This episode starts by explaining some of the research on the topic. http://www.livescience.com/5351-truth-opposites-attract.html Can you really tell what someone else is thinking or what they want from you? It appears there are some clues to look for to get a better idea of what is going on in their head. Here to explain what the clues are is psychotherapist David J. Lieberman. David is the author of the book Mindreader: The New Science of Deciphering What People Really Think, What They Really Want, and Who They Really Are. (https://amzn.to/3w6R95y). There is something about them that captures our imagination. Here to take us on a tour of the dark and murky world of shipwrecks is Daniel Stone. He is a former staff writer for National Geographic and author of the book Sinkable: Obsession, the Deep Sea, and the Shipwreck of the Titanic (https://amzn.to/3bY84R0). Listen as he reveals the startling number of shipwrecks, where they are, what happens if you discover one and much more. Can you believe that about one out of six people get food poisoning each year? Listen as I explain why people get food poisoning and you will hear the list of the most likely foods that cause it to help you prevent it from happening to you. https://www.cspinet.org/sites/default/files/media/documents/resource/cspi_top_10_fda.pdf Learn more about your ad choices. Daniel Stone explains that today's politically-polarized environment began taking shape way back in the 1980's. Today, he says, we have an increase in what's been described as “affective biases,” in which people move from disagreeing with the ideas of another, to disliking the person themselves, for having these beliefs. It's a dangerous trend, he believes, and among other things, Daniel Stone recommends an “Anti-Polarization Manhattan Project,” and idea that many Blue Sky listeners might want to get behind! The third terrifying volume in the award-winning anthology series of original queer horror.Like the final girl in a slasher film, the LGBTQIA community knows first-hand what it's like to fight for its survival. Beaten and bloodied after an extended chase scene through modern-day politics and the courts, we think we've triumphed and conquered our oppressors. We breathe a little easier knowing our rainbow is ascending in the distance. But—like the indestructible slasher villain—our enemies rise up again and again, as if on a looping third-act jump scare. It's a seemingly never-ending return to battle as the pendulum of progress swings back.In this third volume of the award-winning anthology series, the darkest minds from both the LGBT+ and horror literary communities join forces to bring readers an all-new collection of terrifying tales from that line on the horizon where the dark rainbow rises.Stories by Chad Helder, Hailey Piper, Mathew L. Reyes, A.P. Thayer, J. Daniel Stone, Yah Yah Scholfield, Oliver Nash, Holly Lyn Walrath, Paul Tremblay, Carmilla Voiez, James Cato, Lucy A. Snyder, Maxwell I. Gold, Zachary Rosenberg, Matthew Blain-Hartung, Maryse Meijer, Vincent Kovar, CG Inglis, Craig Laurance Gidney, Dan Coxon, Kaitlin Tremblay, Michael Thomas Ford, Craig Brownlie, Amanda M. Blake, Sara Tantlinger, and Eric LaRocca. Edited by Vince A. Liaguno.Praise for Unspeakable Horror: From the Shadows of the Closet: “There is much to praise in Unspeakable Horror: From the Shadows of the Closet, a sharp, new gay-themed anthology. The 24 entries comprise a sophisticated collection of topnotch tales of terror, most of which could appear in any fright anthology without qualification and suggest the maturing of ‘gay horror' into a viable and solid genre indeed.”—Fangoria MagazinePraise for Unspeakable Horror 2: Abominations of Desire: “If Unspeakable Horror: From the Shadowsof the Closet helped to establish speculative fiction as a mature and important genre for queer fiction when it was published about a decade ago, then Unspeakable Horror 2: Abominations of Desire takes it to new heights and creates an expectation of excellence. Tightly written and edited, free of tropes and mundane writing, these stories propel the queer horror genre to scare us while making a statement about our world and accomplish it with the best of writing possible.”—Lambda Literary ReviewProudly represented by Crystal Lake Publishing—Tales from the Darkest Depths.