When I first saw Yeasayer, it was at an outdoor music festival in Houston—-in June. If you're from Texas, you know how horrific this is. It was 107 degrees when the Brooklyn boys took the stage. Front man Chris Keating sweated through every article of clothing he had, making the foot around him a salty splash zone. But it all made some sort of humid sense. Yeasayer, fresh off of the hallucinatory highs of their debut All Hour Cymbals had decided to dive into the pop deep end. But, as a band who traded in fever dreams, it would have to be utterly baffling. So it was and Odd Blood landed at the beginning of the decade, a beguiling, hypnotic, fiendishly dancable record that rode the undeniable bass groove of Ira Wolf Tuton and the dueling song-writing chops of Keating and Anand Wilder. It was as grand as it was unstable, pop mutated to some future form. As we count down the greatest music of the 2010s, Odd Blood and its lead single “Ambling Alp” made the list. We sat down with Wilder to discuss the record and what it means to him now. So, listen to the podcast, read our thoughts on Odd Blood and “Ambling Alp” and hear why we think they're the best of the 10s. “I think we're always interested in self-sabotage. ” — Anand Wilder

This week's guest is Noah Hecht - a Brooklyn-based drummer / instructor who proudly studied under Billy Hart at Oberlin Conservatory of Music and College. He's worked with Purr, Yeasayer, Eleanor Friedberger, Man Forever, Porches, Cassandra Jenkins and many more. If I were to state a through line for this chat, it's that Noah is obsessed with placement and its relationship with time. You'll see what I mean
Damon gets to talk to Chris about his upbringing, the build of his new home studio, touring adventures, bike riding, seafood and more! There are other segments too, including gig alerts, educational spotlights, and music news!
In the final episode of our capsule collection with the wonderful folks at Sauced Wine Bar, Anthony sits down with one of his favorite Brooklyn musicians, Anand Wilder, co-founder of Yeasayer and a gifted multi instrumentalist singer-songwriter. The two discuss the dissolution of Yeasayer, Anand's incredible first solo record I Don't Know My Words, the heyday of 2000's Brooklyn, the hard to navigate popularity of natural wine and one of Anand's favorite records, Mellow Gold by Beck. We found a perfect pairing for the asynchronous funk of Beck's major label debut in Fallen Grape Wine Company's debut The Mother, a honey-colored blend of Grenache, Riesling and Semillon from a promising new label out of the Santa Ynez Valley in Central California. Guest: Anand Wilder Album: Beck, Mellow Gold Wine: Fallen Grape Wine Co, The Mother
SPICY BONUS CONTENT FROM THIS EPISODE IS AVAILABLE ON PATREON! We hang out with Anand Wilder (formerly of the band Yeasayer) and talk browns in the rock biz(he's a pioneer), parenting, his solo career and upcoming tour, and all other kinds of Wild(er) stuff!
Today on an all-new episode of our weekly interview podcast: Steve Marion, better known by his recording name Delicate Steve. As a sideman, Steve's joined up with folks like Paul Simon, MacDeMarco, Tame Impala, The Black Keys and Yeasayer, but all along he's made his own instrumental guitar recordings. His latest album is out on Anti Records, and it's called After Hours, and it blends viby rhythms with cyber rock riffs, always placing an emphasis on emotionally compelling melodies. For this talk, we dug into his cover of Leonard Cohen's “Hallelujah," his work with previous Transmissions guest Shahzad Ismaily, his complicated artistic relationship with Kanye West, and his work on Amen Dunes' Freedom. Thanks for checking out Transmissions. If you dig the show, please consider leaving a five star rating or a review—or just forwarding your favorite episodes to a friend. This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and music producer Stuart Bogie. Bogie has toured and recorded extensively with groups such as Antibalas, Arcade Fire, TV on the Radio, and Iron and Wine, to name a few, and he performed as the featured soloist in the original Broadway production of Fela!. As a composer/arranger, he scored the Oscar nominated documentary How To Survive a Plague, which featured performances by the Kronos Quartet alongside Bogie's group Superhuman Happiness. He has appeared on recordings by renowned artists such as Craig Finn (of The Hold Steady), Cass McCombs, Sharon Van Etten, Angelique Kidjo (2 Grammy winning albums), Medeski Martin and Wood, Yeasayer, Spencer Day, Holly Miranda, Foals, Passion Pit, Mac Miller, and legendary improvised conductor Butch Morris. Bogie currently leads The Bogie Band featuring Joe Russo, a nine piece Winds and Drum group that just released their debut album entitled The Prophets In The City (Royal Potato Family) — the main focus of this episode. The Prophets in the City is a collaboration between old friends, as Bogie teams with drummer extraordinaire Joe Russo most known for helming Joe Russo's Almost Dead. Heightening Bogie's fiery arrangements and Russo's dynamic drumming, The Prophets in the City features a supporting cast of musicians whose resumes run through some of New York City's most beloved bands including Antibalas, The Dap-Kings, Budos Band, St. Vincent, and David Byrne's American Utopia. The resulting efforts on the debut album are riotous and jubilant, pushing the boundaries of instrumental music. In this episode host Michael Shields and Stuart Bogie discuss how New York City's energy and spirit directly inspired The Prophets in the City. They discuss the brilliant grouping of players on the album and what it's like for Bogie to work with the phenomenally talented Joe Russo. They discuss music that has influenced Bogie over the years, a variety of his other projects, and so much more. