What's the episode about? In this episode, hear Todd Meyers on grief, anthropology, entanglements, addiction, language, overdose death, opioid crisis, life's incoherence and knowing your limits Who is Todd? Todd began his career as a painter, earning a BFA in studio from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.  His interests slowly moved to the history of medicine, public health, and anthropology, earning a PhD in anthropology from the Johns Hopkins University.    Todd began teaching in the Department of Social Studies of Medicine at McGill University in 2020, after previous appointments at New York University–Shanghai (2015-2020) and Wayne State University in Detroit (2009-2015).  He is currently Professor and Marjorie Bronfman Chair in Social Studies of Medicine at McGill. In addition to his current book, Gone Gone (2025), Todd is the author and co-author of several other books, including All That Was Not Her (2022), which follows the life and death of a woman in Baltimore spanning twenty years, and The Human Body in the Age Catastrophe (2018, written with Stefanos Geroulanos), on the history of integration and disintegration in the study of human physiology at the beginning of the twentieth century.  Todd's current work is an ethnography of hate related violence and legal psychiatry told through the murder of a gay man over thirty years ago.   How do I cite the episode in my research and reading lists? The book stresses how death is not only a biological process or event but rather shaped by a range of intersecting factors. Beitske Visser is a professional racing driver from the Netherlands. She is best known for her versatility across multiple racing disciplines, including single-seaters, touring cars, and endurance racing. Visser began her motorsport career in karting before transitioning to open-wheel racing, where she competed in the Formula BMW Talent Cup and ADAC Formel Masters, achieving multiple race wins and podiums. In 2019, Visser gained international recognition as a front-runner in the W Series, a single-seater championship exclusively for women. She finished as the championship runner-up in its inaugural season, solidifying her status as one of the top female racers in the world. Her consistency and speed in the series earned her a reputation for being a tough competitor. Beyond the W Series, Visser has also competed in endurance racing, including the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) and the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. Indigenous knowledge of local ecosystems often challenges settler-colonial cosmologies that naturalize resource extraction and the relocation of nomadic, hunting, foraging, or fishing peoples. Questioning Borders: Ecoliteratures of China and Taiwan (Columbia UP, 2023) explores recent ecoliterature by Han and non-Han Indigenous writers of China and Taiwan, analyzing relations among humans, animals, ecosystems, and the cosmos in search of alternative possibilities for creativity and consciousness. Informed by extensive field research, Robin Visser compares literary works by Bai, Bunun, Kazakh, Mongol, Tao, Tibetan, Uyghur, Wa, Yi, and Han Chinese writers set in Xinjiang, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, Southwest China, and Taiwan, sites of extensive development, migration, and climate change impacts. Visser contrasts the dominant Han Chinese cosmology of center and periphery that informs what she calls “Beijing Westerns” with Indigenous and hybridized ways of relating to the world that challenge borders, binaries, and hierarchies.
