Here's what we're reading, recommending, and revisiting this week.Catherine's library find is another for our scatology shelf: It combines farts (hilarious) with Where's Waldo-style search and find illustrations. She encountered Who Farted?, but reports that Find the Farter is also an option, should you need more than one of these titles.Terri's random recommendation is a shout-out to central air conditioning. After living without it for several days, she's appreciating it now and wants to make sure we all do, if we're lucky enough to have it.In the archives, we checked in on an episode from 2020 on the emptying nest.Next week's lineup: Lost S3 E8, "Flashes Before Your Eyes," on Tuesday, July 22The Gilded Age S3 E1, "Who Is in Charge Here?," on Wednesday, July 23Weekly roundup on Thursday, July 24Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available. This episode was recorded before a live studio audience ... of dogs.

It's the first day of July and already France and parts of Europe are enduring their second major heatwave with no respite. From the shores of the Mediterranean, warmed by waters at an alarming 26°C, to the rooftop of Europe – Mont Blanc – where the mercury's got no business venturing above freezing this early in the summer, how to adapt to the new normal? With poorly adapted schools forced to shut, the French far-right's Marine Le Pen is advocating air conditioning for all. But A/C begets higher energy consumption. And with the same far-right party against wind farms and the switch away from gasoline-powered cars, is air conditioning a basic necessity or do alternatives exist on the planet's fastest-heating continent? When we look at what Paul says about the church at Thessalonica, it puts the American church to shame. This church was facing severe persecution yet they worked hard and did loving deeds. The Greek word for “deeds” is kopos and it means they toiled and labored, even against opposition, to the point of exhaustion. They made such an impact for the kingdom that Paul said everywhere they go, people are talking about the church in Thessalonica. In America, we have turned “church” into big buildings with air conditioning, we come in and sing a few songs then listen to a preacher for a few minutes, while our kids are hanging out in youth ministry where they are entertained for a while.
