Fr. Mike expands on Ezekiel 33 and emphasizes that the role of a prophet, is to be God's watchman and speak whatever it is God wants to be spoken. He stresses the reality that those who are teachers and leaders, who shape and form the consciences of others, have the responsibility to speak the truth even when it's hard. Today's readings are Jeremiah 5, Ezekiel 33, and Proverbs 14:21-24. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. We are storytellers. From childhood fairy tales to the most erudite and complex cosmological theories, we use good stories to communicate truth. What exactly then is the story of the cosmos? Is there one? And what can modern science tell us about this story? Good science communicators attempt to answer these questions, composing their explanations about the heavens into meaningful and compelling narratives. But is the modern story of the cosmos the true story of the cosmos? Most scientific theories about the universe take little or no account for God. The universe is only or "just" what it is made of, just what it does, nothing more. But we here at Good Heavens! believe there is a true and good story about the universe that includes where it came from, what it all means, and to whom it points. Jesus. As Colossians 1 proclaims, "For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven" (Colossians 1.17-20, NASB 1995). Astrophysicist Jeff Zweerink is a former senior research scholar at Reasons to Believe (RTB). He earned a BS in physics and a PhD in astrophysics from Iowa State University with a focus on gamma rays. He taught at and ran the planetarium at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, until postdoctoral research in gamma rays led him to the University of California, Riverside. Jeff spent years working on the STACEE and VERITAS gamma-ray telescopes and was involved in research projects such as the Solar Two project and the Whipple Collaboration. He continues to work as a project scientist at UCLA on GAPS, a balloon experiment seeking to detect dark matter. Zweerink is also a coauthor of more than 30 academic papers published in peer-reviewed journals such as Astrophysical Journal, Astroparticle Physics, and Astrobiology. While an undergrad at Iowa State University, he heard astrophysicist and RTB founder Hugh Ross speak on the constructive integration of science and the Christian faith. Ten years later, a professor encouraged Zweerink to enroll in RTB's volunteer apologists program. This involvement eventually led to a scholar position in 2005. Today, Zweerink writes and speaks on the compatibility of science and the Christian faith and on evidence for intentional design from multiverse theory and exoplanets, as well as artificial intelligence (AI). His speaking engagements take him to universities, conferences, churches, high schools, youth groups, and other venues around the world. His books include Is There Life Out There?, Who's Afraid of the Multiverse?, Escaping the Beginning?, and Building Bridges (coauthor). He has also made many media appearances on television, radio, and in print. Zweerink and his wife, Lisa, live in Southern California and have five children. Exploring the Connection Between Matthew 21, the Book of Ecclesiastes, and Isaiah 21 For Bible in Ten – By DH – 9th August 2026 Matthew 21, Ecclesiastes, and Isaiah 21 1 The Greater Son of David and the End of Vanity Matthew 21 presents Jesus Christ as the rightful King, the rejected Son, and the only secure foundation for man. Ecclesiastes gives a remarkable companion to this chapter because it begins with another “son of David, king in Jerusalem.” That king searched through wisdom, pleasure, wealth, achievement, labour, and human experience, yet repeatedly concluded: “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” Matthew 21 presents the greater Son of David entering the same city. Solomon could describe the problem of life under the sun, but he could not remove it. He saw that wisdom could not defeat death, wealth could not endure, pleasure could not satisfy permanently, and human labour could not produce lasting gain. Jesus came not merely to describe the problem, but to solve it. Solomon observed the curse. Christ came to bear it. Solomon saw that all men die. Christ came to lay down His life and take it again. Solomon searched for lasting meaning. Christ is the One in whom lasting meaning is found. 2 What Profit Is There? Ecclesiastes repeatedly asks what lasting profit man receives from all his labour. Matthew 21 applies that question powerfully to religion. The temple was full of activity: sacrifices, money changing, worship, teaching, and ceremony. Yet when the One to whom the entire system pointed entered the temple, its leaders rejected Him. What profit is there in maintaining the shadow while rejecting the substance? The temple could demonstrate the need for cleansing, but it could not finally cleanse man from sin. The sacrifices pointed toward atonement, but they could not complete it. Jesus is the reality toward which they pointed. Religion without Christ becomes another form of vanity. 3 Empty Words Before God Ecclesiastes warns: “Draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools.” It also warns against careless words and vows before God. That connects directly with Jesus' parable of the two sons. One said he would obey, but did not. The other initially refused, but later repented and obeyed. The religious leaders possessed the language of obedience, yet they rejected Christ. Tax collectors and harlots had openly lived in disobedience, yet when they believed, they entered the kingdom before them. Profession without faith is empty. Words without obedience are vanity. The true question is whether a person receives the Son. 4 A Time to Plant and a Time to Uproot Ecclesiastes says: “A time to plant, and a time to pluck what is planted.” This provides a fitting background to the fig tree and vineyard of Matthew 21. God had planted Israel and entrusted them with covenant privilege. But stewardship was intended to produce fruit. The fig tree had leaves, but no fruit. The vinedressers wanted the vineyard, but rejected the owner's servants and finally his son. They treated stewardship as ownership. Matthew 21 therefore marks an appointed time of accountability. There had been a time to plant. Now there was a time for fruit to be examined. The leaders could not make their stewardship permanent simply because they wished to retain it. What God appoints, He also has authority to remove. 5 What God Does Endures One of the strongest connections with Ecclesiastes is this: “Whatever God does, it shall be forever. Nothing can be added to it, and nothing taken from it.” This points beautifully toward the sufficiency of Christ. The religious system had accumulated ceremonies, traditions, authority, and outward forms, but salvation would not come through adding more. God's work in Christ would be complete. Jesus is the fulfilment of the law. He is the true Sacrifice. He is the rejected Stone who becomes the chief cornerstone. Nothing can be added to His work. Nothing can improve it. Nothing needs to complete it. Human works pass away. God's work in Christ endures forever. 6 Isaiah 21 — Human Glory Falls Isaiah 21 adds a solemn supporting witness: “Babylon is fallen, is fallen.” Babylon appeared powerful and secure, yet its strength, wealth, and idols could not prevent the judgment appointed by God. Ecclesiastes teaches that earthly greatness is temporary. Isaiah 21 demonstrates it. Matthew 21 applies the same warning to religious privilege. The leaders of Jerusalem trusted in their position, their temple, and their authority. But no system is secure when it rejects the Son. Isaiah 21 also asks: “Watchman, what of the night?” The answer comes: “The morning comes, and also the night.” The morning had come to Jerusalem because the King had arrived. But for those who rejected Him, night was also approaching. And finally, section 7 — The Pattern of the Number Twenty-One There is a beautiful pattern surrounding the number 21. W. Bullinger notes that twenty-one is three times seven, presenting the thought of Divine completion in relation to spiritual perfection. This gives an interesting framework to these three passages. Ecclesiastes is book 21. It demonstrates that man cannot attain lasting completeness through anything “under the sun.” Isaiah 21 shows that even the greatest human power cannot make itself permanent: Babylon falls at the appointed word of God. Then Matthew 21 presents the answer in a Person. What man cannot attain, and what human power cannot preserve, God provides in Christ. Ecclesiastes asks: What truly lasts? Isaiah 21 answers: not the glory of man. Matthew 21 answers: Jesus Christ. Thus the pattern of twenty-one does not glorify human perfection. It directs us instead to the perfection and permanence of what God has accomplished in His Son. Man searches. Man builds. Both come to an end. But God sends His Son. And in Him is the enduring answer. Life Application Ecclesiastes warns us not to seek permanence in temporary things. Isaiah 21 reminds us that even the greatest human powers eventually fall. Matthew 21 directs us instead to Christ. Religion, wisdom, wealth, achievement, and position cannot reconcile us to God. Jesus alone can. Therefore, our confidence must rest not in what man can build, achieve, or preserve, but in what God has accomplished through His Son. Christ alone is the secure and eternal foundation.   Prayer Lord God, thank You for showing us the emptiness of trusting in things that cannot endure. Thank You for sending Jesus Christ, the greater Son of David, the true King, and the everlasting cornerstone. Keep us from empty religion and misplaced confidence. May our faith rest entirely in Christ and in the work You have completed through Him. To You be all glory forever. Amen.

