Since 2016, his reporting has focused on the personal finances of Donald J. Trump, including in-depth articles with Susanne Craig and other Times reporters that revealed the fortune Trump inherited from his father and the record of business failures hidden in twenty years of Trump's tax returns. Those articles were awarded a Pulitzer Prize and two George Polk awards. Buettner, who joined the Times in 2006, was also a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in 2012 for articles with Danny Hakim highlighting abuse and neglect in New York's care of developmentally disabled people. He previously worked on investigations teams at the Daily News in New York and New York Newsday. Susanne Craig is an investigative reporter at the New York Times. Since 2016, her reporting has focused on the personal finances of Donald J. Trump, including in-depth articles that revealed the fortune Trump inherited from his father and the record of business failures hidden in twenty years of Trump's tax returns. Those articles were awarded a Pulitzer Prize and two George Polk awards. Craig previously covered Wall Street and served as Albany bureau chief for the Times. Prior to joining the Times in 2010, Craig was a reporter at The Wall Street Journal and The Globe and Mail, Canada's national newspaper. She is a member of the Order of Canada and serves as an on-air analyst for MSNBC.   From the Pulitzer Prize-winning reporters behind the 2018 bombshell New York Times exposé of then-President Trump's finances, an explosive investigation into the history of Donald Trump's wealth, revealing how one of the country's biggest business failures lied his way into the White House Soon after announcing his first campaign for the US presidency, Donald J. Trump told a national television audience that life “has not been easy for me. It has not been easy for me.” Building on a narrative he had been telling for decades, he spun a hardscrabble fable of how he parlayed a small loan from his father into a multi-billion-dollar business and real estate empire. This feat, he argued, made him singularly qualified to lead the country. Except: None of it was true. Born to a rich father who made him the beneficiary of his own highly lucrative investments, Trump received the equivalent of more than $500 million today via means that required no business expertise whatsoever. Drawing on over twenty years' worth of Trump's confidential tax information, including the tax returns he tried to conceal, alongside business records and interviews with Trump insiders, New York Times investigative reporters Russ Buettner and Susanne Craig track Trump's financial rise and fall, and rise and fall again. For decades, he squanders his fortunes on money losing businesses, only to be saved yet again by financial serendipity. He tacks his name above the door of every building, while taking out huge loans he'll never repay. He obsesses over appearances, while ignoring threats to the bottom line and mounting costly lawsuits against city officials. He tarnishes the value of his name by allowing anyone with a big enough check to use it, and cheats the television producer who not only rescues him from bankruptcy but casts him as a business savant – the public image that will carry him to the White House.  A masterpiece of narrative reporting, Lucky Loser is a meticulous examination spanning nearly a century, filled with scoops from Trump Tower, Mar-a-Lago, Atlantic City, and the set of The Apprentice. At a moment when Trump's tether to success and power is more precarious than ever, here for the first time is the definitive true accounting of Trump and his money – what he had, what he lost, and what he has left – and the final word on the myth of Trump, the self-made billionaire. He writes for The New Yorker and other publications, and is host emeritus of the Slate podcast How To! He's the author of Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection*. We all know that we can't lead if we don't connect. The best leaders not do this well, but they do it consistently with all kinds of people. In this conversation, Charles and I discuss what we can learn from the best communicators to get better ourselves. Key Points Neural entrainment is when we click with someone and can finish each other's sentences (and even our biological responses align). Supercommunicators trigger this consistently across many kinds of relationships. Supercommunicators aren't always loudest or leading the conversation, but they ask more questions and adapt better in the moment. Make emotional replies easier for others. Instead of, “Do you have any hobbies?” ask, “If you could learn anything, what would it be?” Reciprocation of emotion is key for people to connect well. When another party is sharing something joyful, that's an opportunity to share yourself. When something is more contentious, loop for understanding by (1) asking a deeper question, (2) repeating back in your own words, and (3) asking if you got it right. Ralph welcomes Bishop William Barber from the Poor People's Campaign to discuss their March 2nd mass moral march on State Assemblies and their efforts to mobilize millions of poor and low-wage