We're told stress (looking at you cortisol) is the enemy in midlife—but that's too simple. In the right dose (and with real recovery), stress is good medicine that builds resilience and makes us stronger, in sport, at work, and in life. In this episode, we dive into the “stress that helps” with Dr. Sharon Horesh Bergquist—physician, researcher, and author of The Stress Paradox. We break down hormesis (the just-enough stress plus recovery cycle), how the right doses of stress in the form of training, plant phytochemicals, hot/cold exposure, and smart time-restricted eating activates cellular defense pathways that ultimately rebuild us to be stronger right down to our DNA. We also dive into how to stack stressors without tipping into overload, which is key for active midlife women, so we can live longer, healthier, and happier lives.Sharon Bergquist, MD, is a board-certified physician, researcher, and pioneer in lifestyle medicine. She has led $61M in clinical trials on lifestyle interventions and early biomarkers of chronic disease. Her book, The Stress Paradox: Why You Need Stress to Live Longer, Healthier, and Happier (HarperCollins, Mar 2025), unpacks how daily habits activate the body's regenerative systems. An Emory University faculty physician since 2000, she earned a B.S. in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale, an M.D. from Harvard, and trained in internal medicine at Brigham & Women's. Her TED-Ed lesson has 8M+ views, and she's been featured by Good Morning America, CNN, ABC News, The Wall Street Journal, and NPR. On this week's episode Kathryn and Kristi are joined by ultra runner and pro cyclist Maude Farrell. Maude was the winner of the 2025 Lead Challenge, which is a series of races in Leadville, CO that includes the Leadville Trail 100 MTB, the Leadville Trail 100 Run, and a handful of other races across the summer. Maude talks about the series, including the exciting close finish between her and the woman who finished in second place. Maude describes how she balances training for ultra running and cycling, as well as a full time job, and what keeps her excited about competing. Maude was last on the show in 2022, and since then her life has changed a lot. She was a close friend and roommate of Moriah Wilson who was tragically lost that year. She opens up about the devastation of the loss for the cycling community, and for her personally. Maude also describes how she has learned to live with the grief of losing such a close friend and training partner over the last three years, and what she has learned about herself in the process.Follow Maude on Instagram @maude.tmgLearn More and Register for our Feisty 40+ Strong Retreat: https://www.womensperformance.com/strongretreat Follow us on Instagram:@girlsgonegravel @feisty_media Girls Gone Gravel Website:https://www.girlsgonegravel.com/ Support our Partners:Previnex: Get 15% off your first order with code GIRLSGONEGRAVEL at https://www.previnex.com/ Feisty's Lift Heavy Guide: Get your guide to lifting heavy plus a 4-week training plan at https://www.womensperformance.com/lift-heavy

Playlist:Bright Eyes - First Day of My LifeVillagers - Everything I Am Is YoursBon Iver - For EmmaAmerican Football - The Summer EndsArlo Parks - CarolineClairo - Sexy to SomeoneCharli xcx, The Japanese House - AppleChappell Roan - Naked In ManhattanKwengface, Joy Orbison, Overmono - Freedom 2The Streets - Has It Come to This?KNEECAP, Grian Chatten - Better Way To LivePJ Harvey - Good FortuneSt. Vincent - Broken ManKim Gordon - Murdered OutFuture Islands - For SureDesire - Bizarre Love TriangleBjörk - Declare IndependenceHayley Williams - ParachuteMolly Nilsson - Palestine (Somewhere over the Rainbow) Joanne Robertson, Oliver Coates - GownGalerna - Nessun Dormajoseluis - Fortunaairu - El Sol (CORTE! rework)smerz - FeistyThe Cure - Alone (Four Tet Remix)Nation of Language - In Your HeadArt School Girlfriend - L.Y.A.T.TRobyn - Dancing On My OwnJamie xx, Robyn - LifeOasis - Morning Glory (Unplugged)Florence + The Machine - One Of The GreatsPortugal. Kim Beckinsale and Alina McMaster, both in their mid-50s, race with Mountain Designs Wild Women, along with their teammates Cass Kimlin and Del Lloyd, who are both over 40. The team made history last year by becoming the first all-female team to win the 450 km Legend Expedition Race along Australia's Great Ocean Road, finishing in 73:09:27 and outracing men half their age. They unpack how women-only team chemistry—less ego, more communication, and strategic towing/help—can be a superpower over multi-day, map-and-compass courses on little sleep. They also share how their training has evolved with age (fewer “flog yourself” sessions, sharper intensity, bigger recovery) and how menopause shows up (heat management, sleep shifts, mood) without slowing performance. Kim and Alina are currently at Expedition Canada 2025, getting ready to tackle a 750+ km trek–bike–paddle course starting September 25. On this episode Kathryn is chatting with Southeast Gravel Series co-founders Christy Keely and Nichole Johnson from Greenville, South Carolina. Southeast Gravel is a six event series with events in small towns across North and South Carolina. Before they were event coordinators, Christy and Nicole were teammates on the Kenda racing team in the early 2000s. Although they lived in different parts of the country, they became fast friends and eventually both moved to Greenville to be near each other, and the world-class riding that the area has to offer. The pair discuss how their friendship evolved to starting a multi-race cycling series, and how they have kept the series true to its homegrown roots, supporting small towns in their region. New for 2026 Southeast Gravel