My friend Becca Moore—who had a strong testimony—bravely shares the difficult road she faces as a transgender Latter-day Saint. Being transgender and living authentically has been healing and liberating for Becca—the challenge/pain is not being accepted/supported by the Church or her family. Becca (age 61, four children, 9 grandchildren, RM from South Korea Seoul West mission, grew up in Sandy UT, BYU grad, career in banking) shares the negative impact of the Church's August 2024 transgender restrictions (see https://www.sltrib.com/religion/2024/08/24/new-lds-church-policies/) causing her to feel unsafe at Church and exposing her and other transgender members to humiliation and abuse. Becca talks about being able to attend Relief Society and how that all changed with the new restrictions and other difficult experiences. It is heartbreaking to hear. We both talk about problems with far-right political ideology that has demonized transgender folks—the same heartbreaking historical pattern repeating itself with gay/lesbian folks, blacks, Native Americans, Jews, etc. We talk about Christ's teaching and gospel principles that show us how to love and support our transgender friends. We talk about the need as a church/society to live up to Elder Rasband's invitation to support our transgender friends: “Elder Ronald A. Rasband taught that people who experience transgender feelings need to be encircled in the arms of their Savior and know they are loved. So often the Lord calls on us; He expects us to be His welcoming, loving arms. We need to encourage their friends to do the same” (https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/topics/transgender/supporting) Thank you Becca for being on the podcast and sharing your honest story. Our lack of support for you is heartbreaking. I hope we can all listen to your story and then consider what we can do in our circle of influence to follow Christ's example to love and support those on the margins like our dear transgender and non-binary friends. You are super brave to share your story. You give me hope.

Together, they share insights into leadership, ministering to growing congregations, and what this new chapter means for Latter-day Saints throughout North Alabama.Whether you're a member of the Church, interested in the history of faith communities in the American South, or simply curious about how religious organizations grow and evolve, this conversation offers a unique look at a landmark event in Alabama Church history.Visit http://churchofjesuschrist.org for more information on the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day SaintsHost/Interviewer: M. The Department of Defense released a revised list of religions and faiths it will use for its chaplain program. Among the changes was the exclusion of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from other Christian denominations. Utah's congressional delegation voiced a lot of frustration and hurt over the move, prompting several conversations with Pentagon officials. This isn't the first time members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been branded as un-Christian; most notably, it happened when Mitt Romney ran for president in 2012. Sarah Jane Weaver, editor of the Deseret News and former editor of Church News, joins the conversation.
Today we're honored to share a special session from Restore 2025 featuring Steven Kapp Perry, Alisha Anderson, and Ben Schilaty—three gay Latter-day Saints who have each taken different paths, and who share a deep commitment to following God with honesty, courage, and faith. In this on-stage conversation, Steve, Alisha, and Ben share personal and vulnerable reflections on what it means to seek God when the road ahead feels uncertain, and the courage it takes to keep moving forward in faith. They explore belonging, revelation, and the complexity of spiritual life as they describe discerning and following paths that looked very different from one another's and the ones they once expected—often amid the pain of being misunderstood. This session was a powerful reminder that God is at work in every life, and that each person's journey is sacred. As Ben shares near the end of the conversation, "The stories that truly matter are the stories of the LGBTQ people that you know in your lives." That's our invitation this month. We hope this conversation opens the door to deeper connection with people in your own life whose paths may look different than your own. We're grateful to Steve, Alisha, and Ben for their vulnerability and wisdom. You'll hear Steve mention a short film at the beginning of this session that tells more of Alisha's story. It's beautiful and moving, and you can watch it here. You can also watch a video recording of this session, including a musical performance from Steve and his wife, on our YouTube channel or Substack. Can God turn our darkest moments into the beginning of something greater? In this week's episode of Latter-Day Lights, Scott and Darla sit down with author and father Juan Panchano. Growing up in Colombia amid cartel violence, political unrest, and family instability, Juan carried deep wounds from abandonment, rejection, and loneliness. After moving to the United States as a child, those struggles only intensified, eventually leading him down a path of alcoholism, depression, and a suicide attempt that left him physically broken. But in his darkest moment, a simple plea to God sparked an experience that would change the course of his life forever. In this powerful discussion, Juan shares the remarkable