Maybe the most celebrated day of the year is Mother's Day, and rightly so. We have some very special things planned for Mother's Day this year…and oh yes I will be sharing a short teaching about a mom in the Bible. I guarantee you don't want to miss this message. How would you describe your mom? A soccer mom? A helicopter mom? A granola mom? Maybe you're a mom now who is just trying to survive. Whatever kind of mom you are and whatever season you find yourself in, know that God sees you. Join us as we celebrate mothers and remember God's faithfulness to His children.
Moms have an incredible influence—sometimes for good, sometimes not so much. In this message, we take a closer look at how a mother's words and actions can shape lives in powerful ways. We'll explore some biblical examples, like how Rebekah's questionable advice (Genesis 25-27) and Herodias' destructive influence (Mark 6) left a lasting impact. But we'll also celebrate the positive side—like Mary, the mother of John Mark (Acts 12), who created a space for faith to thrive, and Eunice and Lois (2 Timothy 1), who passed down their sincere faith to Timothy. We'll also dig into some encouraging truths from Isaiah 55:11, Proverbs 22:6, and James 5:16—reminding us that a mom's prayers and guidance can make all the difference. Whether you're a mom, have a mom, or just need some inspiration, this message is for you!

On this episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell, Jamie and Adam listen to Bell's next pick, Mother Mother's "O My Heart". Released in 2008, it was their second album. A band local to us in Vancouver, they got their start on Quadra Island, which is between the mainland and Vancouver Island. In 2020-1, several tracks off of "O My Heart" went viral on TikTok, leading to a resurgence of interest in this album. But will the boys have a resurgence of interest in listening to this album again? Will they instead try to throw this record into a "Burning Pile"? Come along and find out!
It's always a bit nerve-wracking when an artist we've covered reaches out, but it's pretty cool when they enjoyed their episode and want to join us! This week, we're thrilled to welcome Tracy Bonham—whose hit "Mother Mother" we previously discussed—to talk about another '90s classic: Luscious Jackson's "Naked Eye." Tracy shares insights on her own career, her upcoming album, and the challenges of being labeled a one-hit wonder, while we dive into the unique sound and underrated legacy of Luscious Jackson. Interview by Angela CroudaceRyan Goldemann, lead singer and guitarist of Mother Mother, discussed the band's latest album with HEAVY, Grief Chapter, which dives deep into themes of death and existentialism while simultaneously celebrating the beauty of life.“Grief Chapter is kind of like a concept album around death and grief and mourning,” Goldemann explains. “But it's not as sad as it sounds. It's more about using those things as a way to inspire and appreciate the gift of existence.” He notes that the album exudes a newfound confidence, with sonics described as “really tough and almost muscular.” The band spent nearly 100 days recording at Bryan Adams' studio in Vancouver, which Goldemann fondly describes as a “luxurious” experience.Reflecting on the band's recent tour in Australia, he shares, “It was amazing. It was more than you could ever ask for an entrance into a new market… There were a couple thousand kids in Sydney!” The overwhelming support has made a significant impact as the band expands their reach.Social media has also played a crucial role in their growth, particularly on platforms like TikTok. “It's wonderful. Yeah, life changing,” Goldemann says of their songs gaining traction online. “We're just thrilled that we've been able to connect with all these new people through TikTok.” The band has embraced this new medium, even participating in duets and responding to fans directly.Mother Mother has also developed a strong following within the LGBTQIA community. “We weren't writing specifically for that community; we just wrote about the human condition in a broad way,” Goldemann explains. He appreciates the organic nature of this connection, recognising that it arose without any contrived intent. When discussing the themes present in the new album, he emphasizes the exploration of existentialism and spirituality, stating, “We just wanted to capture the band as successfully as possible.” He acknowledges their evolution over the years, attributing their growth to the resources they've gained as a full band. “With the resources came more experimentation,” he explains. “Now, with Grief Chapter, it's a bit of a mix of everything.”Goldemann shares a few personal favourites from their catalogue, highlighting Hayloft 2 as a crowd favourite for its energy and ease of performance. In contrast, he cherishes playing Grief Chapter for its emotional depth, which fosters a profound connection with the audience. The band's visual aesthetics are equally captivating. Goldemann discusses their collaboration with filmmaker Colin Minihan for the music video of Explode. “We just wanted it to be kind of psychedelic and a good portrayal of the band performing,” he says, emphasising a desire for authenticity over a complex narrative. As for current musical inspirations, Goldemann cites Adrian Linker from Big Thief as an interesting talent he's been enjoying lately. “She is quite a profound talent,” he states.Mother Mother continue to pBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Send us a textTracy Bonham sits down to discuss the highs and lows of her music career as well as the challenges in love, parenting, and her breast cancer diagnosis. Tracy Bonham is a classically trained violinist and pianist turned alternative singer-songwriter who rose to fame in 1996 with her twice GRAMMY™nominatedalbum, The Burdens of Being Upright(Island Records). This debut album cast Bonham into the global spotlight with MTV fame and major radio airplay with her #1 alternative chart-topping song