Kareemah Ashiru talks about growing up in Lagos, Nigeria, and then moving to the U.S. and attending high school in Toledo, Ohio as one of the only Muslims in her school.  She explains how her love of travel developed growing up, and how she navigated her strict parents who had traditional cultural expectations in order to pursue her dreams of living abroad and traveling the world.  Kareemah shares some of her travel highlights from Spain, the Basque Country, Turkey, Morocco, and Peru, including her experiences connecting with the local Muslim communities.  She then talks about founding Hijabi Globetrotter as an online platform to highlight underrepresented travel stories from a Muslim perspective and reflects on how it has grown and evolved over the years. Corporate investing in oil and gas are actually going for Cybersecurity and IoT having a footprint in multiple sectors and taking part in high-growth sectors, according to Aruna. Even as an entrepreneur, you need to have a long-term perspective and your solution gains attraction having a multi-sector usability. Technology transfer is important, and at the same time can be very complicated - so what about the Oil&Gas sector. Are people/ideas/startups stuck? Well, it is probably both - you need sector specific technology as well as universal solutions. Being multi-domain it is easier to find interested investors and funding. The energy transition is a huge opportunity for all and carries a big importance for our joint future.Hopefully this discussion can give some sparks to fuel your ideas, development and contributions for the energy transition and innovation required for the future in a collaborative manner. Going through a traumatic experience is kind of like putting your life through a sieve. Certain things and people will inevitably fall away, but what’s leftover is what’s important and what stays. In 2009, Kareemah was diagnosed with cancer and underwent an amputation on her left leg below the knee. Three years later, she founded Adaptive Climbing Group. This episode is about strength in visibility and what happens when the narrative shifts from; “you don’t belong here” to “you belong here, you exist, and you matter”.

Today's guest is Kareemah Batts. Kareemah is an adaptive climber based in New York City with one incredible story. She was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer back in 2009 and was forced to have one of her legs amputated to save her life. A climbing trip out to Colorado profoundly changed her life. After this moving experience, she founded the Adaptive Climbing Group and made it her mission to provide the same kind of opportunities for other adaptive climbers to experience what she did in Colorado. She tells her story so well, you can't help but be moved by it. In the end she says it's not about what makes us different. In this episode we talk with Kareemah Fowler who currently serves as Clerk for the City of South Bend. Kareemah moved to South Bend's South East side as a senior in high school and quickly gained a burden for changing the city's culture. Our conversation centers around how her entrepreneurial ventures (like buying 9 houses straight out of high school) and city government roles have pushed South Bend to be a place where opportunity abounds for all people in all neighborhoods.

In her late twenties, Kareemah Batts was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma, a super rare cancer that strikes young adults. Rather than endure multiple surgeries to battle the illness, Kareemah opted for amputation of her left leg below the knee. In her recovery, the New York City native discovered a passion for climbing and uncovered a penchant for defying the odds. As founder of the Adaptive Climbing Group, she has provided inspirational pathways for fellow amputees and adaptive climbers to discover the sport and has worked tirelessly to help redefine athleticism in the climbing culture.

Kareemah Batts is many things. A woman. A climber. An African American. A cancer survivor. An amputee. A self-described “broke girl from Flatbush.” She’s not just one thing. After being overlooked for conversations about diversity in the outdoor community, Kareemah decided to jumpstart a new conversation — she wants to expand the outdoor community’s definition of diversity and to rethink how we approach inclusivity.