will be adding two guided trips to Belgium during the Tour of Flanders and Paris Roubaix spring classics. Eighty percent of us will develop fibroids by age 50–making them an epidemic nobody talks about. Tennis legend Venus Williams, 45, has recently spoken up about the debilitating pain, fatigue, and heavy bleeding she suffered with due to fibroids for literally decades. This week we talk with the doctor who finally helped her find relief, Dr. Taraneh Shirazian, Founder and Director of the Center for Fibroid Care at NYU Langone Health. We shine some much needed light on what fibroids are, common symptoms, how fibroids intersect with perimenopause, menopause, and hormone therapy, and what we can do about them. Dr. Taraneh Shirazian is the Founder and Director of the Center for Fibroid Care at NYU Langone Grossman School of Medicine, a state-of-the-art wellness center that takes a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to treating fibroids, abnormal uterine bleeding, and pelvic pain while prioritizing patients' life goals, including family planning. A minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon and Associate Professor at NYU Langone, she also directs Global Women's Health in OBGYN and at NYU's College of Global Public Health, where she has taught for seven years. She is the Founder and President of Saving Mothers, a nonprofit dedicated to reducing preventable maternal deaths worldwide. Recognized as a leader in women's health and an advocate for patient education and empowerment, Dr. Shirazian specializes in fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, pelvic pain, and abnormal bleeding, and is frequently featured as a women's health expert on major media outlets including CBS, CNN, The Today Show, Good Morning America, Newsweek, and The Wall Street Journal. This week on the show Kathryn and Kristi are chatting with French cyclist, Cécile Lejeune. Cécile grew up in the suburbs of Paris, and got her start in endurance sport in triathlon at age 12. She had quick success in the sport winning national titles in both triathlon and running. This success earned her a running scholarship at Arizona State University. But behind the scenes Cécile was struggling with an eating disorder and battling RED-S, and just one month into her collegiate running career she suffered a stress fracture that ultimately led to her being medically retired from running by the team doctors as ASU. Cécile speaks openly about her struggles with her eating disorder and RED-S, and how she has worked her way back to a more healthy view of fueling and training. She also tells us how leaving running allowed her to find her way into cycling and pursue the sport professionally. After a stint on some UCI road teams in Europe, Cécile moved back to the US and is now part of team CCB. This is her first year in the Life Time Grand Prix, and she is currently in 5th in the overall standings.Follow Cécile on Instagram @cecilejeuneFollow us on Instagram:@girlsgonegravel @feisty_media Girls Gone Gravel Website:https://www.girlsgonegravel.com/ Feisty Media Website:https://livefeisty.com/ Support our Partners:Previnex: Get 15% off your first order with code GIRLSGONEGRAVEL at https://www.previnex.com/ Feisty's Lift Heavy Guide: Get your guide to lifting heavy plus a 4-week training plan at https://www.womensperformance.com/lift-heavy

Buckle up for a trip (pun intended) into the midlife brain. This week we sit down with neuroscientist Dr. Grace Blest-Hopley to connect the dots between cannabinoids, psychedelics, trauma, and the menopause transition. We cover CBD/THC for sleep, anxiety, pain, and inflammation; how the endocannabinoid system works, and how psychedelics like psilocybin act on serotonin pathways, reduce neuroinflammation, and promote neuroplasticity—potentially countering some brain changes seen with estrogen loss. We also dig into trauma (including why PTSD risk and expression differ by sex), the importance of set, setting, and skilled facilitation, who should not use psychedelics, the legal/clinical landscape, and much more. Curious about midlife brain health and whether these therapies are worth exploring? This one's for you.Dr. Grace Blest-Hopley is a neuroscientist with 12 years experience researching cannabis, cannabinoids, and psychedelics. Grace completed her PhD in Neuroscience at King's College London and currently serves as the Chief Scientific Officer at NWPharma Tech. She is the Research Director at Heroic Hearts Project, a charity that supports combat veterans with mental health challenges resulting from trauma and is also the founder of Hystelica, a community focused on understanding women's biology for safe and effective psychedelic use. In addition to her research and professional roles, she has served as an officer in the British Army Reserve. Dr. Blest-Hopley advocates for the therapeutic potential of these substances and strives to advance the field of psychedelic research. At 65, Diane Grim was the oldest woman competing at the Western States 100–widely considered one of the toughest organized trail runs in the United States–this year. It was her first ever 100 miler and she didn't even start running till she was in her 50s, but as she says, every mile, every step is a gift, so why not? She did it. At 10:06 a.m. on May 24th, two-time guest Jeannette McGill stood on top of the world. Jeannette, 52, summited Mount Everest after three years of navigating hot flashes, heavy, erratic periods, joint pain, stubborn injuries, brain fog, and maybe most difficult of all for a high altitude mountaineer–newfound fear that made tasks that once came easily feel overwhelming. Along the way, including two abandoned summit attempts, Jeannette learned