pop hits have become less complex over time. We dig into the study's methodology to see if we agree with its conclusion, or to put it another way, whether its conclusions match our freak. Songs Discussed Tinashe - Nasty, Save Room For Us, 2 On Charli XCX - I might say something stupid Janet Jackson - Nasty Destiny's Child - Nasty Girl Ariana Grande - Nasty Paul Simon - Still Crazy After all These Years More Read more from the New York Times about the study exploring pop's melodic complexity through history. Ahead of the release of Tinashe's seventh studio album, Quantum Baby, The Cut's Cat Zhang joins Pop Pantheon to discuss Tinashe's rollercoaster career. Cat and DJ Louie dig into Tinashe's upbringing in Lexington, Kentucky, her work as a child actor on Two and a Half Men and the girl group she was briefly in with fellow pop star Hayley Kiyoko, The Stunners. From there, they unpack her early mixtapes, explosion into the public consciousness with the sultry club banger “2 On,” her moody major label debut in 2014, Aquarius, and her years in label purgatory, during which she managed to release a return-to-roots mixtape, 2016's Nightride, and 2018's Joyride. Next they tackle Tinashe's reinvention back into the bedroom artist she began as and how she blazed a new trail as an independent artist with 2019's expansive and lush Songs For You and 2021's critically-lauded 333. Finally, they rank Tinashe in the Official Pop Pantheon. Read Cat's Profile of Tinashe in the CutListen Pop Pantheon's Tinashe Essentials Playlist on SpotifyBuy Tickets to Pop Pantheon Live!
