On the latest episode of Mormon Book Reviews, Gene Judson comes on to talk about his recent experiences of visting the Mormon History Association and Sunstone for the very first time! We discuss his interactions with Richard & Claudia Bushman, Newell Bringhurst, what it was like to be a cameraman for MBR, and being Joe Geisner's "eyes and ears" at the MHA. We then talk about him volunteering at Sunstone, how awesome Lindsay Hansen Park is and the nice note she wrote for him, and saving the day by getting the baseball caps to the Kickball Tournament! Gene then shares his personal faith journey and he also makes some awesome book recommendations. This is what Gene thought of the interview afterwards, "Thanks to Steve for letting me share my rookie experiences at Mormon History Assoc. Conf. and at Sunstone! Also for being able to pay tribute to Lindsay Hansen Park and all her contributions to the Restoration!" #Sunstone #LindsayHansenPark #MHA
A whole episode about Ezra Taft Benson and Cleon Skousen! We invite Dr. Matt Harris, author of the recent “Watchman on the Tower; Ezra Taft Benson and the Making of the Mormon Right” along with friend of the show, Joseph Geisner, to discuss the life and influences of Mormon Prophet, Ezra Benson. A product of the red scare and McCarthyism, Benson rose to prominence as Dwight Eisenhower’s Secretary of Agriculture and continued to gain status as a radical right-wing conspiracy theorist general authority, eventually becoming prophet of the church in 1985. Arguably, no other individual has had more influence making Mormonism a conservative religion than Benson himself. Please pick up a copy of Matt’s book from Benchmark Books here: https://www.benchmarkbooks.com/ or ring them up and have them send you a copy at 801-486-3111. After that, we do our next installment of Cleon Skousen’s “The Naked Communist” with added context from the interview. Then we round out the show with some happy news about high early-voter turnout during our important 2020 election. Let's be fair. Neither Joseph nor Brigham could be considered as good men in their care, affection, fidelity and love for their wives. To the contrary, they were want to swap them, share them, manipulate them, ignore them, betray them and abandon them. We might make much of Joseph's affection for Emma, but he broke her heart over and over again. These were two men for whom the idea of a good husband had entirely eluded them. And there was a terrible price to pay for all of the women who had to endure what could only be considered a despicable mischief. Joe Geisner joins me to discuss wives, sex, priesthood, power in Joseph's inner circle.
Brigham Young's status in the early LDS Movement needs to be understood in order to tackle the hard question of what gave him the right to claim the presidency, particularly in light of the fact that it is now well known that the transfiguration of Brigham was a myth. Joe Geisner joins me to discuss Brigham's 'right' to succeed Joseph?
Joe Geisner returns to spend 2 hours on one of the most iconic and influential characters in recent Mormon history, Boyd K. Packer. We discuss his inauguration into the Quorum of Apostles and how he molded and shaped the church from the highest leadership body from that time forward. We cover the internal issues between Packer and the church’s history department, discuss the shroud of secrecy he helped to foster, and then get into the outward expressions he declared from the pulpit which directly influenced members and national politics. We wrap with discussing what kind of a legacy was left behind when Packer died in 2015. Over 7,000 General Conference talks given by hundreds of General Authorities, mistakes must have been made, right? Our guest this week, Joe Geisner, walks us through 120 years of Mormon General Conference addresses that were censored in some way. From the earliest talks by John W. Taylor to more recent addresses by Boyd K. Packer, the history of disunity within the highest ranks of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the resulting censorship, is a surprisingly dense and fascinating subject. Joe was nice enough to give us over 5 hours of his time, making this episode part 1 of 3.