that through the power and support of community and with patience, persistence, and practice you can get through even the darkest of tunnels to reach your goals. She shares her journey and the wisdom learned along the way this week.Jeannette McGill is the first South African woman to summit Manaslu and the first-ever South African to climb Dhaulagiri - two of the 14 8,000-meter (26,000 feet) mountains in the world. She is passionate about supporting others to achieve their outdoor goals through her mountain mentoring and leads bespoke adventures in the Australian Alps and Nepal. What is Adam Carter in for this weekend when he moves his oldest daughter into college? Sheletta Brundidge offers her advice and wisdom from experience on that as she joins for a Feisty Friday before Adam dips his toe into discussing a story regarding menopause and women going through that stage going through divorce.
How many times have we heard that weight loss and maintenance is simply “calories in, calories out?” Well, the equation may be rooted in thermodynamics, but the reality is biology, history, hormones, and a whole lot more. This week, endocrinologist and Harvard obesity researcher Dr. Jody Dushay breaks down why this concept is far more complex than the numbers on a food label or how many calories our devices tell us we've burned. From how your body actually absorbs calories to how (or not) it expends them, we explore how and why weight gain and loss anything but straightforward—especially during menopause, when shifting body composition, gut microbiome changes, altered insulin responses, and evolving hormone levels, create a whole new metabolic landscape. As you'll see, your body isn't a calculator—it's a dynamic, adapting system. We also revisit GLP-1 drugs, which are increasingly popular with midlife women, and where they fit in this whole equation (so to speak). Jody Dushay, MD, MMSc, is an endocrinologist at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. She is also the founder and director of Well Powered, a comprehensive wellness and weight management program. Dr Dushay has studied the effect of pharmacotherapies and dietary interventions on body weight for years, including a large single-site study examining the effects of a glucagon-like peptide receptor agonist on body weight in obese women without diabetes. As a triathlete, she has qualified for Kona 3 times and came in 2nd in her age group at the 2020 Ironman World Championship in St George. What's the best word to describe a hard-working freelance copywriter? How about feisty? On the 460th episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast, content strategist and author, Suzanne Bowness, shares the concepts from her new book appropriately called, The Feisty Freelancer. Click the play button below, or scroll down for a full transcript. Stuff to check out: The Feisty Freelancer Website The Feisty Freelancer Book The Copywriter Club Facebook Group The Copywriter Underground Full Transcript: Rob Marsh: What's the best adjective to describe a hardworking, client-pleasing, financially successful copywriter? How about feisty? This is The Copywriter Club Podcast. When it comes to freelancing, this is no one right way to do things. There are thousands of niches to serve. Millions of clients with millions of needs. There are hundreds of ways to find those clients and thousands more ways to solve their problems. But every writer who owns their own business has lots of things in common with others doing the same thing. And if you try to describe them… especially those freelancers who are actually finding clients, doing good work, and earning enough to make a living, well one word that comes to mind is feisty. The feisty freelancer brings energy to their work. They're not afraid to stand up for themselves or the clients they're writing for. And they even might be a little playful. The Feisty Freelancer is also the name of a new book written by content writer and former Think Tank member, Suzanne Bowness. Sue's book is a primer for freelancers of all kinds—not just writers—who want to do more than struggle for scraps. The feisty freelancer has what it takes to succeed. This is Sue's second appearance on the podcast. The first one happened almost three years ago. It's episode #319 if you want to check it out. Given Sue's expertise as a freelancer, it's probably not a coincidence that some of the ideas we talked about then made it into the book. But it's been a while since we had that discussion, so I took the opportunity to ask Sue about the topics she covers in her book. Things like pitching, working with corporate clients, marketing a writing business, strategies for being productive and getting things done. We even talked about whether freelancing is something people should be considering at all today. I think you'll like what she had to share. Before we get to my interview with Sue, this episode is brought to you by The Copywriter Underground. The Underground includes monthly coaching and expert workshops, an accountability group to keep you moving toward your goals, and more than 70 different workshops to help you gain the skills and strategies you need to build your business. Recently I asked a new member why she joined the Underground and she said she did it for the copy reviews. She wanted feedback on her work to help her improve her writing. And where many writing coaches charge as much as $1500 to look at a single sales page, you can get unlimited reviews in The Underground for less than $90 a month. Honestly this just might be the best value in the copywriting world. You can learn more by visiting thecopywriterclub.com/tcu-2. And now, my interview with Sue Bowness… Transcript is underway...

