Episode 307 - On Gossip Have you ever realized that a "harmless" conversation can sometimes start to tear someone down? In this episode, the friars talk about gossip, why it can be so easy to fall into, why it often feels like connection, and why it never really gives us the communion we're looking for. Whether it happens at work, in friendships, in community, or around the people we love, gossip can quietly train our hearts to tear down instead of build up. The friars reflect on the deeper questions beneath gossip: What am I seeking here? Am I trading authenticity for connection? Am I willing to let my discipleship reach even the way I speak about others? This conversation is a gentle invitation to bring Jesus into our words, our relationships, and the places where we feel tempted to belong at someone else's expense. Join us as we learn to speak with greater charity, courage, and freedom, and let our words become a place where Christ is present. The Poco a Poco podcast happens because of many generous donors, including recurring monthly donations of any amount. Thinking about helping out? You can give at https://spiritjuice.org/supportpoco. Why do we gossip, and is it actually bad for you? Cognitive neuroscientist Dr. Caroline Leaf unpacks the science of gossip with special guest Dominique Leaf, her daughter and the show's producer: the difference between the kind of gossip that bonds us and the kind that damages us. Gossip carries a lot of guilt for most people. It also has a long history. Gossip is one of the oldest social tools humans have, and a large part of how our species learned to cooperate in groups far bigger than a family. It can do real harm too. The intent behind it decides which way it goes. You'll learn why gossip isn't automatically toxic, what actually decides whether it helps or harms, and what a back-and-forth conversation physically does inside your brain and body. Dr. Leaf walks through Yuval Noah Harari's argument that shared stories built civilization, Dunbar's 150 rule, and why the three-person "triad" is the most unstable and most damaging shape a conversation can take. Dominique brings the questions most of us are too embarrassed to ask.
Ever feel like gossip spreads faster than you can stop it? In today's episode, I am diving deep into the destructive nature of gossip. It's more than just idle talk—it's a heart issue that affects our spiritual health and community harmony. I also break down the biblical warnings found in Proverbs and James, helping us understand why our words carry such weight. I'm not just talking about the problem; I'm giving you practical, faith-filled tools to guard your ears, close your mouth, and protect your peace. In this episode, I cover: The Anatomy of Gossip: Understanding the different roles people play (power trippers, lightning rods, and more). Biblical Wisdom: What Proverbs and James have to say about the power of our speech. Practical Filters: Two questions you must ask before engaging in a conversation that feels like gossip. Heart Health: Why our mouths usually reveal what's going on in our hearts. Guarding Your Temple: Practical steps to maintain unity and spiritual health. We all know words matter, but it's easy to underestimate the impact of the conversations we have when the other person isn't in the room. Gossip doesn't always start with bad intentions, yet it can quietly shape relationships, reputations, and even our own hearts. This week we'll look at why we're drawn to these conversations, what Jesus had to say about them, and how choosing our words more carefully can change the way we relate to others. Every day, we respond to people, to pressure, opinions, criticism, and even the voice in our own head. But our responses are rarely as small as they seem. They shape relationships, reveal what's happening beneath the surface, and create a ripple effect throughout our lives. Your Response(ability) is an invitation to slow down, pay attention, and consider what our words and reactions are really doing.
In this week's bonus episode Billy and Sam discuss their own experiences around calling out offensive language, and ask the question: is "straight passing" cringe?Want to write to us with your questions, dilemmas, confessions and hot takes? Title: The Friendship That Never Lets GoSpeaker: Ben CampbellDate: 5th July 2026Location: Adelaide, Australia Summary:"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." This episode explores what true friendship looks like, using a personal story about a decades long relationship as the starting point before turning to one of the greatest friendship stories in the Bible: Jonathan and David in 1 Samuel. Unfamiliar with the show? This episode is a great entry point. It breaks down the qualities that make a real friendship work: loyalty, honesty, sacrifice and trust, and shows how those same qualities describe a relationship with Jesus. Rather than treating friendship with Jesus as a one way street where we only turn to Him in hard times, the episode challenges people to see it as a genuine two way relationship built on shared time, honest conversation and mutual care. The episode also covers what can damage friendships, particularly gossip and talking behind someone's back, and offers practical, scripture based guidance on how to sharpen and support the people close to you rather than tearing them down. Key Points: True friendship is a two way relationship built on loyalty, honesty, shared time and sacrifice, not a one sided arrangement where only one person gives. The friendship between Jonathan and David shows sacrificial love in action, including Jonathan giving up his robe, weapons and eventually his claim to the throne for David's sake. Gossip, whispering and talking behind someone's back destroys trust and friendship. Removing that kind of talk (like taking wood off a