We first met the incredible Sharde Fultz in our very first season of Marrow Masters, back in 2019. We wanted to reconnect with her as one our our "survivors who thrive" this season. In 2009, Sharde was a college student, living on campus as a dance major with big dreams. Then she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Following chemotherapy and radiation, Sharde received an an allogeneic bone marrow transplant in 2011. Having to leave school, she immersed herself in online support forums for young adult cancer patients. When Sharde returned to school, between her recovery and chronic GVHD, she had to come to terms with some physical limitations. While she still had a passion for dance, she'd need to pivot. Her time interacting with fellow cancer survivors really sparked something in her. She wanted to be able to related to not just other patients, but also people who looked like her. She could fight against some of the inequities in our health care system.Sharde connected with an organization called Next Step, which sends people on "campferences" - part camp, part conference. She attended a campference in 2010, and now works for the organization. Speaking engagements turned into a facilitator role for young adult cancer camps. She's now the conference director, and is working toward a degree in social work.Sharde's advice for fellow cancer survivors is to change how you think about time, and don't compare your journey to anyone else's progress.Next Step Fund website: https://www.nextstepnet.org/Cassie Hines Shoes Cancer: https://cassiehinesshoescancer.org/Stupid Cancer: https://stupidcancer.org/First Descents: https://firstdescents.org/Camp Mak-A-Dream: https://www.campdream.org/Other ResourcesNational Bone Marrow Transplant Link - (800) LINK-BMT, or (800) 546-5268.nbmtLINK Website: https://www.nbmtlink.org/nbmtLINK Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/nbmtLINKnbmtLINK YouTube Page can be found by clicking here.Thank you to our sponsors. While cancer can affect anyone, the Adolescent & Young Adult (AYA) patient population can experience heightened distress & challenges compared to other age groups. However, these issues are frequently overlooked & underserved, leading to potentially lifelong challenges.Worse yet, these patients often discuss being “dropped off a cliff” once they finish treatment. They attempt to return to “normal life,” but report feeling alone, abandoned, struggling, anxious, depressed, & other psychological issues. What they need is ongoing psychosocial supportive care.Enter First Descents.Today, Kristin McMaster is on TheOncoPT Podcast to discuss the impact of First Descents, how incorporating outdoor activities is so beneficial for our AYA survivors, & how to connect your patients with First Descents.Follow TheOncoPT on Instagram.Follow TheOncoPT on TikTok.Follow TheOncoPT on Twitter.
In this episode of BackTable, Dr. Bagrodia interviews Dr. William Flanary, a physician-comedian popularly known as Dr. Glaucomflecken, about lessons he has learned as a two-time testicular cancer survivor and the importance of humor in medicine. --- CHECK OUT OUR SPONSOR RADPAD® Radiation Protection https://www.radpad.com/ --- EARN CME Reflect on how this Podcast applies to your day-to-day and earn free AMA PRA Category 1 CMEs: https://earnc.me/VJvXZx --- SHOW NOTES First, Dr. Glaucomflecken shares about his first diagnosis of testicular cancer. During his third year of medical school he felt a lump in his testicle, which led to a quick workup, diagnosis, and a full orchiectomy. The diagnosis was emotionally difficult, as he was in his mid-twenties and healthy. He returned to comedy, a skill he had developed in high school and college, to cope with his diagnosis. This time, however, he started to practice medical-based comedy with his new experiences as a medical student. He recounts other discussions he had about his cancer, such as fertility, the possibility of chemotherapy, and active surveillance. Four years after his first orchiectomy, he received his second diagnosis of testicular cancer during his last year of residency. He recounts feeling distraught and overwhelmed, as questions about fertility, hormone replacement, medical expenses, and postponing residency became more serious. He decided to have a full orchiectomy and testosterone replacement therapy, which solved his issues with fatigue and irritability. Additionally, his wife got him involved in testicular cancer support groups and foundations, including one called First Descents, an organization that encourages young adults with cancer to explore the outdoors. He notes that young patients are often overlooked in cancer support groups and encourages cancer patients to find their support networks outside of friends and family as well. Then, Dr. Flanary discusses his experience with suffering from cardiac arrest in 2020, which led to his wife doing ten minutes of chest compressions to keep him alive. He reflects on this event and concludes that it taught him how to be a better physician to his patients by making sure he involves patients' families and encouraging him to address medical insurance issues directly. Finally, Dr. Flanary discusses how he uses humor to advocate and educate patients on social media. He notes that comedy can stimulate conversation and debate and encourages physicians to have social media presence. --- RESOURCES Knock Knock Hi Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/knock-knock-hi-with-the-glaucomfleckens/id1659572053 First Descents https://firstdescents.org/