voters. Then, Ralph is joined by Washington Post health reporter Dan Diamond to discuss his team's recent report on a $2 billion Medicare fraud scheme. Bishop William Barber is President and Senior Lecturer of Repairers of the Breach, which was established to train communities in moral movement building. He is Co-chair of the Poor People's Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, and Founding Director and Professor at the Center for Public Theology and Public Policy at Yale Divinity School. The biggest mistake people who are not poor can make is [thinking] that helping poor and low-wage people in this country doesn't improve their life. Total nonsense. And we're going to see how a greater turnout of poor and low-wage people in the elections can transform politics in this country at the national, state, and local level.Ralph NaderYou cannot, in a democracy, let your power sit on the shelf. If folk are not recognizing that, you must force them. And we now have this power— we don't even know what battleground states are. Because if poor and low-wealth people voted at the same percentage rate as middle class and others, it would change all of the political calculations. And it is the fear of the greedy aristocracy. It is time for us to realize their fear.Bishop William BarberBad policy is mean, it is violent, and it is deadly. Because now we live in a reality… [where] poverty is the fourth-leading cause of death in this country. If you are not for ending policies that perpetuate poverty and low wages, then you are an accessory to the crime of human beings' lives being takenBishop William BarberDan Diamond is a national health reporter for The Washington Post, focused on accountability, federal agencies and public health. He joined the Post in 2021 after covering the Trump administration for Politico, where he won a George Polk award for investigating political interference in the pandemic response. One would think that somewhere at Medicare, there was the alert that this was a scheme to be looking out for. On the state level, several states began last year to issue warnings—the state of Hawaii, the state of Oklahoma, among others—saying, “Watch out, Medicare beneficiaries, for these catheter-fraud schemes.” So that was nine months ago at this point. Medicare itself—nationally—were not aware of any similar warnings or action, at least publicly. Again, they may have been doing things behind the scenes. They may have been wanting to bait the trap for these potential fraudsters, and maybe that's why they didn't say anything. But still it raises real questions—why they have waited so long to do anything, and why it takes news coverage in February 2024 to put a spotlight on something that's been going on for eighteen months.Dan DiamondIn Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeSantisNews 2/28/241. The Michigan primary was held on Tuesday. On the Republican side, Donald Trump cruised to victory over Nikki Haley, but on the Democratic side, all eyes were focused not on the candidates themselves but on the “Uncommitted,” ballot line. In recent days, activists and prominent progressive elected officials urged voters to register their opposition to President Biden's support for Israel's ongoing genocide in Gaza by voting Uncommitted. The campaign set a goal of 10,000 Uncommitted votes; according to the New York Times they won over 100,000. The success of this protest vote movement in a key swing state should be setting off major alarm bells within the Biden campaign and hopefully will force the president to reckon with dissent to his Gaza policy from within his party.2. On Sunday, U.S. Airman Aaron Bushnell self immolated in front of the Israeli Embassy in Washington, registering the ultimate protest against the ongoing slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza. Just before igniting himself, Mr. Bushnell shouted “Free Palestine,” yet that did not stop mainstream outlets like the New York Times and NPR from obfuscating the motives of his sacrifice, with their coverage featuring lines like “NPR was not able to independently verify the man's motives.” As Ryan Grim of the Intercept put it, “what more could he have done to make a point NPR would hear.” Rest in Power, Aaron Bushnell.3. A new Institute for Social Policy and Understanding or ISPU poll, conducted between December 2023 and January 2024, found that majorities of all religious groups favor a ceasefire in Gaza. Support for a ceasefire is strongest among Muslim and Catholic Americans, with both groups reporting over 70% support. Support is weakest among Jewish Americans, yet 50% still favor a ceasefire, with only 34% opposed. In other words, President Biden giving a blank check to Israel is alienating Americans of all religious persuasions, including American Jews.4. Signaling another troubling omen for Biden, a new poll of Black voters in Michigan, conducted by Howard University, shows the president's support among African-Americans has dropped from 94% in 2020 to just 49% today. This is coupled with a tripling of support for Donald Trump, who now attracts 26% of Black voters.5. On February 22nd, Representatives Jerry Nadler, Jamie Raskin, Dan Goldman, and 