Rising hip hop influencer Cameron McCloud lets us in on his journey and his processPART ONE: Paul and Scott chat about a song that's getting a lot of hate online and consider how the internet has redefined how we hear music. PART TWO: Our in-depth conversation with Cameron McCloudABOUT CAMERON McCLOUD Cure for Paranoia is the Dallas-based alternative hip hop collective fronted by Cameron McCloud. Crowned "Rap Group of the Year" by the Dallas Entertainment Awards in 2025 and "Artist of the Year" in 2026, the group's name came about following McCloud's diagnosis with bipolar depression and paranoid schizophrenia. Their breakthrough came when Erykah Badu's tapped them to perform at her birthday bash, and they have since shared bills with such artists as George Clinton, Nas, Ludacris, and Leon Bridges. The group was named NPR Tiny Desk Contest finalists three times in 2023, 2024, and 2025 before winning the contest in 2026. In addition to the success of their most recent EP, Work of Art, they've gained attention online thanks to Cameron's 2025 challenge to release an original verse every day on his social media channels. Tackling everything from mental health to social injustice, his rhymes earned a substantial following. Inspired by groups such as Outkast, The Roots, and a Tribe Called Quest, Cameron McCloud and Cure for Paranoia are rapidly gaining a major national audience. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. This week's Mixtape Rewind takes us back to season 2 when Matt and Sam put together a mix centered around songs that ask questions. We kick off with The Who asking the most direct opener imaginable, then slide into Third Eye Blind heartbreak, Snoop Dogg identity, and a newer Snoop cut that feels like confidence distilled. Along the way we hit War's endlessly singable “Why Can't We Be Friends,” A Tribe Called Quest proving some songs never age, and Joe Jackson's sharp little spiral of “Is She Really Going Out With Him.” The questions get bigger and weirder from there, with Pixies capturing that drifting, upside-down feeling that somehow still fits modern life. The back half turns reflective without losing the fun. We talk about how arrangement can change meaning in “What's So Funny 'Bout Peace, Love, And Understanding,” why “What's My Age Again” lands harder the older you get, and how the Bee Gees remind everyone they're more than disco. We close with Michael Jackson's “Will You Be There,” plus a heavy dose of 90s soundtrack nostalgia and the memories that come packaged with the music. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5oIgRs82dIJ9EURkgtkweB?si=e0e1135f2a224bf0Who Are You? by The WhoHow's It Going To Be? by Third Eye BlindWho Am I? by Snoop DoggWhat U Talkin' Bout? by Snoop DoggWhy Can't We Be Friends? by WarCan I Kick It? by A Tribe Called QuestIs She Really Going Out With Him? by Joe JacksonWhere Is My Mind? by Pixies(What's So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love and Understanding? by Elvis Costello & The AttractionsWhat's My Age Again? by blink-182How Deep Is Your Love? by Bee GeesWill You Be There? by Michael JacksonGo to My.SuperAwesomeMix.com and start using our new app on any device - mobile or laptop. Fully & Completely: Redux Man Machine PoemThe last record. "Man Machine Poem" arrived in June 2016 wrapped in the worst news imaginable - and somehow it was still everything. Episode Summary: jD and Greg LeGros sit under a pear tree - bees and all - for the final entry in Fully & Completely's full Tragically Hip discography run. The album in question is "Man Machine Poem", the Hip's fourteenth and last studio record, released June 17th, 2016. Produced by Kevin Drew and Dave Hamelin, it arrived weeks after the band announced Gord Downie's glioblastoma diagnosis - though almost everything on it was written before that news broke. What jD and Greg dig into here is not just a final album. It's a listen to a band that sounds revitalized. That sounds, somehow, free. Track by track they work through all ten songs - 'Man', 'In a