In this episode, I talk about the ten biggest drains on our energy at work, and more importantly, what we can do about them. From toxic coworkers who sap morale, to noisy environments that make it hard to focus, to ergonomic setups that leave us tired and sore, these small but constant frictions add up. We also face inbox overload, endless meetings, unclear priorities, and the creeping burnout that comes from trying to do it all. But here's the good news: every one of these drains has a practical solution. Setting boundaries with difficult colleagues. Using noise-cancelling strategies. Adjusting your workstation for comfort and posture. Streamlining your email. Building better meeting habits. Clarifying what actually matters day-to-day. The truth is, you don't need a radical change to reclaim your energy, you need a series of small, intentional shifts. That's what we dive into today: how to plug the leaks, one by one, and create the conditions for focus, flow, and sustainable energy at work.
God has never called anyone to go to church. Throughout the centuries since Jesus began His church, people have been called to live like Jesus as the church. At First we don't want to be just another church on the corner in any community, but a community movement of disciples of Jesus who are making disciples of Jesus in our communities and our homes. Every Community deserves a church that is reaching people far from God to lead them to become disciples of Jesus. Every home needs a Jesus follower leading them to follow Jesus. Over these four weeks we are calling our church to action by making disciples of Jesus who make disciples of Jesus who live like Jesus lived. We'll explore what it means to: Make much of Jesus in a world that minimizes Him Believe that prayer moves the needle Build our lives on the Bible as God's perfect word Live in Community where life transformation happens through JesusThis isn't just about coming to church. This is about being a movement of people who love and follow Jesus. A gospel-centered movement sent into homes, schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods to make an eternal impact. We envision a day when every community in SWLA has a church reaching those far from God and where every home in SWLA has a person living like Jesus. That day starts today.

Oscar Trimboli, renowned listening expert and author, returns with transformative insights from his unique journey of coding listening behaviors into software. Inspired by personal experiences with his father's stroke recovery and extensive research within organizational teams, Oscar reveals how technology and conscious facilitation can dramatically improve listening dynamics, reduce meeting time, and foster authentic participation. In this episode of the listening SUPERPOWER podcast with host Raquel Ark and discover how simple shifts—like asking shorter, clarifying questions and enabling everyone's voice to be heard—can overhaul team communication and unlock untapped commercial and human potential. Learn why “the hardest listening role is the speaker,” how pre-meeting listening can boost confidence, and how vivid metaphors can make your message unforgettable. Whether you lead meetings, manage teams, or want to deepen your listening practice, Oscar provides practical tools and data-driven strategies to elevate your communication for lasting impact. On taking action: "The difference between hearing and listening is action." -- Oscar Trimboli SUPERPOWER Notes: 02:00 — Stroke recovery communication breakthrough—Oscar's father's stroke taught him “you can communicate very effectively with somebody who can't speak” using hand squeezes and positioning techniques that forced medical staff to engage the patient directly 04:42 — Taking responsibility through direct engagement: Moving close to his father's face so medical professionals had to “look at him when they ask a question” helped his father “take responsibility for his recovery” 08:30 – From Microsoft vision to reality: Fifteen years after his boss said “if you could code how you listen, you could change the world,” Oscar now uses AI to analyze meeting dynamics and participation patterns 12:15 –The 80% share of voice problem: Data revealed few participants dominated 80% of speaking time until a different facilitator in week six dramatically increased participation and meeting effectiveness 18:20 – Halving meeting time through inclusion: Better facilitation that included everyone reduced meetings from “90 minutes weekly” to “45 minutes fortnightly” because “people feel heard and get buy-in” 22:45 – Eight words or less rule: Questions of “eight words or less had higher impact” and create “collective understanding” rather than individual comprehension 25:30 –The three-question test: Before asking: “write it down, count words, then ask: is this for me, them, or the group?” Group questions have highest impact 28:15 – Clarifying questions transform meetings:Only “one or two participants” ask clarifying questions consistently, but their presence helps “questions get better and meetings get shorter” 35:45 – Listen before the meeting: Contact executive assistants beforehand to understand question patterns and presentation preferences for high-stakes meetings 42:20 – Metaphors beat numbers:Use compelling metaphors like “budget as jazz band” because “they remember the metaphor before the numbers” 50:30 – The quiet CFO's transformation: A shy CFO's single word “snake” (about shedding old systems) helped transform company growth from 32% to 170% when leadership finally listened Key Takeaways: On the universal listening gap: "We are not good listeners just because we need to be." -- Oscar Trimboli On the speaker's challenge: "The hardest listening role is the person currently speaking." -- Oscar Trimboli On meeting effectiveness: "If you want fewer meetings and shorter ones, when you do have them, focus on inclusive facilitation that ensures everyone is heard.” -- Oscar Trimboli On organizational potential: "My question