La Raza Database Research Project is bringing awareness to police violence against Latinos. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: You wouldn't know it from the data, but Latinos are the second most likely demographic to be killed by law enforcement in the U.S, relative to their population. We only have these statistics now thanks to the work of La Raza Database Research Project, a group of volunteers in Southern California who are bringing awareness to systematic police violence against the Latino population. They estimate that almost 6,500 Latinos have been killed by police between 2000 and 2022 – but the data has been missing until this moment. In this unusual installment of our monthly “Meet the BIPOC Press” series, Laura and Senior Producer Jeremiah Cothren sit down with LF&F Social Justice Reporting Fellow, Roberto Camacho, who interviewed members of the Research Project to figure out why Latinos are so frequently misrepresented. Camacho also spoke with the mother and sister of César Antonio Rodriguez, a young man tragically killed by the Long Beach Police Dept in 2017 and misidentified in police records. Camacho is a Chicano multimedia journalist focusing on criminal justice reform, immigration and Chicano/Latino issues. He originally reported on this story for Palabra.Guests:• Ivette Xochiyotl Boyzo: Research Project Manager, La Raza Database• Roberto Camacho: Journalist; Social Justice Reporting Fellow, Laura Flanders & Friends• Jeremiah Cothren (Co-host): Senior Producer, Laura Flanders & Friends• Jesus M. This week we have an interesting in studio discussion on managing whitetails with biologist, and well-known bow hunter, Matt Brock. Matts worked for the states of Mississippi and Alabama and has seen a lot of habitat and ideas. We discuss trail cameras, bottomland versus upland habitat, coyotes and predator management, rainfall amounts and its effect on management practices, tried-and-true strategies he's acquired over the years, managing expectations, and more. He also tells the story of how his dog, while blood-trailing a deer, got into Temik AND his inadvertent exposure to it while caring for his dog. Matt came very close to having a tragic ending. It's a hard story for him to tell but we hope someone can learn from it. At the end, he pulls out a jungle carpet python and tells us about his love of reptiles. It's a great discussion. In the shadow of the pandemic more people than ever have shared their struggles with anxiety. On In The Market with Janet Parshall this week we heard from a man who shared his own struggle with these issues to teach us what it looks like practically to lean hard on God to help and guide you through these daily struggles. It is hard for believers to understand how those who profess faith could chose to take their own lives. We examined the issues of suicide with a respected therapist who explained how to minister to those who are struggling with suicidal thoughts and whether or not suicide is an unpardonable sin in God’s eyes. We turned our eyes toward the Middle East as we got an update on how God is making hearts fertile for the hope of the Gospel in this worn torn and ravaged nation. We also heard how assisted suicide is being repackaged to make it more palatable and acceptable as a legitimate medical treatment. We live in a time that despite the efforts of the Women’s Lib and ERA movements, the role of women is often devalued by the culture at large. Is that the way God intended it to be? A very well respected apologist and friend to the program joined us once again to take us back to scripture to see what God has to say about the role of women in the world and what can we learn about this from the lives of the Godly women whose stories we find in the pages of scripture. The news never stops and neither does our need to understand it through the critical lens of scripture. Join our husband and wife team as they continue teaching us how to use God’s word to understand what’s happening in the world around us.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
