I was raised Mormon, got some cancer, and then converted to Judaism. Why? Well, it's complicated and it's the basis for the documentary film ‘Latter Day Jew,' available soon on video on demand on a number of platforms. Today I'm sharing my story, because it's a weird one, but it's also how I became H. Alan Scott. I'll be joined by writer, comedian and my best friend, Eliot Glazer (‘Broad City'), who was with me during the entire process. People certainly do have opinions about "You People," the interracial, interfaith Netflix romcom scripted by Kenya Barris and Jonah Hill. But we're putting reviews on hold (tune in next week!) to go behind the scenes with Todd Shotz, the Jewish consultant on this controversial production. He's also a film producer and founder of the b'nai mitzvah prep company Hebrew Helpers. How did Todd land this gig? How did he advise the producers on creating the big Yom Kippur scene from the beginning of the movie? And why is there a Yiddish consultant in the credits, but no Yiddish scene in the movie? This episode of The Bagel Report is sponsored by the Jewish Film Institute, whose WinterFest event is coming up Feb. 25-26 at the Vogue Theater in San Francisco.Connect with us on socials!Twitter: @estherk, @ebenmoche and @TheBagelReportInstagram: @estherkustanowitz, @ebenmoche and @tbrthepod Email us at: thebagelreport@gmail.comOther links for this episode:Background Bagels — our episode last year recapping our days as background actorsHebrew HelpersRecipe for ChangeThe Grotto (film)Lazy Eye (film)Latter Day Jew (film)Kevin Misher (You People producer)

Just like the queer experience, what it means to be Jewish is dramatically changing. TV writer and comedian H. Alan Scott has a new documentary, Latter Day Jew, that captures this change as Scott, a former Mormon, converts to Judaism, prepares for their bar mitzvah, and tries to figure out exactly what being Jewish looks like for them on a personal level. On this week's episode, H. Alan Scott talks about surviving cancer, why they're uncomfortable with how gendered Judaism is, and how that gendering is something that will hopefully fade away. LGBTQ&A is hosted and produced by Jeffrey Masters. @jeffmasters1

This week in 'News of the Jews,' Israel's new Education Minister endorsed gay conversion therapy, a controversial and widely discredited practice. We're bringing you an interview (recorded before those comments were made) with Mathew Shurka founder of Born Perfect, an organization that lobbies against conversion therapy. Mathew tells us about his own experience—he spent five years in conversion therapy as a teen—and how he found his calling in activism after an 'It Gets Better' video he recorded in 2012 went viral. Our Gentile of the Week, recorded at our Chicago live show last month, is Greta Johnsen, who hosts the Nerdette podcast and anchors Weekend Edition Saturday on WBEZ Chicago. She tells the audience at the Logan Square Auditorium what it means to be a nerdette, shares her favorite moments of the podcast, and asks the hosts a question about Jewish food.
