#776 - Helen Lavretsky, MD, MS - Living From The Soul: The Neuroscience of Spiritual Awakening

The Grimerica Show

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 19, 2026 89:37

Interview starts at 27:10   The neuroscience of spiritual awakening, how Kundalini yoga shaped her life, and why she believes listening inward is especially important in a time of cultural confusion. She also explains how her work in geriatric psychiatry connects spirituality, brain health, stress regulation, and prevention strategies for aging populations. Helen Lavretsky, MD, MS, is a Professor In-Residence in the Department of Psychiatry at UCLA (Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior), a leading geriatric integrative psychiatrist, and a pioneer in mind-body approaches to late-life mental health. https://drhelenlavretsky.com/book/living-from-the-soul/ https://drhelenlavretsky.com/about/   In this episode: Dr. Helen Lavretsky shares her unusual path from the former Soviet Union into psychiatry, neuroscience, and later Kundalini yoga teacher training. She explains how growing up in an atheist Soviet environment still left room for underground spirituality passed through families and oral tradition. She describes a six-month temporary enlightenment experience after Kundalini practice and why it was physically intense, hard to describe, and initially unsustainable. The conversation focuses on her book Living from the Soul and the idea that people are increasingly being pushed to trust their own wisdom instead of outside authorities. She discusses how spirituality shows up in geriatric psychiatry, especially for older adults, dementia caregivers, and long COVID patients dealing with mortality and stress. She argues that meditation, breathing practices, yoga, tai chi, and qigong can improve self-regulation, brain health, and decision-making under pressure. She outlines how brain health should be cultivated across the lifespan, starting in childhood and even in utero, rather than only addressed later in life. She notes that lifestyle factors such as sleep, movement, diet, and stress management matter for dementia prevention and broader cognitive resilience. She emphasizes that meaning, purpose, and connection to soul are central to mental well-being. Key frameworks: Soul-based self-inquiry- asking inwardly what is right for you rather than defaulting to external authority Brain health across the lifespan- prevention beginning in childhood and even before birth Stress self-regulation toolkit- breathing, meditation, yoga, tai chi, and qigong as practical nervous-system supports Constitutional approach to diet- different people may need different foods based on ancestry, metabolism, and predisposition   Become a Lord or Lady with 1k donations over time. In this 150th episode, I speak with Rachel Uda Murdock, who is the creator behind the viral social media platform called “RachelLDSStorytime.” I wanted to chat with her about the unexpected insights she has gained while sharing the global history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in bite-sized, three-minute segments that uncover powerful and often unknown, faith-building accounts of members of the Church from every corner of the earth. Rachel turned a personal spiritual prompting into a thriving, multi-platform ministry that brings hidden global histories to light. We explore the deep spiritual resonance behind the global church, the vital role that storytelling plays in simplifying complex gospel doctrines, and the inspiring accounts of ordinary Latter-day Saints whose unwavering faith produced extraordinary miracles. Some highlights from this episode include: Celebrating 150 Episodes: Reflections on the journey of For All The Saints so far. From broadcasting out of the historic Downham countryside for episode 100 to exploring a shared kinship with Rachel over the profound impact of global storytelling. The Global Breakthrough of LDS Storytime: Rachel shares the organic, faith-led origin of her platform, detailing how she felt called to counter online negativity by shifting the digital focus away from localized cultural tropes and toward the inspiring reality of a truly international church. The Miraculous Foundations of the Church in Ghana: A deep dive into the inspiring story of Joseph William Billy Johnson, who spent 14 years gathered with ten unbaptized congregations in Ghana prior to the 1978 “all worthy male” priesthood revelation, anchored only by a single copy of the Book of Mormon and profound personal visions.Betrayal and Faith in 19th-Century Hawaii: The gripping historical account of the Hawaiian Latter-day Saints on the island of Lanai who were defrauded