World Possessed by the Human Mind', 'What Blue', 'In Sarnia', 'Here, in the Dark', 'Great Soul', 'Tired as Fuck', 'Hot Mic', 'Ocean Next', and 'Machine' - unpacking the lyrical weight, the production choices, the thematic through lines, and the heartbreak of knowing this was the last one. There's also conversation about the musical landscape of 2016 - "Blackstar", "Blonde", "A Moon Shaped Pool", "We Got It from Here" - and the news, announced in the episode, that a new Gord Downie solo double album was coming. A heavy, funny, essential listen. “This is the most complete and well-written and natural sounding that they've sounded since ‘Phantom Power'. You could not ask for more.” - Greg LeGros What They Covered Track 1 - 'Man' • Psychedelic opener. Gord's vocal sounds ageless. jD hears the melody of 'Machine' hiding in the first 30 seconds - a bookend hiding in plain sight. Track 2 - 'In a World Possessed by the Human Mind' • Written about Laura Downie's illness. Greg reads it three ways simultaneously - personal, political, about the post-truth media cycle. 'Exciting over fair.' It lands every time. Track 3 - 'What Blue' • Greg cracks the code mid-episode: those eyes in the grey of everything falling apart. A marriage ending, quietly, inside a great song. Track 4 - 'In Sarnia' Fully & Completely: Redux Man Machine Poem tthpods.com 2 • Originally titled 'Insomnia'. Greg's go-to on the album. jD calls the guitar intro and vocal entry 'spectacular.' A love song to sleeplessness, or to a city, or to both. Track 5 - 'Here, in the Dark' • Seasonal affective disorder as a rock song. The last lyric - 'Me, I'm as happy as my least-happy kid' - hits like a gut punch. Both of them feel it. Track 6 - 'Great Soul' • Jammy and psychedelic and soaring. Greg reads the lyric run - 'I want to enchant you, I want you to enchant my days' - like a poem, and it sounds stunning that way. Track 7 - 'Tired as Fuck' • The campfire song that isn't. Tragic and hopeful at the same time. Greg's favourite line on the whole record: 'Tired as fuck, I want to stop so much, I almost don't want to stop.' Track 8 - 'Hot Mic' • Big, ballsy, stompy. Possible commentary on celebrity, patriotism, or Canada overhearing the wreck next door. Probably all three. Track 9 - 'Ocean Next' • Sounds recorded underwater. Feels like moving. Transition and mournfulness, wrapped in something that sounds straight off 'Day for Night'. Track 10 - 'Machine' • The album closes funky and light. The groove catches you off guard after everything that came before. 'I'm a real machine. It follows.' A stadium-sized song that most people only heard in arenas. Stadium-sized, Greg says. He's right. Also In This Episode The context of 2016: jD and Greg run through the musical landscape - David Bowie's "Blackstar", Frank Ocean's "Blonde", Beyoncé's "Lemonade", Radiohead's "A Moon Shaped Pool", A Tribe Called Quest's "We Got It from Here". A year of established artists making career-best work. The Hip fit right in. Greg's daughter was born in January 2016. He heard the news about Gord standing in a coffee shop with her in a stroller. He heard 'Tired as Fuck' that same afternoon. "A mixture of emotions" doesn't cover it. Album lore: the record was almost called "Dougie Stardust". When David Bowie passed away, they changed the title. The original cover would have stayed the same. jD notes he cannot imagine this collection of songs under that name. Gord Downie solo news: announced during the recording of this episode - a new double album, "Away Is Mine", ten songs in electric and acoustic versions. Josh Finlayson asked for the acoustic takes as a memento. Gord was recording this in July 2017 - three months before he passed. "Getting the shit done for us. Colossal output." Fully & Completely: Redux Man Machine Poem tthpods.com 3 Sports: 2016 Stanley Cup (Penguins over Sharks, Metallica sang the anthem), Grey Cup upset (Ottawa over Calgary in OT), Kyle Lowry at Momofuku, salt-and-vinegar chips, a bootleg DVD incident that nearly ended a marriage before it started.
