[Original airdate: 4/4/24] Mary chats with Brady Blevins of Watchman Fellowship, an apologetics ministry dedicated to exposing the major cults of our time. Brady serves as the senior apologist at Watchman and has a heart for sharing the true gospel with those deceived by a counterfeit Christianity.  He also teaches and serves as the assistant dean of the Graduate School of Theology and Chair for the School of Ministry at Arlington Baptist University. "I very carefully listened to scores of recordings before settling on this one and it captured my imagination instantly. It's incredibly rich and mysterious. What was documented in this field recording transports us, I think, to a place both ancient and instantly present. We hear footfalls climbing rickety stairs. In the distance bells toll. And in the foreground a sonorous voice intones a repeated phrase, mysteriously. It was my clear favourite and I hope we've done it justice.    "The recording is from Spain and although Sylvia has visited the country, I have not yet been there myself. We have friends who live in the ancient city of Tarifa and they have often spoken of the magic of this place - particularly the spectacular religious processions and other traditional sacred rituals. The field recording seems to conjure this for us, quite movingly so. I hope my composition and our recording underscores and enhances that sense of mystery, of faith, of ritual.   "There is very little enhancement to this particular field recording aside from looping it and lightly adding reverb in places. We were committed to keeping it out front as the most present piece of sound throughout. Listening repeatedly, I began to compose, beginning with an underscoring on synth - a sine pad in a kind of four-voice drone. Using that as our basic track, I continued with further instrumentation: bass, a kind of twinkling, echoing guitar figure and two further tracks of a deep Moog synth played live through a Vox AC-30 amplifier and a large double-speaker cabinet, both parts rising and falling in swells. At that point I sent the track to Sylvia in France. It was the first time she had heard the field recording and, partly of Spanish extraction herself, she instantly recognized it as being from Spain. She added a whispered echo of that mysterious repeated phrase, just the word “siempre”. Sylvia and I continued by recording wordless vocals in four parts, like a distant choir. Finally, Summer's voice joins, rising above them. All of the instrumentation and vocals slowly fade up into the mix in support of the field recording itself, in what we hope illustrates this track's very title - the dream of the trusted watchman of this ancient bell tower.       "There is, we hope, a decidedly spiritual component to our work. And this field recording certainly engaged that part of us. Bipolar Explorer is a project begun and now continued in dedication to our cofounder Summer Serafin who passed away age 31 after a tragic accident in 2011. We often say that our work is of, for and about Summer, which is to say that it finds its inspiration and narrative in dedication but also includes her. Our treasure trove of Summer's isolated vocals make it possible to fly her in as we build and compose new works. Indeed, you hear her on this very track. I think that great loss brings us to question what we believe - of our lives, of the world, of what may be beyond. It's a very personal journey but we're all of us on one and sometimes artistic expression can bring that to bear, bring the disparate together so we don't feel so alone. Perhaps (and I personally and fervently believe) there's more to our lives than we can know. Perhaps our lives are more than we can see. Perhaps time is not static. Perhaps in that sense we are forever. These sounds from Spain moved us yet again to compose a piece that we hope reflects that very thing: perhaps we are all forever. Perhaps we get a hint of that in dreams. This is message 22 in the Isaiah series. Isaiah 21:1-22:25 Isaish warns of the downfall of nations that rely on human strength rather than God, using Babylon, Edom, Arabia, and Jerusalem as examples of misplaced trust. The watchman's call in Isaiah 21 highlights the urgency of vigilance and dependence on God, while the failures of Jerusalem in Isaiah 22 expose the consequences of pride and self-reliace. The contrast between Shebna and Eliakim reinforces the need for faithful stewardship under God's authority. Throughout, the message is clear--human power crumbles, but those who trust in the Lord stand firm. Our thumbnail image this week is not a doctored or photoshopped image, but a genuine picture of the sun from October 2024. Taken in 193 angstrom light on Oct. 26, 2024, NASA captured our sun in a state of rejoicing, or so it seemed (image credit NASA/GSFC/SDO). The darker regions you see that comprise the eyes and mouth are actually regions of the surface of the sun that have been blasted off by coronal mass ejections that can trigger solar storms here on earth. In fact, solar storm warnings were issued because of this particular image. All that "missing" material is fired off into space and some of it could (and did) strongly interact with Earth's atmosphere, creating the Northern Lights effect. The charged particles from the sun interact with the magnetic field of Earth, which shields us from just such ejections. Without the magnetic shield, Earth's atmosphere would be stripped bare by these solar ejecta. This is a perfect analogy to what the Bible says about God in Psalm 84:11. "Our God is a sun and shield." The radiant and fiercely powerful light of the sun reminds us of God as a "consuming fire", while the Earth's magnetic field reminds us that God is a shield to us. We are protected by God's wrath through Christ on the cross. God provides us with His own righteous shield, in the person of His Son Jesus who, upon the cross, has taken away our sin. This week and next on the Profile, Watchman senior apologist Dr. Brady Blevins talks with counter-cult apologist Steve Matthews about the recent split of the International Christian Church (ICC), founded by the controversial and charismatic leader Kip McKean. Not only did the ICC recently split, it also disfellowshipped McKean himself for inappropriate behavior, some of which McKean has publicly acknowledged. The new breakaway from the ICC now calls itself the Restored Church Worldwide (RCW). In addition, this past January, the RCW "restored" McKean, not in a position of leadership, but as a member. Steve shares with us some of the details and background of the split and the history of McKean's association with the ICOC, the ICC, and now the RCW.    Yesterday, Mr. Ezekiel challenged us to consider our vital life roles in our families and society as ‘watchmen’. It was God’s calling & commission to Ezekiel. (Ez. 3:16,17) For Ezekiel no further explanation was needed. As human beings we occupy a wondrously peculiar size in the cosmos. With our unique stature, we are able to see and comprehend scales of the universe at the inconceivably huge and the unimaginably small. We here at Good Heavens! believe God has arranged this peculiar state of affairs and wants us to know and delight in what He has made.  The heavens are telling of His glory and we want to be a part in getting His word and the works of His hands out there for everyone to contemplate, consider, and enjoy. Dr. Michael G. Strauss is a particle physicist at CERN and the University of Oklahoma and Dr. Luke Barnes is a researcher and lecturer of cosmology and astrophysics at Western Sydney University in Sydney, Australia. Both have published works at the professional and popular levels. It was a wonder and a privilege to get them both at the table together to hear their insights about the structure of the universe at the large and small scales and how they see God in all of it. Here on part one, we chat about the standard models of cosmology and particle physics, the wonder of stars, and the unsolved mysteries facing doctors of the cosmos today. Whether you are a theist, non-theist, or take a young earth or old earth perspective as a Christian, we hope you'll find these episodes encouraging and informative. How might things like "spooky action at a distance" or mysterious as "dark matter" point us to the glory of God? Whether you are a theist or a non-theist or a Christian who believes in a young or an old universe, we can all agree on at least one thing. The universe is a fascinating place in which we find ourselves. That the universe is intelligible to us is even more remarkable. But here at Good Heavens! we like to think the cosmos is more than just fascinating. We believe, as the Bible reveals, that the physical cosmos, at both the incredibly large and infinitesimally small scales, reveal to us something about God's invisible attributes. As both the psalms and Isaiah tell us, the whole of the heavens and earth are filled with the glory of God. Often we are told that Christianity and science cannot possibly go together, however. But hopefully our special guests will continue to dispel that misconception.
