Today BUZZ creator Michael Hemphill buzzes about a Blacksburg, Virginia nonprofit that provides hope to walk for thousands of amputees around the world. Appropriately named Hope to Walk, the nonprofit in May hopes to travel to Ukraine to provide prosthetic legs to some of the estimated 100,000 soldiers and civilians, women and children, who are now amputees because of the war. In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, FMEP Fellow Peter Beinart speaks with FMEP Fellow Ahmed Moor about child amputees in Gaza, now estimated to number 3,000-4,000, the highest number of child amputees per inhabitant in the world. They discuss how Israel's denial of medical supplies leads to amputation and what it's like to be a doctor in Gaza, and they analyze the effect these devastating injuries will have on Palestinian society. Ahmed recently published a detailed piece on this topic in the Guardian (3/27/25): There are more child amputees in Gaza than anywhere else in the world. What can the future hold for them? Ahmed Moor is a Palestinian-American writer born in Gaza and a 2025 Fellow at FMEP. He is an advisory board member of the US Campaign for Palestinian rights, co-editor of After Zionism (Saqi Books) and is currently writing a book about Palestine. He also currently serves on the board of the Independence Media Foundation. His work has been published in The Guardian, The London Review of Books, The Nation, and elsewhere. He earned a BA at the University of Pennsylvania and an MPP at Harvard University. Peter Beinart is a Non-Resident Fellow at the Foundation for Middle East Peace. He is also a Professor of Journalism and Political Science at the City University of New York, a Contributing opinion writer at the New York Times, an Editor-at-Large at Jewish Currents, and an MSNBC Political Commentator. The Reality of the Numbers and What We Can Do About It   The stats on amputees is staggering. In the US 1 in 200 people have undergone amputation! Over 2.1 million people live with an amputated limb. Worldwide, 1 million ampuatations happen annually, that's 1 amputation every 30 seconds!!!   1 EVERY 30 SECONDS! We reach the final part of this month's four part series on Working with Athletes with Disabilities, in which we are joined by special guests Rich Potter and Rich 'Dickie' Davies – armed forces veterans and single below leg amputees who set world records at the end of last year on their ‘Limb-itless Expedition: Conquering The Himalayas' as the first ever amputees to achieve the half and full length of The Snowman Trek in Bhutan. With them are Sports Therapist Carla Bickerstaffe and Massage Therapist Jenny Lane, both of whom have considerable experience of working with athletes with disabilities. Billy Monger's ambition to become a professional racing driver looked like it had come to a serious and tragic end when a crash on the track aged 17 resulted in both his legs being amputated - one above knee, one below. Talking with Emma Tracey, he looks back at how life changed after the accident, and the challenges he's put himself through since then. After breaking it to his parents his racing career wasn't over, he was back on the track within months. A retired U.S. Army colonel has spent decades studying pain relief for war veterans. Dr Steven Cohen, professor of anesthesiology and pain medicine at Northwestern University, recently returned from Ukraine where he helped launch a groundbreaking study on post-amputation pain.

David Lynch left this world on Jan. 16, 2025 at a time when we were all coping with way too much tragedy. While Lynch's drugs of choice were coffee and cigarettes (along with griddle cakes drenched in maple syrup), we pay tribute to him by pairing weed with a selection of his short films and THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939), a movie he was so obsessed with that there's a whole documentary about it. For Lynch's short films, we mostly focus on THE GRANDMOTHER (1970), a 33-minute student film where an abused boy cultivates his own grandma out of a disgusting tree he grows in his bedroom, kind of like using hydroponics to grow weed in your closet. How we didn't make this joke during the episode, we'll never know, but we're doing it now--kinda. Philena was way into both versions of THE AMPUTEE (1974), where Catherine Coulson (the Log Lady from TWIN PEAKS) writes angry breakup letters while a nurse dresses the gushing wound from her severed leg. Because Lynch never gave up on the short film as a means of expression, Bob brings up the more recent WHAT DID JACK DO? (2017) where Lynch trades cliches with a tormented monkey who has the hots for a chicken named Toototabon. THE GRANDMOTHER and THE AMPUTEE are streaming on Criterion Channel, and WHAT DID JACK DO? is streaming on Netflix. And for the WIZARD OF OZ (1939), Greg goes that extra dad rock mile by muting the volume and playing Pink Floyd's DARK SIDE OF THE MOOON over it because somebody had to do it, and that somebody is GREG FRANKLIN. Greg had to leave a little early, so there's a lot of him at the front of this discussion for all you Franklin fanatics out there. We do talk about Alexandre O. Philippe's documentary LYNCH/OZ (2022), but THE WIZARD OF OZ is too big a phenomenon to see it only through that prism. So we discuss the movie's tortured production, the Culver City little person fuck fest that was the Munchkin Land shoot, and the sheer artistry of the MGM musical fantasy classic. From the makeup to the music, where do you begin? Where do you stop? Well, Cory, Bob and Philena stopped by marveling at the tremendous acting ability of Terry, the Cairn Terrier who played Toto. Boris Shtonda was injured in a Hamas booby trapped building on November 10th 2023. Five days later, he woke up from an induced coma to learn that his leg had been amputated above the knee. Since his injury and rehabilitation, he has travelled to numerous countries where he's snorkelled, trekked, snowboarded and picked up a running prosthetic. But his greatest physical challenge yet, will be his climb up Mt Kilimanjaro later this month. At the age of 14, Todd Huston's legs got caught in the propeller of a boat and would eventually lead to one of them being amputated. Todd became a psychotherapist and clinical director of the Amputee Resource Center in California. He used his professional skills and personal experiences to help patients achieve more in their lives. To prove that anyone can overcome challenges he completed a world-record-setting Summit America expedition by climbing to the highest elevations of all 50 states in only 66 days 22 hours and 47 minutes, shattering the original record by 35 days. He is featured in the new documentary, “The Power of Sports for Amputees.”