What if the key to unlocking social emotional learning for your students has been playing in their earbuds all along? In this episode of Aspire to Lead, Joshua Stamper sits down with David Spellman, also known as the Positive Archer, an unorthodox educator who built a unique book and curriculum called Just Like Music: Social Emotional Learning Inspired by Hip Hop after years of recognizing a deep disconnect between the SEL strategies schools were using and the students they were trying to reach. David unpacks the powerful connection between the five elements of hip hop and the core competencies of social emotional learning, walking through how his curriculum uses hip hop lyrics from artists like Common, Jay Electronica, and A Tribe Called Quest to teach self-awareness, relationship skills, reading comprehension, and so much more. Each chapter of the curriculum is structured as a workshop built around a city, an artist, a lyric, and activities that bring SEL to life in a culturally responsive and deeply engaging way. The conversation also explores how school leaders and teachers can push back against the stigma of using hip hop in the classroom, why culturally responsive teaching is a foundation for student success, and how David's two powerful action steps for aspiring leaders can transform the way you show up for your school community. About David Spellmon David Spellmon is an experienced Behavioral Specialist with a demonstrated history of working in the primary/secondary education industry. He is a fellow for the National Fellowship for Black and Latino Male Educators. He is also the CEO and Founder of Positive Archer Solutions, an educational consulting firm that specializes in Culturally Responsive Social Emotional Learning, building Positive School Culture, and boosting up the Social Capital of students. Drawing on their extensive experience in education, Charle Peck and Joshua Stamper challenge outdated disciplinary practices and offer a clear, trauma-informed framework that empowers educators to interpret student behavior as a form of communication. Through three core tenets—Consider the Environment, Explore the Root Causes of Behavior, and Respond with Intentionality—this book equips leaders with actionable strategies to foster positive behavior, build stronger relationships, and cultivate a more supportive school climate. Packed with real-world case studies, evidence-based practices, and insights into the lasting effects of childhood trauma, The Language of Behavior provides school leaders with the tools to create lasting, meaningful change. It offers a roadmap to reduce behavior issues, re-engage students and staff, and establish a culture of accountability and empathy. This book is not just a reference—it's a call to lead with vision and transform how we approach discipline, ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive. The boys open up the Pop the Trunk Mailbag! From the "unintentionally funny" rise of Nu-Metal to the crossover of 90s skateboard culture. The guys also dive deep into the legendary Chung King Studios, sharing a classic (and chaotic) story about Foxy Brown "wildin" over a missing turkey burger. Plus, we pay tribute to the late, great Bob Power, the sonic architect behind A Tribe Called Quest and D'Angelo.

D'Angelo's Brown Sugar sounded like nothing else in 1995. R&B was slick, polished, and built for clubs. D'Angelo later said the "deeper consciousness" had gone out of contemporary music. Questlove later wrote that contemporary R&B had become "trite" and "soulless" ... and then there was Brown Sugar, D'Angelo's debut album. It sounded more like the '70s than the '90s. More like church than the club. On this episode of You'll Hear It, jazz pianists Adam Maness and Peter Martin go track by track through D'Angelo's debut, pulling apart the vocal stems, naming the jazz chords underneath the soul, and tracing every influence back to its root. In this episode of The Right Time, Bomani Jones and Jason England continue their discussion of Hip=Hop in the year 1996.From classic albums by A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul to the massive breakthrough of The Fugees, the conversation explores how 1996 produced some of the most important rap records ever made. But it was also the moment when hip-hop started shifting—from a culture-driven scene to a more commercial industry.Bomani and Jason break down why albums like Beats, Rhymes and Life, Stakes Is High, Hell on Earth from Mobb Deep, and Ironman from Ghostface Killah captured a turning point in the genre. They also discuss how artists like Lauryn Hill helped expand hip-hop's audience while changing the sound of rap. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

First Indy recounts the biography of John Forte and we listen to the evolution of his music, then Samantha talks about the extensive Private novel series by Kate Brian, and finally we prepare for the tearjerking world of Nicholas Sparks and next week's watch A Walk To Remember. I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha and Indy Randhawa John Edward Forté (January 30, 1975 – January 12, 2026) was an American rapper and record producer. He is best known for being a member of the musical collective Refugee Camp All-Stars, for his collaborations "We Trying to Stay Alive" (with Wyclef Jean) and "Rumble in the Jungle" (with the Fugees, A Tribe Called Quest and Busta Rhymes), and for his production work on The Score (1996), which received critical acclaim and earned Forté a Grammy Award nomination.[1] In 1998, he released his debut studio album, Poly Sci. In 2000, he was arrested and charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine and conspiracy to distribute; he was convicted and sentenced to the mandatory minimum 14 years after being found guilty. Forté received support from several notable figures, including Carly Simon, who became a close ally and helped advocate on his behalf during his legal defense. Forté's prison sentence was later commuted by President George W. Bush in 2008. Private is a series of young-adult novels by American author Kate Brian, beginning with 2006's entry of the same name. The books chronicle the rise of ambitious teenager Reed Brennan, the series' narrator, as she becomes a member of her new school's elite dorm—composed of a glamorous yet disparate group of teens known as the Billings Girls. As the series progresses, several matters surrounding mystery, morality, and romance arise.