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. If you follow the conventional wisdom around an influencer's lifespan, you know they start living their best life, then define a strong content niche and build an engaged audience. Then they do lots of brand collabs and make a fair amount of money. Then they diversify and get into creating their own products, services or even a full on media platform. Mr. Beast is an example of the latter. Jake Paul is another influencer turned big star. Lilly Singh went from YouTuber to late night TV star. Technically, you can add Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen, Megan Thee Stallion and many more big celebs to that influencer success journey. The ones who leveraged their influence to launch their own products range from the Khardashians to Michelle Phan. You may remember our chat with Aaron Hefter and Felicia Hershenhorn from July of 2021. They launched Imarais Beauty with Sommer Ray whom I chatted with for an article I wrote around the same time. Another previous episode of Winfluence you may recall is my talk with Daniel Stone and Lou Montemayor from Bandolier Media. That was in June of 2021. Bandolier Media is a multiple time Ad Age Small Agency of the Year award winner that earned a reputation for creating influencers. They launched Just a Construction Guy, Unemployed Wine Guy, Duck Tape Man, the Lawn Whisperer. These half-real, half-advertising creations were intentionally tied to brands and created as Instagrammers and YouTubers … regular old influencers. Just a Construction Guy broke off from his original brand collaboration and just became a regular creator. He's a real guy. And really a construction guy, too. Well, Daniel, Lou, George Ellis and the Bandolier Team is up to a variation on the theme. They've used their content creator thinking and inspiration to launch … a new product. Roasty Buds coffee hit the virtual shelves last fall. It's the world's first spicy coffee. Since the launch Roasty Buds has become one of the premier flavored coffees in the world with variations that include Kinda Spicy, Xtra Spicy and Xxxtra Insane Spicy. They recently added Texas BBQ and Cherry Glaze Smoked BBQ flavored coffee. The idea is just weird enough to get attention, which is Bandolier's pedigree. So the agency that creates influencers has now skipped the influencer and created a product. On this episode of Winfluence, we'll welcome Daniel and Lou back to the program, and add George to the conversation, to explain how Spicy Buds evolved from influencer marketing and where the Bandolier of crazy creative brains are going with influence in 2023. This episode of Winfluence is presented by CIPIO.ai. We help brands solve a couple of big problems. We also have free solutions for creators you need to know about. As we all know, once Hollywood has a winning formula, they're gonna ram it right down all our throats until the cows come home - which means sequels are a time-tested way of making money. Taking a break from politics today, Bill goes under the sea to talk with author Daniel Stone about one of the most searched term in Google pretty much every day, “the Titanic.” Stone provides new insights into the fascination and, really, obsession with the Titanic. There are nearly 3 million shipwrecks in the sea, but there's none with more interest than the Titanic. Plus the latest information on what sunk the ship in the first place. Bill loved the book, Sinkable: Obsession, the Deep Sea, and the Shipwreck of the Titanic and he thinks you will too. The bottom of the ocean seems like an unlikely place to be teeming with life — it's dark, freezing cold, and subject to enormous pressure. And yet, in recent years, scientists have discovered that these depths are a rich ecosystem, boasting more species than you'd find just about anywhere else in the world. Most of the deep ocean remains unexplored, but we're learning more about this mysterious place — including how its inhabitants have adapted to not only survive but thrive in such extreme conditions. On this episode, we hear about some of the secrets that scientists are unlocking about the depths of the sea. We hear stories about some of the weirdest and most interesting creatures living deep in the ocean, one man's epic battle against a very persistent predator, and the chase to uncover centuries-old shipwrecks. Also heard on this week's episode: We listen back to a conversation with marine biologist Erik Cordes— which we conducted when he was 1600 feet deep in a submersible named Alvin. Erik was studying deep-water coral reefs and explained what they can teach us about saving shallow-water reefs. We talk with science writer Sabrina Imbler about their book of essays, “How Far the Light Reaches: A Life in Ten Sea Creatures,” which takes a deep dive into bizarre and amazing sea life, from the octopus that spends four years brooding her eggs, to crabs that grow their own food. Daniel Stone, a senior editor for National Geographic, takes us into the murky world of shipwrecks — and the people who search for them. He explains why some shipwrecks last the test of time (and others don't), what it takes to find a shipwreck, and the lost ships that treasure-hunters continue to seek. His book is “Sinkable: Obsession, the Deep Sea, and the Shipwreck of the Titanic.”
On today's Cool Science Radio Lynn's guests are: former National Geographic writer and journalist (1:02) Daniel Stone, who takes readers on an entertaining adventure through the deep sea, diving into the incredible culture of shipwrecks in human history in "SINKABLE: Obsession, the Deep Sea, and the Shipwreck of the Titanic."Then, best-selling author (23:50) Alexandra Horowitz takes listeners through the first year of a puppy's life in her new book, "The Year Of The Puppy: How Dogs Become Themselves."