10 more Jewish members of Congress took the first step toward calling for a ceasefire, sending a letter urging the Biden Administration to “Facilitate [a] ceasefire in Gaza.” Many of these liberal members, including Nadler, Goldman, Raskin, and Becca Balint of Vermont have been the subjects of pressure campaigns by pro-Palestine activists to push them toward support for a ceasefire. Contrary to the headline however, this letter only calls for a temporary pause of hostilities.6. Democracy Now! reports “Ireland's senate unanimously voted last week to impose sanctions against Israel, prevent the passage of U.S. weapons to Israel via Irish airspace and advocate for an international arms embargo against Israel.” Ireland has been among the most vocal countries condemning the Israeli campaign of terror in Gaza, particularly in Europe. Irish Senator Frances Black is quoted in this piece saying “I remember one woman…she said that she was…from a human rights organization…And she said, 'Why have the international community abandoned us?' And those words stay with me.”7. Lauren Kaori Gurley, who covers Labor for the Washington Post, reports that last week baristas at 21 Starbucks stores around the country filed for union elections. This is “the largest single-day filing since the campaign's launch in 2021.”  The location of these stores ranges from Brooklyn and Chicago to Grand Forks, North Dakota and Sulfur, Louisiana – demonstrating the popularity of unions throughout the nation. Starbucks has now agreed to recognize the union and work with their employees to forge a master contract.8. In more labor news, the United Auto Workers union has announced they are allocating a stunning $40 million for new organizing through 2026. By contrast, the AFL-CIO pledged only $11 million annually for new organizing in 2022. UAW Region 9A leader Brandon Mancilla adds that “The UAW will provide material support to Mexican autoworker organizing and their independent union reform movement. We need to end the international race to the bottom. The Mexican working class is our ally, not our enemy.” And Luis Feliz Leon of Labor Notes reports that “Workers at Mercedes-Benz's largest plant in the U.S. announced that a majority of their co-workers have signed union cards in support of joining the @UAW. Workers at Mercedes Benz's Alabama plant launched their organizing committee 60 days ago.”9. In a major loss for local journalism, WAMU – Washington DC's NPR member station, run out of American University – has shuttered it's flagship publication, DCist. Per Washingtonian magazine, “DCist was originally owned by the company Gothamist. Joe Ricketts, the billionaire who bought it in 2017, shut down the site that same year after employees voted to unionize…The next year, two anonymous donations allowed WAMU to buy DCist.” The University said in a statement that this move represents “a new strategy to deepen engagement with Washingtonians…centered around audio and live experiences.”10. Finally, St. Louis Public Radio reports that local Girl Scouts Troop 149 “decided to raise money for the humanitarian nonprofit Palestine Children's Relief Fund…inspired by other Girl Scouts troops that raised money for war victims in Ukraine.” Yet, instead of backing this effort, the  Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri responded with a legal threat, writing “Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri and Girl Scouts of the United States have no other choice than to engage our legal counsel to help remedy this situation and to protect the intellectual property and other rights of the organization.” Discouraged, the troop leaders opted to disband the troop. The national organization later apologized for their threat of legal action, but the troop leadership intend to remain disaffiliated from the group, and instead function as an independent troop. So far, they have raised over $10,000 for the PCRF.This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. Golden is a Boston-based senior editor and reporter at ProPublica.  He has been instrumental in three Pulitzer Prizes, two as an editor and one as a reporter.  He co-edited a ProPublica series on Latin American asylum-seekers caught between the U.S. government and the MS-13 gang, which won the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for feature writing.  Before joining ProPublica, he worked as managing editor for education and enterprise at Bloomberg News.  There he edited a series about tax inversions—companies moving headquarters overseas to avoid taxes—that earned Bloomberg's only Pulitzer Prize in 2015.  Golden won a Pulitzer as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal in 2004 for a series of articles on preferences for children and donors in college admissions. He expanded that series into a critically acclaimed national bestseller, “The Price of Admission: How America's Ruling Class Buys Its Way Into Elite Colleges—and Who Gets Left Outside the Gates.” An updated edition was published in October 2019 with new reporting on the Operation Varsity Blues scandal.  He is co-author of “Spy Schools: How The CIA, FBI, and Foreign Intelligence Secretly Exploit America's Universities,” with Renee Dudley.  