Kenya Barris talks about his messy childhood, the do's and don'ts of the writer's room, laying low during covid, Larry David making Kenya take the leap to star in a show, raising kids better than our parents, running a writer's room is like conducting music, making podcasts with Malcolm Gladwell, being pals with Jonah Hill, Eddie Murphy putting points on the board, the pleasure and importance of dressing well, and having people around you who can tell you, you suck. Bio: Kenya Barris is an award-winning writer, producer, director and actor, whose innovative approach to comedy has firmly cemented his place as one of Hollywood's great modern storytellers. Best known as the creator behind groundbreaking series like ABC sitcom black-ish and the Netflix original series #blackAF, Barris has built a career telling powerful stories that reflect our culture and fearlessly tackle an array of topics. Most recently, Barris executive produced Diarra From Detroit, a dark comedy about a divorcing schoolteacher who refuses to believe she's been ghosted by her rebound Tinder date; The Vince Staples Show, a scripted series loosely inspired by the life of multi-hyphenate musician Vince Staples; the final season of grown-ish; and produced The Underdoggs, an Amazon original sports comedy starring Snoop Dogg as a youth football team coach. In 2023, Barris and his production company, Khalabo Ink Society, received Emmy nominations for two of their projects: Entergalactic, a first-of-its-kind adult animated music project that featured new music from the Grammy Award-winning musician Kid Cudi and CIVIL, a documentary that offered an intimate portrait of groundbreaking civil rights attorney, Ben Crump. Barris also made his feature directorial debut with Netflix's hit comedy, You People, which he also produced and co-wrote. Barris and Khalabo have multiple high-profile projects in various stages of development. On the television side, projects include: sophomore seasons of Diarra From Detroit and The Vince Staples Show; The Book of Jose, a television series chronicling the life of rapper Fat Joe; Group Chat, a collaboration with Kim Kardashian, based on LaLa Anthony's best-selling book The Love Playbook; a limited series that will offer an intimate look into the life and legacy of the legendary comedian Richard Pryor. On the film side, Barris is developing projects such as: Get Lite starring Storm Reid and marking Teyana Taylor's feature directorial debut; a remake of It's A Wonderful Life; a documentary on the life and career of rapper Chief Keef; Yumanzu, a high concept family adventure movie; Girls Trip 2; and The Man Who Lives Underground. Additionally, Barris and Khalabo have a first-look deal with Audible and in 2023, launched their first podcast, DJ Drama Presents: Gangsta Grillz. Hosted and produced with legendary hip-hop producer, DJ Drama, the popular podcast featured conversations with notable artists such as Tyler, the Creator, Pharrell, Wiz Khalifa, Lil Wayne and more. In 2025, they also launched The Unusual Suspects hosted by Barris and bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell. Barris and Gladwell engage in raw, unfiltered conversations with some of today's most influential figures and titans across a spectrum of professions, including Ava DuVernay, Dr. Dre, Jimmy Kimmel, Sue Bird, and more.

Kenya Barris, the creator of "Black-ish", knows a thing or two about resilience. Eighteen failed pilots before he finally struck gold? That's dedication — and, as it turns out, a family value. I’d always been drawn to Kenya’s humor and storytelling, but during our conversation it really clicked how much his experience as a father — and, as he openly shared, navigating divorce — informs his work. We delve into the intricacies of comedic structure, the tightrope walk that is satire for Black creators, and the moral considerations of challenging the status quo. Plus, we reflect on our time on set together. I'm a huge fan of Kenya's, and if you aren’t already, I have a feeling you will be soon. Follow me on Instagram at @davidduchovny. When it comes to celebrity interviews, the first name that comes to mind is probably not Malcolm Gladwell. But The Tipping Point writer says he will “defend my props as a celebrity interviewer” on Audible's The Unusual Suspects with Kenya Barris and Malcolm Gladwell. “I just thought, it's fun to hang out with Kenya and his celebrity friends... [but] the truth is, we're not just talking with celebrities.” And that mix of celebrities, business figures, politicians and others is what makes their conversations so thrilling. “We're actually not as odd, but it's an interesting combination,” Kenya Barris told Newsweek. "We want people who are at the top of their [field]. [We] ask, 'What was the thing behind the thing? What was the thing that you didn't see?'" And if the caliber of their first guests is any indication, there will be lots more to come. "I hope that people will receive it, because there's so many people who I'd love to talk to that I think are culturally zeitgeist-defining characters that people may not know about." Newsweek's H. Alan Scott chats with Malcolm and Kenya about the The Unusual Suspects, their guests, and why their pairing just works. In this phenomenal conversation with editor Spenser Reich, ACE, we learn how this