In this episode, Alex decides to rain on everyone's Fourth of July parade by talking about the recent Supreme Court decision in Trump v the United States. This was the case surrounding presidential immunity that Trump's legal team had pushed through district and appellate courts before it finally was heard by SCOTUS. This decision went 6-3 (with all conservative judges supporting the case), and while it strayed from granting the president absolute immunity, it blurred the lines for future presidential actions and granted the president almost absolute immunity. Alex worries that this convoluted decision doesn't directly define official and unofficial actions and will make it hard for courts to try a sitting president for illegal actions. He argues that this decision may indefinitely delay the January 6th case and could make Trump above the law. Later, Alex gives updates on the growing push for Joe Biden to step down.
The Bacon Podcast with Brian Basilico | CURE Your Sales & Marketing with Ideas That Make It SIZZLE!
Growing up in New York, Yogi Bera was one of my favorite characters. He was a good player but even more of a philosopher (well, sort of). Some of his most famous "Deep Yogi Thoughts" include: "It ain't over 'til it's over." "When you come to a fork in the road, take it." "It's like déjà vu all over again." "You can observe a lot by watching." "Baseball is 90 percent mental and the other half is physical." "You better cut the pizza in four pieces because I'm not hungry enough to eat six." "Always go to other people's funerals, otherwise they won't come to yours." Baseball is a sport. It's not quite as life-or-death as a gladiator in a Roman coliseum, but some people feel like it is (especially in the payoffs). But it's certainly not war, or is it? Speaking of war, Donald Rumsfeld had a Yogi Bera moment during a press conference in 2002. Rumsfeld was the U.S. Secretary of Defense in the period right after 9/11 when our leaders were contemplating attacking Iraq for possessing weapons of mass destruction. The direct quote was, "Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me because, as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say, we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns—the ones we don't know, we don't know." While that quote may be a bit confusing, the underlying concepts of "known unknowns" and "unknown unknowns" have been used in various fields like project management, risk assessment, and strategic planning for decades. I would like to look at it from the perspective of marketing in today's multigenerational, AI-infused digital online marketing world!

It has been observed repeatedly that the forthcoming presidential election in the United States may test American democracy to an unprecedented extent and prove pivotal in terms of the future role of the US in international affairs. In his address to the IIEA, Larry Donnelly examines several of the key topics that will soon be to the fore: the likely nominees on the Republican and Democratic sides; the potential impact of third-party candidates; the means by which a President of the United States is actually elected and criticisms thereof. He also discusses the issues that will be crucial and the states that will be decisive in November; and an early assessment as to what might flow from the outcome. About the Speaker: Larry Donnelly is a Boston born and educated attorney who has lived and worked in Ireland since 2001. He is a Lecturer and Director of Clinical Legal Education in the School of Law at the University of Galway. Active in politics and local government in his native Massachusetts, Larry is a regular media commentator on politics, current affairs and law in Ireland and the United States. He is a bi-weekly political columnist with TheJournal.ie and has been a featured analyst on RTÉ's overnight US presidential election coverage in every election since 2008.

As the US prepares for a presidential vote (Iowans caucusing in fewer than 50 days) and a temporary truce halts the Israel-Hamas conflict, long-term uncertainty seems the order of the day. Karl Rove, Wall Street Journal political columnist and the “architect” behind George W. Bush's presidential runs, joins Hoover senior fellows Niall Ferguson. H.R. McMaster, and John Cochrane to discuss the odds of a Biden-Trump rematch. Next the three fellows analyze the latest in the Middle East, including the peril of a broader regional conflict and the potential for eradicating Hamas. Finally, a “lightning round“ explores Vladimir Putin's peace overtures, Sam Altman's return to OpenAI, an ascendant Right on two continents, plus the legacy of the soon-to-be-touring Rolling Stones (Niall having no sympathy for any devil who doesn't recognize the Stones as the greatest rock band).

