Today's Talmud page, Gittin 23, asks if a bill of divorce can be written by a gentile. The rabbis go on to explain that if a non-Jew wishes to be part of Jewish life, they may do so. In the recent Conversion Episode of Unorthodox, we spoke with Vicki Messler, who works at a Jewish day school, helps with programming at her local JCC, and is raising a Jewish family, all while not being halachically Jewish herself. In the midst of Seattle's escalating homeless crisis, a peculiar trend has emerged. It seems the sidewalks of this progressive city have transformed into something reminiscent of a strange dystopian scene. Unorthodox living arrangements abound, the most bewildering of which is a couple's abode in a greenhouse. Yes, a greenhouse - originally intended for the cultivation of plants, now serves as a dubious shelter for two individuals. The heart of the issue lies in a troubling catch-22. The city's homeless individuals, drawn to the promise of "free housing," soon discover the stark reality. Shelters are overcrowded, and streets are littered with the remnants of former campsites. A greenhouse may appear a resourceful choice in such circumstances, but the logic crumbles under scrutiny. How can one expect comfort and safety in a transparent structure designed for horticulture? The situation takes an even more disheartening turn when one realizes the alternatives: dodging potential fires in RV encampments or risking personal safety in the streets.Indeed, these unusual circumstances highlight the deep-seated failure of the city's leadership in addressing homelessness. The sight of a couple, huddled inside a plastic greenhouse amidst bustling city life, should act as a stark reminder that real solutions are needed. In the meantime, the cycle of displacement, survival, and transient living continues, mirroring the city's failure to combat this burgeoning crisis.#SeattleHomelessness #UnconventionalShelters #CityLeadershipFailureSupport the show

Happy Pride, Wildflowers! June is a special month, filled with vibrant rainbows that illuminate our communities. It's a time when we come together to celebrate and show our unwavering support for our queer friends. However, it's important to acknowledge that not everyone shares the same level of acceptance and love. This reality reinforces the significance of celebrating and uplifting the voices of our queer loved ones. As allies, we have a responsibility to stand beside them, amplifying their experiences and advocating for their rights. It is crucial that we make conscious choices with our resources, ensuring we don't support organizations that oppose equality. One powerful way to become a better ally and understand the struggles faced by the LGBTQIA+ community is through education. By learning about the rich history of the LGBTQ movement in the United States, we gain invaluable insights into the progress that has been made and the challenges that remain. This history is a tapestry woven with the resilience, courage, and determination of countless individuals who fought for their rights and the rights of future generations. In this week's episode, we embark on a journey through time to explore key players and events that have shaped and propelled the fight for equality in the LGBTQIA+ movement in our country. By delving into these stories, we can deepen our understanding of the struggles faced by the community, the milestones achieved, and the ongoing work that lies ahead. Each chapter in this history reveals the strength and spirit of a community that refused to be silenced, pushing boundaries and demanding recognition. From the Stonewall Riots in 1969, where transgender women of color led the charge against police brutality and ignited a global movement, to the activism of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in California, who championed LGBTQ rights until his tragic assassination - these stories serve as reminders of the power of collective action and the transformative impact it can have. Learning about the LGBTQ movement's history fosters empathy, compassion, and a deeper appreciation for the progress we've made while acknowledging the work that remains. It allows us to challenge prejudice and discrimination, inspiring us to create inclusive spaces where all individuals can live authentically and without fear. By embracing the past, we pave the way for a more equitable future. So let us honor the struggles and celebrate the triumphs of the LGBTQIA+ movement by educating ourselves, elevating diverse voices, and standing alongside our queer friends with unwavering support and love. Happy Pride, Wildflowers!