Welcome to Crawlspace. In this episode Tim Pilleri & Lance Reenstierna speak with Daniel Stone about his new book, Sinkable. In Sinkable, Daniel spins a fascinating tale of history, science, and obsession, uncovering the untold story of the Titanic not as a ship but as a shipwreck. He explores generations of eccentrics, like American Charles Smith, whose 1914 recovery plan using a synchronized armada of ships bearing electromagnets was complex, convincing, and utterly impossible; Jack Grimm, a Texas oil magnate who fruitlessly dropped a fortune to find the wreck after failing to find Noah's Ark; and the British Doug Woolley, a former pantyhose factory worker who has claimed, since the 1960s, to be the true owner of the Titanic wreckage. Daniel is a national bestselling writer on science, history, and adventure. He's a senior editor for National Geographic and a former White House Correspondent for Newsweek. He's a professor of environmental science at Johns Hopkins University. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/authors/2154901/daniel-stone/ https://www.danielstonebooks.com/ https://www.amazon.com/Sinkable-Obsession-Deep-Shipwreck-Titanic/dp/B09MVCQ74Y https://www.amazon.com/Food-Explorer-Adventures-Globe-Trotting-Transformed/dp/1101990589/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= Follow Daniel on Twitter: https://twitter.com/danenroute Daniel mentions Project Azorian in this interview. There is an old adage that "opposites attract." And you do sometimes see couples that seem to prove the point. Still, just how common is it for very different people to be attracted to each other. This episode begins by explaining some research on the topic. http://www.livescience.com/5351-truth-opposites-attract.html How can you tell what someone else is REALLY thinking or what they REALLY want from you? If you know the clues to look for you can get a better idea of what is going on in their head. Joining me to explain how it works and how you can put it into practice is psychotherapist David J. Lieberman. David is the author of 11 books including Mindreader: The New Science of Deciphering What People Really Think, What They Really Want, and Who They Really Are. (https://amzn.to/3w6R95y). When you hear the word – shipwreck, you likely think of Titanic or maybe pirates and lost treasure. There have been movies, books and songs about shipwrecks presumably because there is something about them that seems to capture our imagination. Joining me to take a look into the dark and murky world of shipwrecks is Daniel Stone. He writes about science, history, and the environment and he is a former staff writer for National Geographic. His latest book is called Sinkable: Obsession, the Deep Sea, and the Shipwreck of the Titanic (https://amzn.to/3bY84R0). Listen as he explains how many shipwrecks there are, where they are, what happens if you discover one and much more. About one out of six people get food poisoning each year and it is always worse in summer. Listen as I explain why, and I will reveal the list of the most likely foods that cause food poisoning to help you prevent it from happening. https://www.cspinet.org/sites/default/files/media/documents/resource/cspi_top_10_fda.pdf PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! Do you have a dream that hasn't yet been achieved? Are you fascinated with the sinking of the Titanic? If so on either account, you aren't alone. The Titanic's demise is one of the most famous shipwreck stories that has been told over and over again by survivors, and dreaming? Well, that's natural. We all want better. So how do these two ideas mesh? While some dreamt of riches bringing the ship back to the surface, it took decades to find the wreck. Not one or two, but many people had grand ideas of how to locate and preserve the ship. The stories of the Titanic and MANY other shipwrecks are documented in today's guest's new book. Daniel Stone has been fascinated by shipwrecks since he was a kid. He's here today to share shocking facts about shipwrecks and how several people have made it their life's work to find and preserve the Titanic. In our headline segment, we're talking about active vs passive investing. Is one better than the other and why the recent push toward active management? Joe and OG talk about what steps you should take with your own portfolio. We also answer Sheri's question about taking social security benefits. And we can't leave Doug out so he'll share his trivia. The Friday Newsletter | Daily Gardener Community Historical Events 1727 Birth of Michel Adanson, French botanist and naturalist. He created the first natural classification of flowering plants. Although today we think mainly of Darwin and Linnaeus when it comes to classification, these two men and others stood on the shoulders of Michel Adanson. The great botanist Jussieu ("Juice You") adopted Michel's methodology to create his masterpiece called Genera Plantarum (1789). Michel was the first person to question the stability of species. When he saw breaks or deviations in nature, he came up with a word for it: mutation. Linnaeus honored Michel's contributions with the genus Adansonia, which features the spectacularly unique Baobab ("BOW-bab") trees of Africa, Australia, and Madagascar. The Baobab tree (books about this topic) has a Seussical quality, and it is one of the most massive trees in the world. They are called "The Queens of the Forest" or "The Roots of the Sky in Africa." The last name refers to a legend that tells how long ago, in a fit of anger, the devil pulled the Baobab tree out of the ground, only to shove it back into the earth upside down - leaving its roots shooting up into the air. The story offers the perfect description of how the trees look. The enormous trunks of the Baobab tree can store up to 32,000 gallons of water. The outer bark is about 6 inches thick, but the cavity is spongy and vascular. This is why animals, like elephants, chew the bark during the dry seasons. Carbon dating indicates that Baobabs may live to be 3,000 years old. And here's a fun fact: the cooking ingredient Cream of Tartar was initially made from Baobab seed pulp. Today, it is mainly sourced as a by-product of making wine. 1775 Birth of Francis Cabot Lowell (books about this person), American industrialist and anthropologist. The first planned company town - the city of Lowell, Massachusetts, is named in his honor. One of the fathers of the Industrial Revolution in America, Francis once wrote, One lifetime is never enough to accomplish one's horticultural goals. If a garden is a site for the imagination, how can we be very far from the beginning? 