Air embolism is one of those complications that feels impossible right up until it happens fast, quietly, and with life-altering consequences. We walk through the FDA's 2025 Early Alert on the Watchman access system for left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) procedures and connect the dots between device exchange steps, transseptal puncture, and the anesthetic choice that can put patients at risk.We talk about why the shift toward sedation and spontaneous ventilation in structural heart procedures can increase risk when an access system is open or imperfectly sealed. Negative intrathoracic pressure may create a suction gradient that favors air entry into the left atrium, where even small volumes can lead to coronary air embolism or cerebral air embolism. We also review what the FDA reported, including known cases of serious injury and death, and why registry rates may underestimate true events. From there, we translate guidance into practical anesthesia patient safety moves you can use in the interventional cardiology suite: when to consider controlled positive pressure ventilation and PEEP, what to watch during sheath manipulation, and how to set clear roles for sheath control, flushing, and line management. We cover prevention details like keeping components below the level of the heart, slow flushing to maintain a continuous fluid column, and performing exchanges under saline or water baths. We also outline an immediate response plan: recognize quickly, support hemodynamics, consider Trendelenburg positioning, aspirate air if indicated, and activate perfusion support early when available. If this topic touches your practice, share this with your cardiology and anesthesia team, then subscribe, leave a review, and send the episode to a colleague who does transseptal cases. What does your team do to prevent air entrainment during exchanges? For show notes & transcript, visit our episode page at apsf.org: https://www.apsf.org/podcast/318-air-embolism-alert/© 2026, The Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation

A frequent argument leveled against the Bible by skeptics and non-believers is that the Bible is just a collection of borrowed myths from surrounding pagan nations. But is that actually true? Are stories in the Bible just borrowed mythology from other pagan cultures? The short answer is "Absolutely not." The longer answer can be found in Old Testament scholar and theologian Dr. John Oswalt, in his 2009 book, The Bible Among the Myths - Unique Revelation or Just Ancient Literature? Program Note: Daniel misspoke about the Tycho and Kepler supernovae. They were not the last to be seen in the universe but the last two supernovae to be seen in the Milky Way galaxy.   A great deal of time, effort, and tax dollars have been spent to explore the heavens. But even after all the expenditures, secular astronomy and cosmology are still unable to say what it all means. Some have suggested the universe doesn't mean anything, that it just is. Others say we can make up our own meaning. But we here at Good Heavens! believe the universe exists for one main purpose, to declare the glory and the righteousness of God, to display His handiwork and remind us of His many invisible attributes (Psalm 19; 50.6; Romans 1.18ff; Colossians 1.16ff). Here on this episode we sit down with Christian and astrophysicist Dr. Jeff Zweerink and get his thoughts about how he sees the universe pointing him to the glory of God. This sermon explores Ezekiel's commission as a watchman for the house of Israel, emphasizing the necessity of the Holy Spirit in receiving and delivering God's word. The preacher highlights the paradox of the scroll being sweet to eat yet containing messages of lamentation, illustrating that God's truth is inherently valuable despite its challenging nature. Central to the message is the call for ministers to remain faithful to their divine mandate regardless of the audience's stubbornness or refusal to listen. The text underscores the serious responsibility placed on prophets and preachers to warn both the wicked and the righteous, ensuring they do not bear guilt for those who reject the warning. Ultimately, the sermon urges believers to internalize God's word with humility and obedience, recognizing that hearing is a prerequisite for faithful action.

Welcome to this thought-provoking and insightful episode of The Watchman Report. In this outstanding presentation, we delve into one of the most remarkable and revealing prophecies in the Bible: the modern return of the Jewish people to the land of Israel. How did God orchestrate events across centuries to bring His people back to their ancient homeland? Join us as we explore the wonderful and precise fulfilment of Scripture, proving once again that the Bible is the inspired Word of God.We examine the dual prophecy from Jeremiah 16, where God declares He would send for "fishers" and "hunters" to bring Israel back from the nations. We see the fisherman at work in the Zionist movement, from Theodor Herzl to Chaim Weizmann, and the pivotal, history-changing conversation that led to the Balfour Declaration. We also consider the sobering reality of the hunters—the horrific persecution that ultimately drove a stateless people back to their prophetic destiny. This is a powerful exposition of how God's purpose is the mould into which all history is poured.

Good Heavens! The Human Side of Astronomy

Venus is the morning and evening star, often mistaken for a plane or UFO. Named after the Greco-Roman goddess of love, Venus is anything but hospitable to human life. Tornado-like windspeeds in the upper atmosphere, a crushingly suffocating and poisonous atmosphere, a harsh, volcano-covered surface, all make us marvel and wonder. What exactly is Venus? Here on this month's Good Heavens! episode Wayne and Dan ponder aloud the mysteries and wonders of the second planet from the sun and how they think Venus points us to the glory of God in Christ. Thumbnail image from NASA: Radar Observations of Venus "This hemispheric view of Venus was created using radar observations, including images from NASA's Magellan spacecraft. Magellan imaged more than 98% of Venus. Gaps in the Magellan coverage were filled with images from the Earth-based Arecibo radar. The composite image was processed to improve contrast and to emphasize small features, and was color-coded to represent elevation. Magellan launched on May 4, 1989, and was deployed from the cargo bay of Space Shuttle Atlantis on May 5, 1989. The spacecraft orbited Venus from Aug. 10, 1990, until Oct. 13, 1994 when the spacecraft was commanded to plunge into the atmosphere of Venus." Most historians agree that when Washington resigned from the military and went home to farming. He was very popular with the general population and the military. A man of lesser character would have pronounced himself king and would have become one more tyrant. Washington had a number of between-the-eyes aphorisms.