For the longest time, endurance athletes avoided the weight room, afraid unwanted muscles would weigh them down, while strength athletes all but kicked cardio to the curb. Now we know that no matter if you're running an ultra or competing in a CrossFit competition, the right blend of cardio and strength is the secret sauce for success–especially once you hit midlife and menopause. This week, renowned exercise physiologist Dr. Alyssa Olenick dives in on how our hormones impact our muscles, metabolism, and general physiology, and how the right blend of hybrid training can help you stay strong, fit, healthy, and injury free during and beyond the menopause transition. This episode originally dropped on January 8, 2025. Dr. Alyssa Olenick holds a PhD in exercise physiology and is a certified sports nutritionist and CrossFit Level 2 Trainer. Alyssa completed her doctoral training in exercise and human metabolism, sex differences, and menstrual cycle physiology. She also completed a postdoctoral research fellow investigating the areas of menopause and metabolism. As a coach she specializes in the areas of endurance, strength, and hybrid training. She runs her online business ‘Doc Lyss Fitness' and training programs ‘The Lyss Method'. She is also a strength athlete, ultra-marathon runner, and all-around fitness lover who is passionate about educating people on science-based fitness to get them into the gyms and on the roads/trails — or often, doing both at the same time! In 2018 my newspaper died. Well, actually, the emaciated carcass of the Austin American Statesman still had a feeble pulse. But its journalistic voice and soul were gone, stripped out by the notorious financial predators of Gannett, the huge media conglomerate that had recently bought the paper.Happily, though, the Statesman has made a near-miraculous recovery, thanks to a small-but-feisty band of actual journalists who believe in local newspapers. They fought Gannett bosses tenaciously, gaining a voice by forming a union, striking, and finally compelling the giant to sign a union contract. Victory!Uh… not yet. Just months later, Gannett sold the newspaper to Hearst, another massive media conglomerate. This new relationship started well, but soon turned sour when Hearst honchos abruptly refused to honor the paper's contract with the union. Then they began firing employees and jacking around with the newsroom's healthcare and retirement benefits. Adding pettiness to greed, Hearst honchos even refused to let Statesman journalists take a holiday that corporate managers get. What the hell?Bear in mind that Hearst is a phenomenally profitable, $13-billion-a-year, multi-media behemoth. It's CEO, Steven Swartz, pockets millions of dollars a year and lives in luxury. Also, Austin is a booming media market worth gazillions to Hearst! No need to be so pathetically mingy! So, the hardy members of the Austin News Guild are back doing what working people have to do – organizing and mobilizing for a little more justice. “We're no strangers to the petty tactics of corporate elites,” they say, so the guild is relaunching its grassroots campaign to battle the b******s, fight for fairness, and protect local news. On this week's show we are joined by runner-turned-cyclist Caroline Wreszin. The LA based athlete got started on the bike in highschool when an injury sidelined her from running, and she was hooked from the first ride. As a self described competitor, Caroline found her way into gravel racing, and despite her first race being icy cold, she hasn't looked back. Last year Caroline built up her own privateer program and focussed mainly on gravel racing. This year she has her eyes set on some big goals for LA 2028, and has shifted her focus onto the road. Caroline's main sponsor is Skratch Labs, and she shares what she has learned from working with the company as well as how they have helped her on the path to her goals. Post-Gazette insiders Gerry Dulac and Ray Fittipaldo recap practice at Steelers training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe. They detail spirited exchanges between CB Jalen Ramsey and WR Calvin Austin III; TE Jonnu Smith and S Juan Thornhill; and WR DK Metcalf and S Chuck Clark. Does it reflect a new competitive spirit among both receivers and defensive backs? Then they give an update on QB Aaron Rodgers. Have Metcalf and TE Pat Freiermuth emerged as his favorite targets? Why hasn't he been finding Roman Wilson much in the first week of practice, despite a nice play Thursday? Then they look ahead to the Friday Night Lights practice at Latrobe Stadium. Will we see offensive and defensive linemen clashing? Including Broderick Jones, Zach Frazier and Troy Fautanu on the offensive side, and Cam Heyward, Keeanu Benton and Derrick Harmon on the defensive side? Our duo tackles those questions and more.