Hook & Arrow have premiered 2 seasonal sauces in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Strawberry Ghost and Blueberry Ghost were new sauces they have introduced on October 1st and we were lucky enough to try them. These are probably the most unique sauces we have based on the heavy lean into fruit flavor, and we were here for it. Our conversations covered their causes, the food pairing possibilities, and a dinosaur issue for Mike. Brad Ludden – Professional Athlete & Founder – First Descents Brad Ludden was born in Wyoming and raised in Northwest Montana. He has always spent his days outside through all four seasons, across continents and on some of the world's most remote rivers, charting unexplored territory. His love and passion for adventure and the outdoors led him to become a professional whitewater kayaker. At the age of 12, Brad saw his aunt endure breast cancer. He began volunteering for a local oncology program by teaching participants how to kayak. It was at this moment that the idea for First Descents was born, a nonprofit organization that provides free life-changing outdoor adventures to young adults impacted by cancer. He is also the founder of Stoke Broker, a company that creates life-defining outdoor adventures. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by former Trek Vlogger, Sophia "Wheelz" Garber. Wheelz was a member of the AT NOBO turned NOGO class of 2020, due to the pandemic- duh. Her shot at redemption didn't have to wait too long, as Sophia ended up completing her mission to hike the AT the very next year. We learn what it was like to be on trail during the early days of the pandemic, how it felt to deal with social media trolls when trying to decide whether to stay or go (and the challenge of even getting off trail), the role Sophia's recently deceased friend played in her motivation to hike, and how thru-hiking compared to Sophia's 4,000-mile bikepacking trip just a couple years prior. Things fall off the rails a bit in the segments, as we answer a couple of listener voicemail questions, do a triple crown of thru-hiker no-no's, and a listener accuses Chaunce of having stinky privates. Research shows that about 50% of the people living with MS will develop another chronic health condition, or comorbidity, in their lifetime. Whether it's high blood pressure, diabetes, or something else, living with comorbid conditions adds extra challenges to living with MS. Joining me to discuss how comorbidities affect people living with MS and what you can do to avoid developing some of those comorbidities is one of the leading experts on the subject, Dr. Ruth Ann Marrie. We're also talking about why a Phase 2 clinical trial for a prospective MS disease-modifying therapy got a do-over. We'll share some very encouraging news about how the enrollment for a new study turned out. We'll also share results from a study in the U.K. that remind us why everyone living with MS needs to be vaccinated and boosted. We'll give you the registration info for this year's series of First Descents (no cost!) outdoor adventures for young adults living with MS. And we'll tell you how to register for the National MS Society's virtual 2022 Public Policy Conference. We have a lot to talk about! Are you ready for RealTalk MS??! For this year's holiday gift, Troika Media Group sent out a different kind of offering: A non-fungible token, or NFT, created by Venice, Calif.-based artist Claire Salvo. Recipients could quickly and easily sign up for their own crypto wallet on Troika's marketplace, Redeeem, and then download Salvo's unique NFT, which is a realistic drawing in pencil of a disco ball in recline. Those who wanted to sell their NFT could donate a percentage of the proceeds to First Descents, a charity selected by Salvo. In this episode of The Daily Brief Podcast, Salvo is joined by Kevin Aratari, Troika's head of new business development, and Zach Jacobs, Troika IO's head of entertainment to discuss the holiday giveaway, what NFTs have meant to her as an artist and to the artistic community as a whole, and what we should all expect to happen next in the NFT, Web3 and metaverse in 2022.
