Matt Kaplan is the science correspondent at The Economist and also the author of a number of books. His latest work is I Told You So!: Scientists Who Were Ridiculed, Exiled, and Imprisoned for Being Right. Greg and Matt discuss how Matt chose science journalism over academia, the value of being a generalist, and how journalists can cross-pollinate ideas from others. They also discuss academic silos, pecking orders, and how fear, funding pressures, and ego create sticky consensuses that punish deviants, and linking historic cases to modern parallels.  Matt argues that incremental NIH/NSF funding discourages bold leaps compared with HHMI-style risk-taking, calls for better incentives for peer review and career transitions for senior scientists, and recounts a case in which a dissenting scientist was attacked to the point that they left the field. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.* Episode Quotes: When scientific silos break, innovation happens 09:31: There was a medical conference at the same hotel where this marine biologist was presenting, and one of the surgeons at the medical conference walked by and listened and talked to the marine biologist afterwards and said, “Hey, are you telling me that that spit will hold together stuff in a salty environment?” And the biologist said, “Well, yeah, it's in the ocean.” And the surgeon went, “‘Cause we have really serious problems getting glue that works in the saline environment of a bloody surgery table because your blood is salty, and glues don't work, and we can't put bones together with bolts when the bones are fragments.” So together, they ultimately collaborated and created a glue from the sandcastle worm that's now used in surgery tables around the world. And it was just my favorite word in the world: serendipity. Total serendipity. Why institutions resist new ideas 14:18: I think uncertainty and fear make us cling to the things that we know. And the more uncomfortable we are with change, the more we cling like a security blanket to the consensus. Big problems require bigger risks 31:13: I don't think we do enough of the Howard Hughes-type stuff because we got some pretty big problems. I mean, feeding eight billion people, dealing with climate change, generating enough power to have all of the nations of the world have electricity and refrigeration. We can all come together and say refrigeration is probably pretty important. Defeating pandemics. We really have a lot of stuff that needs to be done, and that's not going to get done if we keep taking baby steps. We've got really big problems, and to do that, we need to get comfortable with failure real fast, and we currently are just not accepting it. The Golden age, silver-screen legend who lived to tell a tale that could have only unfolded in Hollywood , Mamie Van Doren joins Media Path for a candid conversation about a life shaped by resilience, reinvention, and remarkable twists of fate! The woman who helped define an extraordinary era of entertainment and cultural change has chronicled both her escapades and her conquered adversities in a page-turning new memoir called 'You Thought I Was Dead: My Life of Celebrities, Sex and Champagne.'Mamie traces her grit back to a hard scrabble, Depression era, South Dakota childhood where poverty and hunger were a daily reality. Determined to escape that world, she set her sights on Hollywood, with a little help from lore, intentionally placing herself at a pharmacy soda counter in the in hopes of being “discovered,” just as Lana Turner had been. She was stunning and it worked. She was also 14!What followed was a series of cinematic turning points. Including a TV role, broadcast from The famed Florentine Gardens and a close friendship with cocktail server Elizabeth Short, who horrifically became known as The Black Dahlia. Her brutal loss has affected Mamie profoundly and permanently.Mamie recounts her rapid rise through the studio system after being spotted by a Universal executive, leading to a seven-year contract and her breakout role opposite Tony Curtis (and some handsome USC football stars) in 'All American'. She shares the origin of her now-iconic name, coined by an AP reporter and inspired by First Lady, Mamie Eisenhower. Its coining helped a farm girl named Joanie Olander fully embody her new Hollywood persona. After marrying bandleader Ray Anthony and starting a family, Universal dropped her contract, only to see her quickly courted by other studios. She reflects on love, longevity, and her current 50+ year marriage to Thomas Dixon, as well as the complicated realities of navigating Hollywood at a time when powerful men often operated without accountability. In a deeply personal revelation, Mamie speaks about a terrifyingly dark encounter with Jack Webb that she kept silent for years. He was selling “law and order” when he drugged, tied up and violated Mamie. She reflects now about how much (and how little) has changed.Stories where Hollywood and history intersect are a common thread in Mamie's adventures, such as a romantic interlude with Che Guevara while filming in Buenos Aires, and a dangerous, self-funded three-month tour to the furthest outposts of the Vietnam War to entertain troops. The gravest danger she faced was an on-stage attack at an officers' club in Saigon. But her time with