CONTENT HEADS UP: Be enriched by a thoughtfully crafted conversation where sensitive topics related to trauma, torture, and self-loathing are gently woven into a narrative that is ultimately about love. There are no graphic descriptions of torture, just some causes and effects, but we nonetheless recommend that sensitive listeners prioritize their well-being and engage at their own discretion/pace. Also, for those intrigued by the idea of swimming with whales, a friendly reminder to follow safety guidelines and never venture alone into such deep waters.SYNOPSIS:Join us in this episode as we connect with Amber Gray, a masterful Human Rights Psychotherapist and Somatic and Dance/Movement Therapist with over 25 years of experience. Through her profound insights gained from working with survivors of trauma, particularly torture, war, and human rights abuses, Amber shares invaluable lessons and practices.Ali and Amber explore the profound lessons Amber has gleaned from her work with both whales and torture victims, professors and shamans, including the complexities of dissociation, what traditional trauma recovery misses, and the impactful ability to shift one's state of being.Amber's integrative approach, which merges refugee mental health and torture treatment with creative arts, mindfulness, and body-based therapies, offers a unique perspective on healing. The discussion also delves into the innovative Restorative Movement Psychotherapy, a resiliency-based framework co-created by Amber and her clients, designed specifically for trauma survivors in diverse cultural contexts.MORE ALI MEZEY:Website:  https://www.alimezey.comPersonal Geometry® and the Magic of Mat Work Course informationTransgenerational Healing FilmsMORE AMBER GRAY:Website: https://ambergray.comTo be with Amber and the whalesBIO: Amber is a Human Rights Psychotherapist and a Somatic and Dance/Movement Therapist who has worked with survivors of interpersonal, collective  and intergenerational trauma, particularly torture, war, and human rights abuses, for 25 years. Its Never Too Late
Illegal Fireworks! The Generation Gap with Dorothy Wilhelm, Ray Miller Still and Jason Falls

It's Independence Day, the 4th of July is at hand.  Let's talk about illegal fireworks - and other patriotic things. On this edition of  Generation Gap, we pay tribute to the old days of the  4th of July when celebration wasn't complete til somebody blew off one or more appendages. On this show our regulars (Dorothy - Silent Generation ) (Ray - Millennial) (Jason - Gen X) will recall how Independence Day was different in their generations. Since we've been doing this show more than 10 years, we're convinced that there really is a big difference between generations. The fact is, when children and Grandkids come into the picture, it's a wonder anybody is still speaking. That's when we come in. On Generation Gap, we try to add some light to those different groups.  But then that sounds a little dull, so let's add some excitement with Fireworks!! After all, it is July.  Now, fireworks have always been controversial - But we've always loved them.    On today's show, Dorothy will talk about how she discovered an unopened trunk, left behind after her husband's death and full of illegal fireworks. Did you ever try to get rid of a trunkful of illegal fireworks? and Ray tells about the year he inadvertently set his street on fire.  In short, It will be a lot of fun. For the kiddies, there's the story of how big sister Elaine talked her brother into being the rear end of the horse costume she made.  Poor Stephen had a terrible time.  Fun Fact: It turns out that nobody gives treats to the rear end of a horse.   According  to PBS news. The display of pyrotechnics has always  been a big part of Independence Day. Founding Father John Adams saw it coming. Commemoration of America's independence “ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more,” Adams wrote in a letter to his wife, Abigail, dated July 3, 1776. Fireworks were around centuries before America became a nation. The American Pyrotechnics Association says many historians believe fireworks were first developed in the second century B.C. in ancient China by throwing bamboo stalks into fires, causing explosions as the hollow air pockets overheated. By the 15th century, fireworks were widely used for religious festivals and public entertainment in Europe and early U.S. settlers carried on those traditions, the Association said. Faith Lit the Fire of Freedom. Lynette Kittle reminds us that the fight for liberty wasn’t just political—it was deeply spiritual. John Adams and other Founding Fathers understood that freedom begins with God. Influenced by the Great Awakening, their pursuit of independence was undergirded by prayer, Scripture, and a firm belief in God’s providence. From James Madison’s defense of religious liberty to Benjamin Franklin’s reflections on virtue and morality, America’s foundations were built on the understanding that where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

In this episode, I'm joined by one of America's most thoughtful national journalists: Mike Grunwald. You may know him from his work at Time, Politico, or The Washington Post, or from his critically acclaimed books about the Obama administration and the history of the Everglades. He's also now a contributing columnist at the New York Times. But for the purpose of this episode, Mike is here to discuss his third book, We Are Eating the Earth: The Race to Fix Our Food System and Save Our Climate. In this sweeping and deeply reported work, Mike tackles one of the most uncomfortable truths of our time: our global food system, especially animal farming, is a leading driver of climate change, deforestation, wildlife extinction, and more. But rather than simply doomscroll through the apocalypse, We Are Eating the Earth offers a clear-eyed, often witty, and ultimately hopeful exploration of how we might transform our food system to produce more food while using fewer resources. In our conversation, we discuss some of the biggest food and climate myths—like whether organic or so-called “regenerative” agriculture is necessarily better for the planet—as well as Mike's views on what will actually work to slash humanity's footprint on the planet. (Spoiler: eat less meat, waste less food, and use fewer biofuels are among his biggest points.) Mike also clarifies his views on animal welfare, including the welfare of chickens and pigs, and his (lack of) concern about falling fertility rates. It's a wide-ranging conversation that's got something for everyone interested in a future with fewer hungry people and more land rewilded.

Summitul NATO: a meritat lingușirea lui Trump?

