Starting with Ronald Reagan in 1981, every Republican president at some point has made tax cuts a centerpiece of his economic agenda, often with scant evidence that these policies have produced economic benefits that touch all Americans. Delving into some of the more notable moments in this history offers a roadmap to this inequality. How did a tax designed to discourage multigenerational inherited wealth come to be known as the "death tax?" Why are qualified dividends—which most taxpayers see as a single line on their 1040s—an outsized benefit for high income individuals? How did generous incentives help to reshore income held abroad? On this episode of Talking Tax, James B. Steele, a two-time Pulitzer Prize journalist who has covered economic inequality for decades, sat down with Bloomberg Law editor Bernie Kohn to talk about his story co-written for the Center for Public Integrity and Bloomberg Tax showing how US tax policies have consistently fueled inequality. This podcast is a partnership between the Center for Public Integrity, a newsroom that investigates inequality, and Bloomberg Tax. Do you have feedback on this episode of Talking Tax? American Economic Inequality at Record Levels Fairer Tax System, Better Health Care Can Restore the Middle Class January 31, 2021 – The gap between the rich and poor in America is at levels not seen in more than a century as the nation wrestles -- both politically and economically -- over the question of public welfare versus private gain, a legendary investigative reporter said Sunday. James B. Steele told the Retail Politics Podcast with Gerry Shields that tax breaks to the rich over the last 40 years have cut their individual contributions to the federal government in half while corporate tax rates have fallen 30 percent. Those rates must be restored if the gap between the haves and have nots is to be closed, said Steele, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner who along with his reporting partner, Don Barlett, wrote the seminal book, America, What Went Wrong? “What makes America great is certainly capitalism but also the fact that we have the kind of economy that could eventually benefit everybody,” Steele said. The shift from a factory driven economy to the retail sector has caused wages for the middle class to plummet, Steele said, with the minimum wage not being raised since 2009. The American economy has shifted to being driven by business and the markets away from government direction to ensure all Americans benefit, he said. A giant crippler to the economy is the cost of health care with 20 million Americans still without the ability to affordably pay for their illnesses, much of which was once paid by employers, Steele said. Four in 10 Americans, if required due to a health emergency, could not raise $400, he said. # # #Listen to the Jim Steele Retail Politics Podcast with Gerry Shields interview on Apple, Spotify, and retailpoliticspodcast.com

According to two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter James B. Steele, the downward spiral of America’s middle class is no accident. In “America: What Went Wrong?: The Crisis Deepens,” he and longtime colleague Donald L. Barlett describe in vivid detail how Washington and Wall Street have made decisions that enrich the wealthy at the expense of everyone else. An expanded edition of their 1991 bestseller “America: What Went Wrong?,” book now includes a look at how the latest government policies are launching a fresh assault on the average American. Join us for a look at political and corporate America run amok with one of the best-qualified sources on the subject in this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large on WBAI.

Investigations today are full of data, documents and computer programming, but that wasn’t always the case. On this bonus episode, we’re sharing audio from the 2019 CAR Conference. Data journalism pioneer James B. Steele discusses his work with longtime reporting partner Donald L. Barlett. He also offers tips for finding stories and staying curious. A recent column by Democracy Now host Amy Goodman cites a study by Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting that found that in the week before Obama’s health-care summit, of the hundreds of stories that appeared in major newspapers and on the networks, “only five included the views of advocates of single-payer—none of which appeared on television.” Most opinion columns that mentioned single-payer were written by opponents. I thought it might be a good time to reach into the archives and give another listen to a December, 2004, conversation with Pulitzer Prize winner James B. Steele. Jim Steele was co-author, with Donald L. Barlett, of Critical Condition, How Health Care in America Became Big Business & Bad Medicine. Even after four-plus years, the diagnosis of the problem as laid out in the book holds up. After that, Part V of Eyewitness to the Revolution, Hugo Hakk's account of the February, 1917 Russian Revolution breaking out in Petrograd, just translated this month by his daughter Liia Hakk.