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Anand Wilder has released his debut solo album after the breakup of the band Yeasayer. I Don't Know My Words (written and recorded throughout lockdown) is full of great, wide-angled pop, which may look to 1970s hippie music and Indian popular cinema. In his quest to go back to songs that were “light on electronics and experimentation,” and “heavy on acoustics and vocals,” Wilder has said he was inspired by The Beatles, Cat Stevens, and Fairport Convention, (interview with NME.) On the record, I Don't Know My Words, Wilder plays all instruments, including mountain dulcimer a la Joni Mitchell, twelve-string guitars, plucked cello, bowed acoustic guitars, and tumbling, song-serving drums. For the Soundcheck Podcast, Anand Wilder and his band play some of these songs from his studio, in arrangements including mountain dulcimer and steamy EWI (electronic wind instrument.) – Caryn Havlik Set List: “Fever Seizure,” “Get More Than My Share,” “Half Brother” Watch "Fever Seizure": Watch "Get More Than My Share": Watch: "Half-Brother":
"If I have anything to give the world as a songwriter, I'm trying to explore the middle ground. That's not the most effective for songwriters because the most provocative things are clear statements of good and evil," says Anand Wilder, formerly of Yeasayer. In this podcast, you'll come for the process and stay for the impressions! Sure we take a deep dive into Wilder's songwriting process, but where else can you find impressions of John, Paul, and George (no Ringo). And Paul Simon?Impressions aside, Wilder is a fantastic interview and a great storyteller. But back to the process: it's about weed and windsprints. Listen to find out how he incorporates these elements into his songwriting process!Wilder's first solo album is called I Don't Know My Words.

Some of you may still be distraught over the 2019 disbanding of Yeasayer post-Erotic Reruns, but former core member Anand Wilder has come with a bit of good news. Anand Wilder is a multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter. After the break up of his band Yeasayer and the onset of a global pandemic, Anand felt it was time to buckle down and start and finish and his solo record, I Don't Know My Words (out 2022 on Last Gang records). Not only did he record the record himself at his home in Brooklyn, he co-wrote, acted in and co-produced a gorgeous video for the first single Delirium Passes, which is an adaptation of the James Joyce story, The Boarding House and features actor Ben Sinclair. In this episode, Joe and Anand talk about his surprise half brother, vasectomies, Anand's drum recording technique, psychedelic frog licking and why Anand loved the process of making his video. Also, Anand explains why he's taking a "weak" trio on the road rather than a "power" trio to support his new record. This week's episode is a true return to form, in which my old friend Michael Jacobs (aka The Ungoogleable Michaelangelo, aka Void Denizen) and I talk about pretty much everything — including plenty of things I honestly can't believe I spoke about so freely.Every once in a rare while I have a discussion on Future Fossils that truly exemplifies the spirit in which this show was born — the truly omnivorous amateur enthusiasm that pervaded it before I started worrying about defining these investigations for an audience. Here is just a set of sampling slices from our most heartfelt and epic yarn, in which Michael talks about taking care of his father, who suffers Alzheimer's; about getting back out of city life and onto the road in the American Southwest, communing with the landscape; about nonduality and artistry and memory and transpersonal somatics and their implications…It is an honor to meld with this guy, especially as my first not-exactly-post-pandemic, back-in-person podcast with a friend in the same room since God Knows When. Jaytram is like one of those dudes you'd meet backstage at a show at some club somewhere and be like - now, that is one cool cat. Jay's been drumming most all of his life, plus he makes dope beats. I've known Jay's live band work collaborations for Helado Negro, Yeasayer, Sinkane, along with his own solo work and killer improv styles. A North Carolina native, Jay has been living in Brooklyn for years. He's been DJing for most of that too - one of the cool, dark, loungey vibes in Bed Stuy, Fr. Greene and the like - Jay's tunes when DJing out are always really comforting, Funk-forward vibes. He is a Jazz cat with a Jazzy sensibility which comes across on this mix very well. One time we hung out Solange in Brooklyn well before she put any records out. I think this can work really well in hot, arid weather as well as grey, cloud-filled skies with particularly low pressure systems. On lockdown, this works great in headphones staring out the window or hooking up to the JBL's and playing at loud volumes like how I prefer. Yeasayer is a noun that means someone with a positive attitude. You may have heard of the word naysayer, a noun referring to a person constantly denying or opposing things. Conversely, a yeasayer may refer to an upbeat, positive person known for saying ‘yes’ to things. Its less flattering meaning is a person always agreeing with or being submissive to other people, as in: It makes sense that Dennis would hire a yeasayer like Chuck as his assistant. There is nothing he loves more than having someone cater to all his wishes.
