Davey Crocket, Jim Bowie, and Plain Ol' Joe – accompanied by Porter Rockwell – spend some time befriending and mounting horned herbivores, then set off to collect all the canons. Exploring the last mesa, the group is beset by winged creatures from above. When, at last, the group has gotten what they came for, Old Koot'naheen is summoned with a blow from their whistle. Unfortunately, Ol' Kooter is not the only one drawn by the sound. Can the temporally-transposed team win their last battle in the Valley of the Poh? If so, the historic Siege of the Alamo still awaits them. What effect will its outcome have on the future? Only time will tell.

In August of 1857, a wagon train of travelers from Missouri and Arkansas rolls into Utah Territory. It's called the Baker-Fancher party and it's headed for California. The group camps in a high mountain valley called Mountain Meadows in southern Utah Territory, but Mormon settlers in the area believe the emigrants are more than just travelers. The Mormons believe the Baker-Fancher party is connected to the approaching U.S. Army column. As fear and suspicion grow, a Mormon militia attacks the travelers in a tragic event called the Mountain Meadows Massacre. New church leader Brigham Young declares that the Saints must go west to find a place where they can worship in peace. Porter Rockwell becomes the lead scout for the great exodus to Utah Territory. The Saints build Salt Lake City and navigate tensions with local Native American tribes. Rockwell acts as a guide for U.S. Army troops and helps establish the Brigham Young's mail route through the territory. In 1857, Rockwell learns news of a major threat to the LDS church: President James Buchanan is sending 2,500 soldiers and a new governor to take over Utah Territory. The perceived invasion sets the stage for one of the darkest chapters in the history of the American West. Orrin Porter Rockwell is born into an era of religious fervor in the eastern United States. His family soon becomes close with the Smith family, and Porter becomes the youngest convert to Joseph Smith's new religious movement, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The Saints immediately meet resistance to their ideology and they move west to Ohio and then Missouri. In Missouri, they begin years of conflict with the locals. Gerrit and Richard continue discussing John C. Bennett's role in claiming Joseph Smith ordered Porter Rockwell to murder Boggs and put up a reward for it. They examine what Joseph did say about Boggs and then discuss the California settlement of both the Saints and Boggs and the likely origin of the rumored prophecy...Gerrit can't help himself and mentions the Compromise of 1850 and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and goes on a tangent about a scheme to make a Mega Giant California when it first became a state. In August of 1857, Brigham Young delivered a speech to the saints assembled in the Tabernacle. As he contemplated the Army force marching closer to the home of the Saints, he bitterly remembered how, over the last he and the Latter-day Saints, over the last 20 years, had been brutally victimized by armed bands, from Ohio to Missouri to Illinois. He saw the approach of federal troops as simply the latest armed force to set out to destroy them. But he decided that this time would be different. He roared from the pulpit: "Let it be treason or not treason . . . . The Lord God Almighty and the Elders of Israel being our helpers, they shall not come into this territory. I will fight them and I will fight all hell rather than tamely submit to such outrageous wrong and oppression." This episode covers: The strategy the Latter-day Saints adopted to resist Johnston's ArmyDaniel H. Joseph's Smith's gathering at the Mansion House in Nauvoo, Illinois on the last Christmas of his life is discussed. I discuss my travels to that place, as well as to the jail at Carthage where Joseph, and his brother Hyrum were killed. Joseph Smith and Porter Rockwell and their final resting places are talked about in this special Christmas episode as well.