Throughout her life, Katie ‘Emoji' Doble has found herself a statistical outlier. In her teens, she lost her mother to cancer, in her 20's she caught an STD as a virgin, in her 30's she was diagnosed with a very rare terminal cancer. Finally, she's met her 40's being declared disease-free. Each of those events has taken its toll, but they've also given her perspective on the importance of addressing your emotions, giving yourself grace, and setting boundaries. How does she maintain positivity in the face of hardship? By embracing the Zero Excuses mentality, meeting her emotions head-on, and removing things in her life that don't bring her joy. For teens and young adults with cancer or multiple sclerosis, navigating these diseases in the prime of their life is a lonely endeavor. Ryan O'Donoghue is on a mission to create impact through life-changing outdoor adventures. “That rock doesn't care that you have cancer; those rapids aren't going to mellow out. They're not treating you any differently.” After losing his brother, Colin, to cancer at age 28, Ryan founded Rise Above It, an organization committed to advancing the field of adolescent and young adult oncology. Now, he serves as CEO for both First Descents and their for-profit subsidiary, Stoke Broker. Through each of these companies, and with a Zero Excuses mentality, Ryan is helping young adults with serious health conditions overcome their perceived limitations and regain their self-confidence.

Have you ever wondered what it's like when a doctor becomes a patient? I thought I was unlucky when I got breast cancer but then I spoke to my next guest, the American ophthalmologist Dr Will Flanary. He had testicular cancer twice - first a med student and then as a junior doctor. But that's not all. In 2020 Will had a cardiac arrest and his amazing wife did CPR for ten minutes to bring him back to life. We spoke about how he's used his comedy alter-ego Doctor Glaucomflecken to cope with everything life has thrown at him. Will is fund-raising for First Descents, a charity that provides free outdoor adventures for young adults impacted by cancer and other serious health conditions. He donates all his speaking fees to the organisation in aim to raise $50,000. You can read more about Will's story here: https://www.drgcomedy.com/bio and watch his hilarious videos here. The Mayo Clinic researched users on FluidStance's Level and found that users expend 19.2% more energy on FluidStance's product compared to sitting and more than standing alone. Another third-party study found that 83% of users were happier at their desk on a FluidStance product and users could stand an estimated one-hour longer than standing on their own. Most recently, Heath led Decker's 51% Teva brand sales growth turnaround as Marketing Director and Brand President (2009-2013). Have you ever tried to tell your story while in the middle of it? Seeing the light and lessons can be challenging in hindsight let alone while living it. Ruth Kavanagh who is currently fighting, surviving, and thriving with brain cancer shares her message of hope, courage, and strength in the midst of metastasis. She is a true warrior advocating for others even while she is in the throes of her own treatment. Our souls were touched and tissues were wet during this recording. Be prepared for tears, laughs, goosebumps, and inspiration. We caution you that this is an emotionally powerful episode, please be in a safe space while listening. In this episode: Traumatic vs. Acquired Brain Injury Traumatic- from an outside injury or force, i.e. car crash, hitting head, concussion Acquired- an internal factor, i.e. lack of oxygen, aneurysm, stroke, infection, brain tumor Ruth Kavanaugh's story Thriver, survivor, fighter! Listen to your body, it will tell you if something is wrong Anaplastic Ependymoma: one of the rarest forms of brain tumor, only about 2% of brain tumors are this type. It is cancerous and extremely aggressive. Because it is so rare there is little research or treatment options. Ruth set her mind that she will get through this If you go online, make sure it is a reputable site (see below for suggestions) Radiation therapy Caused extreme fatigue Life after treatment: too tired to do anything and left to your own thoughts. Can be a very dark time. Taking care of your emotional and mental health Remove the stigma. There is zero harm in seeing a counselor. Only good will come from it. You've got nothing to lose! Important to “date around” and find a counselor/psychiatrist who is the right fit The cancer chaos “Scan-xiety” is a real thing. Cancer survivors, you are not alone when you feel anxious about upcoming scans Recurrence More discussions in tumor boards, consultations, surgeries, and therapies Stereotactic radiotherapy Avastin- side effects bleeding and prevention of wound healing Infection Loss during hard times Revisional surgeries Metastasis, only 25 cases known in the world that