Jordan Kurland is a partner in Noise Pop Industries and the co-founder and partner of Brilliant Corners Artist Management. As a band manager, Jordan works with the likes of Death Cab For Cutie, The Postal Service, Toro y Moi, The New Pornographers, Perfume Genius, and Soccer Mommy. So he's played a huge role in ushering in some of the biggest indie rock acts of the day, but he's also an obsessive jazz fan and record collector. In this episode, Jordan selects five heady, funky, and esoteric jazz recordings that speak to his deep knowledge and the expansiveness of his collection. And along the way, we'll learn about the nuts and bolts of being a band manager to the stars, the educated guesswork of new artist development, and the joys and challenges of record collecting in the digital age. Flight Mode are a three-piece emo band from Oslo, Norway that have been around since 2021. They've released a succession of three EP's, all with names derived from times and places. Out the gate this band hits a nostalgic tinge, which is bolstered by the wistful music they make. Clean guitars noodle over these mid-tempo tracks, with an intentional, quivering vocals delivered with palatable vocal deliveries. It's carrying the torch that bands like Death Cab For Cutie and The Appleseed Cast did in the early 2000's, with nods to the midwest emo sound of the late 90's. Recently their three EP's were compiled and released all together by Tiny Engines, which is the essential here as their discography to date has been flawless. Enjoy. Thanks for listening!!! The month of M-arch continues! And we wouldn't be good 30-something millennial white boys if we didn't pay tribute to perhaps the most 30-something millennial white boy band of all time, Death Cab for Cutie. We did Transatlanticism a while back, so we thought it was high time we reviewed Plans, their follow up album. And don't worry, we of course play Smash or Pass. The 2024 election is upon us and there's no better way to celebrate than to cast your vote early or on this upcoming Tuesday. The second best way to celebrate is by going back and reliving Pearl Jam's 2004 run on the Vote For Change Tour! Through a run of six swing states including Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Missouri and Florida as well as North Carolina, which this episode will focus on, the objective for this tour was to get people to register to vote while speaking out against President George W. Bush and the Iraq War. As with their entire history, the democratic process has been incredibly important to Pearl Jam, and this is one of the most important runs that exemplifies that. Because they were touring with Death Cab For Cutie and Tim Robbins project, GOB Roberts, setlists in 2004 were not quite the marathon shows that we got a glimpse of the prior year. This set is 21 songs long, but only features a 12 song main set. We'll talk about how this was not the best night for Ed's health as he was battling illness, which would leave a bit left to be desired on powerful vocal songs like Brain Of J and Grievance. There is also quite a memorable moment in Do The Evolution where an entire portion of the song was completely disregarded. An important one at that! We'll also talk about some great moments including Long Road opening up the encore and a Blitzkrieg Bop Daughter tag turned into "Hey Ho, Let's Vote!" This episode was selected over 2004 shows due to the unfortunate devastation of Hurricane Helene through Asheville. Alongside this episode, we ran a fundraiser to donate to some local organizations helping to rehabilitate the community - Beloved Asheville, Asheville Survival and Pansy Collective. Stay tuned in this episode for our announcement of how much we were able to raise! Ramy Youssef Returns: You Already Love Him(Recorded October 2023) Ramy Youssef was one of the first and most popular guests on Working It Out back in 2020, and now he's back with updates to some of the same very material he worked out the first time around. Back to this century again for our favourite songs of 2008, with a suitably eclectic mix taking in sparkly pop bangers, terrifying folk metal soundscapes, ultraviolent jungle, positive hip-hop & industrial speaker worriers. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) -Agalloch, Alphabeat, American Music Club, Bloc Party, Bon Iver, Boris, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Cult Of Luna, The Cure, Cut Off Your Hands, Death Cab For Cutie, Elbow, Fleet Foxes, Girls Aloud, Grouper, DJ Hazard, July Skies, Kings Of Leon, The Last Shadow Puppets, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, Nine Inch Nails, Opeth, Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man, Portishead, Retribution Gospel Choir, Sigur Ros, The Streets, Thomas Tantrum, The Watson Twins, and James Yorkston. The high-demand 20th Anniversary Transatlanticism and Give Up tour, co-headlined by Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service in celebration of their respective records first released in 2003, has extended into 2024 with a stop at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena on April 29. Death Cab's founding bass guitarist Nick Harmer, who connected from home in Seattle before tour began, shared some of the “real-life time machine” feelings that have come up in rehearsing and performing the band's breakthrough record in its entirety.