What if the sixth album is where artists finally step into their truest selves? We kick off season six by chasing that idea across genres and decades, building a mix from Radiohead, Bruce Springsteen, Kendrick Lamar, Prince, Beyoncé, The Beatles, Jay-Z, John Mayer, The National, Michael Jackson, Foo Fighters, and A Tribe Called Quest. The pattern that emerges is hard to ignore: at album six, craft meets courage, and the results can be seismic. We start with contrasts—Radiohead's brooding There, There and the stark intimacy of Springsteen's Nebraska—spotlighting how restraint can be as bold as maximalism. Kendrick's TV Off punches at the attention economy while delivering meme-worthy flair; Prince's Purple Rain towers as a career-defining epic that still feels alive. We trace personal and cultural stakes in Beyoncé's Formation, then pivot to The Beatles' Michelle to show how Rubber Soul reshaped their sound with subtle, melodic confidence. The timeline gets playful when Jay-Z's '03 Bonnie & Clyde foreshadows what Lemonade would later complicate. We celebrate narrative craft in John Mayer's Walt Grace, sit with The National's vulnerable “45%er” admission, and marvel at Thriller's near-greatest-hits density anchored by Billie Jean. Foo Fighters' The Pretender turns sixth-album freedom into kinetic fuel, and A Tribe Called Quest's We the People closes with legacy, politics, and gratitude—proof that a final statement can still move the culture forward.https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/sam-2026-6th-album-mix/pl.u-1LX0auZaGX7V1. Interview by Spitty / spittywill We recently traveled up to New York to link with legendary rapper, producer and songwriter , Diamond D for a special Fat Beats Edition of “Off The Porch”. Currently celebrating the release of his new album The Diam Piece 3:Duo During our chat, he told us how growing up in The Bronx, he had a front row seat to the beginning of Hip-Hop. Diamond D told us how he started out with graffiti tagging, pop locking, and dj'n, all before he ever laid a song down. D shares his influences with us saying that it was the legendary DJ Jazzy Jay that inspired D to actually start producing music. Diamond shares how The Diggin In The Crates crew actually came about and how he met Big L, how he came up with Fat Joe, Grand Puba, Lord Finesse, Buckwild, OC, and Show Biz and shares a story of how he ended up being featured on the legendary A Tribe Called Quest's Low End Theory album, and how that look was the perfect set up for his debut album. He told us about one night at The Tunnel when he had a conversation with Wyclef. That conversation would turn into Diamond D producing "The Score" from The Fugees album of that same title. Diamond D shares a story of when he was in Atlanta and in the car with Pac when he shot at two off duty police officers harassing a black man on the side of the road. Speaking of Atlanta, he also talked about working with the infamous Dungeon Family for the TLC creep remix and Outkast's Southernplayalisticcadillacmusik remix. D also dropped game and gems about taking care of your paperwork and business in this music industry. Things like making sure you have the right lawyers and deals. He also gave us some insight on how producers have to clear samples. As well how producers get creative to avoid all the troubles of sample clearing. D gave us his perspective on how AI in music can be used for good or bad. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Hip hop wouldn't sound the same without jazz. From A Tribe Called Quest to PinkPantheress, jazz provides the groove behind of some of the most iconic tracks of the genre.Diallo Riddle and Luxxury of One Song join Adam and Peter to geek out on deep cuts and the genius behind hip hop's greatest jazz samples. We explore how sampling has shaped both genres, why the art of “borrowing” has always been part of the jazz tradition, and why some jazz musicians don't get paid for their contributions to hip hop.If you loved our episode with Nate Sloan and Charlie Harding from Switched On Pop, you'll love this one. In 1981, the music world was still riding the wave of disco's afterglow while carving out the sounds that would define the decade. Rock was dominant on the charts, with bands like Journey, REO Speedwagon, and Foreigner packing arenas, while new wave acts such as The Go-Go's and Duran Duran were beginning to reshape pop with synthesizers and