spiritual experiences that followed his recovery, including a miraculous healing, personal revelations, and the unexpected journey that led him to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.Juan also discusses his book, “Latino by Birth, American by Choice,” and shares why he believes true freedom begins with a personal relationship with God. Fostering self-reliance while also caring for those in need here and around the world -- those are both missions of a new humanitarian center just opened by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Michelle Graabek-Wallace (PhD, European University Institute) is a historian at the Church History Department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She serves as the Chair of the Global Mormon Studies Network and the Global Outreach Chair for the Mormon History Association. Her academic research focuses on global history, gender, migration, and transnational religious history, with a particular emphasis on Scandinavian cultural identity within Latter-day Saint history.I wanted to speak with Michelle to discuss her extensive research into global Church history and the fascinating, unique story of Danish Latter-day Saint converts during the 19th and 20th centuries. We explore the massive social, political, and religious shifts that opened the doors to the first missionaries in Denmark, the incredible logistics of the Scandinavian pioneer trek to Utah, and the complex journey of preserving cultural identity while embracing a global faith. Some highlights from this episode include:Denmark's Religious Freedom Awakening: Michelle explains how the political transition to a constitutional monarchy in 1849 paved the way for religious freedom, and how early friction with a local Baptist congregation inadvertently opened the doors for the first Latter-day Saint missionaries in 1850.The Translators of the Book of Mormon: A look behind the scenes at the surprisingly rapid 1851 translation of the Book of Mormon into Danish—the very first foreign language publication of the book. Michelle highlights the collaborative but occasionally tense relationship between sailor Peter O. Hansen and language teacher Miss Mathisen.Social Equality and Persecution: A deep dive into the demographics of early Danish converts, who were predominantly working-class craftspeople and rural farmers drawn to the gospel's message of social equality. Michelle shares a poignant, extreme historical account of the heavy social ostracization, job loss, and legal battles faced by early converts. The "Brain Drain" and the Swedish Rebellion: A discussion on how the massive wave of emigration to Utah created a leadership "brain drain" back in Denmark, and a humorous look at the "Swedish Rebellion" in Salt Lake City, sparked by Swedish Saints who grew tired of being lumped into a generalized "Scandinavian" identity dominated by Danish culture.World War II Isolation: A look at how the evacuation of American missionaries in 1939 forced the Danish Saints to become completely self-sufficient and financially independent for the very first time during the Nazi occupation. You can find more of Michelle's body of work at the following links:Our Inspired Constitutionshttps://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/liahona/2023/10/united-states-and-canada-section/04-our-inspired-constitutions?lang=engMichelle Graabek-Wallace ORCID Academic Profilehttps://orcid.org/0000-0001-6008-1154Global Mormon Studies Steering Committee https://gms.spencergreenhalgh.com/about-gms/steering-committee/Mormon History Association Board Membershttps://mormonhistoryassociation.org/about-us/mha-board-members/Follow For All The Saints on social media for updates and inspiring content:www.instagram.com/forallthesaintspodhttps://www.facebook.com/forallthesaintspod/For All The Saints episodes are released every Monday on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and more:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVDUQg_qZIU&list=UULFFf7vzrJ2LNWmp1Kl-c6K9Qhttps://open.spotify.com/show/3j64txm9qbGVVZOM48P4HS?si=bb31d048e05141f2https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/for-all-the-saints/id1703815271If you have feedback or any suggestions for topics or guests, connect with Ben & Sean via hello@forallthesaints.org or DM on InstagramConversations to Refresh Your Faith. For All The Saints podcast was established in 2023 by Ben Hancock to express his passion and desire for more dialogue around faith, religious belief, and believers' perspectives on the topics of our day. My friend Kelsey Well (who was on Episode 815) joins us to update her story. Kelsey (former EFY counselor and seminary teacher, active Latter-day Saint)—who broke off an engagement to a man realizing it wasn't right which she talked about in her prior episode—talks about falling in love with Christina and their upcoming marriage. Kelsey also shares their desire to remain active members of their ward. In this episode Kelsey talks about: Her relationship with God and the Church What her relationship with her fiancé has shaped the way she sees faith, love, and her future. What she wishes church members better understood about LGBTQ people who choose to stay active in the Church. What she says to someone who feels they have to choose between being loved by God and being fully themselves. Kelsey talks about how they plan to stay connect to the Temple that they love. Once married—and no longer having recommends—they talk about to being in the temple waiting room and doing family history. Thank you Kelsey for