You're forgiven if you tried to search for Pollen on the internet and struggled to find this band. Besides the numerous bands named Pollen, there is also the issue of their debut 1998 album The Glorious Couch Life not appearing on streaming services, rendering it hard to find for the average music listener. That's a shame, because throughout the record, Pollen finds the combination of indie rock energy tinged with a little garage and some danceable rhythms, topped with catchy melodies and smart lyrics. Shades of American bands like Superchunk, Guided By Voices, Beck, Death Cab For Cutie, and Sebadoh peak through, as well as Australian contemporaries like Screamfeeder, Ratcat, Ammonia, and Moler, permeate the sound, from the propulsive "Greater Than" and "Sin as Fast as You Can" to the angular "Walruses to Whales" and quirky "Settle the Score on the Dancefloor." Dear Songwriter,Can you relate to the frustration of struggling with your song lyrics, feeling like you're digging deeper and deeper without pulling up anything of interest? Then today's episode is precisely the creative boost you've been looking for. Today I'm focusing on the genius lyrical power of the lead vocalist of the Death Cab for Cutie - Ben Gibbard, and how his vision and approach can guide upcoming songwriters to explore new territories in their creative journeys. From my assessment, Gibbard's magic lies in his deep and thought-provoking lyricism, using effective imagery and metaphors. For the budding songwriter, studying his approach could very well be the lighthouse in the storm, illuminating the path to expressive, meaningful lyrics. Using examples from two of Gibbard's classic hits with Death Cab for Cutie, "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" and "Title and Registration", we delve into the essential tools and techniques of his craft. What You'll Learn in This Episode:How to make use of vivid, storytelling language to progress your second verse beyond the clichésThe power of "showing" rather than "telling" in your lyrics to draw your listeners inCrafting a descriptive, wordy chorus that opens up new layers to your song's storyThe use of clear metaphors based on specific objects to make your lyrics stand out and evoke emotionsReady to grab a pen and pour out your thoughts onto paper? Ok, this is an ironic first for SUNNY SONGS: an emo number about death. WTF? I can't really explain why, when I set about devising a list of songs that make me feel good, this one popped into my head. Maybe it's the unflinching devotion expressed by composer Ben Gibbard. It's calm, simple, stoic, resolute. “When your soul embarks I will follow you into the dark,” he proclaims. No questions, no hesitation. His love is eternal, and conquers the fear of unending night. We'll hold hands, he assures his love. I can remember when I first heard it, riding in the backseat of a car on a roadtrip. It wasn't loud, and took me by surprise, gobsmacking me, and causing me to well up instantaneously. I wanted to know who that singer was, wondering who could have rendered this perfect piece. I had heard about the band from Bellingham, WA, with the unusual name - Death Cab For Cutie, but I had never actually heard them. The name derives, I discovered, from a song title written by the British Bonzo Dog Band humorists, Vivian Stanshall and Neil Innes. Things just got curiouser and curiouser. In the lyric Ben tells us that he was taught in Catholic school that “Fear is the heart of love,” and he is clearly doing his utmost here to countermand that dogma. Recorded solo, on a single mic during a session break, I Will Follow You Into the Dark may have failed to chart on the Billboard Top 100, but it went double platinum, was nominated for a Grammy in 2007, and has been featured in many many tv shows and films, proving that, sometimes, quieter is better.