There have been so many conflicting views in the media lately on the management of menopause, and HRT has barely been out of the press at all in the last couple of years. As a result of the myriad uncertainties around menopause, many women are left feeling like they're having to fend for themselves, and that their concerns are not being heard by their doctors. Taking segments from The BMJ's webinar in May on known unknowns of menopause, we discuss the controversies around HRT; how we can give women balanced and realistic information about menopause and managing their symptoms; and how we can reframe the messaging around the menopausal transition in a more positive and hopeful way, in order to help empower women in navigating this normal life stage. Our guests: Martha Hickey is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Melbourne. Her clinical and research interest is around menopause. Margaret McCartney is a GP in Glasgow, and a freelance writer & journalist. Once you find out about them and take a listen or view their skill and talent, you wonder to yourself why they don't have the recognition they deserve based on the hard work to perfect their skills on the mic. Lawrence Krauss is an internationally known theoretical physicist, bestselling author, and acclaimed lecturer. He is currently President of The Origins Project Foundation, and host of The Origins Podcast. In this episode Professor Krauss discusses his 10th and most recent book: The Edge of Knowledge: Unsolved Mysteries of the Cosmos. The book challenges readers to explore the limits of what we know, and possibly what is even knowable! Can science ever explain the mysteries of time, space, matter, the origin of life, and the nature of consciousness? Lawrence addresses these challenges head on while also celebrating how far we have come in understanding the universe. Professor Krauss reminds us tha not knowing implies a universe of opportunities with the possibility of discovery and surprise. In the episode Dr. Krauss has much to say about the risks of AI, astrobiology, the pursuit of a theory of everything, and where science can take us. He reveals his motivations for writing this latest book, and his deep concerns for the current state of academic freedom. As an accomplished scientist with over 500 publications, Lawrence Krauss has focused on the interface between elementary particle physics and cosmology, including the origin and evolution of the Universe and the fundamental structure of matter. Among his numerous important scientific contributions was the proposal, in 1995, that most of the energy of the Universe resided in empty space. Krauss previously served as Director of Arizona State University's Origins Project, and Foundation Professor for a decade from 2008-2018, and also as Chair of the Board of Sponsors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists from 2006-2018. During his career Prof. Krauss has held endowed professorships and distinguished research appointments at institutions including Harvard University, Yale University, University of Chicago, Boston University, University of Zurich, University of California at Santa Barbara, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), Case Western Reserve University, Australian National University, Arizona State University, and New College of Humanities. He has written 10 popular books, including the international best-sellers, The Physics of Star Trek and A Universe from Nothing. https://originsproject.org/ https://www.lawrencemkrauss.com/ https://twitter.com/LKrauss The Edge of Knowledge: Unsolved Mysteries of the Cosmos: https://t.co/BD18qnTxtq The Cosmological Constant Paper by Dr. Krauss: https://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/9504003 Subscribe to the Jordan Harbinger Show for amazing content from Apple's best podcast of 2018! https://www.jordanharbinger.com/podcasts Please leave a rating and review: On Apple devices, click here, https://apple.co/39UaHlB On Spotify it's here: https://spoti.fi/3vpfXok On Audible it's here https://tinyurl.com/wtpvej9v Find other ways to rate here: https://briankeating.com/podcast Support the podcast on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/drbriankeating or become a Member on YouTube- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmXH_moPhfkqCk6S3b9RWuw/join To advertise with us, contact advertising@airwavemedia.com Learn more about your ad choices. Tune in to hear:- What was Drew's experience studying under Richard Thaler like?- Drew thinks that you have to hold a willingness to be right and to be wrong in equal measure at all times - is this something that Thaler modeled in his behavior and how does he think about this in the context of his own firm?- What's an analogy we can draw between Hank Aaron's batting behavior and the act of picking stocks?- What are a few techniques Drew has discovered to de-bias his thinking a bit?- Drew is great at distilling highly complex concepts into easily understandable ideas - is this an important part of getting his institutional clients on the same page?- What are "unknown knowns" and what do they have to do with confirmation bias? In this episode we start introducing you to the major characters of the Watergate scandal at its roots. We start with the guy who masterminded it all, though mastermind may not be the correct description. G. Gordon Liddy was a former FBI agent, a lawyer, and it seems fantasy espionage agent. He somehow seems to have bungled his way upwards from a job in the Treasury Department to the Nixon White House and finally on to the Nixon Campaign Staff. He originally was in charge of the efforts to plug leaks at the White House after the Pentagon Papers were released to the New York Times and Washington Post newspapers. He ran the Plumbers Unit as its on the ground operations guy. If a decision needed to be made and it fell to G. Gordon Liddy to make it, it appears Liddy constantly made the wrong one. We also reintroduce Geoff Shepard, then a policy guy in the Nixon White House he moved over from the Treasury Department just before Gordon Liddy did. He knew Liddy from his days in the Treasury Department and his warnings to his immediate supervisor Egil "Bud " Krogh got largely ignored. In a bit of my own short hand he told Krogh not to walk, but to run, as far away from G. Gordon Liddy as he could and instead Krogh hired Liddy anyway. And the rest , as we say, is a disproportionate section of every American History book in the land. In this episode we we will hear the story of how the various characters got where they were and in positions to create the biggest scandal in American History, from Liddy, to E. Howard Hunt, to all the various Cuban burglars who were also later captured in the Watergate. This is the foundation for the disaster to come. At the end, we also will hear from another player, Jeb Magruder, who was supposed to be supervising this train wreck and prevent it from having ever occurred in the first place.
Our Season 6 Premier and the first in our NIXON and WATERGATE series:This season opens just as the Vietnam War ends for America. Even as the treaty is signed there are still last minute maneuverings that President Nixon and Henry Kissinger have to deal with in order to get our Prisoners of War out of Vietnam. You will listen in on the discussions between the President and his speech writer Ray Price and then Dr. Henry Kissinger as the war finally comes to an end. Then we will listen to the memories of the brave soldiers of that war and the ordeals they suffered through as Prisoners of War in the Hanoi Hilton. The most famous of which, the future Senator from Arizona, John McCain, recounts his years in the prison and the moment that the Vietnamese almost broke his indominable spirit. You will hear several other soldiers tell their stories as well. Then we will shift gears to the burgeoning scandal that would soon dominate the Nixon Administration, Watergate. You will hear ABC News set the stage for the coming sentencing of the Watergate burglary defendants and we will be introduced to a cast of characters from G. Gordon Liddy, to Judge Sirica to future Chairman of the Watergate Committee in the Senate Sam Irvin of North Carolina. In this episode we will also meet Geoff Shepard, the last living defense Attorney for Richard Nixon, he had been a mid level employee, and White House Fellow , there working on policy. He would move up to being Nixon Attorney Fred Buzhardt's right hand man. He will play a major role in the telling of our story on "Bridging the Political Gap" over the next three seasons. You can read up on Mr. Shepard and get copies of his three landmark books at his website: https://shepardonwatergate.com/ and starting with this episode you will hear excerpts from his extraordinary podcasts with the Nixon Foundation and its then President Hugh Hewitt titled "Known Unknowns" , here is a link to the first episode and you can then go from there to the rest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWxWKSK0cmc We will be using a lot of these conversations throughout our series on Watergate over the next three seasonsFinally our show will then return to the POW's as they are released and we get to hear their stories of returning, finally, home. It remains perhaps the true high point of one of the greatest Presidencies in all of American History, the Presidency of Richard Nixon.