the troops remains an experience that shaped her perspective on freedom and sacrifice. And IMDB Roulette this week is raucous, racy and romantic, with a trip to the cutting edge of rock 'n roll! Is Mamie the girl who invented it!?In current recommendations --Lisa: Documentary (directed by our very own Weezy!) Today on part two of another brand new encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Suzanne Lloyd, granddaughter to silent film comedy icon, Harold Lloyd. Suzanne, as you heard in last week's episode is quite the steward for her grandfather's work and his legacy. She's the one who controls it entirely and she's done a tremendous job keeping it all alive, nearly a century after his career was at the very top of young Hollywood. Aside from the creative genius of the comedy of Harold Lloyd in films like Safety Last, which has the famous scene of his dangling from a clock, Suzanne tells us about the almost fairytale existence her fun loving grandfather provided in their estate known as Green Acres. We hear about all his passions – including Christmas, bowling which he did with Howard Hughes, the Shriner's hospital, early hi-fi audio and a very specific type of photography. 3-D photography. Did you even know that existed? Harold Lloyd sure did. This episode should come with a pop culture handbook of a who's who in the entertainment industry from the last century. We hear first-hand stories about the Rolling Stones, Debbie Reynolds, Disneyland, Roddy McDowell, Rick Nelson, Paul McCartney, Marilyn Monroe and many more. Much of it revolves around the Green Acres estate and an almost Barnum-like extravaganza for bringing the circus to your front door. The conversation begins mid-stream (which we salute Suzanne for btw) comparing her grandfather, the silent film star with early television icon Ernie Kovacs, Television's Original Genius. The parallel universe of these two comedic giants begins now, on the Rarified Heir Podcast with Suzanne Llloyd. Take a listen.

Michael plays devil's advocate and argues that human societies naturally refine their values over time. Monogamy works better. Less crime is good. These truths emerge through trial and error. Matt pushes back hard. Without truth and love as a fixed reference point, he argues, the word "better" loses all meaning. What looks like natural progress is actually borrowed capital from a civilization built on Judeo-Christian values. They explore Canada's assisted suicide program, the sterilization of young people through the transgender movement, and Nietzsche's warning that removing God does not just remove religion. It unmoors everything. This one goes deep. It is about what happens when a culture forgets where its values came from. And why substituting anything for God makes your world smaller. Cheers y'all

We've reached the final curtain call for our Cate Blanchett spotlight here on We Drink & We Watch Things, and we're closing out with the performance that officially turned her into an Oscar winner: Martin Scorsese's 2004 epic, The Aviator. It's the ultimate meta-cinematic challenge - one of the greatest modern actresses stepping into the sensible shoes of the greatest Golden Age actress, Katharine Hepburn. Mix yourself something classic and sophisticated - perhaps a Howard's Punch by Mackenzie - and let's head to the golf course. This week, we examine the sheer audacity of Cate's "impersonation-turned-performance," looking at how she mastered that iconic, rapid-fire New England lockjaw and the athletic, "don't-fence-me-in" energy that defined Hepburn. We break down her electric chemistry with Leonardo DiCaprio's Howard Hughes, specifically that brilliantly uncomfortable family dinner at the Hepburn estate where two different worlds of American aristocracy collide. We also discuss the film's stunning visual evolution, as Scorsese uses "two-strip" and "three-strip" Technicolor effects to mirror the era, and how Cate manages to shine through the stylized, vibrant hues as a woman who was "too much" for any one man to hold onto.If you love the glamour of Old Hollywood, the technical precision of a master at work, or just want to hear us debate if anyone else could have pulled off "Hot Dawg!" with such conviction, this is the perfect finale. About Gather AI Gather AI is an intralogistics AI company which collects visual data from drones, forklifts, and connected machines, integrates it with warehouse management systems (WMS) and cloud platforms, and uses AI to identify issues and suggest next steps. Key Takeaways: Real-World Supply Chain AI Applications In "Real-World Supply Chain AI Applications with Gather AI's Sankalp Arora", Joe Lynch and Sankalp Arora, CEO and Co-founder at Gather AI, discuss how Gather AI's combination of drone-collected visual data, AI analysis, and WMS integration is revolutionizing warehouse inventory management. Bridging Robotics Expertise to Logistics: Sankalp Arora's foundational work in safety and sensor planning for autonomous helicopters (a DARPA-funded project) highlights how sophisticated robotics and computer vision expertise is now being directly applied to create reliable, "real-world" AI solutions for the supply chain. Visual Data is the New Inventory Input: Gather AI utilizes hardware like drones, forklifts, and connected machines to collect vast amounts of