Ramy Youssef was one of the first and most popular guests on Working It Out back in 2020, and now he's back with updates to some of the same very material he worked out the first time around. Mike and Ramy discuss which Death Cab For Cutie songs make Ramy cry, unfriendly encounters in Jacksonville, the perils of public restroom keys, and Ramy's not-so-secret “secret marriage.” All that and why Ramy wants Mike's next special to be called “The Arab Dad.”Please consider donating to Karam Foundation
September is in full swing and TikTok is as busy as ever. Dena and Catalina open discussing the concerts they recently attended, including a recap video by friend of the pod @ashleyrosayy of the Death Cab For Cutie and Postal Service reunion – Catalina's personal eras tour, and Dena's experience at the Aerosmith concert. Dena also has an important update. Lots to chat about in terms of algorithms this week. Catalina starts off with a story about a bride overcharging her bridesmaids for dresses featured by @aitapod before diving into Army wife drama and @jesstheprequeldoesmiami's reaction video. Dena also shares her side of TikTok this week including @thelexisout claiming to be the Delta Airlines pooper and MLM reaction videos like the masterful work of @canadiankels2.0 and @mallorysthoughts. A recent audio/filter trend is set to an Ashanti song with creators like @crazyauntchronicles, @idk.its.jess and @olanprenatt_is.sexy joining in. Next up, they highlight featured content creator of the week @Boobieklapper before moving on to the latest celebrity drama covered on the platform by @bekahdayyy. The food and drink section is as unhinged as usual, with Dena mostly featuring videos about Portugal (@theatrewithselena, @kris10peterson) and a debate about reselling pastries from Costco. To wrap up, Catalina discusses what she learned about bees thanks to @mr.mrs.beerescue and the ladies chat about how often they think about the Roman Empire (@theyaresam_). Check out all the videos we mention and more on our blog (2old4tiktok.com), Instagram (@2old4tiktokpod), and TikTok (@2old4tiktok_podcast).
The friendly creative rivalry between the Beatles and the Beach Boys arguably hit it's peak in 1966 when the bands released two albums that routinely top "best album ever" lists, the Beatles' Revolver and the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds. Lennon and McCartney had been inspiring Beach Boys mastermind Brian Wilson to up his songwriting, and vice versa. On Revolver, this influence shines through in the harmony-laden "Here, There, and Everywhere," a song Paul managed to scribble together while waiting for John to wake up for a songwriting session. Not a bad way to kill some time. It's an absolutely gorgeous song that, honestly, I'm not sure why in the hell I have it ranked at #111. I must've been in a weird mood the day I did this ranking, or maybe I was halfway through a bottle wine (I did make this list during quarantine afterall), but this song is just beautiful. Between the melody and the 3 part harmony, I pick up real mid 60s Brian Wilson vibes here (not surf era, more the Summer Days.../Pet Sounds era), and it makes me think that while "Here, There, and Everywhere" has a really basic backing track, I wonder if it might have benefited from a more intricate style Brian Wilson production? To chew on my latest ranking abomination, we're happy to welcome back Death Cab for Cutie guitarist Dave Depper! Since we last chatted with Dave, his band has released the fantastic album Asphalt Meadows, as well as an acoustic version of the album, and he's released a solo album which is an entire cover of the Air album Moon Safari. Busy fella! Dave calls this song "the most beautiful song ever recorded by anyone," but in shocking news, Julia's not quite feeling it! We chat with Dave about creative spontaneity, remixes, Paul's stunning dexterity as a singer, God-level songwriting, and one of the best stories about meeting a Beach Boy (not that one, and probably not the other one you're thinking of either). Check out Dave on tour with Death Cab for Cutie and the Postal Service this fall (if you can snag a ticket), and head to davedepper.com or deathcabforcutie.com to pick up his tunes and DCFC's, or anywhere you choose to listen to/buy music. Death Cab for Cutie emerged from the Pacific Northwest in the late 90's and came to embody the indie sound of the mid aughts, rising to fame alongside the teenage melodrama they helped soundtrack. Today they are still releasing meaningful music while many of their