Golden spent 17 years as a staff reporter at the Boston Globe, including a stint on its Spotlight team, and served as senior editor for investigations at Conde Nast Portfolio.  He has won three George Polk awards, three National Headliner awards, the Sigma Delta Chi award, the Gerald Loeb Award, among others.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On the 75th anniversary of the murder, White House correspondent Steven Portnoy begins the network's first dive into the case in decades. Polk was in Greece to cover that country's civil war, a battle that pitted forces backed by Washington against communist guerrillas aligned with Moscow. He had criticized the right-wing authorities now charged with finding his killer. Shocked by Polk's murder, prominent journalists ask the father of the U.S. intelligence community to oversee the investigation. Gen. William “Wild Bill” Donovan identifies a suspect.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees the right to free speech. The Second Amendment guarantees the right to bear arms. Mike McIntire documents what happens when those two rights clash and the chilling effect open-carry laws are having on protest and public assembly across the United States.    McIntire is an investigative reporter, author, and editor. In 2003 he joined the New York Times, serving in the New York City Hall bureau before transferring to the investigations unit in 2007. Before that, he was the investigative editor at The Hartford Courant, where he shared a Pulitzer Prize for breaking news reporting and was a Pulitzer finalist for his investigative reporting on medical malpractice. Covering topics such as presidential campaigns, political corruption, New York City Hall, and international terrorism. McIntire has made a name for himself as a fearless investigative reporter, who reports on important issues which affect the lives of his readers. His book, “Champions Way: Football, Florida and the Lost Soul of College Sports,” was published in 2017, focusing on his investigation of college sports corruption, which earned him the role of finalist for the 2015 Pulitzer Prize. He went on to share the Pulitzer Prize in both 2017 for reporting on Russia's hidden interference with the U.S. presidential election and in 2022 for reporting on disclosed financial incentives with police traffic stops. McIntire also earned George Polk, Daniel Pearl and Scripps-Howard awards for obtaining and publishing Donald Trump's long-concealed tax returns alongside his team in 2020. What makes people migrate? How does climate change drive mass migration in today's world? How serious is this problem? How serious will it become in the future? To answer these questions, Pedro Pinto interviews Abrahm Lustgarten in this episode of “It's Not That Simple”, a podcast by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation. An author and investigative reporter, Abrahm Lustgarten's work for ProPublica and The New York Times Magazine has been focused on climate change and our response to a rapidly changing environment. His recent investigations include a three-part series on global climate migration, an examination of the global palm oil trade, the climate drivers behind pandemics, and how climate change is driving global water scarcity. His 2015 series examining the causes of water scarcity in the American West, “Killing the Colorado,” was a finalist for the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for national reporting and received the top honor from the National Academy of Sciences. His earlier investigation into the environmental and economic consequences of fracking received the George Polk award for environmental reporting, the National Press Foundation award for best energy writing, a Sigma Delta Chi award and was honored as finalist for the Goldsmith Prize. He is also a 2022 Emerson Collective Fellow at New America, and a recipient of grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to supporting his forthcoming book about climate-driven migration. He teaches a course on narrative writing about climate change at the University of California, Berkeley. In this episode, Lustgarten discusses how climate change can impact social issues which in turn can impact political circumstances and drive to mass migration events. He looks at the growing number of areas of the planet that are or are likely to become uninhabitable and considers the political impact of being a destination of mass migration. He also examines why climate change is something that can be hard for people to fully understand or accept. Finally, he discusses what we can and have to do to mitigate climate change and its consequences, in a conversation well worth listening to.              