This year stretched me in ways I never expected. My heart ached throughout so much of 2025, but I also grew in ways I never thought I could. In this episode, I share the most meaningful lessons I learned about emotional healing, personal growth, faith, relationships, and learning to sit with discomfort instead of running from it. We talk about the difference between processing and obsessing, why seeking peace through information and understanding eventually falls short, and how Scripture points us toward a peace that doesn't rely on clarity or control. I also unpack how loneliness isn't always about lacking people, but about the deeper fear that no one truly has you—and how faith reshapes that belief. We explore why venting can sometimes keep us stuck in anger rather than move us toward healing, and how prayer, stillness, and honesty with God invite real transformation. DEFENDANT: Tori Amos EVIDENCE: Cloud Watcher California Red Blend SCENE OF THE CRIME: "The Finest Vineyards in California"  -- Hey friend — welcome to the chaos: we opened a grocery-store red called Cloud Watcher (hello, green-pepper nose and dark-plum cocoa vibes), wrestled over a billion points in Corrections Corner, and brought our dog Hermes along to supervise. We sip, we sigh, and we trade childhood-cloud stories while debating whether cloud-watching is relaxing or suspiciously boring.    Then things get deliciously melodic because our “defendant” today is Tori Amos. We peel back her origin story — piano prodigy at Peabody, early L.A. band experiments, exile to the UK, and the piano-driven masterpiece Little Earthquakes — and run through highlights from Choirgirl Hotel to Boys for Pele, Night of Hunters and beyond. There's talk of kazoo deep cuts, mood rings, curly hair aesthetics, and why Tori's lyrics made us fall in love with poetry all over again.   Of course we couldn't resist a game: a twelve-question cross-examination where we read lyrics and guessed whether they were Tori or Not-Tori. In Wagging Tongues and Tittle Tattle: Gossip, Rumor, and Reputation in a Small Southern Town (University of Georgia Press, 2025), Dr. Sylvia Hoffert calls on a particularly rich collection of primary sources, including diaries, letters, oral histories, census data, court documents, church records, and psychiatric hospital logs, all relating to Hillsborough, North Carolina, to argue that gossip and rumor were central to the formation of interpersonal relationships and an integral part of small-town life in the antebellum South. They exposed the insecurities and anxieties of the town's inhabitants. Indeed, they served as important weapons in the power struggle between the white slaveholding elite—who tried to exert, maintain, and consolidate their control over community life—and the Black, white, and mixed-race men and women, free and enslaved, who did their best to challenge the socioeconomic status quo. And they exposed fissures in the social fabric that discretion, good manners, and historical amnesia could not obscure. The result was that, on a day-to-day basis, the shady streets of Hillsborough may have seemed peaceful to the casual observer. But underneath all that tranquility, the town was ripe with competition and conflict as the inhabitants used gossip to negotiate relationships with their neighbors and make places for themselves in the social, economic, and political hierarchy of the community. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars.