Presa internaţională

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 27, 2025 3:28

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 18, 2025 2:31

Laurent remembers vividly his trip to Sofia Bulgaria in winter 2009 when the Russian had cut the gas for Bulgaria during a -15C winter. Russia was already playing hard ball because of (guess what) a financial disagreement with Ukraine. The blackmail lasted 3 weeks, and the poor Bulgarians were cutting the trees from their equivalent of Hyde Park or Central Park not to freeze to death.    Lots of progress has been made since then, and Eastern Europe is an emerging bright spot of development for Renewables. It is not just about Economics but also about Security of Supply. We bring in Dimitar Enchev, Cofounder & CEO Europe at CWP - a global renewable energy company, behind some of the largest projects in Southeast Europe.  CWP has been active since 2007 and developed the largest projects in Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, including Europe's largest onshore wind farm for 10 years – a 600MW project in Romania and has now partnered with Mercuria, one of the largest energy trading houses in the world. They discuss how Eastern Europe felt the largest blunt of Russia's Energy War and how they have been accustomed to living, surviving and thriving with a hostile and aggressive neighbour, always prompt to weaponize energy. Is Europe “bringing a knife to a gunfight” when it comes to countering Russia? We explain how opportunities have risen from this difficult environment and how the decorrelation of wind and solar between the East and West of the Continent, and a continuous integration with the global European Grid creates significant investment opportunities. It is about Transmission, Resilience, Hybridization and digitization.

Though the twice-widowed Catherine's heart was definitely with Thomas Seymour, Henry VIII had other plans for his future and final wife. He took to spending time at his daughter Princess Mary's court, where Catherine was part of the household, and eventually dispatched Seymour on an important - and open duration - diplomatic mission on the Continent. It took some wooing, but Catherine finally accepted the King's marriage proposal, and the couple were wed in July 1543 at Hampton Court Palace. Catherine was an exceptional Queen for him. She was deeply engaged in loving relationships with Henry's children, and her influence went a long way to stitching together some sort of family dynamic after the traumas of his exile of Mary's mother and his murder of Elizabeth's. And she thrived in the role. Catherine is the first woman in England to publish a book in her own name, and stood for the first full-length portrait of an English queen, with a rare and fabulously expensive Turkish rug under her feet, as a king would be presented. She was a reformer at heart who only landed seriously on Henry's bad side once, it seems, but was also enough of a diplomat to smooth things over and, let's be honest, possibly save herself from a bad morning on the Tower Green. Who will defend Europe? The answer should be obvious: Europe should be able to defend itself. Yet, for decades, most of the continent enjoyed a defence holiday, outsourcing protection to the United States while banking an increasingly illusory ‘peace dividend'. Now, after three decades of reducing armed forces and drawing down defence industries, Europe finds itself close to unprotected—while Russia is intent on continuing its war of expansion, and the US is distracted and divided. In Who Will Defend Europe?: An Awakened Russia and a Sleeping Continent (Hurst & Co., 2024), Keir Giles lays out the stark choices facing leaders and societies as they confront the return of war in Europe. He explains how the West's unwillingness to confront Russia has nurtured the threat, and that Putin's ambition puts the whole continent at risk. He assesses the role and deficiencies of NATO as a guarantor of hard security, and whether the EU or coalitions of the willing can fill the gap. After a two-week hiatus, the BFG Podcast is back, and the culture belongs to us as usual. Host Neal Pollack has returned from his anniversary trip to the Continent, and Stephen Garrett was in Europe as well, covering the Cannes Film Festival like he has done every year since before he can remember. This year, Iranian dissident filmmaker Jafar Panahi won the Palme D'Or for his film 'It Was Just An Accident,' the sixth straight year a film distributed by Neon has taken the prize. Neal and Stephen discuss that and then Stephen does a speedy run-through of the festival, covering all the awards winners and other significant films, including the new Spike Lee movie, which he gets in just under the wire as Neal attempts to close out the segment.Nathan Fielder delivered a brilliant six episodes of television with Season 2 of The Rehearsal, which ostensibly is about airplane safety, and is about airplane safety, but is also about so much more. Omar Gallaga appears to talk with Neal about The Rehearsal's narrative sleight-of-hand, which they both love. But there's a curious phenomenon: It's mostly men who jibe with Nathan Fielder's comedy. Neal and Omar, or actors playing them, try to break down this curious situation. In the tradition of Nathan Fielder, they both fail and succeed at the same time.Stephen Garrett is back, to discuss Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning, which he saw at Cannes and which Neal saw at his usual spot, the Alamo Drafthouse Lakeline in Austin. Either way, it's a bombastic edition of the long-running action franchise. Both Neal and Stephen loved the extended submarine action sequence in the middle, and enjoyed a taste of the biplane action scene toward the end, but found the overwrought dialogue tiring, the characters thin at best, and some of the plot laughably stupid. It's about as subtle as a hammer to the face or a nuclear bomb that must be defused in five minutes.Did we mention that the podcast is back? Enjoy!

Donald Trump is on a deportation spree, shipping out refugees from across the globe, often without due process. But somehow, white South African farmers are being welcomed with open arms. Wonder why? (Spoiler: it's racism.) To break down what's really happening in South Africa and where this “white genocide” myth came from, Don sits down with Simon Allison, co-founder of The Continent and one of the smartest voices covering the region. They unpack the dangerous misinformation fueling U.S. immigration policy, what the data actually says (hint: there is NO white genocide), and how South Africa's complex challenges are being twisted to serve far-right fantasies. It's time to separate fact from fear-mongering and call out the hypocrisy for what it is. This episode is brought to you by the Freedom From Religion Foundation.