1869 Birth of David Fairchild (books about this person), American botanist. In terms of plant exploration, David was single-handedly responsible for introducing more than 200,000 plants to the United States, including pistachios, kale, mangoes, dates, nectarines, soybeans, and flowering cherries. In 2019, David's incredible adventures and contributions intrigued author Daniel Stone so much that he wrote a magnificent biography of David called The Food Explorer: The True Adventures of the Globe-Trotting Botanist Who Transformed What America Eats. David also brought the Avocado to America. David loved the Avocado and wrote, The avocado is a food without rival among the fruits, the veritable fruit of paradise. In 1905, David married Mary Ann Bell; his father-in-law was none other than Alexander Graham Bell - who, along with his wife, also enjoyed gardening. Today the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables is filled with many of the plants David collected, and of course, the garden is named in David's honor. In The World Was My Garden: Travels Of A Plant Explorer (1938), David wrote, The human mind prefers something which it can recognize to something for which it has no name, and, whereas thousands of persons carry field glasses to bring horses, ships, or steeples close to them, only a few carry even the simplest pocket microscope. Yet a small microscope will reveal wonders a thousand times more thrilling than anything which Alice saw behind the looking-glass. 1940 Birth of Steven Vogel, American biomechanics researcher and the James B. Duke professor in the Department of Biology at Duke University. In The Life of a Leaf (2012), Steven wrote, I'm not even much of a gardener—my contribution to the family garden consists mainly of compost. Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation The Fine Art of Paper Flowers by Tiffanie Turner This book came out in 2017, and the subtitle is A Guide to Making Beautiful and Lifelike Botanicals. When it comes to making permanent arrangements and using elements like paper flowers, there is no better teacher than Tiffany Turner. By the way, this book has the most beautiful cover. Tiffany is a bit of a polymath - she's multitalented. She's licensed as a California architect. She's a fine art instructor and an artist in her own right. Her work has been featured all over the country. Tiffany typically explores nature in her work, and she creates botanical specimens that can be staggeringly large or very, very, very tiny. Now, Tiffany was raised in the woods of New Hampshire. But, for the past twenty years, she's made San Francisco her home, and that's where she and her husband are raising their two children. There's no doubt her children have delighted in their mother's beautiful, beautiful work. There's something about Tiffany's work that reminds me a bit of Mary Delany - the famous crate paper artist from the 1700s. I think Mary would really delight in what Tiffany can do with paper, and I especially love what Publishers Weeklysaid about Tiffany's book. They wrote, Under the mantra 'You must make what you see, not what you think you see,' this book guides artisans to astonishing results. Tiffany walks you through how to make these awe-inspiring creations, but the most crucial element is how to start — how to approach each floral subject — whether you're talking about a poppy or a rose, or a peony. Each flower has a little bit of a different approach. Tiffany's book is a fantastic resource because it's an in-depth instructional guide where Tiffany leaves nothing to chance and lays it all out on the table. So even if you are a complete novice in crafts and working with an element like crate paper, you will quickly be put at ease by all of Tiffany's encouragement and simple, straightforward instructions. Now, one of the ways I love to use this book is whenever my daughter says that she and her friends want to do something - they're bored, but they have no idea what to do. Crate paper flowers are enjoyable to do with a small group of friends. They're not very messy. You can start and stop the project at any time. And generally, by the time the gathering is over, people are leaving with flowers in their hands - and that's what you want. You don't want an overwhelming project that can't be finished in a sitting. So I love this book. This is one of my go-to resources for botanical crafting. This book has been out for five years, and it's still one of the very, very best resources for paper flowers. This book is 264 pages of paper, crafting gift decorating, flower arranging, and more from your trusty guide: Tiffany Turner. You can get a copy of The Fine Art of Paper Flowers by Tiffanie Turner and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for around $15. So fun. Botanic Spark 2020 On this day, Female First shared an article about Dame Helen Mirren (books about this person), English actor. Speaking to Yours magazine, she shared: I love to spend time in my garden. If I have a few free hours I love to dig around in the dirt. It's so calming, worthwhile and a really good way of keeping those dark dragons away which I do have at times. Gardens and green spaces are vital for people and the planet. ...They should teach it in schools. ...Gardening is learning, learning, learning. That's part of the fun of it. You are always learning." It comes after the 74-year-old actress revealed she is a pomegranate farmer and harvests the fruits at her farm in Salento, Italy. She explained: Apart from acting, my other job is that of a pomegranate farmer. My husband I have planted over 400 pomegranate trees and we're producing juice for the market. The juice is delicious. Our little company is still in the early stages but we want to sell our juice in Italy and abroad. ...The first time I saw the full moon rising from the sea and shining on my pomegranates, I burst into tears. Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