visual data within a warehouse, moving beyond manual counts and traditional scanning methods to capture inventory status comprehensively and automatically. Intralogistics Focus: The primary application of this AI is in intralogistics (operations inside the warehouse), specifically tackling challenges like inventory inaccuracy, cycle counting, and labor efficiency—common pain points for WMS (Warehouse Management Systems) users. From Data to Actionable Insights: The platform doesn't just collect data; its core value is using AI to identify specific issues (e.g., misplaced items, damaged inventory, out-of-stock locations) and then suggesting next steps, making the data immediately actionable for warehouse staff. Critical System Integration: For successful real-world adoption, the AI platform must integrate seamlessly with Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and cloud platforms, ensuring the visual intelligence updates the enterprise system of record effectively. AI for Operational Efficiency: By automating data collection and analysis, the technology shifts labor away from tedious inventory tasks, allowing personnel to focus on high-value activities, leading to significant gains in operational efficiency and inventory accuracy. Industry Validation of Innovation: Recognition through awards like CB Insights' AI 100 and various Supply Chain Partner awards validates that Gather AI's approach is recognized as a leading, commercially viable, and impactful NextGen Supply Chain technology. He explains the rapid rise of online gaming and sounds the alarm about prediction markets—a new betting-style system where participants don't place bets but instead “trade” on out-comes. Roger also talks about protecting the integrity of gaming, the role of the Nevada Gaming Control Board, and highlights the often overlooked innovators shaping the modern casino industry. Along the way, he makes a spirited case that Elvis Presley and Howard Hughes both de-serve a place in the Gaming Hall of Fame. Now based in Boulder City, Nevada, where he's lived for the past 20 years, Roger keeps close tabs on the gaming world while producing three podcasts: “The Boulder City Podcast,” “The Gaming Legacy Podcast,” and the “GGB Podcast,” where he interviews both veter-an legends and today's industry leaders—including his first “Gaming Legacy Podcast” guest, Jack Binion. He also explains why he prefers recording interviews in person whenever possible—and shares whether he's optimistic about the future of Las Vegas. (Also Watch Full Podcast Video)

Texans President Mike Tomon details the new Toro District HQ, plus Marc and John play a blind free agent game to pick Houston's next RB from Walker, Hall & ETN. It's Friday the 13th, and Marc Vandermeer and John Harris pack this edition of Texans All-Access with two major segments: a league-wide quarterback confidence ranking and a creative blind free agent running back game that ends with a surprising pick. The show opens with a wide-ranging NFL quarterback discussion sparked by a simple question: how many fan bases can truly plant a flag and say "my quarterback — we're good"? The duo works through every starter in the league, from Josh Allen's injury concerns to Drake Maye's Carson Wentz comparisons, Kyler Murray's uncertain future, Aaron Rodgers' age, and Tua Tagovailoa's fit in Miami under new head coach Jeff Hafley. The conversation loops back to C.J. Stroud and why, despite the playoff disappointment, the Texans remain confident in their quarterback going into 2026. Then John introduces a blind "mystery dating game" for running backs, reading three PFF scouting profiles stripped of names, and asking Marc to pick one. The reveal: Marc chooses Super Bowl LX MVP Kenneth Walker III of the Seahawks, with Breece Hall of the Jets and Travis Etienne of the Jaguars as the other options. The segment sparks a deeper discussion about free agency running back strategy, Joe Mixon's uncertain status, and what Woody Marks and the backfield need going forward. The show closes with Texans President Mike Tomon's interview with Sean Pendergast and Seth Payne about the newly announced Toro District — the franchise's 83-acre headquarters, training facility, and mixed-use development in Bridgeland. Tomon details the vision for the facility, the partnership with Howard Hughes, the youth sports and women's sports integration, and more.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

But later in life, she reinvented herself as an artist and photographer. In 1974, she secured an exclusive photo shoot and interview with Cuban leader Fidel Castro, during which he gave her his watch as a gift. On episode 136 of the Director Watch Podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter are joined by AwardsWatch contributor Trace Sauveur to discuss the final film in their Warren Beatty series, Rules Don't Apply (2016). Welcome back to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, the boys attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. In a Howard Hughes like move, for close to two decades, the world got used to see Warren Beatty more as the arm candy for his wife at award shows and less so as a direct. But in the mid-2010s, Beatty finally got back to the director chair to make his long-awaited dream project, a film about the famous