to you listening is who are you ignoring in your organization that is holding you back from massive untapped potential commercially and human potential as well?" -- Oscar Trimboli On taking action: "The difference between hearing and listening is action." -- Oscar Trimboli Notes/Mentions: Listening Quiz: listeningquiz.com - Discover what gets in your way of listening effectively (35,000+ people have taken it) Tools mentioned: TalkTime and EqualTime (meeting analytics add-ons) Google Meets, Zoom, Microsoft Teams listening add-ons Equal Time (Munich-based company for gender and participation analytics) Books referenced: "What Doctors Say and What Patients Hear" by Dr. Danielle Offrey Oscar's third book on listening (influenced by his father's stroke experience) Listening measurement tools: Talk-to-listen ratios, question analysis, clarifying question tracking, curiosity index Connect with Oscar Trimboli www.oscartrimboli.com LinkedIn Deep Listening: Impact Beyond Words Connect with Raquel Ark: www.listeningalchemy.com Mobile: + 491732340722 contact@listeningalchemy.com LinkedIn Substack listening ALCHEMY newsletter Podcast email: listeningsuperpower@gmail.com
In an enlightening and intense discussion, I sat down with James Laughlin, a globally recognised high-performance coach and a seven-time world champion musician. Through our conversation, we explored the essence of peak performance, personal belief systems, and the integral role of habits in fostering success. James offered valuable insights into his journey and the mental and physical frameworks that cultivate true high performance. What You'll Learn: The Foundation of High Performance: Understand James's perspective on how true peak performance is about exceeding norms while maintaining healthy relationships and well-being—not just relentlessly pursuing success at the cost of everything else. Radical Clarity: Learn why getting radically clear on your wants and needs is crucial in defining your path and avoiding distractions influenced by external pressures. Belief Systems and Their Impact: Discover how intrinsic and extrinsic motivations shape our drive and affect our outcomes, and why fostering strong, empowering beliefs is key. The Role of 'Meds' in Performance: James introduces the 'Meds' concept—mental training, exercise, diet, and sleep—as a holistic approach to supporting high performance and general well-being. The Pitfalls of Traditional Education: We discuss how conventional educational systems may not always support creative or high-performing individuals, emphasising the role parents play in filling the gap. The Dangers of Quick Fixes: James explains why there are no shortcuts to peak performance and how high achievers cultivate success through habits, not hustle or luck. Influencing Neurotransmitters Holistically: Explore how habits like meditation, cold therapy, and exercise naturally enhance motivation by regulating neurotransmitters. Motivation and Success: Understand why purpose, mastery, and autonomy, as identified by Daniel Pink, are vital to sustaining motivation and achieving long-term success. Key Takeaways: High performance integrates personal wellness: James believes maintaining balance across all life's facets leads to sustainable success. Understand the 'why': Clarifying your motivations is critical in staying focused and aligned with your true goals. Intrinsic motivation carries greater longevity: Unlike rewards and recognition, personal fulfillment and passion drive deeper and more enduring engagement. Email us at podcast@pursueGOD.org.Donate Now --The Man of Lawlessness (2 Thessalonians 2:1-12)One of the most intriguing passages in Paul's letters is found in 2 Thessalonians 2, where he describes a mysterious figure he calls the “man of lawlessness.” Christians throughout history have debated this passage, and two main questions always rise to the surface: Who is the man of lawlessness, and when will he appear? To answer these questions, we must carefully look at Paul's words and also consider two major perspectives Christians hold when it comes to end-times prophecy: the futurist view and the preterist view. While they differ in how they interpret certain details, both perspectives agree on one unshakable truth—Jesus Christ will return in glory, and evil will ultimately be destroyed.Clarifying the Coming of JesusPaul begins by reminding the Thessalonian believers about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and how we will be gathered to meet Him. The Greek word Paul uses here is parousia, which means “arrival” or “presence.” This is the same word he used in 1 Thessalonians 4, when he described believers being caught up to meet Christ. The emphasis here is on community—believers will be gathered together into God's presence. Far from being left out, every Christian will be part of this ultimate family reunion in the presence of Jesus.False Alarms and the Day of the LordNext, Paul warns his readers not to be shaken by false reports suggesting that the “day of the Lord” had already come. Some people were claiming to have visions or even letters from Paul that misled the church. Paul reminds them that the day of the Lord—the time of God's final judgment and Christ's return—could not have already taken place because two major events must come first:A great rebellion (apostasia in Greek, meaning “falling away”).The revealing of the man of lawlessness. This sets the stage for one of the most debated sections in the New Testament.Who Is the Man of Lawlessness? The futurist view sees the man of lawlessness as a future world leader, the Antichrist, who will rise during the end times, deceive the nations, and exalt himself against God. This is why many futurists expect to see dramatic events unfold—such as the rebuilding of a temple in Jerusalem—before Christ's second coming. The preterist view, however, argues that this prophecy was largely fulfilled in the first century. Many preterists identify the man of lawlessness with Nero Caesar, the infamous...