early science enthusiast came to be a film and TV editor on series like STARZ's Power Book IV: Force and Power Book II: Ghost. Spenser proudly reps the South Bay, San Jose, and it was actually the conversations Spenser's parents made a point to have after going to the cinema when Spenser was young that may have offered an early inkling at what would become a professional interest. About the age of 17 or 18, she decided that she wanted to become a filmmaker because of a strong love for storytelling. After moving to LA for film school and through a process of deduction, she arrived at an interest solidly focused on editing, coming to recognize the adoration as a 'love thing.' When it comes to Black women editors, at that time, she was only familiar with one, a previous Post In Black guest, the great Terilyn Shropshire. Spenser notes there's a specialness in what Black editors and filmmakers capture, bringing honest experiences into their work, mentioning Spike Lee, Boots Riley and Ryan Coogler. Having edited features and episodic TV, we talk about her approach to working within both and whether or not it depends on the genre. Spenser talks about why organization is key in the editing space as well as the power of being able to work effectively in a collaborative setting with other people and why dedication to the work is so necessary. We talk the importance of building a community and helping others within the scope of networking and why Spenser says it's her mission statement. Some of her credentials include Diarra from Detroit for Paramount+, whose executive producers are Kenya Barris and Diarra Kilpatrick, which premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival, the film, SAMSON, which won the Audience Award for Narrative Feature Film at the 2023 Asian American International Film Festival and the series, Physics Girl for PBS. Stay tuned for more episodes of Post In Black's fourth season as we continue to amplify the stories and experiences of Black professionals working in post-production. Since the last round of talks between the WGA and AMPTP on Aug. 22, the deafening silence that fell over Hollywood kicked the rumor mill into overdrive. “This is a function of this stage of the strike where there's a vacuum of information… coupled with a deep sense of distress and desperation to try and figure this thing out,” says Peter Kiefer, who, together with Elaine Low, unraveled the real story of a proposed meeting between showrunners Kenya Barris, Noah Hawley and WGA leadership — and the agent-led whisper campaign behind it. Also: Richard Rushfield calls both sides to task for squabbling over process and procedure: “The rest of the industry should not be asked… to give up a year of income over a fight over whose turn it is to present something.”To subscribe to The Ankler, go to theankler.com/subscribe This is a public episode. “I'd always been a big fan of the written word, from childhood, in different mediums,” says Maurice Williams. “Whether it be youthful song writing or my undergraduate degree in journalism. There's just beauty in the creation, the alchemy of having nothing and then you have something, about writing.” In this case, the something from nothing is Entergalactic, an animated series about Jabari, a streetwear-clad artist on the cusp of success. The story is based on a location as much as it is a person, inspired by Kid Cudi, along with Williams, Kenya Barris, and Ian Edelman. “If I go all the way back, Maurice and I share this, which is why we make great partners, I think growing up as a TV kid, watching movies with my brother while our parents worked, I think even beyond that, it was growing up in New York City, going to public school and writing a bus and subway at a young age, you realize the greatest characters studies are in your backyard,” says Edelman. Edelman packed many of these stories in his 2010 series How to Make It in America. The HBO series followed a group of 20-somethings living in New York City, and featured Bryan Greenberg, Lake Bell, Luis Guzmán, and Kid Cudi. “I wanted to tell stories about kids I knew who were leading interesting lives that were not the conventional movie, movie. We had a different way of looking at the world.” Listen to my interview with Kenya Barris in Episode 227 of the podcast. Want more? R.I.P. David Jolicoeur, Trugoy The Dove, Plug 2, or just Dave, you will be missed. We recorded this episode in person at Dan's house. Anthony continues our Black History studies we discuss the foods brought over by enslaved people and the truly awful nature of chattel slavery. It's a rare Tee heavy episode and he shares quite a few tales but those tales of course lead to other discussions so worry not, it's still a great time. We head over to Reddit for some AITA before going hard on our entertainment discussion this week with a deep dive into Kenya Barris's Netflix film You People and what we liked and disliked about it. We also discussed The Last of Us on HBO, The Last of Us on Playstation, Metroid Prime Remaster on Nintendo Switch, Poker Face on Peacock, so forth and so on. As always, if I don't say I'm the best tell me who the hell will, and this episode is fantastic. And all of that was before her breakout performance opposite Jonah Hill and Eddie Murphy in Kenya Barris' new Netflix movie ‘You People.'