More on this topic• China's Great Train: Beijing's Drive West and the Campaign to Remake Tibet, Abrahm Lustgarten, 2008• Run to Failure: BP and the Making of the Deepwater Horizon Disaster, Abrahm Lustgarten, 2012• Abrahm Lustgarten's award-winning story on “The Water Crisis in the West”https://www.propublica.org/series/killing-the-colorado• Abrahm Lustgarten's ProPublica storieshttps://www.propublica.org/people/abrahm-lustgarten • A series of stories by Abrahm Lustgarten published in The New York Times Magazinehttps://www.newamerica.org/our-people/abrahm-lustgarten/• Abrahm Lustgarten on “The Great Climate Migration”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ6QoCDcEzg• Abrahm Lustgarten on how “The Great Climate Migration Has Begun”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvaI9nxSKAw• Podcast It's Not That Simple “Climate Change”, with Bill McKibbenhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDIIzdst6Fo Other references in Portuguese• Essay of the Foundation “Alterações Climáticas” by Filipe Duarte Santoshttps://www.ffms.pt/publicacoes/detalhe/5409/alteracoes-climaticas• Essay of the Foundation “Riscos Globais e Biodiversidade” by Maria Amélia Martins-Louçãohttps://www.ffms.pt/publicacoes/detalhe/5682/riscos-globais-e-biodiversidade• Podcast [IN] Pertinente “Alterações Climáticas: Ainda vamos a tempo?” with Johan Rockströmhttps://www.ffms.pt/conferencias/detalhe/5799/alteracoes-climaticas-ainda-vamos-a-tempo-uma-entrevista-a-johan-rockstrom• Podcast Da Capa à Contracapa “Como responder aos desafios das alterações climáticas?” with  Filipe Duarte Santos

All of us construct models of the world, and update them on the basis of evidence brought to us by our senses. Scientists try to be more rigorous about it, but we all do it. It's natural that this process will depend on what form that sensory input takes. We know that animals, for example, are typically better or worse than humans at sight, hearing, and so on. And as Ed Yong points out in his new book, it goes far beyond that, as many animals use completely different sensory modalities, from echolocation to direct sensing of electric fields. Why advocacy? Felicia Morton has dedicated her career to bringing people and ideas together to raise awareness for primary immune deficiencies.  When her son, Sebastian, was diagnosed with Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD)  in 2012, she found it difficult to find reliable information,  medical professionals, opportunities for patients to connect, especially while her son was in and out of the hospital with infections.  She was determined to use her skills to bring resources together and make it available to others in similar crisis. To that end, Felicia became: Founder and Executive Director of the CGD Association of America (CGDAA), a Sec.501c3 organization, whose mission is to advocate on behalf of patients, carriers, and families in the CGD community by providing clear, accurate, and independent news and information about CGD and advancing CGD research.  Was named as Patient Advocate Liaison for CGD for the Primary Immune Deficiency Treatment Consortium (PIDTC),  funded by the National Institutes of Health, which consists of 43 centers in North America whose shared goal is to improve the outcome of patients with rare, life threatening, inherited disorders of the immune system CGDAA listed below as a resource: https://www.rarediseasesnetwork.org/cms/pidtc/Get-Involved/Patient-Advocacy https://rarediseases.info.nih.gov/diseases/6100/chronic-granulomatous-disease Was named as CGD Patient Organization for the National Institutes of Health National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences - GARD Genetic and Rare Diseases Information Center CGDAA listed below as a resource Listed with NORD, National Organization of Rare Disorders CGDAA affiliated organizations: Primary Immune Deficiency Consortium https://www.rarediseasesnetwork.org/cms/pidtc/ Contact: Dr. Jennifer Puck UCSF Dept of Pediatrics Allergy Immunology and, and Blood and Marrow Transplant  NORD (National Organization for Rare Disorders) Contact: Debbie Drell, Allie Crafton, Ashanthi DeSilva https://rarediseases.org/organizations/the-cgd-association-of-america/ Remember the Girls Contact: Taylor Kane, Executive Director https://www.rememberthegirls.org/ Jeffrey Modell Foundation Contact: Fred & Vicki Modell http://www.info4pi.org/wjmf/breaking-news CGD Society, United Kingdom Contact: Claire Jeffries, Operations Manager https://cgdsociety.org/ Global Genes Felicia Morton Nominated as Global Genes Rare Champion of Hope in 2020: https://globalgenes.org/rare-champion-of-hope-award-nominees/ Immune Deficiency Foundation Contact: John Boyle, President & CEO  Affiliated via PIDTC and RDCRN https://www.rarediseasesnetwork.org/cms/pidtc/Get-Involved/Patient-Advocacy https://www.rarediseasesnetwork.org/pags Named to IDF’s PI Connect Governance Committee https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/immune-deficiency-foundation-welcomes-additional-patients-and-caregivers-to-pi-connect-governance-committee-300077065.html Why innovation for the patient population? In addition to providing a central clearinghouse of information for CGD patients, families and physicians, this work is innovative because the CGDAA will soon start an IRB approved Principal Investigator driven study using the database of carriers that Felicia created to study the symptoms and diseases experienced by X linked female CGD carriers.  It has only recently been discovered that X linked carriers, long thought to be asymptomatic, actually experience medical problems linked to their genetic status.  