Mother Mother, an anthem for disgruntled teenagers of all ages. While so many of her songs have been placed in film and TV throughout the decades, you might have most recently heard Mother Mother in Yellow Jackets season 1 episode 2. Over the past 27 years, Bonham's albums and live performances have shown what it is to be an ever-evolving artist. While Bonham sings, she moves from guitar to violin, from violin to piano, and back again. When playing live, her songs from the 90s blend and blur with stylistic changes that she has created over time making her entire repertoire make sense as an entire body of work. She plays the old and new material and even though the songs span thirty years they all continue to be equally relevant. Bonham will be joined by upright bassist Rene Hart (David Amram, James Hunter) and drummer Alvester Garnett (Regina Carter, Abbey Lincoln), and with her new material she connects to something deeper than ever, her true self. Most of the new songs are performed on the piano giving her the chance to lean back on what made her fall in love with music in the first place. Borrowing harmonic structures and beautiful melodies from her favorite classical romantic composers, Bonham stretches herself artistically to combine this rediscovered passion with her unique and quirky songwriting style to create musical alchemy. This purifying process most certainly acts as a vehicle for inner transformation for Bonham. "It's like going back to the spark I had as a very young musician, discovering the beauty of Ravel and DeBussy and reclaiming that spark and everything that has happened after that". Bonham speaks of her current line-up, "Playing with incredible jazz musicians like Rene and Alvester has opened my mind and is now giving me the support I have always needed to spread my wings and fly. I am really enjoying exploring the intersections and overlaps of where classical and jazz meet without excluding my alternative rock sensibilities. These dudes can rock too. The three of us playing together is definitely my happy place"People Magazine: https://open.spotify.com/artist/6RaSfqo4f0b42iNouQeAKK?si=vuFrzhFYQm2Am2rigsy3JQSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/6RaSfqo4f0b42iNouQeAKK?si=vuFrzhFYQm2Am2rigsy3JQ&nd=1&dlsi=997a4b6a968e483e***If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comThis episode is on YouTube: https://youtu.be/jx8FL3BQqRcFollow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomHave a question or want to be a guest on the podcast email: dauna@bettertopodcast.comAudio production by Rich Zei of Third Ear AudioIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast SuziUpcoming guests: https://www.dmneedom.com/better-topodcast©2024 Better To...Podcast with D. The Jeremy White Show welcomes Mother Mother frontman Ryan Guldemond! Mother Mother are about to announce a true coast to coast Canadian tour that will bring the band from Victoria, BC all the way to Halifax and Moncton, with stops in Kelowna, Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg, London, St. Catharines, Montreal in between. The band have been on a whirlwind tour of the world, from Europe to the United States, and will be heading to Latin America, and Australia soon as well. Their shows have been massively successful, as you can see from the photos here, here and here. It's easy to see in those photos just how passionate the fans around the world are for Mother Mother . What's harder to see in photos, but is undeniably true is how young, and diverse the fan base is - it's even called out in the first comment on that third link. In particular, the LGBTQ community has flocked to the band's shows around the world. In part, this is because they identify with the band's lyrics and ethos, but also because the band have always celebrated non-conformity, and encouraged people to be true to themselves, whoever they are. Major label debuts for any artist can be a double-edged sword. Recording a group of songs you've had years to craft means they've spent plenty of time in the woodshed, but the pressure to produce a hit, especially in the back half of the 90s, means sometimes the obvious singles get the most attention in the studio and post-production. That is the semi-issue with Tracy Bonham's 1996 freshman release The Burdens of Being Upright. Chock full of interesting, catchy tunes like the hit single "Mother Mother," the bouncy "The One," the punky "Bulldog," and others helps the record fly by in entertaining fashion. As high as the highs are, there are no low lows, just some disappointing valleys that sound like the first draft of what could have been much more. Back in season 4, I spoke to Annie Macmanus just as she was about to make the big leap from mega-DJ to... something entirely new. It's fascinating to see how much of what we talked about has since come to pass.My guest this week is a business woman, broadcaster, curator, tastemaker and DJ. She headlines festivals, hosts one of BBC Radio 1's flagship shows, was Europe's biggest female DJ and has her own hit podcast Changes with Annie Macmanus. And now, as if that wasn't e-bloody-nough (bc let's not forget the two kids), Annie has written her first novel, Mother Mother. Oh and she's cool. And nice. (In the best possible way. Not in the I'm too lazy to think of a proper adjective kind of way.)Over the next 45 minutes, Annie talks about the unexpected impact of turning 40, growing up with her fans and why middle aged women are a force to be reckoned with. Although this was recorded before she resigned from her job hosting Radio 1's flagship show, she's candid about saying goodbye to DJing and how it feels to start again professionally, why she's a control-fan and how she learnt to be comfortable in her own skin. Plus she gives me a lesson in radical no-ness!You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at Bookshop.org, including the book that accompanies this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too by Sam Baker and Mother Mother by Annie Macmanus. The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Emily Sandford. I'd love to hear what you think - please rate and review, or let me know on twitter @sambaker or instagram @theothersambaker. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Annie Macmanus is a voice we've been hearing for twenty years. First as a presenter and tastemaker for the UK's biggest dance music radio show, as a festival headlining DJ, as host of her podcast ‘Changes with Annie Macmanus', and now as an author of her best-selling novel ‘Mother Mother'. Reaching the pinnacle of success with a relentless schedule headlining a 2am show in Ibiza every week before flying back in the morning to present her daily radio show, it took the pandemic lockdowns for Annie to realise she wanted something completely different from her life. So she started again. This conversation explores her decision to check in with herself and walk away from a 17 year career at the BBC to explore her passions of writing and podcasts. She presents the challenging notion that your life needs to have a revolution every 20 years for it to remain meaningful and fulfilling. We had the pleasure of interviewing DYLYN over Zoom video! Born Gwendolyn Lewis, DYLYN's recent single, "Liberate Me" highlights the singer's ability to confluence eras, styles, and emotions all into one. Her debut LP, The Sixty90s, an homage to the grit of the 90s and the warmth of the 60s. The 13-track debut record features the most recent singles “Skin and Bone,” “Liar,” “Hellbound,” “Hurt,” “Bring On The Blues,” “Liberate Me” and the newest single, “What A Ride.” The Sixty90s cements DYLYN's vision of a confluence of eras, styles, and emotions colliding, fusing moments of elation, agony, ecstasy, and triumph into an anachronistic symphony of indie-pop melodies, industrial-inflected heavy rock, and anthemic alternative. With the help of producers Ryan Guldemond (of Mother Mother) and Parker Bossley (bassist for The Mounties, Hot Hot Heat) we see her momentum come to life. “I'm referencing two of my favorite eras, it's not confined or boxed into one or the other. The fusion revealed itself as the songwriting and production developed. It naturally took on a darker vintage yet futuristic edge” shares Gwen. We want to hear from you! At the peak of her career, in the early 1900's, Utah native Maude Adams was America's most famous stage actress, pulling in a million dollars a year. But fame was neither her goal nor ambition. Rather, fame was something her mother, the actress Annie Adams, wanted but never realized herself.

Today we chat with keyboardist and vocalist of Mother Mother, Jasmin Parkin! We had such an awesome chat with Jasmin – she told us all about how they recently blew up on Tik Tok (without them knowing!), how that has translated into going on tour, their upcoming music and how she no joke, took up jazz piano because her name was Jas! It certainly worked out for her though! This is an interview not to be missed!

We had the pleasure of interviewing GLDMTH over Zoom video.Frontman and songwriter, Ryan Guldemond of alt-rock touring and streaming giant MOTHER MOTHER has released his deeply personal solo project GLDMTH (pronounced gold mouth) today. As a true multi-media experience, the eleven-track album arrives with an official video for lead single “The People” which was directed, shot, and edited by Guldemond himself. The introspective video evokes the feeling of an experimental short film exposing the poignant beauty of the everyday life from which Guldemond draws his work's awestruck and melancholic spiri. GLDMTH is available now on DSP's, vinyl, and CD.“GLDMTH is a project where I'm able to show artistic reverence for how I see the world, which is innately strange and beautiful and profound and mundane and poignant and funny and wholesome and disturbing,” Guldemond explains. “From people, to nature, to dystopia, birdsong and dreams, I try to let the cues of life fuel the sound and imagery of GLDMTH. Whether it's a conversation, the rhythm of a train, or caution tape strung up on a swing set during a pandemic, it's all fuel for the project which is driven by music, photography, poetry and videography. I feel very grateful to have a space where I'm able to be so freely creative, using my favourite mediums, to metabolize the human experience in an artful manner.” In addition to the hauntingly beautiful official video for “The People,” each track from the album has been released as a lyric video featuring animated imagery. In addition, Guldemond curated photographs from his archive, resulting in a visual representation for each song on the album. These striking images make up the artwork for the physical package. See below for several examples of these photographs, and insights into a few of the songs from Guldemond. We want to hear from you! This show is a first for the podcast. DYLYN is the first guest I've had that I saw live before having on the podcast. She opened for Mother Mother and I was so impressed that when the opportunity arose, I reached out and scheduled this. And I'm so glad I did. DYLYN is an old soul. We chatted about classic rock before we get down to the business of actually talking about HER music! Even though rock was what she grew up on, she began her career as a pop act, complete with background dancers. But after a serious bout of burn out, she took some time off to go back to school. That's when one of her dance tracks started getting traction. She took the opportunity to pivot to the music she really wanted to write. She met up with Ryan Guldemond from Mother Mother to write some music and clicked immediately. She talks about horror movie influences, playing the same encore twice in one show, performing at a fan's prom, and changing her name as she changed her sound. She's a fan of classic rock, classic Star Trek, and was once in a band called Robert's Plant. So follow her @callmedylyn on social media. Get the new EP that's out the same day as this podcast drops!