In part 2 of our discussion of the Council of Fifty and the lost teachings found in the minute books of that organization, we discuss some of the harsh feelings the Saints felt after Joseph's murder. The continued mob violence against the Saints in 1845 further alienated them from the United States and gave them greater resolve to leave the nation. One of the council members featured in this discussion is Porter Rockwell, and some of the things he has to say in these council meetings. On September 16th, 1844, Frank Worrell was a man on a mission. Flanked by a group of friends, Worrell galloped out of Carthage, Illinois on the main road to Nauvoo. Worrell had enough of the Jack Mormon Backenstos (the term meant a person friendly towards the Mormons though not a Mormon himself). Worrell believed that, if they were ever going to drive the Mormon people from Illinois, Backenstos had to die. Worrell's mission? Chase down the sheriff and shoot him dead before he could reach the safety Nauvoo. On this episode, we discuss Worrell's background as the commander of the Carthage Greys, the guard force at the Carthage Jail. We explain Worrell's complicity in the murder and the later cover-up at the trial of the alleged killers. Then, we review the spree of anti-Mormon burnings that started in September 1845 from the perspective of William Draper, one of the victims of the mob violence. To learn more about the information in this episode, please check out Dallin H. Oaks & Marvin S. Hill, Carthage Conspiracy: The Trial of the Accused Assassins of Joseph Smith (1979). This episode concludes the story of "The Man Who Shot Frank Worrell."On September 16th, 1844, Frank Worrell was a man on a mission. On this episode, we discuss the increase of mob violence against non-Mormons who the Anti-Mormons (such as Worrell) viewed as too closely aligned with the Mormon cause. This began with the assault on Sheriff Minor Deming, who ultimately shot and killed his attacker, Samuel Marshall, on the steps of the Carthage Courthouse. Deming resigned as sheriff pending his trial, and Jacob Backenstos won election as the Sheriff of Hancock County. But Backenstos would find himself riding for his life to escape a possee, led by Frank Worrell. As luck would have it, this 2-mile chase led them both to a small group of Mormon refugees, under the escort of Porter Rockwell. Orrin isn't too well known a name outside of Mormondom, but if you're Mormon and don't know who he is, you're fucking up your religion. Also if I had known about this psychopath earlier I wouldn't have made so many golden plates and magic underwear jokes about this kooky religion, cuz Orrin was a badass. Gotta sift through some tall tales to get the truth, but still a bad dude. Enjoy!
On this episode, tensions are REALLY high between the Mormons and anti-Mormons in Nauvoo and Carthage respectively. We begin with John Taylor telling us about his meeting with Governor Thomas Ford about the Mormon side of the conflict. Because Ford was surrounded by enemies of the church as Taylor was telling the story, with affidavits included, the men scarcely let Taylor get a word out without calling what he said a “God damned lie”. Taylor returns to Nauvoo carrying Ford’s letter to Joseph Smith, which told Jo to surrender to arrest or the militia would be in Nauvoo before nightfall. Jo resolves to run away with his brother, Hyrum, and his closest advisor, Willard Richards, along with his hitman, Porter Rockwell. They cross the Mississippi under the cover of night and reach the home of a Mormon outside Nauvoo where they make camp for their journey to the “Great Basin” beyond the “Rocky Mountains”. The arresting posse of 30 men arrive in Nauvoo that morning to arrest Joseph and Hyrum, only to return to Carthage empty-handed, forcing Governor Ford’s hand to call the militia into Nauvoo to search for the fugitives. On this episode, we take the opportunity to examine an enigmatic figure of Nauvoo Mormon history, Joseph H. Jackson. He visited the settlement in late 1842 where he was branded a Missouri spy and a Danite attempted to assassinate him. From that point forward he vowed revenge on the man responsible for nearly taking his life, Joseph Smith. Jackson ingratiated himself into the highest ranks of Nauvoo leadership and even participated in multiple secretive Danite missions to Missouri to break Porter Rockwell out of prison and kidnap two people who were set to testify against Joseph Smith in a Missouri court hearing. Jackson’s chief source of income during 1843-44 was manufacturing bogus coins (counterfeit) and his story is stranger than fiction as he himself stands as a wonderful personification of counterfeit. We discuss his dealings, misdealings, and maneuvers which illustrate a strong sense of self-preservation. Links: Joseph H. April 6 marks 189 years since the founding of the Church. We know from history that Joseph Smith said there were the original 6 members. But who were they? Michael Marquardt makes some educated guesses. https://youtu.be/1FTvwwQDqiQ Michael: Yes, well the earliest [sources] we have, because if they're men, of course they would be ordained to an office in the church: elder, priest, teacher. And so since there was no minutes and no other church record, even though they were supposed to keep records, we don't have that. And so the Manuscript History of the Church mentions Joseph Smith, Sr. It also mentions Lucy Mack Smith and those are Joseph Smith's father and mother. It mentions Martin Harris. And, it didn't have the first name, but last name was Rockwell. GT: So was it Porter Rockwell probably? Michael: No. GT: No? Oh really. Michael: That is pretty close. It was his mother... Find out who else was likely there! Check out our conversation.... Michael Marquardt makes an educated guess as to who the original 6 members of the church were on April 6, 1830. Don't forget to check out or previous conversation with Michael! 262: Church Founded in Manchester (Not Fayette)

