he Untolld Story of NYC's Weed KiingpiinGenovese mob-scion Silvio Eboli lived within the shadows of history, and now for the first time, the untold story of a mafia legend is revealed. The Ganja Godfather (Trineday, March 23, 2015, ISBN: 978-1937584955) s the story about an ongoing organized criminal operation, in real time with firsthand accounts and experiences by award-winning author and investigative journalist, Toby Rogers.Shadowing the Ganja Godfather, Rogers witnesses it all standing next to the Boss himself: violence, drugs, celebrities, girls, construction hustles, crime-family business meetings and social gatherings. From strip clubs in Atlantic City to Sunday night dinner with the wife and kids, Rogers experiences whatever the Ganja Godfather does on any given day. As exhilarating as Silvio's life had become, it certainly was much more stressful behind the scenes. Being the Empire State's spliff king was undoubtedly the hardest job in New York. And it was only after Silvio finally got to the top of the mountain that he realized just how easy it was to fall over the edge. With a wife and kids, dysfunctional family business obligations, and an out-of-control social life all pulling him in conflicting paths, Silvio struggled keep the empire moving forward without detection from law enforcement. But when he was introduced to a Colombian cocaine princess with aspirations to become a model, he saw an opportunity to expand the family's profit margins to unimaginable heights and risked it all despite the collision course with disaster he saw right before him.Toby Rogers is an award winning author and investigative journalist. He has written for the New York Times, New York Post, Village Voice, High Times, Clamor Magazine, and Houston's Public News. He has been featured on MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann, Democracy Now, with Amy Goodman as well as the National Enquirer. He was a consultant and featured in HBO's Horns and Halos documentary.Rogers' first book, Ambushed: Secrets of the Bush Family, was featured in newspapers and magazines in America and internationally. rThe New York Times described Rogers as “a hell of a journalist,” and Ambushed as “very impressive top notch stuBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Fog of Truth: A Podcast About Documentary Film

In this episode of the Fog of Truth, Bart John and Justina delve into the complexities of disinformation, the role of media in society, and the necessity of critical thinking in navigating the digital landscape. They emphasize the importance of being informed and discerning consumers of information. But mostly is it about Amy Goodman and the great film that Carl Deal and  Tia Leesin made about her. In a world where mainstream media often prioritizes corporate interests over the truth, Amy Goodman stands out as a beacon of integrity and relentless pursuit of justice in journalism. The recent film "Steal This Story Please" explores her remarkable journey and the impact of her work with Democracy Now!, an independent news source that provides the public with uncensored information.  This blog post unpacks the key insights from the film and highlights why Goodman's contributions are vital to understanding contemporary media. ## About Amy Goodman Amy Goodman is the founder and executive producer of Democracy Now!, a groundbreaking independent news program that operates without corporate sponsorship. For years, she has dedicated her career to covering stories often overlooked by mainstream media. Her fearless reporting, especially in war zones and during protests, showcases her commitment to uncovering the truth and holding those in power accountable. ## The Relentless Pursuit of Truth One of the film's most striking themes is Goodman's unwavering dedication to her craft. From chasing down officials at climate summits to covering war zones, Goodman's tenacity is emblematic of her commitment to journalistic integrity. - **Why It Matters:** In an era where news is frequently sanitized, Goodman's approach provides a refreshing reminder of the essential role of journalists in democracy. - **Example from the Film:** The opening scene highlights her determination as she relentlessly pursues a government official for comments, showcasing her physical and mental stamina in the field. - **Common Mistake:** Many journalists may shy away from confrontation or challenging the status quo, but Goodman exemplifies the importance of persistence in reporting. ## The Importance of Independent Media Goodman's work with Democracy Now! emphasizes the necessity of independent journalism in today's media landscape. - **The Conventional Thinking: ** Many believe that mainstream media provides a comprehensive view of current events, but this is often far from reality. - **What the Film Reveals:** The film contrasts the coverage of major networks during pivotal events, like the 2008 Republican Convention, with Goodman's on-the-ground reporting of protests and grassroots movements. - **Why This Matters:** Independent media sources like Democracy Now! challenge the narratives presented by corporate news outlets, ensuring that diverse voices and perspectives are heard.

For once, veteran journalist Amy Goodman is answering the questions instead of asking them. The longtime host of the daily news program "Democracy Now!" is the subject of a riveting documentary, "Steal This Story, Please." The film goes behind the scenes with Goodman, the sharp-witted granddaughter of an Orthodox rabbi, as she navigates a media landscape reshaped by rapid technological change, corporate consolidation and mounting political pressure on the truth. Goodman joined NY1's Errol Louis to discuss working with Oscar Award-nominated filmmakers Carl Deal and Tia Lessin to bring her story to the screen. She also emphasized the enduring importance of independent, listener-supported journalism rooted in the Pacifica Radio tradition. She argued that the media can serve as a force for peace, especially when it centers the voices of people closest to the story, rather than relying on distant pundits.

Recalling times when networks used their video footage, says Goodman, “I encourage that. Steal this story, please. It's a failure if it's an exclusive. We are covering these critical issues of the day, and we want to ensure that these stories get out because independent media is essential to the functioning of a democratic society.”Many journalists and news outlets don't ask tough questions to maintain what she calls the “access of evil — trading truth for access,” and to that, Goodman says, “Then it's not worth being there at all. It's our job to hold those in power to account.” She adds, “We can't have weapons manufacturers, who provide millions to networks to advertise determining our coverage of war. We can't have oil, gas, and coal companies determining our coverage of climate change, or banks and other financial institutions determining how we cover inequality. We need an independent media.”Listen to the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you listen.Keep our investigations free and fearless at theintercept.com/join.