Hughes. It was a box office, critical disaster of epic proportions, but in the time of its release, and in the process of going over his directorial achievements, it's a bittersweet ending (potentially) to one of the most curious figures in Hollywood history, with the film becoming a meta commentary on where the world and Beatty see himself; it's really the films only redeeming quality. Ryan, Jay, and Trace break down the film, their thoughts on it, how Beatty mirrors Hughes later years, how it almost continues the story after the events of The Aviator, cream jeans, the cinemas in the greater Georgia area, the 2016 Oscar fiasco, whose fault it really was, some justice for Alden Ehrenreich, and a mention or two about Rob Lowe singing with Snow White at the Oscars (yes, it really happened). Plus, the guys give out their rankings of the Beatty series and preview their next movie series starting next week. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h08m. The guys will be back next week to begin their series on the films of Chantal Akerman with a review of her first film, Je Tu Il Elle (1974). You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Music: MUSICALIFE, from Pond5 (intro) and "B-3" from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Thursday morning, the 4th of December, 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of Proverbs 14:12: “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.” Then we go to the New Testament, to 1 Corinthians 10:12: “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.”Today I read a beautiful article in another devotional and the title was “Deterioration”. I looked up the Oxford Dictionary. It means, “becoming gradually worse or going downhill.” Now Solomon had an incredibly wonderful start in his life. Remember? Remember, the Lord woke him up and he was dreaming and He said, “What do you want? I will give you anything.” And he said, “I want wisdom to govern my people.” Solomon was the son of King David. The Lord said to him, ”Because you have asked correctly, I am going to give you everything else.” He was the wisest man who ever lived, he was an architect (remember, he built the temple), he was extremely popular, a very, very handsome man, very clever. He also wrote the Book of Ecclesiastes, we believe. He talks about “Vanity, vanity, this life is like chasing the wind.” I hope you are not there today, my friend. I really mean that with all of my heart.I really hope you don't think, “I have got it all together, I don't need anybody, I can do this myself, I have made my own plan." Folks, there is only one way down when you get to the top, and that is straight down. I want to tell you about a man named Howard Hughes. Maybe some of the younger people don't remember him. Howard Hughes was a filmmaker, an aviator, and an incredible pilot and aircraft designer. They described him as a millionaire genius who lost his mind. Isn't that so sad? He lost his mind. What happened? He became a recluse, living all by himself, and then slowly but surely wasted away to nothing. I want to say to you today, be careful how you stand lest you fall.Jesus bless you and goodbye.

Today, we'll take a look at the opposite: some financial mistakes that even wealthy people tend to make, and how we can help avoid them. More SML Planning Minute Podcast Episodes Transcript of Podcast Episode 359 Hello, this is Bill Rainaldi, with another edition of Security Mutual's SML Planning Minute. In today's episode: nine mistakes wealthy people make. A few weeks ago, we took an in-depth look at some of the things affluent people understand that the rest of us seem to miss. But even successful, well-educated people do some dumb things. Today, we'll cover the exact opposite of what we did before: some financial mistakes that even wealthy people tend to make. Here are nine of them: Putting too much money into a single investment. Diversification is one of the cardinal rules of investing, but many wealthy people tend to break it. And it's understandable why. So many of the ultra-rich became that way by starting, or investing in, just one or a handful of companies. Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are great examples of this. At some point, putting too much money into a single investment just creates unnecessary risk. Some employees at companies like Enron and Lehman Brothers put all their retirement savings in their company stock. It worked spectacularly—for a while—but it eventually became almost worthless in a very short time. [1] Very few investors enjoy the measure of success that Musk and Bezos experienced. They can be underinsured. It doesn't really matter how wealthy you are, people make mistakes with their insurance across the board. If you don't have enough homeowner's insurance, it could end up costing you millions if you live in a valuable home.[2] And if you're concerned about your children and grandchildren, life insurance can be an important and efficient way to transfer your wealth to future generations. They have too much personal real estate. Some wealthy people tend to have too many expensive homes in remote places that they rarely visit. And they can be a significant cash drain. If you don't use the place frequently, it may not be worth holding onto it. If you want to vacation in some unusual places, sometimes it may be better to rent.