bright, punchy hooks. MTV hadn't launched yet—that would come in August of '81—so radio play and word of mouth still ruled how fans discovered music. It was a year where the classic rock giants coexisted with the fresh sounds of new wave, setting the stage for an explosion of styles in the 80s. Fast-forward to 1991, and the landscape looked completely different. Grunge had crashed onto the scene with Nirvana's Nevermind, turning the polished glam metal of the late 80s into yesterday's news almost overnight. Hip-hop was no longer underground—it was chart-topping, with acts like Public Enemy and A Tribe Called Quest pushing boundaries while mainstream rap stars like MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice were everywhere. Meanwhile, pop was thriving with Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and Boyz II Men dominating radio. Unlike 1981, when MTV was just getting started, by 1991 music videos were the cultural centerpiece, shaping not just what people heard but what they wore and how they acted. This week, Dave and Rob will be looking at both years side by side, comparing the sounds, the trends, and the artists who defined each moment in music history. Description: Today's conversation might have you clutching your pearls and purity rings. Jen and Amy sit down with Dr. Celeste Holbrook—sexologist, educator, and author of Missionary Position: A Slightly Irreverent Guide to Sex After Purity Culture—for the candid, hilarious, and healing “sex talk” you never had but always deserved. From busting purity culture myths to unpacking women's complicated relationship with pleasure, Dr. Holbrook shares the four “inner missionaries” that shape our approach to sex, why sexual shame runs so deep, and how to reclaim intimacy as the joyful gift it was always meant to be. Highlights include: Unpacking women' s complicated relationship with pleasure Dr. Holbrook prescribes the best sexy-time soundtrack Review of the four inner missionaries (the Analyst, the Assassin, the Healer, and the Explorer) – the archetypes that define our individual approach to sex Celeste reveals a surprising fact that both golf carts and ejaculate have in common How the combination of purity culture, patriarchy and capitalism are the oppression cocktail for sex And the conversation veers off course when the trio discusses an exercise that uses Jason Mamoa to evaluate their sexual ethics Thought-provoking Quotes: “When I say sex education saved my relationship, I am not being bombastic. It really did help me find myself.” – Dr. Celeste Holbrook “We view sex through a patriarchal lens. Media tells us how to feel about sex and what is sexy. So what is sexy has been historically white, thin, able-bodied, young… And the way that we view ourselves then says, well, what if I'm not all of those things? Am I still sexy? Is my body still OK?” – Dr. Celeste Holbrook “The work for us, especially as women, is to anchor into our body to experience sensuality in order to experience sex instead of perform sex.” – Dr. Celeste Holbrook “We need to be inside the system in order to take down the system.” – Dr. Celeste Holbrook Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Jen Hatmake's Sex MeCourse: SexEd For the Rest of Us - https://shop.jenhatmaker.com/products/sex-101 Pantsuit Politics - https://www.instagram.com/pantsuitpolitics/ Missionary Position: A Slightly Irreverent Guide to Sex after Purity Culture by Dr. Celeste Holbrook - https://amzn.to/46StjOa For the Love of Men by Liz Plank – https://amzn.to/41JtRSS Say Yes to Pleasure: How to Talk About Sex and Rekindle Intimacy in Midlife with Vanessa Marin – https://jenhatmaker.com/podcasts/series-64/say-yes-to-pleasure-how-to-talk-about-sex-and-rekindle-intimacy-in-midlife-with-vanessa-marin/ A Tribe Called Quest – https://atribecalledquest.com/blogs/discography The Pleasure Club - https://www.drcelesteholbrook.com/https/thepleasureclub Guest's Links: Website - https://www.drcelesteholbrook.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/drcelesteholbrook/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/DrCelesteHolbrook/ Connect with Jen!Jen's Website - https://jenhatmaker.com/ Jen's Instagram - https://instagram.com/jenhatmakerJen's Twitter - https://twitter.com/jenHatmaker/ Jen's Facebook - https://facebook.com/jenhatmakerJen's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/JenHatmaker The For the Love Podcast is presented by Audacy.