On this episode, we talked about the nature of the "conscious dream" and the meaning of reality. Daniel shared some tips on how to connect with the spiritual realm and experience a spiritual awakening that leaves you feeling connected with the divine world and fulfilled in the purpose of your own soul. Daniel shared the healing power of how to connect with the consciousness of the planet. According to Daniel, it is important to show respect to the planetary forces and universal mind to reflect that this conscious being is alive, loving, and full of wonder. By respecting our world and connecting with these spiritual forces beyond our knowledge, we live in respect and gratitude in a way that will fulfill ourselves at a deeper level. Check it out: Shamanic healing and experience is a profound method for a person to experience spiritual awakening. Although these sorts of "direct experience" can oftentimes lead to a person having a profound and very "real" experience of the divine, they are by no means the only method for having these experiences. In fact, some of my more incredibly and unexplainable spiritual experiences have been completely sober. It is not uncommon for a person to have trouble fitting together the pieces of a psychedelic experience whereas the sober experience can be a bit easier to actually apply, implement, and piece together into one's own life. That being said, I have certainly had some life changing experiences on psychedelic plants. Indeed, many of the most important days of my life were brought about by the use of psychedelic substances. When I first realized I was gay, it was through the use of psychedelic mushrooms. These experiences have shaped and molded me into the person that I am today and their power and influence cannot be discounted. However, the importance of the sober experience with the divine also cannot be emphasized enough. In my opinion, a person should open their minds to the experience of all that life has to offer and rely on their own intuition and experience to navigate through the wide spectrum of spiritual awakening and development. However, a guide such as a shaman can certainly help. Want to watch the YouTube version? Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8kmZrSAzq8
Minimalism And The Digital Nomad Lifestyle "Jobs of the Future" might look nothing like a traditional 9-5 job. In fact, as mentioned above, it is becoming far more common for folks to ditch the cubicle in favor of remote work from home or a digital nomad lifestyle of moving around between places. The movement towards minimalism is being embraced by the millennial culture as younger folks seek to downsize their life potentially into one suitcase or backpack they can use to travel the world and have more meaningful experiences. Truly, jobs of the future could have a pre-requisite of sorts that requires them to be workable from anywhere in the world using just a laptop. In the 21st century, more folks are interested in minimalism and the freedom of a digital nomad lifestyle. Minimalism often involves dramatically reducing the amount of stuff you have in your life in favor of an easier and less hectic lifestyle. Oftentimes, folks engaging in minimalism will travel the world and live a “backpack” life or “van-dwelling” life but sometimes the person simply enjoys a de-cluttered home that has only the immediate possessions needed to live day-to-day. In addition to the practical side of minimalism, there is also a spiritual element of seeking to de-clutter the mind and spirit via eliminating unessential objects in your daily life. There is also a train of thought that minimalism is healthier for the environment because we effectively reduce the amount of waste and products we introduce into the natural world. For many people, this sort of lifestyle is massively appealing for the sake of providing more freedom and a healthier karmic relationship with the world in general. As discussed in this interview with Daniel Stone, when we respect the world and create a more meaningful existence and relationship with the planet, we enter into a more abundant state of being because we have successfully honored the environment and collective consciousness in which we find ourselves existing. Conni Biesalski is a minimalist and digital nomad who helps others understand and implement this lifestyle. She is an advocate for holistic living, Yoga, a vegan lifestyle, and the digital nomad lifestyle. On this episode of the Beyond Homo Sapien show Conni and I discuss minimalism and how to get started while also exploring the future of the human lifestyle. When it comes to successfully navigating through potential "jobs of the future", folks like Conni are leading our species towards a healthier relationship with the planet, ourselves, and our fellow humans. Digital nomad lifestyle and minimalism are going to be increasingly popular as the doors open to further travel experiences. The millennial generation is more interested in experience vs. having a lot of “things”… Minimalism could very well become much more mainstream as folks begin to