Come on, come on, put your hands into the fire and brimstone of Ivo's student music journalism. Does his article about the premier Cornwallian bedwetters of the mid noughties rehash too many of the themes of his Bloc Party piece? Well, (a) it doesn't, and (b) we think you'll enjoy Alex hauling him over the coals for his straw men, his definition of “spooky” and his prioritisation of Scroobius Pip over the original Ten Commandments. We are trying to be heroic in an age of modernity, and, in other news, we are releasing an ep from the old Patreon vaults (shout out to the £3.80 legends of yesteryear): a deep dive between gigs into the sinister hum of Ivo's music journalism circa 2007 (or was it 2005?), going in to bat for the second Bloc Party album, musing on what it's like to be in a band (not that we'd know), and commissioning a fantastically speculative bit of data-harvesting for a starting price of £200. In this episode, I'm excited to welcome a very special guest: Duncan Lloyd from Maxïmo Park.Duncan has been a driving force behind Maxïmo Park's distinctive sound, known for their energetic blend of indie rock and post-punk revival. It was a real pleasure to sit down and chat with him about his life and career.During our conversation, we explored Duncan's journey—from his early days growing up, to his experiences in school, and his time in the local music and clubbing scene. We also discussed his musical influences and some of the records that have profoundly shaped him as an artist. From personal anecdotes to his creative process with Maxïmo Park, this episode offers a deep dive into Duncan's world, both as a solo artist and a member of one of the UK's most enduring indie bands.I hope you enjoy listening to our chat as much as I enjoyed recording it. With their debut album, A Certain Trigger (2005), they quickly distinguished themselves with sharp, infectious songs, thoughtful lyrics, and lead singer Paul Smith's charismatic stage presence. Tracks like "Apply Some Pressure" and "Graffiti" became instant indie anthems, praised for their raw energy and heartfelt storytelling.Duncan Lloyd, as the band's lead guitarist and one of its primary songwriters, played a crucial role in shaping Maxïmo Park's sound. His guitar work brings an intricate, sometimes angular, quality that complements the band's emotional depth. Over the years, they've released several critically acclaimed albums, including Quicken the Heart (2009) and Too Much Information (2014), all while evolving their sound but maintaining the same passion that drew fans in from the beginning.Beyond Maxïmo Park, Duncan has explored other creative outlets, including his solo work, which showcases a more introspective side. My guest this week is 5 time MPG mastering engineer of the year Katie Tavini, who's work includes Rudimental, Bloc Party, Ash, We Are Scientists, Nadine Shah, Arlo Parks, Los Bitchos and many more. Since starting in 2014, Katie has grown to become one of the mostin-demand mastering engineers in the UK, who's at home with everything from the heaviest metal to the lushest orchestral works and everything in between. Katie is also a founding member of Weird Jungle, a collective of independent mastering engineers in the UK dedicated to helping bands, artists and labels release the best possible version of their work. During our interview Katie talked about becoming a mastering engineer, how mastering has changed in the last few years, things that mixers sometimes overlook, starting Weird Jungle, and so much more. I spoke with Katie via zoom from her studio in Liverpool. On the intro we look at how mainstream success isn't as big as it used to be, and in honor of Fathers Day, ultimate Dad Rock bands.