your courage to move forward in the path that you feel is right for you. Matt Whitaker has been writing and directing for film and television for over 30 years. A specialist in the WWII genre, his produced screenplays include the critically acclaimed war films Saints and Soldiers and Instrument of War. In 2002, Whitaker and a film crew travelled to Germany with the last surviving member of a teenage resistance group, a powerful experience that led to the PBS documentary Truth & Conviction: The Helmuth Hübener Story. Now, his dramatic feature film, Truth & Treason, brings this incredible history to audiences across the UK.I wanted to speak with Matt to dive into the compelling history of Helmuth Hübener, the youngest person executed by the Nazi regime for opposing Adolf Hitler. As a fellow Latter-day Saint, Matt shares his 25-year journey of bringing this profound piece of history to life, the complex realities of local church leaders navigating a totalitarian state, and how recent research on Gestapo files has been changing how scholars view the Church's relationship with the Third Reich. Some highlights from this episode include:Loyalty to a Lie: Matt breaks down the incredible true story of 16-year-old Helmuth Hübener, who chose to risk everything by listening to banned BBC shortwave broadcasts to uncover the truth and launch a clandestine leaflet resistance campaign. The Words of the Leaflets: Matt reveals a crucial detail about the creative authenticity of Truth & Treason: every single sentence of anti-Nazi text typed or spoken from the resistance leaflets in the film is a direct, accurate English translation taken straight from the historical Gestapo archives. The Secret Gestapo Files: A fascinating look into additional historical research by scholar Steven Smoot and the BH Roberts Foundation, detailing a massive, Gestapo dossier that proves the Nazi regime was actively spying on and deeply suspicious of the Latter-day Saint community in Germany. The Complexity of Wartime Leadership: A nuanced discussion regarding the immense pressure faced by Hamburg Branch President Arthur Zander, exploring the difficult dual-realities of a man who was a devoted church leader but also an ardent supporter of the regime.A 25 Year Project: Matt opens up about a deeply personal spiritual experience that gave him the definitive mandate to direct this film, and how his wife's unwavering support kept the project alive through two decades of immense funding and development challenges.Truth & Treason is available on Amazon Prime Video and major UK digital platforms starting May 18 2026.Follow For All The Saints on social media for updates and inspiring content:www.instagram.com/forallthesaintspodhttps://www.facebook.com/forallthesaintspod/For All The Saints episodes are released every Monday on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and more:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVDUQg_qZIU&list=UULFFf7vzrJ2LNWmp1Kl-c6K9Qhttps://open.spotify.com/show/3j64txm9qbGVVZOM48P4HS?si=bb31d048e05141f2https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/for-all-the-saints/id1703815271If you have feedback or any suggestions for topics or guests, connect with Ben & Sean via hello@forallthesaints.org or DM on InstagramConversations to Refresh Your Faith. For All The Saints podcast was established in 2023 by Ben Hancock to express his passion and desire for more dialogue around faith, religious belief, and believers' perspectives on the topics of our day. What do you do when the career you worked so hard for leaves you feeling burnt out?In this week's episode of Latter-Day Lights, Scott and Darla sit down with author and Praiseworthy Award Winner, Vanessa Thurgood, to share how stepping away from the career that caused her burnout, unexpectedly led her toward a new calling: writing epic fantasy novels filled with themes of courage, faith, and resilience. What began as merely an entry in an old dream journal eventually became “The Comstock Chronicles,” a fantasy series that has touched readers in deeply personal ways. Vanessa shares how writing emotionally honest, deeply human characters allowed readers to see themselves in the story—especially during difficult seasons of their lives—and how one message from a reader helped her realize the true impact her work could have.Apart from navigating imposter syndrome, learning to trust spiritual promptings, and discovering how storytelling can become a powerful way to share light, Vanessa also shares how her creative journey expanded beyond books and into creativity retreats designed to help women reconnect with creativity, joy, and themselves.Vanessa's story is a heartfelt reminder that the gifts we're given often have a greater purpose, and that when we choose to share our light, we may end up helping others find theirs, too.*** Please SHARE Vanessa's story and help us spread hope and light to others. ***To WATCH this episode on YouTube, visit: https://youtu.be/ukTnYo_FBV8-----To READ Vanessa's book series, “The Comstock Chronicles,” visit: https://a.co/d/0066TVh9To LEARN MORE about Vanessa's work, visit: https://vanessathurgood.com/-----To READ Scott's new book “Faith to Stay” for free, visit: https://www.faithtostay.com/-----Keep updated with us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/latter.day.lights/Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/latterdaylightsAlso, if you have a faith-promoting or inspiring story, or know someone who does, please let us know by going to https://www.latterdaylights.com and reaching out to us.