de-clutter their lives, their minds, and explore the world rather than flock to a more “traditional” 9-5 life. Minimalism is more than just a reduction of physical clutter. In this episode, Conni shared that there is a deeply spiritual aspect of the minimalism lifestyle that centers around the de-cluttering of internal junk. For example, have you ever known someone who has a really messy home full of old junk and clutter? From what I've experienced, these are often the same folks who have a lot of internal junk and clutter that they're avoiding cleaning. A messy attic or closet that hasn't been cleaned in years oftentimes reflects a messy room in your head or heart that has yet to be totally cleaned out. Jobs of the future that center around a minimalist lifestyle could be a healthy addition to our culture. By allowing folks to pursue a digital nomad lifestyle that encourages a culture of minimalism and a movement towards decreasing clutter could be incredibly beneficial for mental health, spiritual development, personal achievement, and much more. By furthering and encouraging this development, we do a load of good for our fellow human beings as they go through their experience of life. Wnat to learn more about Conni? Spiritual growth is the realm of the shaman. This individual is able to facilitate healing, ritual, ceremony, and general advice relating a person's spiritual journey and awakening here in this world. In the same way that the smith might forge metal and into a more specific creation, the shaman is able to commune with the spiritual realm in order to alchemize a person's soul power into something more profound and aware for that specific individual. Spiritual awakening can often be facilitated in some instances by a shaman through use of specific ritual. These ceremonies are designed in a specific method so as to help the individual experience a more profound and real connection with their spiritual body. These ceremonies are often associated with psychedelic plants but there is no requirement for that to necessarily be the case. In fact, some of the most powerful rituals are meant to be completed sober, without the use of any substance. On this episode of the Beyond Homo Sapien show, I talk to Ariana Ruiz about her recent experience in a "Shamanic Death Ritual". Ari is an initiated and trained Toltec shaman who has a wealth of experience and knowledge in the ancient ceremonies of this tradition. On this show, we chat about how rituals such as a death ritual can be used to aid in a person's spiritual awakening and overall spiritual growth. On this episode, Ari shares her powerful experience with a Shamanic Death Ritual. If you are looking to explore the possibility of having a similar experience, Ari recommends working with Daniel Stone at the Center of the Conscious Dream. The Bickertonite movement continues many of the ecstatic religious experiences of the Kirtland Era. Dr. Daniel Stone will tell us more about speaking in tongues. Does it pre-date the modern Pentecostal Church movement? We'll learn more about this in our final segment with Dr. Daniel Stone, check out our conversation… https://youtu.be/tn8Ffe8xb3s GT: The other thing that I wanted to ask, was John [Hamer] said that Bickertonite meetings are very lively. Daniel: Yes, they very much can be. GT: In your book, there's a lot of speaking in tongues, and interpreting tongues. I was like, do they still do that today? Daniel: Yes. Not like they did in Bickerton's day. I will say it has tampered down quite a bit, but we do still see it like with any charismatic gift. We also told a story that turns out not to be true regarding an Italian Book of Mormon story and Vinzenzo di Francesca. (It was a fun story--I wish it was true!) Here is the short part of the video describing Vincenzo's experience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hsF4fRzL44 I'd like to thank Daniel for talking with us. Don't forget to buy his book! Wikipedia has some interesting background, including his correspondence with Heber J. Grant! And if you missed any part of our interview, please check them out! The Bickertonites were the first church to publish the Book of Mormon in Italian. Dr. Daniel Stone is the first person to write about William Bickerton, the first prophet of the Bickertonite Church. Some LDS Scholars got in trouble for writing true, but unflattering history. I'll ask Dr. Daniel Stone how he navigated those tricky waters in his church. https://youtu.be/gpsklYqEcgc Daniel: I wrote a proposal to the church and to the church historian and to the Twelve asking that I can write an objective history and I specifically said that. I was approved to do that under the umbrella of the church because I don't think most of the people in the church actually knew.... I was able to get access to all these documents, which I think as far as I know no one has ever done before. So, it was really fun. I wrote the first five chapters of the book. I gave it to the church historian and the Twelve. They never gave me a clear answer as to yes or no. I will say I can kind of understand because as apostles or as leaders of the church, you as leadership of the church, none of them are historians, right? I am. The object of all has apostles in any one person of the Mormon movement is to promote faith, right? And history can sometimes be like that, so there might be some things. The big issue is the Cadman-Bickerton feud. They flat out said, I actually heard from a couple of them saying that's the big issue that they were afraid of is the Cadman-Bickerton feud. ... But what ended up happening was, is I just asked the general historian, I said, "Can I go independent with this?" He said yes. GT: Because originally you were going to have it published by the church. Daniel: Potentially. Yes. That was, that was what I had understood the agreement to be. And what ended up happening was there