Each year for Shavuot, we air our annual Conversion Episode, in which we share stories of people finding their way to Judaism. This year, inspired by our showrunner Courtney Hazlett's Tablet article, “Don't Call Me a Convert,” we're focusing on the Jewish journeys we're all on. Plus, at the end of the episode, we reveal our new co-host!  But first: We're talking about interfaith relationships, and what we can learn from them, with Dr. Keren McGinity, interfaith specialist at the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and a research associate at the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute. She consults with Jewish clergy and congregations and has written two books about intermarriage: Still Jewish: A History of Women & Intermarriage in America and Marrying Out: Jewish Men, Intermarriage, and Fatherhood.  Next we talk with Vicki Messler, who works at a Jewish day school, helps with programming at her local JCC, and is raising a Jewish family, all while not being halachically Jewish herself. She tells us why she's committed to creating Jewish community, and about her own faith journey.  Then we hear a candid conversation between our own Liel Leibovitz and his wife Lisa Ann Sandell, which was excerpted from their appearance on Rabbi Dovid Bashevkin's 18Forty podcast. Liel and Lisa, who are both Jewish, discuss what happened when Liel started living a more observant life about a decade ago, keeping kosher and praying regularly, and taking on a host of other practices that Lisa hadn't necessarily signed on for as his spouse. Their honest and intimate discussion reveals how we're all evolving in our Jewish practice, and how those changes play out within ourselves, our families, and our communities.  Finally, we call up the listener who wrote to us asking, as an “aspiring Jew” going through the conversion process, whether she would ever feel Jewish enough. Spoiler alert: We're all Jewish enough.  We want to hear from you! Send us emails and voice memos at unorthodox@tabletmag.com, or leave a voicemail at our listener line: (914) 570-4869. Before starting his own label Solar Body, Otik released music on labels like INTERGRADED, Keysound, 3024 and Shall Not Fade, doing his rounds on the imprints that make up a constellation of the UK's most exciting club music. (To keep it simple, we can call it broken techno, but that's not the whole story.) He hails from Bristol, and takes in that city's unique and enduring blend of techno, dub and drum & bass history, but what sets Otik apart is the sense of atmosphere and space in his music. Perhaps RA's Taylor Bratches put it best: "Otik's precise club music floats on a lush, celestial plane." You can hear it in his upcoming EP Xoul Trap, where even a straightforward house beat on "Unorthodox" rides an updraft of choral vocals and eerie synths, as if carried by the wind. Otik says his RA Podcast is meant to be a little more straightforward than usual for him, sticking purely to club music, but it's still full of twists, turns, throwbacks (hello, "Router" by Pangaea) and, of course, the melodic and atmospheric qualities that make Otik tick. @otikmusic Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/882

Last week, federal officials arrested Jack Teixeira, a 21-year-old airman in the Massachusetts Air National Guard, accusing him of having leaked hundreds of pages of classified Pentagon documents on a Discord server. The documents offer rare insights into the war in Ukraine and the extent of military casualties and reveal the presence of U.S. and other NATO nations' special forces clandestinely operating in the war zone. They also document how the conflict is spilling over into the Middle East and shed light on U.S. penetration of Russian military plans and U.S. spy efforts, including against American allies and the United Nations secretary general. This week on Intercepted, Jeremy Scahill, Murtaza Hussain, and national security editor Vanessa Gezari discuss the document leak and analyze what we know and don't know about the young airman accused of distributing the documents, initially to a small group of gamers and gun enthusiasts in a private internet chatroom. They also discuss the media's role in identifying the suspect using open source clues left by Texeira and his friends in the months leading up to his arrest as well as what the accused 21 year old might face in an Espionage Act trial. If you'd like to support our work, go to theintercept.com/join — your donation, no matter what the amount, makes a real difference. And if you haven't already, please subscribe to the show so you can hear it every week. Part 3: Critics on Facebook keep telling Gary that the three questions are "so simple," which actually reveals they haven't studied the issue in any sort of depth. Gary responds by looking at a few of the Bible verses used in the "Unorthodox Eschatology" statement. They use 2 Peter 3, 1 Thessalonians 4, and 2 Thessalonians 1 as "end of the world" proof passages, but problems arise when you 1) read them in context, and 2) look at how some of the signers have interpreted these passages in contradictory ways.
