On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon delve into a developing story involving a local Utah brewery that has been asked by lawyers for businesses owned by the LDS church to discontinue their signature brew "Deseret IPA" due to trademark infringement. "Deseret" is a word that appears in the Book of Mormon and means "honeybee" and the brewing company developed a beer that uses local honey and local grain and his brewed locally, as a tribute to the state of Utah. Their hope is that visitors will enjoy the beverage and learn more about Utah. This won't happen now that they have been forced to discontinue this beer. There are many different issues surrounding the situation and we go down several related rabbit holes as we delve further into the scenario! We explore the tumultuous history of Mormonism after Joseph Smith's death, including Brigham Young's succession and controversial doctrines like polygamy and blood atonement. Lindsay Hansen Park and Bryan Buchanan guide us through the schisms, scandals and sexual dynamics of this era, from the chaotic leadership struggles in Nauvoo to the restrictive culture of polygamy in Utah. We examine how polygamy hindered missionary work and statehood, the harsh realities for women, the escalating conflicts with the US government, and the 1870s crackdown on plural marriage. Despite sympathizing with early Mormons, the hosts candidly critique problematic teachings and figures like Brigham Young. They argue that Mormonism still struggles from a reluctance to denounce past errors, which allows those harmful ideas to persist and hurt people today. This no-holds-barred journey illuminates a complex chapter of Mormon history.
For today's faithful, believing, temple-recommend-carrying members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, sipping a Chardonnay with their salmon entree would be unthinkable, off the table, a no-no. They know that the faith's Word of Wisdom health code strictly forbids consumption of alcohol. But there was time in the church's history when teetotaling wasn't the order of the day. In fact, there was a time when Latter-day Saints not only drank wine but also produced it, sold it and profited from it — all with their prophet's blessing and encouragement. Indeed, southwestern Utah's pioneer past was home to a church “wine mission.” On this week's show, Lindsay Hansen Park, a blogger, podcaster and executive director of the Sunstone Education Foundation, discusses Brigham Young's wine mission — its roots, the success it enjoyed, the product it produced, the problems it encountered (and engendered), and the ultimate demise it met.

On the latest Under the Banner of Heaven Aftershow we are excited to have on Lindsay Hansen Park! She worked as a consultant for the Under the Banner of Heaven series and she is the Executive Director of Sunstone. On a very special "behind the scenes" episode Lindsay details how she got involved in the project, the role she played in the temple scene, and interacting with Andrew Garfield along with the cast and crew! Lindsay then shares with Rebecca Bibliotheca and Steven Pynakker her overall thoughts about the series. She acknowledges and understands some of the criticisms directed toward the program, but she also shares some "off the record" information that shows how much UTBoH got right. We then discuss "Revelation", the 6th episode of the series. This is probably the best episode so far and it was a real delight to get Lindsay's take. To cap off our program Lindsay gives a sneak peek of this year's Sunstone Summer Symposium "Many Mansions". Steven is then officially appointed to be the umpire for the annual kick ball tournament between the Ex-Mo's and the Fundamentalists! This has been a really enjoyable time having these converstions about the show. Next week I'll be at the Mormon History Association Conference so there may be a slight delay in taping for the finale. This week Amy is joined by Shannon Johnson to help us zoom in even further to more fully unpack the practice of polygamous marriage in the LDS church and its impact on individual women. Not only do we learn some surprising and essential history, but Shannon trusts us with the story of her own journey coming-of-age within the church community and wrestling with polygamy on a personal level. Shannon Olena Hyatt Johnson (she/her) grew up mostly in Utah and went to BYU, where she met her husband, who was also an English major. She has taught conversational English in Japan and Cairo, and now works in admin at Stanford. She is currently writing a master's thesis on race, polygamy, and the Mormon family. Shannon has three daughters and a non-binary child, ranging in age from 11 to 21. Shannon likes hiking, yoga, British tv, and trashy romance novels.