was some kind of miscommunication. I had a talk with some of the apostles and we basically came to the idea of this is a miscommunication. We never had you sign anything. So it's not like we can say don't publish it. And the Bickertonites to their credit are very democratic in a lot of senses. Even though some of the leadership does not support, I'm assuming, what I'm doing, my membership was never in danger. They might not necessarily agree with some of what I'm saying. And they flat out said, some of them had said, "We don't agree with some of your interpretations. We think you're speculative." My argument nicely is, "You have never read the documentation. I have." I'm not trying to be like, oh look at me, I know, but I'm just like, no, read the documents for yourself because nobody has ever really done this. And then we can have a discussion, but just to flat out say it's speculative. I'm like, well all history has that. My argument is, I have all footnotes. People can look at it, people can check my sources. No book is perfect, but I tried really hard. It really is a great book and I encourage you to buy it! Following a bitter schism, Dr. Daniel Stone tells how the two Bickertonite factions reunited. It was interesting to find out how the LDS Church reacted when they learned of the Bickertonite schism. https://youtu.be/MNW2xqI9zq0 Daniel: John Taylor hears about the Bickertonites and hears about how they're split and basically sends missionaries down the line. They send missionaries to St John and to Pennsylvania to convert the Bickertonites, and they're very successful at doing that. I want to mind you. They convert a lot of Bickertonites. GT: Even though they are polygamists? Because John Taylor was definitely a polygamist. Daniel: Yep! You have several of the missionaries going, both the Pennsylvania and going to Kansas convincing Bickertonites who were strongly opposed to polygamy, that polygamy was a true revelation. It goes to show you how you could have really staunch people. It goes to show you how bad the split really hurt the Bickertonite movement. They literally saw it in shambles. The split lasted 22 years. How did they combine? Daniel: William Bickerton is in his late eighties. William Bickerton knows that he's going to die soon. His brother had even died that I believe was younger than him, if I remember correctly. So, he sends a friendly face that was a member of Bickerton's schism, but then eventually joins Cadman. His name was Alexander Cherry and William Cadman sends Alexander Cherry to St. John, Kansas to talk with William Bickerton in his late eighties to say, okay, here are the terms. And it's a friendlier face than William Cadman, because William Cadman did meet with William Bickerton before that and they couldn't come to terms. So, Alexander Cherry presents William Bickerton with an offer. He says basically, "Listen. If you don't be a prophet anymore, don't recognize yourself as a prophet. You're not the leader of the church anymore, but you can still hold a priesthood position as an elder, we will bring all of your members in our church and we can all just join as one. Because both churches excommunicated each other. They basically said, "We'll forget that that even happened." And they basically said, "If you forgive us, we'll forgive you." That was the terms. And William Bickerton in his last to age had two choices. You could either die right, being not an adulterer in holding onto his pride and the church is split in two, or he could help the movement which was already happening and bring the church together and he chooses the latter. He says he steps down. He is no longer considered a prophet. He's considered an elder and the church comes back together. It's that easy. Nobody's rebaptized. It just comes back, and they basically forget everything, and he literally thinks the past is forgotten. Check out our other conversations with Daniel! Comments? Following a 22 year schism, William Bickerton stepped down as leader and prophet to heal the Bickertonite schism in his church. 202: Ousting a Prophet (Stone) 201: False Prophecies Are Possible! William Bickerton eventually lost control of the church he started. How did his apostles oust the prophet. Are there parallels with LDS Church succession? Dr. Daniel Stone tells us. https://youtu.be/P_GEVpDBPSg Daniel: You basically had the Bickertonite group that is supporting Bickerton. The people that are detractors of Bickerton are excommunicating everybody from the Bickertonite group because they're saying, well, if you support Bickerton, you're an apostate. And then William Cadman actually held an ad hoc court within the community to prove that William Bickerton was an adulterer. He really believed the evidence. He acts as prosecutor for eight hours calling witnesses from the community and the jury is made up of all non-Bickertonites and he purposely did that to prove to the community once and for all. Because if he could get the community as a whole on his side, then he knows that the church can then continue forward and William Cadman will be the leader. He believes he will be the leader because he's the president of the Twelve. And what ends up happening is William Cadman does not get the verdict that he wants. I found it really interesting that the President of the Quorum of Twelve took over leadership, just like Brigham Young did in the LDS Church. Check out the conversation, and don't forget to check out our other segments with Daniel…. William Bickerton was accused of adultery and a faction in the east ousted him as leader. Can a prophet make mistakes, even in prophecy and revelation? William Bickerton, a prophet in the Church of Jesus Christ said yes, prophets make mistakes. Dr. Daniel Stone will give us more information in this great conversation. https://youtu.be/LGnbeNclSX4 Daniel: William Bickerton especially towards the end of his