fire) allows conflict to settle. Iron sharpening iron means real friends challenge and strengthen each other rather than just offering comfort, and faithful correction from a friend matters even when it is hard to hear. Praying for friends, even when they have let you down, is one of the most powerful expressions of love and friendship. The Bible gives us significant counsel about how to treat sin and sinners -- especially sin by brethren or former brethren. Unfortunately, it is rarely heeded, and this leads to a slew of unintended consequences. Let's see what the Bible tells us in regard to this phrase.Proverbs 17:9 KJVHe that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.1 Peter 4:7-8 KJVBut the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.James 5:19-20 KJVBrethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.Related Podcasts:— Unto Whom Much is Given— The Law of Faith— The Law and Grace— What of Works?— Missing the Mark— Faith and the Christian Experience— Obedience is the Consequence, not the Cause— Search Me, O God— Forgiveness is Our Solemn Duty— Beware Self-Righteousness— Godly Sorrow, True Repentance— Why Do We Seek Wisdom?— Having the Right PerspectiveRelated Podcasts at TrueWisdom:— Joseph and His Conflicts— Squandered Blessings— Grace, Grace, and More GraceText UsSupport the showSend questions or comments to: BibleQuestions@ASBzone.comThe Key Principles of Effective Bible Study is a resource which outlines core concepts shown in the Scriptures that will help you to better understand many Biblical themes and doctrines. Ashley Winstead IS BACK! Gare and I ask all our burning questions about Hot Girl Murder Club. Listen to hear about: How Ashley Winstead wrote Hot Girl Murder Club as an act of creative defiance. Ashley shares the publishing and Hollywood conversations that told her feminist revenge stories were "over"—and why that made her determined to write one anyway. The surprising inspiration behind the novel's unique structure. Ashley discusses how Dune, historical dissertations, Patty Hearst, and mythic storytelling shaped the book, including an early version that was set decades in the future. A deep dive into celebrity culture, parasocial relationships, and internet outrage. The conversation explores why public opinion swings so dramatically, the complexity of figures like Lena Dunham, and how social media has changed the way we judge people. Why stories about women's anger, friendship, and justice are resonating right now. We discuss sisterhood, feminist thrillers, revenge narratives, and why readers still crave these conversations despite industry assumptions. How gossip, pop culture, and "frothy" entertainment can be surprisingly political. From celebrity scandals to folklore and urban legends, Ashley explains why seemingly light stories often become powerful vehicles for social commentary. Send us Fan MailIf peer support is supposed to be a safe place, why do so many first responders avoid it because they're afraid their story will end up in the station, the briefing room, or the chief's office? Stephanie Conn get blunt about the real problem behind “peer support doesn't work” and it's usually not the idea, it's trust, confidentiality, and what happens when one person treats private conversations like gossip. We walk through what strong peer support programs do differently: clear boundaries, transparent language about the narrow exceptions to confidentiality, and the courage to name the elephant in the room when a team's reputation has been damaged. We also dig into something that doesn't get said enough in police, fire, EMS, and dispatch culture: sometimes the healthiest move for a peer supporter is to hit pause. Stepping back because your capacity is shot isn't weakness, it's integrity, and pretending you're fine while telling others to “take care of yourself” is the fastest way to lose credibility. From there, we shift into resilience that actually fits first responder life. We talk about writing and teaching in plain language, translating research into tools people will use on shift, and why understanding the “why” behind strategies matters. Nutrition, stress hormones, sleep, and the messy reality of progress all come up, including the reminder that growth looks more like a squiggly line than a straight climb. We also preview a new peer support book and where to find it, plus a simple question we think every guest should answer: What is your why?If this helped you think differently about peer support and first responder mental health, subscribe, share the episode with a coworker, and leave a review so more people can find it.You can find everything about Stephanie, including her books at her website at https://firstresponderpsychology.comHer LinkedIn account is https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-stephanie-conn/DeemedFit: First Responder OwnedWe are a first responder owned company looking to get first responders in the best mental shape.Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 625 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Hot industry gossip, scary British villains, and Strymon level up.We are coming in hot this week with scurrilous gossip about a new industry merger and the guys prove that they have none of the clues but all of the speculation. Ash is sick, in denial that school holidays have started and has a newfound respect for every woman who's ever had an epidural after seeing the size of that needle. Meanwhile, Matt's just landed from the Gold Coast and is already off to Bali (must be nice), but not before spiralling over the family plane seating plan. The guys tackle the screen time debate, why parents might be getting pocket money all wrong, the canteen gossip that's draining your wallet, and why a dad settling a baby in public gets a standing ovation while mums don't even get eye contact.