On this episode, at the behest of Joseph Smith, Joseph H. Jackson embarks on a mercenary trip to Missouri in hopes of breaking Porter Rockwell out of jail and finishing off Ex-Governor Lilburn Boggs. His true intent? Collude with Jackson County Sheriff Reynolds to arrest Joseph Smith. He isn’t successful, but gathers some helpful intel to bring back to the prophet to gain his trust. Joseph Smith heads to Dixon, Illinois to preach but winds up arrested by Sheriffs Reynolds and Wilson; mobs form everywhere they go. The Danites are called out to canvass Illinois to break Jo out of custody and return him to the Kingdom on the Mississippi, and Jo has a pistol smuggled to him. Content warning for this episode, there’s some of strong language. Links: Second Arrest of Joseph Smith 1843 http://www.truthandgrace.com/1843arrest2.htm Joseph H. DEPUTY MARSHAL ROCKWELL From 1848 until his death in 1878, Porter acted as a deputy marshal peace officer of the Utah Territory, to keep law and order within the broad range of land that it covered. For the next 30 years he came into contact with every kind of peculiar people that lived or passed through the territory. To perform his duties in that office, he brought many men into the courts for trial and prison; but he also had to kill many men, as other marshals and deputies often, of necessity, had to do. Notwithstanding the reports of his critics, there is no proof that he ever wantonly killed anyone. The Utah Territory had its share of outlaws and desperados just like the Montana, California, and Texas territories of the west. Crime was common and life was often cheap in these rough wilderness lands. It was the duty of such men as Porter to meet or challenge the lawbreakers in order to bring law and peace to those who wanted it. Porter is said to have “carried on his duties with no more or less callousness and hardness than was necessary in any other region,” and correctly so.
The ORRIN PORTER ROCKWELL, Part 2 of Chapter 9 of B L O O D A T O N E M E N T by OGDEN KRAUT Reports came back to the Mormons that the Army intended to make war. It could mean more devastation than any mob had ever caused. One report said: The United States are sending 2500 infantry, besides Col. Sumner’s dragoons, which are to rendezvous in Great Salt Lake City this winter, 100 teamsters, the worst description of men, picked up on the frontiers, which are more to be dreaded than the soldiers. They are making great calculations for “Booty and Beauty”. (Parowan Historical Record, Aug. 7, 1857) On the other hand, Brigham Young was taking a much milder approach to the situation. He wanted no war nor bloodshed. “Blockade the road, set fire to their trains, burn the whole country before them, keep them from sleeping, BUT TAKE NO LIFE,” Brigham ordered. What a different attitude than that of the president of the United States. Who was the warmaker? Who proposed to shed blood? Who acted in haste, without reason or responsibility and was taking a “savage” stand against innocent people?
ORRIN PORTER ROCKWELL, Chapter 9 of B L O O D A T O N E M E N T by OGDEN KRAUT Page 121 But having been the vortex of controversy while he lived, it seems, somehow, only fitting that the same would be true after his passing Rockwell’s past has been distorted to incredible extremes by writers on two continents who transformed his name into a synonym for terror. (Harold Schindler, Preface to Orrin Porter Rockwell) Orrin Porter Rockwell was a scout, pioneer, frontiersman, and a deputy marshal. His life and career became widely known by friend and foe throughout his colorful life. Only the wild west could contain such a man–a man desperately needed in that era of time. His was an adventurous life, and an antagonistic one, as every lawman well knows. Lawless gunmen feared him; citizens were comforted by his presence. If he had not been a Mormon, he would have been considered not only as one of their best friends, but as one of the most famous western heroes in America.

Joseph Smith, the prophet and founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and his close friend, Porter Rockwell, are charged with the attempted assassination of a former Governor of Missouri. This charge proves to be the latest instance in over a decade of persecution against the prophet -- which persecution has now been taken up by the Anti-Mormons in Illinois.

Some called him a Guardian Angel, others (mostly those who'd looked down the barrel of his gun) called him The Angel of Death. He was blessed by the prophet that he'd never be killed by bullet or blade and as a token of that promise he was told never to cut his hair. Word of that promise made him a Western legend, and plenty of outlaws put it to the test, but none successfully. In the annals of LDS church history, perhaps no one but Joseph Smith himself has been cause for so much speculation and so many fascinating stories, but authors Jerry Borrowman and John W. Rockwell (Porter's great-great-grandson) sift through the legends for the facts—which even without embellishment somehow still leave us scratching our heads wondering who this boyhood friend of Joseph's, from the neighboring farm in Palmyra, really was. That's this week on The Cricket and Seagull...