This research may lead to earlier diagnosis of treatable illness. How does candidate inspire others? Felicia inspires, educates and supports in diverse ways including: 1. Be The Match stem cell donor drives.   Stem cell transplant is a curative option for patients with CGD, however, many patients lack a suitable donor because of ethnic diversity.  Felicia's Finnish background mixed with her husband's Costa Rican background made finding a donor for her son difficult.  She organized others to run stem cell donor drives to sign people to the Be the Match Registry to increase the available pool of donors, including drives at the NIH and Georgetown University.  2. Presenter at Conferences Felicia has represented the CGD community by speaking at the Rare Diseases Clinical Research Network (RDCRN) conference.  She also spoke at the Rare Disease Awareness Day sponsored by Orchard Therapeutics.  3. E-newsletter and blog Felicia writes the CGDAA  e-blog and newsletter that is sent electronically to the community. 4. CDGAA Mentoring Network of Volunteers Felicia recruits, trains and mentors the volunteers who in turn mentor families. 5. Family support Perhaps, most importantly, Felicia is always directly available to speak with, and reassure, patients, parents, caregivers and carriers affected by the CGD mutation. She inspires and empowers families to take an active role in getting quality care for their family members. What challenges have they overcome? Starting a not-for-profit from scratch with no funding is a daunting challenge.  Felicia completed an arduous and extensive application to the Pro Bono Clearing House Organization in the hope of being chosen and matched with a law firm to help her set up a 501c3 organization.  Her application was deemed 'compelling' and in 2019 she successfully matched, and after many months, succeeded in achieving 501c3 status.  The next challenge was to bring together medical experts to join the team as advisors.  Harry Malech, MD, Chief, Genetic Immunotherapy Section, Deputy Chief, Laboratory of Clinical Immunology and Microbiology, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, National Institute of Health volunteered to lead the CGDAA Advisory Board and recruit other top CGD physician specialists in the US.   Other member of her board include: Kathleen Sullivan, MD, PhD, Chief of the Division of Allergy and Immunology, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Jennifer Leiding, MD, Immunologist and Allergy Specialist, Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Rebecca Marsh, MD, Clinical Director, Primary Immune Deficiency Program and Co-Director, Diagnostic Immunology Laboratories, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital  Mary Dinauer, MD, PhD, Fred M. Saigh Distinguished Chair of Pediatric Research, Professor of Pediatrics, Washington University School of Medicine - St. Louis Children’s Hospital  Fundraising is another challenge that is ongoing, however, two large pharmaceutical companies have already supported the new organization. Finally, and most personally, Felicia worked as a CGD advocate, which formed the building blocks of the CGDAA, while seeing her son through multiple hospitalizations for infections until he received a successful stem cell transplant done at a large institution in NC.  She is an X-linked carrier of CGD, the daughter herself of an X-linked mother, a wife and owner of her own PR firm.  Miguel Sancho is an Executive Producer currently showrunning and developing projects with Six West Productions. In light of a recent piece by Der Spiegel, one of the largest news magazine publications, on the legacy of controversial Barrett Brown and the early 21st century "hacktivism" of Anonymous, Barrett Brown returns to Parallax Views for a jam-packed two-hour conversation addressing Barrett's criticisms of the article. Specifically, Barrett takes issue with Alexandra Rojkov, the author behind the piece, using a tweet by Claire Lehmann, founder of the equally controversial Quillette magazine (which has promoted writings related to "race realism" as well as, at one time, the work of Andy Ngo), accusing Brown of "harassing women in tech". Within said tweet Lehmann offered, as evidence, a retweet ofBrown asking for "anyone with information about [Peter] Thiel associate Riva-Melissa Tez" to "please email me". In this conversation, argues that a call to potential sources interested in offering him information on Riva-Melissa Tez stretches the credulity of the term harassment and would require a concrete definition of harassment to be laid out. Additionally, he says, Lehmann's tweet inadvertently gave Brown the information he sought from sources who saw it. From there we begin to delve into the larger failures of the press through a multitude of examples, from the Dallas press's employing a white supremacist radio host who went by the psuedonym Spectre to the recent report by Jared Holt, Angry White Men, Right Wing Watch on Michael J. Thompson, a figure within the conservative movement who moonlighted as the alt right personality "Paul Kersey". Why are these figures allowed to exist within the institutions for so long while Barrett