It's funny the things that get to you when witnessing the nightmare in Gaza, out of all the horrors you'll see there from day to day. Today I saw a video of a six year-old Palestinian boy whose legs had been amputated dragging himself through his tent camp with the help of a roller skate worn on one of his hands, and it just about destroyed me. In this episode, recorded on December 12th, 2024, I sit down with IDF veteran, amputee and hero, Boris Shtonda, whose leg was amputated as a result of a catastrophic injury he sustained inside the Gaza Strip following the October 7th massacre. Boris tells me about his career in the IDF elite counter-terror unit, Duvdevan, his work as a close protection officer where he guarded over Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, Vladimir Putin, Former Head of Mossad Yossi Cohen and others and how his life changed after October 7th. Hearing the news of the Hamas rampage while on vacation in Japan, Boris flew home, joined his unit, was injured and began his journey back to a functioning and fulfilling life. He shares what Judaism says about amputations, what he feels are his next missions in life and his ambition to make history by climbing Mt. Resilience and Recon: The Inspiring Journey of Davey Lind In this week's Team Never Quit episode, Marcus and Melanie meet with Master Sergeant Davey Lind, a United States Marine, combat veteran, and motivational leadership speaker whose life story is a testament to resilience, courage, and the power of perseverance. Born and raised in Titusville, Pennsylvania, Davey embarked on his military journey immediately after high school, joining the Marine Corps in 1989. Over the years, he honed his skills and leadership as a Recon Marine, serving in pivotal roles from scout to team leader and participating in key operations, including Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom, and the Iraq War. On June 14, 2007, Davey's life changed forever when a pressure plate IED in Iraq led to the loss of his legs below the knees. Incredibly, he took his first steps just two months after the injury and has continued to inspire others with his unyielding spirit and dedication to recovery and service. Today, Davey is a sought-after motivational speaker, sharing lessons learned from the battlefield and life, focusing on leadership, adaptability, and grit. He resides in Corona, California, with his wife Lisa and their four children, where he continues to make a difference in the private sector with his involvement with PXG Golf. It became a great outlet for him and something to look forward to. He is actively involved in helping veterans heal in the context of golf outings and they have made more friends and memories from various golf adventures. Join us as we dive into Davey's incredible journey, from the challenges of combat to overcoming life-altering injuries and emerging as a beacon of strength and inspiration.  In This Episode You Will Hear: • 35 in the Marine Corps, that's old. (14:04) • We were part of a surge in the summer of '07, and my vehicle struck and activated a pressure plate IED. This IED went off directly underneath me, and from that blast I became a double leg amputee. (15:02) • I rolled over on my back to try to use my left leg to push, and when I tried to do that, that's when I realized my left leg was gone. (24:50) • I'm married, I have kids, I have goals, and I was immediately aware of how challenging my life was gonna be. (25:17) • As a platoon sergeant, I was armed with both a rifle and pistol. That pistol was on my hip, and I had the conscious thought to end my life right there. I could do it before they could finish working on me. (25:33) • I had a very clear moment of calming, reflection of “everybody did their best.” I'm just gonna die here on the battlefield. (26:54) • My initial assessment was “You're gonna walk in about 10 months to a year. (33:32) • Being in a wheelchair, even as a gunny, is like the kids table at Thanksgiving. Nobody's talking to you; they're talking about you. (35:08) • There's a great relationship you have to have with your prosthetic doctor. The fit has to be tight, but not too tight. Then there's alignment. There's a lot that goes into it. (37:39) • Guys like me – a double leg amputee, I call guys that are single leg below the knee – we refer to that as a paper cut. (38:48) • Perspective is everything. (39:35) • I was able to retire though, which is important because I did a full 20 years, 6 months, and 3 days of active duty time. Just eight months ago, Brie Bauer was 27-weeks pregnant with her third child when suddenly a life-threatening infection changed her life forever. After experiencing flu-like symptoms, Brie delivered a premature but healthy baby boy before spending the next 10 days in a coma where her body fought off streptococcal toxic shock syndrome from group A streptococcus. With her strength and willpower tested, she made a brave choice that redefined her life in ways she never imagined: amputate her four limbs that didn't receive enough blood and oxygen. Today, Brie shares how she's learning to embrace a “new normal” as she navigates life as a wife and mother of three. The Civil War wrought horrible devastation on its soldiers: Nearly 500,000 were wounded by bullets, shrapnel or sabers and bayonets. Medicine was still primited, and often a doctor could do little more than amputee an injured limb. As a result, thousands of veterans were left missing one to four limbs, yet still needed to attempt providing for their families despite few job prospects and even fewer resources available to the disable3d.