peers faded away. Author Michael Tedder joins Yasi to trace their path from early years to the present. Dave Hill is many things. He's a musician, an actor, a podcast host, and an author. So four things. But it's five things if you count his role as hockey sweater collector. Dave has a lifelong obsession with the hockey sweater, or jersey as one might call it in the States, and he recounts many of his favorites in this dreamily unfocused conversation that also includes discussions of Norway, Pantera, ice hockey legend Len Frig, duvets, and how to start a bar with the government's assistance after being stabbed.Dave's book: The Awesome Game: One Man's Incredible, Globe-Crushing Hockey OdysseyMentioned in the ShowKniven BarLen FrigSudbury WolvesTampereen IlvesHey Sleepy Heads, is there anyone whose voice you'd like to drift off to, or do you have suggestions on things we could do to aid your slumber? In this special episode, Rachel and Melinda learn all about what music supervision entails from the super fun to not-so-sexy but needed tasks. In September, Ben Gibbard, the founder of Death Cab For Cutie, will set out on a nationwide tour to celebrate the two very different albums that have come to define his career. Both albums came out in 2003. The first was called Give Up, and it was a collaboration with his friend and producer Jimmy Tamborello. They'd made it while Gibbard was taking a break from the relentless cycle of touring and releasing music with Death Cab. They called their new band The Postal Service. Give Up steadily built momentum, found critical acclaim, and eventually became Gibbard's first platinum selling record. Musically, the Postal Service incorporated various synth and new wave-inspired elements behind Gibbard's confessional songwriting style, which set a precedent for many of the indie releases over the following decade. Later that same year, Gibbard went back to his band roots and released Death Cab For Cuties' breakthrough album, Transatlanticism. This fall Gibbard and his band will play both Transatlanticism and Give Up in their entirety. And today we'll hear him play three acoustic renditions of his classic songs. On today's episode Justin Richmond talks to Ben Gibbard about the conditions that led to the most successful year of his career. Gibbard also gets candid about the woman who inspired multiple songs on Transatlanticism, including the brutally honest, “Tiny Vessels.” You can hear a playlist of some of our favorite Ben Gibbard songs HERE.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
If there is one thing that we love here at Indiecast, it is festival posters with absolutely chaotic energy. So Steven and Ian were psyched this week to see the lineup for Riot Fest in Chicago, which is topped by big-time bands like Foo Fighters, Death Cab For Cutie and Queens Of The Stone Age. But the real action takes place further down the list — where else can you see Ani DiFranco, Mr. Bungle and Insane Clown Posse in the same place? Also, apparently Corey Feldman is also appearing at this festival? Simply incredible. (:27)From there, Steven asks Ian about the state of music in 2023. Specifically, is this a weak year for consensus album of the year candidates? Caroline Polachek and Boygenius are early contenders, and there are artists on the horizon (PJ Harvey, Rihanna, Jenny Lewis) who might contend. But this year feels like we might be at the end of something. What is it, though? (11:08)After that, there's a discussion about the legacy of The Cure, who are back on the road this month (24:15). (Steven also wrote about them this week.) Why is this band so central to the history of modern indie and alternative rock? What is their best work, and where should a newbie get started? In Recommendation Corner (1:00:07), Ian talks up the British post-punk band Mandy, Indiana, while Steven stumps for two other British acts, the soft-rock singer-songwriter Westerman and the art-rock combo Bar Italia.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Urban legends for Halloween? YOU BETCHA! Alaina brings us an urban legend straight out of the Louisiana Bayou- she really can't get enough of that place, eh? Le Feu Follet is a really pretty set of words, but don't you go following them into the dark. Even if you are listening to Death Cab For Cutie. And while we're on this path of warning you about things you should and shouldn't do, let me tell ya don't mess with Queen Hannah Cranna. She's not noble, but she is a witch and she will fuck with your ability to make a good pie.