Why do we follow orders or go along with things that feel wrong? Why might defiance be better than compliance? And how can we go about becoming more defiant?Episode SummaryI've always been fascinated by why people obey, even when it clashes with their instincts or values. In this conversation, I'm joined by Dr Sunita Sah — a physician-turned-organisational psychologist whose work explores the hidden social, cultural, and psychological forces behind compliance. Drawing from her research and personal journey, Sunita reframes defiance as alignment with our true values, not reckless rebellion. We unpack concepts like “insinuation anxiety” — the discomfort of signalling someone else might be wrong — and explore her five-stage model of defiance, from recognising tension to taking decisive action. Sunita explains why compliance is often mistaken for consent, why both have distinct definitions, and why many of us have never practised saying “no” skillfully. Along the way, she shares vivid examples from medicine, aviation, parenting, and history, including the calculated defiance of Rosa Parks. For leaders, Sunita offers a challenge: create environments where dissent is safe and effective, and treat defiance as valuable feedback. For all of us, she suggests starting small — practising low-stakes resistance to build our “defiance muscle.” Whether you're a rule-maker, rule-follower, or both, this episode invites you to rethink the stories you tell yourself about compliance, and to see saying “no” as a powerful tool for living with integrity. Guest Bio Self-Description:Dr Sunita Sah is a physician-turned-organisational psychologist and Professor of Management Studies at Cornell University. Her research examines the social, organisational, and psychological forces that influence decision-making, particularly in contexts involving authority, conflicts of interest, and ethical dilemmas. She is the author of Defy: The Power of No in a World That Demands Yes (US title: Defy: How to Speak Up When It Matters), a book that reframes defiance as a vital life skill. Listeners will hear real-world examples and solutions for stepping back from micromanaging, setting clear expectations, and building trust within the team. Drew and Karl also discuss the importance of having a well-defined owner role and the necessity of planning for the agency's future, whether that means bringing in outside leadership or preparing the business for sale. Their conversation is peppered with relatable stories, honest admissions, and tactical recommendations on how agency owners can intentionally create a less chaotic, more profitable, and ultimately more enjoyable agency life. This episode delves into the crucial role of well-positioned goals in a developer's career. It asserts that goals provide clarity, perspective, and purpose, particularly focusing on clarity as a primary benefit. The discussion challenges common struggles with goal setting, including the often-overlooked importance of relevance (the 'R' in SMART goals), suggesting that an irrelevant goal, no matter how specific or measurable, is ultimately ineffective. The core message highlights that the purpose of a goal is to serve as a clarifying and prioritising tool, enabling you to make decisions about what to do and focus your efforts, rather than simply doing work that is handed to you. You will learn to start small and focus on desired outcomes or what you want to be true, accepting that a goal only needs to be "directionally correct" rather than perfect. The episode also provides a practical heuristic: to set goals by considering how your boss will evaluate your performance in the future. It emphasises the importance of setting goals that are challenging but sustainable, avoiding common pitfalls like overly abstract, too easy, or demoralisingly difficult goals, to prevent disengagement and burnout. Ultimately, consistent goal setting and reflection are presented as key drivers for long-term career success.Understand the fundamental importance of goals in providing clarity, perspective, and purpose in your career, especially for driven developers.Recognise that relevance is the most critical factor in goal setting; a goal's specificity or measurability is meaningless if it is not the right goal for you.Grasp that the primary function of a goal is to help you make decisions about what to do, acting as a clarifying, prioritising, and focusing tool for your efforts.Challenge the mindset that your goal as a software engineer is merely to complete assigned work; without personal goals, your career changes and skill development will be difficult.Learn to start small when setting goals and focus on desired outcomes or what you genuinely want to be true in your career.Embrace the concept of a "directionally correct" goal, understanding that a goal does not need to be perfect to guide you effectively towards a larger, long-term outcome.Utilise reflection after meeting a goal to assess whether it moved you closer to your long-term objectives, providing valuable steering for future goals.Employ a practical heuristic for goal setting: imagine how your boss would evaluate your performance in six months or a year, and set goals around those anticipated factors.Be proactive in discussing career growth and goal setting with your manager, framing it as an opportunity for them to direct your efforts towards organisational wins.Identify and avoid common pitfalls in goal setting, such as goals that are too abstract (not tractable), too easy (causing disengagement), or too difficult (leading to demoralisation).Strive for goals that offer a challenging but sustainable chance of success (e.g., around a 60% probability), requiring focus and the ability to say no, without leading to burnout.Understand that consistency in setting and pursuing goals is what ultimately defines long-term success, rather than the perfection of any single goal.