Jim from the Film Rage podcast returns to Soundtrack Your Life to talk to Nicole and Ryan about the soundtrack to the 2023 Emerald Fennell film, Saltburn. Jim was previously a guest for our episode on David Byrne's True Stories. The movie had a moment in 2023 with its infamous needle drop of Sophie Ellis-Bextor's “Murder on the Dancefloor”, which is used in one of the film's most famous scenes. The soundtrack is full of songs from 2007 and older (the movie takes place in 2007), and there are indie and pop acts like Arcade Fire, MGMT, Bloc Party, Girls Aloud and Cold War Kids to remind you that you're in 2007. We Discuss:Our favorite non-"Murder on the Dancefloor" needledropsThe juxtaposition between the songs and Anthony Willis' scoreOther songs from the aughts that could've fit the soundtrack / mood of the movieWhat worked and didn't work for us in this divisive filmFor More Information about Jim / Film Rage:Website: https://www.filmrageyyc.comIG: https://www.instagram.com/filmrageyycTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/filmrageyycIf you'd like to support Soundtrack Your Life, we have a Patreon, where you'll get bonus episodes and more! This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podscribe - https://podscribe.com/privacySpotify Ad Analytics - https://www.spotify.com/us/legal/ad-analytics-privacy-policy/Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

Inspired by early punk and new wave, Adam Greenspan's journey through the vast soundscapes of the late 80s, to industrial and alt 90s, marked a lifelong immersion in music. With over 25 years in the industry, his career ignited with the engineering of Faith No More's "Album of the Year." Later, a serendipitous connection with fellow producer Nick Launay led to fruitful collaborations, shaping albums for luminaries such as Arcade Fire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Supergrass, The Cribs, and Refused. Greenspan's recent productions have garnered critical acclaim, notably securing a 2019 Mercury Prize shortlist for IDLES' "Joy as an Act of Resistance" and a 2020 Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album with Thomas Dybdal's "All These Things." His return to IDLES resulted in a UK #1 album with "Ultra Mono," highlighting his enduring impact on contemporary music. Continuing to shape sonic landscapes, Greenspan's recent projects include works with Bloc Party and Flogging Molly. His approach is characterized by close collaboration with artists, aiming to distill a sound and style uniquely theirs while encouraging them to explore new territories. Emphasizing the visceral impact of music and its ability to evoke emotion and movement, Greenspan rejects formulas in favor of capturing genuine artistic expression. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT: Working with Nick Launay Going backward on the studio ladder to make for more opportunities Having the right attitude to stand out when you're getting started Working from rough mixes Pushing the boundaries of an artist Leaning into what makes an artist special Creative approaches to using poorly recorded tracks Creating a 3D sound using effects Using distortion on vocals Panning effects How to use stereo wideners effectively Capturing the room and making your tracks sound big Making the most out of a small room Eliminating noise on your tracks To learn more about Adam "Atom" Greenspan, visit: https://www.atomgreenspan.com/ For tips on how to improve your mixes, visit https://masteryourmix.com/ Looking for 1-on-1 feedback and training to help you create pro-quality mixes? Should we remove bladder cancers piece-meal by chopping them into little pieces, or should we try and remove en bloc with a margin around the base?? This very nice randomised controlled trial from our friends in Hong Kong demonstrates that the recurrence rate is significantly lower if we use the all-too-rarely used en bloc technique. Dr Jeremy Teoh from the Chinese University Hong Kong joins us to discuss his paper just published in European Urology. Check out the YouTube version for a video of the technique. Also available as an audio only podcast wherever you get your podcasts Full paper here
Back to this century again for our favourite songs of 2008, with a suitably eclectic mix taking in sparkly pop bangers, terrifying folk metal soundscapes, ultraviolent jungle, positive hip-hop & industrial speaker worriers. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) -Agalloch, Alphabeat, American Music Club, Bloc Party, Bon Iver, Boris, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Cult Of Luna, The Cure, Cut Off Your Hands, Death Cab For Cutie, Elbow, Fleet Foxes, Girls Aloud, Grouper, DJ Hazard, July Skies, Kings Of Leon, The Last Shadow Puppets, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, Nine Inch Nails, Opeth, Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man, Portishead, Retribution Gospel Choir, Sigur Ros, The Streets, Thomas Tantrum, The Watson Twins, and James Yorkston. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Twitter – https://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

Os solos de guitarra desse episodio são, Bob Dylan ao vivo com My Back Pages (participação do Roger McGuinn, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Eric Clapton & George Harrison!), True Sounds of Liberty com Flowers By The Door, Bloc Party com Like Eating Glass e, finalmente, NOFX, com Stickin In My Eye, Johnny Appleseed e Straight Edge. Breaking news! It's not just the Supreme Court that sucks - it's ALSO the executive and legislative branches! This week we're sharing Michael's appearance on Bloc Party, talking about how oral arguments went down in the SCOTUS cases that could make or break Biden's student loan cancellation initiative. Eleni Schirmer from the Debt Collective also joins in, to cringe at Roberts' lawnmower commentary and reflect on the way Biden is (or more notably…is not) exercising his executive authority. Bloc Party is a show from Justice Democrats about the fight for the soul of the Democratic Party, featuring progressive champions challenging the status quo from inside the halls of power and the organizers transforming the party's agenda from the outside.
