Catch-up with Kareemah Batts, founder of Adaptive Climbing Group, diversity professional, and disability advocate.  Kareemah was on the show back in May of 2018, talking about her journey of finding climbing after losing a leg to cancer, and all that she’s done to share her love of climbing with others. As a Black adaptive climber, Kareemah holds multiple identities and is wildly motivated to continue making the outdoor world more accessible for all people. In an Instagram live catch-up Gale did with Kareemah on Friday, we talked about her 2020. All the good, all the difficult. As someone who falls in the category of high risk for COVID, we were moved by her ability to continue to take on new challenges and deepen her relationship with the outdoors during a year she described as a “bad ex” you'd rather not mention by name. This special bonus episode of She Explores is brought to you by ust, who are making a name in the camping world by creating gear that helps EVERYONE get outside and enjoy the outdoors. “Everything that we love is affected by politics for better or worse, and we can't afford to not be engaged with it,” says Canyon Woodward.  Today we hear stories from two people who’ve leaned in and worked directly with elected leaders to have a say in the future of the places we love. Canyon Woodward explains how trail running is a lot like running for office, and Kareemah Batts shares what it’s like to Climb The Hill on behalf of public lands and the outdoor community. We also hear from a broad set of voices across our country about why participation in the democratic process matters. We’re all in this together.

Nikki Smith is a professional rock climber, boulderer, photographer, writer, and climbing guidebook publisher, with more than 150 first ascents under her belt. She also just happens to be transgender. An advocate for the LGBTQ+ community in the outdoors and an ally fighting for diversity and inclusion in climbing and beyond, she's taking a break from climbing during the pandemic, citing the risks to herself, her climbing partners, and potential rescuers. But that hasn't stopped her from finding refuge outside. This week, we chat with Nikki from her home in Utah about getting her start in climbing, how we can make the outdoor community more welcoming, and the women in the outdoors we all need to be following. (Plus, you can hear a few meows in the background of this episode from her adorable cats.)  Read a full transcription of the episode here: https://www.cntraveler.com/story/what-rock-climbing-taught-me-about-facing-my-fears-women-who-travel-podcast Follow Meredith: @ohheytheremere Follow Lale: @lalehannah Follow Women Who Travel: @womenwhotravel __________ Follow the women Nikki shouted out in the episode: Kareemah Batts, @herhopness Irene Yee, @ladylockoff Brittany Leavitt, @bleavitt8 Sam Ortiz, @samortizphoto Jaylyn Gough, @jaylyn.gough Piseth Sam, @mightymight88 Mélise Marie, @meliseymo __________ Note, this week's episode of Women Who Travel is not on a Wednesday just because of the long weekend. Today's guest is Kareemah Batts. Kareemah is an adaptive climber based in New York City with one incredible story. She was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer back in 2009 and was forced to have one of her legs amputated to save her life. A climbing trip out to Colorado profoundly changed her life. After this moving experience, she founded the Adaptive Climbing Group and made it her mission to provide the same kind of opportunities for other adaptive climbers to experience what she did in Colorado. She tells her story so well, you can't help but be moved by it. In the end she says it's not about what makes us different. It's all about highlighting what's the same about us and what brings us all together. It's definitely the climbing. Enjoy! In her late twenties, Kareemah Batts was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma, a super rare cancer that strikes young adults. Rather than endure multiple surgeries to battle the illness, Kareemah opted for amputation of her left leg below the knee. In her recovery, the New York City native discovered a passion for climbing and uncovered a penchant for defying the odds. As founder of the Adaptive Climbing Group, she has provided inspirational pathways for fellow amputees and adaptive climbers to discover the sport and has worked tirelessly to help redefine athleticism in the climbing culture.

Kareemah Batts is many things. A woman. A climber. An African American. A cancer survivor. An amputee. A self-described “broke girl from Flatbush.” She’s not just one thing. After being overlooked for conversations about diversity in the outdoor community, Kareemah decided to jumpstart a new conversation — she wants to expand the outdoor community’s definition of diversity and to rethink how we approach inclusivity. Because, as it turns out, diversity is a pretty damn diverse subject. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