Brown and a whistleblower like Val Broeksmit are smeared for pasts involving drug use? This leads us into a discussion Peter Thiel and his software company Palantir. Brown explains what he sees as the relationship between Thiel and the press. In addition, he argues that there are connections between Thiel and magazines like Quillette as well the infamous hacker Andrew Aurnheimer aka "weev". Moreover, Brown says the the story of Thiel's rise, the advent of the alt right, surveillance, and other issues are interrelated and not yet fully known to the public. In addition, Brown discusses the nature of Thiel's agenda and whether it is, as the mainstream media presents it, libertarian in its nature or rather, as investigative journalists like Corey Pein have alluded to, is connected to "The Dark Enlightenment" of neoreactionary philosopher Nick Land. Moreover, Brown says that Palantir is at the center of much more than normally recognized and that Thiel and his agenda is the most dangerous in the world. At this point Brown delves more deeply into the ideology of this "Dark Enlightenment", the premises it is based on, why it is capable of making an argument in a persuasive fashion, and why it must be opposed. Particularly, he notes that "The Dark Enlightenment" persuades by pointing out, often correctly, the failures of institutions within Democracy currently. Brown, however, says that we must find an alternative to counteract this ideology, which he says will manage to become a strong attractor for those with inherited wealth and spreading out from that point. We wrap up the show with Brown announcing the hiatus of the Pursuance Project and a possible Hollywood collaboration with Alex Winter in the future. Then, for what may be the first time, the life, legacy, and mysterious death of journalist Michael Hastings as well as his relationship to Hastings. Hastings was a journalist who gained much recognition for his work on the Iraq war. After the death of his fiancée, Andrea Pahramovich he wrote a book about her passing and his relationship with her in I Lost My Love in Baghdad: A Modern Love Story. Hastings wrote for both the Rolling Stone and Buzzfeed. During the Obama years Hasting becase very critical of what he saw as a state-sponsored war on journalists. He won the George Polk award for his Rolling Stone profile of Gen. Stanley McChrystal entitled "The Runaway General" Unfortunately, Hastings passed away under controversial circumstances (many alleged conspiracy/foul play) on June 18, 2013. In this portion of the conversation Brown outlines his relationship with the late journalist, their shared concerns, and Hastings' treatment by the media. All that and more on this edition of Parallax Views. David's reporting has earned him some of journalism's most prestigious awards. Among David's most notable assignments: his coverage of Puerto Rico's protests for governor Riccardo Roselló to resign and  Hurricane Maria when it hit the island in October 2017. He spent more time covering Puerto Rico's recovery than any other network news correspondent, traveling to the island countless times, and breaking numerous significant stories. His distinctive, unmatched reporting resulted in government action, and throughout the crisis, he delivered sustained coverage on all platforms -- especially on social media. His coverage of Hurricane Maria earned him the prestigious George Polk award for public service in 2018. The award, as the nominating committee states, places "a premium on investigative work that is original, resourceful, and thought provoking." David also received Radio Television Digital News Association's First Amendment Leadership Award his for significant contribution to the protection of the First Amendment and freedom of the press. At CBS News, David has covered major news stories around the world including the shooting at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida, the terrorist attack at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California, and the devastating earthquake that hit Ecuador in April of 2016 leaving hundreds dead and thousands injured. In the summer of 2017, he covered Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Hurricane Irma in Florida, and Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. David's coverage of important national and international stories is also featured prominently on CBSN, CBS News' 24/7 streaming news service.  Prior to CBS, David covered a wide variety of national breaking news from weather to crime for several news organizations. Previously, he created and reported for "Newsbreaker" at ORA-TV, a social media platform for current events and breaking news and was a contributing correspondent for "Entertainment Tonight," the No. 1 syndicated entertainment newsmagazine in the world. His career began in local news at KLFY-TV as an unpaid "teen reporter" while in high school, in his home state of Louisiana. Upon graduation, KLFY-TV hired him as a full-time reporter. He later became the weekend morning and evening news anchor. During the week he attended college, and graduated from the University of Louisiana, Lafayette in 2005.  You can follow him at @DavidBegnaud.