[3] Or if you insist on keeping the place, maybe you should consider renting it out when you're not using it. Trying to keep up with their peers. It's human nature, and the wealthy aren't exempt from keeping up with the Joneses. When we see our friends living it up, it tends to make us want to do the same. And if we're not careful, it could mean significantly less savings and too much debt.[4] Lack of liquidity. Private equity is all the rage these days, but there's a downside. Some people tend to be too optimistic when they buy into illiquid assets. The fact is that for a variety of reasons, most of them don't work out, even if it seems like a great idea. And if it doesn't work out, it can be a drag on your finances for years.[5] Fear of missing out, or “FOMO.” It seems that no one is exempt from this. Believe it or not, a recent study suggested that the wealthy are actually among the worst offenders.[6] Rich people may think they know better than the average investor. But they can be just as susceptible to media hype and/or greed. It pays to keep a long-term perspective and remember the fundamentals. Neglecting estate planning. What do Howard Hughes, Prince, Sonny Bono and Pablo Picasso have in common? They all died with a lot of money but without a will.[7] It seems that the wealthy should all have done at least some rudimentary estate planning. But that's not always the case.Whether you have a lot of money or not, you probably want to make sure it goes to the people or charitable organizations you care the most about. But if you don't have an estate plan, you give up your right to decide these things. And it's not just a will. It can be a succession plan for your business or an advance medical directive.[8] Lifestyle creep. There is a tendency among the wealthy: the more you make, the more you end up spending on things like travel, fancy meals and transportation. There are so many examples of people—such as Michael Jackson or Lindsay Lohan—who overdid it and paid the price later on. The truth is that it's easy to increase your lifestyle, but once you're there, it's much harder to bring it back down. If you're not careful, spending habits can become unsustainable for just about anybody.[9] Not understanding that wealth is about more than money. Newsflash: some of the richest people in the world are terribly unhappy. In the words of author Riley Clendenin, “True financial success isn't just about accumulating wealth—it's about using money as a tool to build a meaningful, balanced life. The smartest investors understand that their financial portfolio is only one part of their overall wealth, and they invest just as much in their health, personal growth, and happiness as they do in their bank accounts.”[10] The ultra-wealthy certainly have the benefit of a bigger cushion when they make a financial error. And they all make mistakes, some big, some little. But the rest of us can also learn something from the errors that wealthy people tend to make, and how to avoid them. In this episode of Gangland Wire, retired Kansas City Intelligence Unit detective Gary Jenkins sits down with author Jay Baer to explore the hidden, human side of organized crime's biggest names — Al Capone, Meyer Lansky, John Gotti, and Paul Castellano. Jay's book, Mob Life: The Private World of Capone, Lansky, Gotti, and Castellano, takes a unique look beyond the murders, rackets, and headlines to reveal how these mobsters actually lived — what they ate, how they dressed, their relationships with religion, and how they handled immense power and wealth. Listeners will hear: How Al Capone's family sold his spaghetti sauce recipe to Ragu — their first commercial product. Why Meyer Lansky, the most devout of the four, was denied the right to die in Israel by Prime Minister Golda Meir. The lavish lifestyle and fatal missteps of Paul Castellano, the “Howard Hughes of the Mafia.”   The contrast between Gotti's flamboyance and Lansky's low profile — and how each approach shaped their downfall. The staggering fortunes these men built — and how, in the end, they all lost it. Jay also shares his own lifelong fascination with organized crime, his career outside writing, and his upcoming project, How to Live Like a Gangster — No Prison Required, a look at mob values like loyalty, respect, and power through a modern lens. Gary and Jay swap mob history from New York to Kansas City, including a discussion of the real story behind scenes from Casino and Kansas City's own underworld power struggles. On this gripping episode, we're joined by Heidi Luv from The Unfiltered Rise Podcast to unravel the secretive power structure known as the Mormon Mafia—a hidden network with deep ties to Howard Hughes, whose most trusted aide, Mormon elite William Gay, quietly ran Hughes' empire for over five decades. We dive into how the Mormon influence still echoes today in pop culture and power circles, from Las Vegas' mobbed-up founding to The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. Plus, we explore the mystifying “Mormon will,” the 34-year battle over Hughes' estate, and the shocking bloodline claims linking Joseph Smith to Jesus himself. Could ancient Templar traditions, Viking settlements in Canada, and the Mi'kmaq people all be part of this tangled, divine-right narrative?