life, recognized that prophets were fallible, even I believe it was during the Civil War. ... So very early on his people, including him, can even recognize that men can make mistakes even though they're considered a prophet of God. It is possible that a prophet can false prophesy. GT: Wow, that's very interesting. Daniel: And that could just be from their own wants and desires. And even people in my tradition, I brought this up during a men's class one time that I was teaching, and I tried to bring it up, when we were talking about the gift of prophecy. I said, there are instances in the scriptures were prophets get it wrong, but they're still called prophets. I believe Nathan is one of them. I'd have to look. There was examples and I bring up William Bickerton for one of them. I personally believe Joseph Smith. I am a believer, so I'm going to take my academic hat off for a second and say, I believe Joseph Smith was a prophet of God. Because I have to believe in the Book of Mormon, which I do, to say that. But I think Joseph Smith might have let his mind get to certain things. And that's okay because we read prophets in the Old Testament do that sometimes, quite often. Do you agree? Is it possible for a prophet to make a mistake in revelation and still be a prophet? William Bickerton, prophet of Church of Jesus Christ in Monongahela, PA said prophet make mistakes, even in revelation. Dr. Daniel Stone tells more! Check out our conversation, as well as our other conversation with Dr. Daniel Stone! 200: Civil War Prophecy Leads to Black Ordination (Stone) 199: Biblical Support to Ordain Women (Stone) 198: Bickerton Becomes Prophet (Stone) 197: Sidney's Church Falls Apart (Stone) 196: Rigdon/Spalding Manuscript Theory (Stone)
[paypal-donation] In our next conversation with Dr. Daniel Stone, we will discuss the similarities and differences between Bickertonite and Brighamite priesthood. I was surprised to learn that they have been ordaining women since the 1860s! https://youtu.be/rUlMIBzHEjA Daniel: This is because of Joseph Smith Civil War prophecy, he's really seeing it. This is the approaching of the end times. Jesus Christ is coming back. This is the beginning of the apocalypse and eventually according to Joseph Smith's Civil War prophecy, it's going to encompass the whole earth, right? So, he has to ordain a Quorum of Twelve to kind of institute that fervent missionary effort to kind of bring people in because of the approaching calamities. And in 1863, a year after, they ordain a deaconess. And what's interesting is because you kind of see as they're ordaining deaconesses, they're also saying, well we need to have midwives in the church too. That's really important. So, you're starting to see a real emphasis on women ministering to the church because they really believe the end times are coming. It's going to get more and more serious and worse. So, midwives back then were much more trusted than doctors. So, they're kind of thinking pragmatically, okay, well if we're in destruction and there's no help for anything, we want to have midwives to help care for the wounded or people that are sick or people who are giving birth. Obviously, they were very trusted. So, they're trying to ordain deaconesses as a holy office, but calling or wanting to have midwives in the church to train them for the hopes of helping to minister to the church as well. It turns out they ordain women because of a biblical precedent! William Bickerton is very much a Christian primitivist or a Christian restorationist like Joseph Smith. He's trying to look at the scriptures literally. So, they get the idea from deaconess because of Phoebe and some of the others that are mentioned, you know, where they use that Greek word Diakonia I believe it is, where basically means deaconess. So, they are a member of the ministry. So, they're looking at the scriptures and they're really scrutinizing, and they see prophetesses in the scriptures. You know, even in the New Testament there were prophetesses. So, he's looking at this thing. Women can have this power of the Holy Ghost to move. And if they see that women were, you know, even though brief, brief mentions of it in the New Testament Check out our conversation…. William Bickerton noticed Phoebe was a deaconess in the Bible and instituted that office in the 1860s. Following the collapse of Sidney Rigdon's church, people looked to William Bickerton to lead the flock. Dr. Daniel Stone tells us more details about William Bickerton's prophetic vision and call to become prophet of a new church with a Book of Mormon foundation. https://youtu.be/etAjNpfVVp0 Daniel: [Bickerton] says that he was carried away in the spirit and placed on the highest mountain on the earth, he said. In one of the accounts it says that there was just room enough for him to stand on this mountain, and he's basically told and shown, "Here you are in this mountain. You're doing everything right." You kind of get the sense that he feels like God's telling him “You're on the right track. Stay where you are. Keep going. Keep doing what you're doing, but if you leave this path that I've put you on, you're going to fall and tumble.” And William Bickerton sees this chasm below. And he says that the Lord told him if he didn't keep doing what he was doing, that he would fall into the chasm. And he said that the sight was awful at one part. In another account, he says that he would fall and be torn into bits. So, he saw and he felt that he didn't have any other choice other than to stay on this path because he didn't want to fall down that way. So, he starts preaching by himself. Check out our conversation, as well as our other conversations with Dr. Daniel Stone! William Bickerton had a vision of a chasm where God told him to lead a new church on the foundation of the Book of Mormon. 197: Sidney's Church Falls Apart 196: Rigdon/Spalding Manuscript Theory