by the enigmatic Walter Murray Gibson, providing a powerful modern lesson on maintaining a testimony of the gospel even when church leaders fail. The Heavenly Translation of the Thai Princess: Revisiting the remarkable experiences of Srilaksana Suntarahut, the royal Thai translator who overcame severe spiritual opposition and witnessed miraculous manifestations while translating the Book of Mormon into her native tongue.A Milestone Invitation:  To celebrate the 150th episode, a special challenge for listeners to actively push back against digital noise by using the "town square" of social media to speak out, verbalize gratitude, and share personal moments where they have witnessed God's hand in their life and how it has blessed them. You can find Rachel's work and connect with LDS Storytime at the following links:Facebook, Instagram, TikTok & YouTube: @RachelLDSStorytimeFollow For All The Saints on social media for updates and inspiring content:www.instagram.com/forallthesaintspodhttps://www.facebook.com/forallthesaintspod/For All The Saints episodes are released every Monday on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and more:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVDUQg_qZIU&list=UULFFf7vzrJ2LNWmp1Kl-c6K9Qhttps://open.spotify.com/show/3j64txm9qbGVVZOM48P4HS?si=bb31d048e05141f2https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/for-all-the-saints/id1703815271If you have feedback or any suggestions for topics or guests, connect with Ben & Sean via hello@forallthesaints.org or DM on InstagramConversations to Refresh Your Faith.

Send us Fan MailNearly 24 hours in open water changes what you think you know about fear, focus, and what you are capable of. Ted Lomicka joins us from Franklin, Tennessee to tell the story of completing the Triple Maui Nui, a nonstop three channel swim from Lanai to Maui to Molokai and back again. Ted describes starting in a thunderstorm, navigating bioluminescent “stars” below when clouds hide the real ones, then facing cold brackish water near Molokai alongside the threat of a shark fin. At his lowest point, a captain's short question reframes the choice and gets him moving again. On the final leg, sensory deprivation gives way to awe when a baby humpback whale swims beneath him and meets his eye, a moment that turns endurance into meaning and seals the lesson: dream big, live the dream, and share the dream.Ted is also a healthcare executive and an adjunct professor at Vanderbilt University, so we zoom out from the ocean to the real world impact of innovation leadership. We dig into ambient AI scribes in healthcare, how AI drafted notes can improve physician patient communication, and why giving clinicians 30 to 90 minutes back each night can boost satisfaction, retention, and outcomes. Along the way, Ted shares how he evaluates new ideas: technologically feasible, clinically relevant, financially viable, and scalable, then pilot small and iterate fast. The heart of our conversation is mindset. Ted breaks down the framework behind his upcoming book, First Of Five: The Five Hammers Of A Do Anything Mindset, forged in ultra distance triathlon at the Anvil race series. We unpack the hammer of passion, humility, mindfulness, equanimity, and transcendence, plus the idea of overriding the “evolutionary governor” when your body insists it is done. If you care about endurance training, Ultraman, channel swimming in Hawaii, or performing under pressure at work, this one is built to stick with you.Subscribe for more stories like this, share the show with a friend who needs a bigger goal, and leave a review so more athletes and curious minds can find us. Then Jim looks back at Disney's repeated attempts to give Mickey Mouse a milestone birthday celebration big enough for the big screen, and why those plans often arrived late, changed shape, or became something else entirely. NEWS • Golden Girls returns to the bookstore with Death on the Lanai, the second mystery novel in Disney's sitcom-inspired series. • Target's Disney Fan Snacks line brings character-shaped chips to the aisle, including Darth Vader corn chips and Grogu-inspired flavors. • Toy Story 5 merch arrives early with Ginormous, a truly oversized plush pig that may require its own shopping cart. • Lauren checks out Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets merch, including Kermit keychains, Miss Piggy gear, and Animal-focused designs. • Walt Disney World's Logo Mania collections lean into color-coded Disney fan moments, from Last Day of Trip Blues to Popcorn on Main Street. Hosted on Acast. Lexi Reese has scaled companies at every stage — from building Google's programmatic advertising business, to