No other American colony projected such extensive power with so few people. We recount how the French explored the vast northern region they called “Canada” for decades in pursuit of furs and the Northwest Passage, but repeatedly failed to plant a lasting colony in the harsh and forbidding land—until they found in Samuel de Champlain a leader with the shrewdness and grit to overcome the severe cold, the vast distances, and the treacherous politics of the Saint Lawrence basin. We trace the growth of Quebec from little more than a warehouse in the frozen wildnerness to a thriving town, controlling the most critical gateway into the continent and serving as the hub of a lucrative trading network, a vast constellation of mission towns and outposts (including the Christianizing experiment known as Montreal), and most importantly, a formidable indigenous alliance system that dominated the continenet from the Atlantic to Lake Superior. Finally, we consider the disasters of the mid-1600s, including deadly epidemics and warfare with the Five Nations, that brought Canada's most important allies to their knees and threatened to wipe the colony off the map. Imagine hopping on a train and reaching another continent in just minutes—sounds like science fiction, right? Well, scientists are working on a futuristic vacuum tube train that could make it possible! This concept, called hyperloop or vactrain, would use airtight tunnels with super-low air resistance, allowing trains to travel at nearly the speed of sound. That means a trip from New York to London or Paris to Beijing could be faster than a regular plane ride! The technology is still in development, but if it works, it could change travel forever—no long flights, no jet lag, just smooth, ultra-fast rides. Who knows? In the future, your next vacation might start with a train ride across the ocean!

My guest Peter C. Mancall's new book is Contested Continent: The Struggle for North America, c. 1000–1680. It is, now, the first volume in the Oxford History of the United States, an ongoing multi-volume narrative series—a series whose story is worth an episode in and of itself. In Contested Continent, Mancall describes the foundation of that place which would eventually become the United States. It is a long era of human history which foreshadowed that which was to come, one in which peoples from four continents came together in a collision of violence and mutuality in North America. “Much of what happened,” he writes, “came to define the American experience, including the rise of a booming transatlantic economy based on the extraction of abundant American natural resources, the central role European migrants and their descendants played in the enslavement of Africans, the displacement of Indigenous peoples, and the spread of self-governing polities where many people enjoyed religious liberty. None of those developments was inevitable. Nor did sweeping changes occur quickly.” Or we might say that like the glaciers of an advancing ice age, the events of this era often seem slow and ponderous, but ultimately they change everything that gets in their way.Peter C. Mancall is Distinguished Professor, Andrew W. Mellon Professor of the Humanities, and Director of the USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute at the University of Southern California. He is the author of numerous books, including Fatal Journey: The Final Expedition of Henry Hudson and Hakluyt's Promise: An Elizabethan's Obsession for an English America.

Instead of chasing search traffic and social algorithms, they created a weekly PDF newspaper designed specifically for smartphones and distributed it through platforms like WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, and email. The idea was to bring back the simplicity of a curated newspaper while adapting it to how people actually consume information today. Six years later, The Continent reaches tens of thousands of readers across Africa and around the world. In a recent interview, Kings explained how the publication grew entirely through word of mouth, why its unusual PDF format created a deeper relationship with readers, and how it's building a sustainable media business outside the traditional web ecosystem.

Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week on the podcast I'm back in Accra, back on the Continent, just in time to commemorate African Liberation Day--Africa Day 2026. Last year around this time, my guest and I were preparing for our respective sessions at AfroTalks 2025 @ University of Ghana-Legon where we shared stories and proposed solutions centering the theme "HOW?" aimed at fostering critical introspection, sustainable community impact, and the amplification of African stories by Africans. I shared insights taken from our Future of Work salon series and featured Glocal Citizens specifically engaged in impact-driven solutions for us by us. My guest, Dr. Ashley D. Milton was part of a duo presenting The Triangle Offensive Policy. She joins us a year later to share how her work has progressed and her consortium prepares to release the The State of the Africa Diaspora Report, a first-of-its-kind continental grounding document examining how Africa and its global diaspora connect across mobility, investment, culture, skills, governance, technology, and development systems. The report brings together policymakers, researchers, entrepreneurs, creatives, and community stakeholders across Africa and the diaspora to shape a more coordinated and regenerative future. As a strategist, researcher, and systems builder working at the intersection of Africa, its global diaspora, and the future of regenerative economic development she is the Founder and Managing Director of She Grows It™ (SGI), a Pan-African consulting and investment migration advisory firm. Ashley leads work across green infrastructure, trade and industry, tourism and hospitality, diaspora engagement, governance strategy, and emerging technology systems designed to support long-term African growth and resilience. She has advised on projects ranging from IFC EDGE green building certification and sustainable development strategy to diaspora policy frameworks, investment positioning, and institutional ecosystem development. Her work consistently centers one core question: how do we build systems that allow African people, businesses, and communities to thrive across generations? Where to find Dr. Ashley? Australia built a fence across the entire continent, called the Dingo Fence, to protect their livestock from wild dingoes. These dingoes were preying on sheep and cattle, causing huge losses for farmers. The fence, stretching over 5,600 kilometers, aimed to keep the dingoes out of southeastern Australia, where most of the farming happens. It's one of the longest structures in the world, designed to control the dingo population and safeguard agriculture. The fence has had mixed results, impacting both the environment and wildlife in various ways. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this episode, we return to the European continent to analyse why leadership remains paralysed by the "Western Bubble". While we dedicated much of last week's episode to the United States, Europe's current aimlessness and blind actionism deserve a much deeper dissection.German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's recent comments at a school regarding the US war in Iran serve as a perfect example of the managerial mindset. By calling the US "humiliated" without a broader strategic plan, Merz has managed to anger Washington without gaining any of the geopolitical soft power benefits that Prime Minister Sánchez achieved for Spain. We discuss why European leaders are so beholden to a neoliberal model that prioritises tomorrow's stock market over long-term strategic autonomy. From the presence of 33,000 US troops on German soil to the lack of a 2040 vision, we explore why the "reasonable" ones in the room are actually the ones making the West increasingly fragile. This podcast is an individual project between us, Dario Hasenstab and Balder Hageraats. Click here to send me a text message (include your contact info if you want a reply). The myth is that Henry VIII founded the Church of England because he wanted a divorce. The reality is that his second wife, Anne Boleyn, was using her influence with Henry to foment church reform in England, as on the Continent. That he thanked her by having her executed and marrying again is a story of 'blame and shame' as old as Adam and Eve, and equally as unsettling. Martha Tatarnic, in her new book, Anne Boleyn: Reputation, Revolution, Religion, and the Queen Who Changed History, says 'twas ever thus. In a "man's world," strong women pay a price for their influence, sometimes with their lives. Martha reminds us that, to create the just world for which Anne fought and died, we must be ever vigilant to hear the voices for change, not at the powerful centre, but at the prophetic edges.
