Dean Battinto Batts and Professor Julia Wallace from Arizona State University join us to talk about the recent launch of the Knight Center for the Future of News at ASU's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The Knight Center for the Future of News focuses on creating sustainable models and innovative practices for the journalism industry through three core initiatives: the Journalism, Community & Democracy Lab; the Sustainability Lab; and the Innovation in Reporting & Storytelling Lab.Dean Batts and Prof. Wallace emphasize the importance of adapting to the changing dynamics of news consumption and audience engagement, recognizing that while the industry faces significant challenges, there is still a strong demand for credible information. With the support of a $10.5 million grant from Knight Foundation, The Knight Center for the Future of News will foster innovation, research, and collaboration to ensure a sustainable future for journalism. The center will function as a dynamic environment akin to a teaching hospital, where real-world applications and student mentorship converge to test new journalism concepts. Students will actively participate in hands-on projects, working with professionals to innovate in journalism.Batts and Wallace express optimism about the role of education and new initiatives in reshaping the field, urging a shift in mindset to view disruption as an opportunity rather than a setback. Read the transcript and notes for this episode on our website. Key Takeaways The transformation of journalism education at ASU reflects the evolving state of the industry. In the past, news was seen as objective reporting on issues that directly impacted people's lives. Today's news environment is characterized by outrage, polarization, and a decline in trust. Arizona State University's Cronkite School has a longstanding partnership with the Knight Foundation, which supports various initiatives aimed at revolutionizing journalism education and practice. Central to the Knight Center's mission is the engagement and understanding of audiences, vital for fostering trust and ensuring the relevance of news media. In today's world, environmental degradation, resource depletion, and growing waste generation are clear indicators that the conventional linear economy is not sustainable. Battery storage systems, however, present a unique opportunity for change. Their materials are highly recyclable and this value can be extracted either through material recovery or second-life applications. However significant challenges remain in the recycling process.Transitioning batteries into a circular economy is essential for long-term sustainability. While recycling technology exists, the biggest hurdles include ensuring a steady supply of used batteries and establishing efficient connections between suppliers and recyclers. Scaling operations is also critical. Only by increasing the volume of recycled materials can costs be reduced, making the process both economically viable and environmentally impactful.William Bergh, CEO at Cling Systems, joins Quentin to discuss the challenges in battery recycling. Over the course of the conversation, they discuss:What the physical process of material separation and recycling process looks like. The current state of the recycling market and a look at the supply chain for it. The complexities of battery recycling and the role Cling plays in facilitating these processes.Regional differences and challenges in the global battery recycling market. The importance of data availability in allowing the efficient recycling and repurposing of batteries.About our guestBy streamlining procurement and removing market frictions, Cling's circular platform helps both battery repurposers to build safe and cost effective second life energy systems, and battery recyclers to produce new recycled raw material.Cling Systems are ensuring batteries are effectively directed to their best use —whether for second life and recycling or by leveraging strategic off-take agreements and a global network. Cling have made it their mission to offer a sustainable framework that not only mitigates environmental harm but also fosters economic growth and social well-being. Billy Batts' murder is one of the most notorious events in mafia history, symbolizing the violent consequences of crossing the wrong person in the mob world. Batts, a respected associate of the Gambino crime family, made the fatal mistake of insulting Tommy DeSimone, a volatile member of the Lucchese family, during a celebratory party. This seemingly minor slight set off a brutal chain of events, with DeSimone, Jimmy Burke, and Henry Hill savagely beating Batts, stuffing him into the trunk of a car, and ultimately killing him in cold blood. His murder wasn't just about personal revenge—it violated the mafia's sacred rules and became a deadly example of what happens when power, ego, and respect clash within the mob.The fallout from Batts' death had far-reaching consequences. His murder helped expose the inner workings of New York's criminal underworld and contributed to the eventual downfall of key mafia figures like Burke and DeSimone. Decades later, Billy Batts' death is still remembered as a pivotal moment in mob history, illustrating the fragile, dangerous nature of life within organized crime. His story serves as a grim reminder that in the mafia, the line between loyalty and betrayal is thin, and crossing it often leads to violent and tragic consequences.(commercial at 8:56)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

In episode 7, I told you the first part of the story of 12-year-old Alex Hurley. I provided updates on Alex's case throughout the next three years. This past week, the last family member charged in Alex's death was finally sentenced, so I'm revisiting Alex's story in an all-new, comprehensive episode like I've never told it before. On February 3, 2020, first responders were summoned to a home in West Yellowstone, Montana, where they found 12-year-old Alex Hurley dead on the living room floor, battered and malnourished. Five people aged 14 to 48, including four paternal family members, were arrested and charged with various crimes surrounding Alex's long-term systematic torture and eventual murder. In this episode, I'll tell you Alex's story as thoroughly as possible from start to finish. You'll also hear my recent conversation with Alex's mom, Alicia Davis, who told me all about the happy, active boy she nicknamed “Bubba Brown.” This is the heartbreaking story of Alex Hurley, retold.
