In February, SC US Representative, Nancy Mace gave a 53 minute speech on the House floor that accused four men of terrible crimes against women. All the men of denied the accusations and none have been charged with the crimes. Mace accused SC AG and Gubernatorial candidate, Alan Wilson, of not doing his job to protect women from men like those she accused. The U.S. Constitution has some legal protection from anything they say on the floor. However; questions remain if those same protections can be used if the accusations are made on social media or elsewhere outside the floor. Fallout From Mace's speech causing lawsuits to mount. A few weeks ago Matt and Seton Interviewed Dick Harpootlian who prosecuted Pee Wee Gaskins. In this episode you will hear from the other side of the courtroom in the Gaskins trial. Donald Henry "Pee Wee" Gaskins Jr. is one of South Carolina's most notorious serial killers. He murdered more than a dozen people between 1970 and 1975. Gaskins was sentenced to 10 concurrent life sentences. While serving his sentence at Central Correctional Institute (CCI) prison in Columbia, South Carolina, he murdered another inmate. Dick Harpootlian prosecuted Pee Wee and Jack Swerling defended Pee Wee Gaskins. Gaskins was sentenced to death, which was administered in September of 1991. In this episode you will hear from Jack Swerling about the case and his dealings with Pee Wee Gaskins. GT  00:30  I think I've only asked you 1/20 of what I wanted to ask. I need to let you go, but the last question that I want to hit you on, I remember we had a conversation one time, and you said that when you write a book, you only put in about 30% of your research. Usually it's because of page limitations and that sort of a thing. Can you share a story or two of the 70% that's not in this book? Matt  01:07  Yeah. GT  01:09  I mean, I guess the Brown stuff, that's for your new book. But what are some things that due to space restrictions you just couldn't get in? Matt  01:21  Well, just a quick thought, the Brown stuff is in there, his activism and speaking to the press and getting Monroe Fleming ordained or trying to get him ordained, that's all in there in great detail. But the later stuff in the 1970s... GT  01:34  Daddy, the recording, I don't think that was in there. Matt  01:38  No, no, no. That will be in my Brown biography. And in full disclosure, I found some of this stuff after, later. GT  01:53  A book is never finished. Right? Matt  01:58  Oh, my goodness. Well, there are other details that I'll include about Brown and the ban, in particular, because it's so pivotal to his story, as is polygamy, weirdly enough. And also, the other story I'll just start with a teaser, is that Brown was told that he would be an apostle at the age of 15, if he lived righteous enough. He wasn't called in the Quorum of the Twelve until he was 78 years of age. GT  02:19 Wow. Matt  02:20 That is a problem, especially if you've been told... GT  02:24. We could have gotten rid of the ban sooner. Right? If he was only 20... Matt  02:29. The teaser I'll give you is it wasn't the ban that kept him out. It was something else. He was accused of doing something he did not do. GT  02:36  Did Newell Bringhurst share that story, or maybe you did. Was it with alcohol? Matt  02:43  Newell wouldn't have known this. Well, Newell knows it only for me. This is all new stuff that nobody knows about. And I've shared it with a few people. GT  02:47  Was it with the alcohol commission or something? Matt  02:52  Yeah. Some other time, I'll tell you more about the details of that. It's a fascinating thing. He was accused of taking bribes that he didn't take. But perception can be reality. GT  03:02. It doesn't matter when it's politics. Matt  03:04  That's right. GT  03:04. Accusation is good enough. Matt  03:05  That's right, and especially when people's income is at stake. So there's a lot of things I didn't talk about in this book. I couldn't because of space constraints, but some of it was--I'll give you a couple of examples. One deals with the activism. I talk a lot about the Church Education System and the BYU religion faculty and CES/Institute people, those who teach the young men and women of the Church, college age. I was shocked at the level of pushback from people who are paid to teach religion to the college-aged kids, how much they opposed the ban. GT  03:51 Oh wow. Matt  03:52 And you definitely get that in this book. You see it. I mean, I name some names, just the more high profile people like Lowell Bennion. But because of the length of the book, and they wanted to keep the price down, the press and all of that, I had to cut out a lot of details on that. GT  04:10. Can we get a sequel? Matt  04:14. And so I name names.