Show #207 | Guest: John Carreyou | Show Summary: When does a dream factory dream too big? And when everyone wakes up, what’s the damage? The acclaim for Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes went well beyond the borders of tech. Theranos, she said, would revolutionize blood testing, making it simpler, faster, and cheaper. Those claims boosted her onto the covers of Forbes and Fortune magazine; Inc.dubbed her “The Next Steve Jobs”. In 2015, John Carreyrou of the Wall Street Journal pointed out the gulf between the company’s promises and its actual results. Scrutiny by the SEC, FDA, and other federal and state agencies led to fraud allegations; lab work was suspended and lawsuits filed. When the dust settled, the big question remained: how did a framework of fantasy with so little substance hoodwink investors and the public? How does what we want to believe play out in the world of real money and real science? And if this is all a cautionary tale, what cautions does it leave us with? Carreyrou’s reporting on Theranos netted him a George Polk award. The book Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup is being filmed with Jennifer Lawrence in the starring role.

In this episode of Law Technology Now, host Monica Bay speaks with reporter and author Charles Duhigg about his new book, “Smarter Faster Better: The Secrets of Being Productive in Life and Business.” Charles emphasizes that a lawyer’s career is predicated upon making choices about how they spend their time and for that reason efficiency is incredibly important. The most productive people, he reveals, are the ones who create routines that allow them to differentiate between busyness and productivity. He encourages leaders to create mental models or visualizations of how any daily transaction will unfold and to make small directed company improvements, or changes to what he calls keystone habits. He continues by providing examples of how this approach, combined with carefully phrasing your proposed change, can lead to greater companywide advancements in the long term. Charles also discusses the importance of having an agile company and explains that the best way to create this culture is to empower your co-workers to make great choices. He states that empowering others to solve problems as they occur allows those individuals who can solve the problem best and who are often the closest to the issue the ability to handle these concerns as they occur. Charles closes the interview with an analysis of how crisis facilitates flexibility and provides tips on how attorneys can create the perception of potential crisis to help facilitate change. Charles Duhigg is a Pulitzer Prize–winning investigative reporter for “The New York Times” and the author of “The Power of Habit.” He is a winner of the National Academies of Sciences, National Journalism, and George Polk awards. A graduate of Harvard Business School and Yale College, he lives in Brooklyn with his wife and two children.

SMARTER FASTER BETTER: The new book by NYT investigative journalist, Charles Duhigg My guest today is Charles Duhigg, and in this segment of The Not Old Better Show we'll talk the Pulitzer Prize Winning author, New York Times investigative reporter, about his new book, “Smarter Faster Better.” In the book, Charles Duhigg talks about motivation, goal setting and decision making – and why some people get so much done. As always, here on The Not Old Better Show, we'll focus on how those in the 50+ age community can learn, hone, refine our skill set, despite some of the economic forces thrown our way. Charles Duhigg's newest book called “Smarter Faster Better” explores the science of productivity.  Being busy is not the same as being productive. In fact, that's an important distinction, particularly now, today, as it is easier and easier to be busy, and that does not mean that you're necessarily becoming more productive. The most productive people, in fact, often understand that distinction and they go out of their way to try and not be busy, but to do the things that actually matter.  For the Not Old Better audience, we'll learn this science of productivity and how to succeed with less stress and struggle.  Charles Duhigg is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter for The New York Times and the author of The Power of Habit.  Charles Duhigg is a Pulitzer Prize–winning investigative reporter for The New York Times and the author of The Power of Habit. One of the book's best stories is of the creative process around the hit Disney movie “Frozen,” and how the movie, which almost didn't happen, ultimately came together because Disney found the right creative process.  Creativity and productive creativity is about having the right process in place, a creative process that helps people understand how to take the ideas that they know are real and meaningful and to use them in new ways. It's a wonderful book, and we'll put an excerpt to “Smarter Faster Better” in the notes for you, courtesy of Random House and Charles Duhigg.