helping Gusto grow revenue from $10M to $300M. Now she's co-founder and CEO of Lanai, an enterprise AI startup tackling a problem most companies don't even realize they have: they can't actually see how AI is being used inside their organizations, or whether it's driving real outcomes. In this episode, we unpack what it really looks like to build a company from scratch in the AI era. Lexi walks through how she ran more than 200 customer interviews before committing to a product direction, why product-market fit isn't real until someone is willing to pay, and how she's building a 14-person team — plus AI “teammates” — without losing focus or trust. We also talk about fundraising in a tougher 2025 market, why early founders need to resist the urge to build comprehensive solutions too soon, and how organizational design is already changing as AI flattens hierarchies and reshapes work. If you're thinking about starting a company — or you're in the messy middle of finding product-market fit — this conversation offers a practical roadmap for what actually matters. How to Safely and Strategically Adopt AI in Your Organization: Expert Insights from Lexi Reese, CEO of LanaiArtificial intelligence is reshaping the modern workplace faster than any technology before it. But as companies rush to integrate AI, many leaders struggle with how to adopt it responsibly—balancing innovation, security, and ethics. In this episode of The Thoughtful Entrepreneur, host Josh Elledge interviews Lexi Reese, Co-Founder and CEO of Lanai, an AI-native observability and security platform. Lexi shares practical insights on how organizations can safely manage, monitor, and scale AI adoption without compromising data integrity or trust.Leading AI Adoption ResponsiblyLexi explains that the most successful companies treat AI not just as a set of tools, but as part of their workforce—a powerful digital team member that requires oversight, structure, and accountability. She emphasizes that AI must be “hired” into an organization with defined roles, clear expectations, and measurable outcomes. Just as leaders track employee performance, they must also monitor how AI performs, adapts, and impacts real-world results.Visibility, Lexi notes, is essential for responsible AI use. Many organizations don't know which departments are using AI, how data is being handled, or where security risks exist. Lanai's technology helps leaders map and monitor AI usage across their companies—identifying risks, preventing data leaks, and ensuring compliance with privacy laws. This proactive approach transforms uncertainty into insight, allowing innovation to flourish safely.Beyond technology, Lexi encourages leaders to consider the human element of AI integration. By prioritizing education, ethical standards, and collaboration between business and compliance teams, organizations can create a culture of trust and accountability. Responsible AI adoption isn't about slowing progress—it's about making innovation sustainable, secure, and beneficial for everyone.About Lexi ReeseLexi Reese is the Co-Founder and CEO of Lanai, an AI-native observability and security platform helping organizations safely adopt and manage AI. Picture it: The lanai, present day. We're sitting down with a slice of cheesecake and two brilliant guests who have given our favorite show the academic treatment it so richly deserves. This week, we are absolutely thrilled to be joined by authors Taylor Cole Miller and Alfred L. Martin Jr. to discuss their fantastic new book, The Golden Girls: Tales From the Lanai. While we've always known the show was smart, funny, and ahead of its time, Taylor and Alfred have put on their scholarly glasses to explore the deeper layers of what makes The Golden Girls a cultural and social juggernaut. We dive into their book's analysis of the show's treatment of chosen family, its groundbreaking portrayal of women and aging, its nuanced (and sometimes not-so-nuanced) approach to race and LGBTQ+ issues, and its enduring legacy in the 21st century.Join us for a fascinating conversation that goes beyond the witty one-liners to unpack the genius, the politics, and the heart of Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia. It's a chat that proves these four women weren't just comedy icons—they were revolutionaries.BUY THE BOOK: https://www.rutgersuniversitypress.org/the-golden-girls/9781978836846/Join the GG VIP Club at Patreon.com/GoldenGirlsPodcastWatch video versions of the podcast on YouTube.com/OutonTheLanaiFor more Golden Girls greatness, visit OutOnTheLanai.com and follow us at...instagram.com/OutOnTheLanaiOfficialfacebook.com/GoldenGirlsPodcasttwitter.com/GoldenGirlsPodFOLLOW H.