Alan Saunders and Zachary Smith discuss all things Pittsburgh Steelers. On today's episode, we discuss the DBs bringing the juice to a feisty practice without pads. Juan Thornhill and Jalen Ramsey are known for their trash talk and Thursday was no exception. Thornhill and Jonnu Smith regularly went at it. Aaron Rodgers had a really strong day. Roman Wilson made the play of camp so far, and he will need to show much more of that going forward. How creative will Arthur Smith get, and do we need to adjust the roster math to account for it? On this week's episode we have another interview from Kathryn's time in Girona this spring. Today she is chatting with the Girona-based, American cyclist Morgan Aguirre. Morgan started cycling in 2019 and quickly fell in love with the sport. She joined a team, and started racing on the road in the US. With a fully remote job, Morgan realized that she had a unique opportunity to relocate from Seattle to somewhere that would allow her to ride her bike outside all year long so she made the move to Girona in 2022 to immerse herself in the world of cycling in Europe. Not long after her arrival in Girona she was laid off from her job, but she seized the opportunity to focus more on her riding and started racing gravel. Morgan saw quick success in the gravel racing scene and garnered some support from brands to help make her season possible. At the end of last season she joined Pas Normal, and she talks about what it's like being part of that team. Living and training in Girona has also allowed Morgan to meet and ride with some other big names in the world of gravel, and she tells us about how she has formed friendships with other women in the sport that have helped to guide her along in her career so far, and why it is so important for women to support and lift each other up. How did GNGR Labs' organic, cold-pressed wellness shots become a staple in New York City bodegas and land nationwide distribution at Wegmans? Founder Namik Soltan shares a story powered by purpose, product and unrelenting persistence. The hosts also unpack PepsiCo's unexpected – and gutsy – announcement and explore how excellence fueled Tia Lupita's acquisition. Show notes: 0:35: Shot Hoarders. Hey, Pepsi. You Forget Something? Honoring Tia. Chomping At The Bit. Good Sips. -The hosts open by heaping praise on GNGR Labs' shots, followed by a few laughs and questions about Mike's recent “pen vacation.” The conversation pivots to PepsiCo, earning both some head-scratching and applause for its newly announced prebiotic sub-line under the flagship Pepsi brand. Ray then highlights Coca-Cola's news of a new cola sub-line made with real sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup. Mike puts the spotlight on Feisty, a UK-based protein soda brand, before the team celebrates Vilore Foods' acquisition of Tia Lupita. They commend founder Hector Saldivar for building a culturally authentic and better-for-you Mexican food brand from the ground up. Melissa teases an upcoming Nombase Podcast interview with Chomps' head of merchandising, while Ray announces a live conversation with Chomps CEO Rashid Ali, set for Taste Radio's Chicago meetup on August 14. Jacqui shares her take on Fermenteria's hard water kefir, Mike highlights Kate Farms' high-protein shakes and Corpse Reviver's electrolyte tea, and Melissa rounds things out by introducing a rare and intriguing Japanese plum vinegar. 35:30: Interview: Namik Soltan, Founder & CEO, GNGR Labs – Namik talks about the origins of GNGR Labs spicy ginger shots, which he launched in 2020 at the outset of the pandemic and after a failed attempt at a previous beverage brand. He discusses how a focus on high-quality, undiluted ingredients, potent flavor and authenticity helped them stand out in a crowded market. Namik also explains how he recruited a team to help him initially self-distribute across New York City and emphasized the importance of timing and forming direct relationships with store owners. He also talks about the decision to launch shelf-stable RTD cans and why he loves working with Wegmans even though merchandising is somewhat of a challenge. Namik also explains that while not every partnership worked out, his brand's growth has been organic and steady, driven by innovation and a deep understanding of the New York retail landscape.