spread the way Ruthie's has More chemo Lessons for healthcare professionals: listen to your patient, don't make pre-judgements, be very cognizant of where the patient is now rather than basing all judgement on your past experience with the patient, sitting with a patient lowers the power divide (standing over a patient is very intimidating and strengthens a patriarchal model of care), respect the person as a person (not just a condition) Self-advocacy is advocacy for those who don't have a voice. By standing up, telling your story, and advocating for better care; you can serve to stand up for those who can't do it for themselves and help others. “I'm tired, but there is hope!” Strength, courage, and hope through extended trauma “There's always hope. It doesn't necessarily mean that there is going to be a magical cure. At the age of 13, Brad's parents told him he could do anything he wanted with his life. He took it literally and did the thing he loved the most – whitewater kayaking.By 18 he was living his dream; he had signed on as Nike's first sponsored whitewater kayaker, was on the cover of Outside Magazine, travelling the globe in search of first descents on remote rivers, and filming with the largest production companies in the outdoor industry.Despite all of his success, something was missing. Brad felt he needed to find a way to share the bounty of positive effects whitewater kayaking had had on his life by giving the gift of outdoor adventure to others who needed it more. He settled on young adults with cancer after watching his Aunt fight the disease a few years earlier and First Descents was born.Thirteen years later, First Descents–an organisation that provides free outdoor adventure therapy to young adults with cancer–has helped over 2,000 young adults live beyond their disease by providing them with free multi-day adventure experiences.—Recorded live at the global event in California, USA in 2013.Watch Brad's full talk here: www.thedolectures.com/talks/brad-ludden-waterman-with-soul
BGBS Episode 002: Out Living It…Fighting the Cancer Epidemic with AdventureWhen you're in your 20s, time is spent on holding down a job, making friends, and paying rent. On top of all that, could you imagine having to fight cancer at that age? About 70,000 young adults are diagnosed annually with cancer. Fortunately, Brad Ludden, a professional kayaker, created an organization called First Descents (FD). It leverages the healing power of adventure to help young adults diagnosed with cancer. The physical, social, and emotional transformation for participants is real and powerful. You'll Learn… Quality of life that growing up in the mountains and with nature offers Brad started kayaking at 9 – spent much of the time being scared and crying; eventually, he fell in love with the sport and became obsessed with it Brad's first experience with cancer (aunt's diagnosis) – wanted to help, but didn't know how to; it inspired him to create FD Brad started to teach kids with cancer how to kayak because of how much positivity and growth it brought to his life; could be transformational for them Kayaking helps cancer patients rise to the challenge and obstacle of the river and apply what they learn about themselves to recovery from cancer Society treats people differently after the diagnosis (like they're fragile), but the river doesn't discern – treats everyone equally, empowers them to face their fight Cancer creates a sense of isolation and alienation; outdoor adventures are catalysts that create a tribe around a shared experience of cancer People, passion, and processes involved in starting FD and making it successful; research now supports such alternative ways of healing Importance of nicknames to differentiate participants and develop a new identity other than the cancer patient Resources: First Descents Stoke Broker Lonesome Dove Quotes by Brad Ludden: “Rivers are ever present. They're such a source of life around the world, and they are everywhere.” “It's (kayaking) all I knew. It's the one gift I had to give.” “Most good things in life come with challenges (such as kayaking). I just knew that if we could deliver this experience in a positive way to people with cancer, that it could be transformational.” “That sense of accomplishment and growth and transformation is very real.”
Frankly Speaking About Cancer with the Cancer Support Community
Summertime is a time when people take time off from work and children and young adults take time off from school to experience new challenges, embark on adventures and just have fun. But for people impacted by cancer taking time off from cancer may seem impossible and improbable. It could be that taking time off from cancer is just what is called for though. Perhaps it brings benefits you might not find otherwise. In Part 2 of our special series, Take a break from cancer, we talk about taking a break from cancer with Brad Ludden, Founder of First Descents.