Episode 328 features my longtime friend and bandmate Matt Harris, aka the Big Laird. We wanted to do a little recap episode of this weekend's Part-Time Rockstar Fest — the 5th annual — at Fish Head Cantina. We talked about how it went, what went well, what we could improve on, and stuff like that. And talk a little bit about the bands that played. It was definitely a fun year, and I really appreciate everyone who came out/helped out. A good time was had by all I do believe. For the regular listeners, I should mention that I play in the Big Laird Band as well as The Hollow Truths. The Laird Band normally does cover shows, but we've been writing more originals lately, so we touched on that a bit in the conversation. This weekend, July 5th, the Big Laird Band will be on the road, heading down to Charlottesville, VA — or more specifically, Crozet, VA — to play at PRN Brewing, which is a great live music venue and brewery down there. The Big Laird Band will also be releasing new music soon, as soon as we can figure out how to pay for it. Michael Colucci, a Summerville, South Carolina jeweler, was once again on trial for the death of his wife, seven years after his initial trial ended in a mistrial. Michael Colucci is accused of killing his wife, Sara Lynn Colucci, in May 2015. During his first trial in 2018, prosecutors alleged that Michael strangled Sara. His defense argued that she died by suicide, claiming she hanged herself with a garden hose on a nearby fence while Michael was sitting in their car just 25 feet away. Just moments before Colucci's trial was set to begin, Judge Roger Young ruled in favor of the defense motion to dismiss the case. Seton tucker was there for the shocking decision. We discuss the ruling with her father, Matt Siembieda. Matt Siembieda is an attorney, graduate of Penn Law School and a law professor at Temple Law School. Michael Colucci, a Summerville, South Carolina jeweler, is once again on trial for the death of his wife, seven years after his initial trial ended in a mistrial. Michael Colucci is accused of killing his wife, Sara Lynn Colucci, in May 2015. During his first trial in 2018, prosecutors alleged that Michael strangled Sara. His defense argued that she died by suicide, claiming she hanged herself with a garden hose on a nearby fence while Michael was sitting in their car just 25 feet away. June 7, 2021 Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were found murdered on their estate in rural Colleton County, SC. Prominent South Carolina attorney, Alex Murdaugh made the 911 call to authorities about the murders. Becky Hill, the former Colleton County clerk of court, was arrested and charged with obstructing justice and misconduct in Colleton County and perjury in Richland County. The perjury charge stems from her testimony in a January 2024 hearing into whether Alex Murdaugh would get a new trial based on Hill's alleged jury tampering. Justice Toal ruled that Murdaugh should not get a new trial. Murdaugh's defense team has appealed that decision to the SC State Supreme Court. A man described as a “budding serial killer” was placed in a state-approved mental health residential care home in Columbia, South Carolina, where he allegedly killed and cannibalized two individuals over a five-month period. The accused consumed the ears of both victims and drank one victim's blood. Jared Ondrea was the first victim. On September 30, 2024, Ty'Ran Tyrell Dixon, a professional football player from Columbia, SC was detained by law enforcement and told there was a warrant for his arrest of murder that occurred in Barnwell, SC on October 15, 2023. Dixon not only did not commit the murder, he was never even charged with the murder and he was never in Barnwell, SC. Dixon spent 66 days imprisoned. Asha Degree was just nine years old when she disappeared from her home in Shelby, North Carolina, more than 25 years ago. Since then, various law enforcement agencies, including local, state, and federal authorities, have been working to solve the case. In the past few months there appears to have been some movement in the case. In this episode we hear from the hosts of the podcast Crackhouse Chronicles https://www.crackhousechronicles.com/ . Donnie Peeler and Dale Champion, have been involved in the case of Asha Degree since her disappearance in 2000. They have done many episodes on the case since starting their podcast and have a unique vantage point due to the fact they are from Asha's hometown of Shelby, NC. In September 2024, several search warrants were executed by law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office, as part of an investigation into the connection between Asha's disappearance and a local family. These warrants named the Dedmon family members—Roy Dedmon, his wife Connie Dedmon, and their three daughters: AnnaLee Dedmon Ramirez, Lizzie Dedmon Foster, and Sarah Dedmon Caple. It was during the execution of these search warrants that investigators publicly announced for the first time that they believed Asha Degree had been murdered. Additionally, authorities suggested that the Dedmon sisters might have had a role in the suspected crime. However, the Dedmon family has consistently denied any involvement in the disappearance of Asha Degree. In February 2025, WBTV obtained three new search warrants related to the ongoing investigation. These warrants were executed on February 13, 2025, as part of the continuing effort to uncover the truth. A new witness has come forward, claiming to have heard a confession related to the case. At the time Asha disappeared, Lizzie Foster was 16 years old, and Sarah Dedmon Caple was 15. The witness stated that he had socialized with the Dedmon sisters at various bars and house parties in the mid-2000s. He alleged that during one particular house party, he overheard Foster confess something related to Asha's disappearance. Jaden's Law We talk to the mother of Jaden Phillips about a proposed legislation, bill H 3601, “Jaden's Law.” The bill is of great significance to Jaden's family after tragically losing their 19 year old son in a boating accident. “Jaden's Law” is designed to address critical gaps in the South Carolina's response system for boating accents. It would enact new requirements for 911 dispatchers to access injuries and the nature of the accident. Additionally, it would implement improvements on how law enforcement agencies are notified and work together to properly investigate accidents involving deaths and homicides. Jaden's mother seeks to give him a voice and improve the current system in hopes it helps other families. On July 27, 2022, 17 year old Gavin Guffey of York County, SC took his life after being a victim of a sextortion scheme.  A Nigerian man, Hassanbunhusssein Abolore Lawal has been extradited to SC and faces charges. It is alleged that Lawal coerced Gavin into sending sexually explicit images and then attempted to extort Gavin and family members by threatening to release the images.