How does God's love keep showing up for us, even when we struggle? In this episode Professor Aaron Schade reframes the book of Judges as more than a collection of heroic stories. Instead, he describes it as a sobering account of spiritual decline, broken covenants, and the consequences of living according to "what is right in our own eyes." Professor Schade explores the recurring cycle found in Judges: ancient Israel turns away from God, experiences suffering, cries out for relief, and is delivered only to fall again. Rather than celebrating the judges as flawless leaders, he highlights their imperfections and the deeper message of the text as a lament over moral confusion and a society unraveling without covenant guidance. Further, Professor Schade explains that at the center of the book of Judges is the example of God's steadfast, unwavering love. Even as His people struggle to truly repent, He continues to reach out, deliver, and invite them back into a relationship with Him. This episode invites us to wrestle with difficult questions about agency, obedience, and discipleship while discovering the powerful truth that God's love persists. Even in the midst of our failures, God's love is always calling us back to Him. My friend Amy Thelin (who grew up in Virginia, served in Tahiti Papeete Mission, taught at the Missionary Training Center, and graduated from Brigham Young University) joins us to share her story. Amy reflects on the deeply spiritual experiences that led her to become active in the Church and serve a mission, motivated by her desire to help others feel the love of Christ. Amy also talks about returning home from her mission, transferring to BYU, earning a degree in Human Development, and later teaching at the MTC. She then shares what it was like to finally “take her sexuality off the shelf” and begin honestly addressing it after years of keeping herself busy to avoid it. Through prayer, scripture study, temple attendance, and personal revelation, Amy came to feel peace about her path forward—including the feeling that “dating girls is good for you.” She talks about falling in love with Melanie and the excitement surrounding their upcoming wedding in June 2026. Amy also discusses navigating these experiences while attending BYU, including both meaningful and difficult moments, as well as the grief she feels in not being able to fully participate in the Church. Amy and Melanie share their hope of finding ward leaders and church communities where they can feel loved, accepted, spiritually safe, and connected to Jesus Christ—a simple hope to “just be OK to be here.” Thank you, Amy, for being on the podcast and for the many lives you have blessed and will continue to bless. I hope for better days ahead for queer members of the Church—days where they can feel loved, accepted, needed, and valued. You are awesome, and you have a beautiful life ahead of you. What if a single moment could completely reshape how you see your life and your purpose within it?In this week's episode of Latter-Day Lights, Jerald Simon shares his remarkable journey as a composer, author, and lifelong student of faith and creativity. After surviving a traumatic fall from a 100-foot cliff as a child—an experience that erased his early memories and led to years of recovery—Jerald began to view life through a profoundly different lens. That path eventually led her and her family to Mexico, where they now work to create a safe, nurturing refuge for youth—The Find Your Path Mission—offering education, mentorship, and opportunities for healing and growth.Through moments of uncertainty, unexpected setbacks, and tender mercies, Karen reflects on trusting God even when life doesn't go according to plan. What happens when a creative prompting turns into something that can change one person's life?In this week's episode of Latter-Day Lights, Scott and Darla Brandley sit down with author and Praiseworthy Award winner Jason Jones, who shares his 8-year journey behind writing his debut novel, “One Day a Year.” From making simple screenplays with his coworkers to boost company morale, what began as a simple idea for a time-travel story evolved into years of persistence, self-doubt, and growth, packaged into a book on faith and family history. Jason opens up about navigating imposter syndrome, learning the craft of storytelling, and holding onto the quiet spiritual nudges that kept him moving forward—until the “ideal reader” he created in his mind turned out to be the best plot twist he never expected.Jason admits that the most powerful part of his story came after the book was finished. He reflects on how his work unexpectedly became a catalyst for someone close to him to rediscover faith, illustrating how creative efforts—no matter how small they seem—can carry a much greater purpose. Through themes of familial love, intuitive pulls, and trusting in divine timing, this conversation is a reminder that the things we feel called to create may matter more than we could ever realize.*** Please SHARE Jason's story and help us spread hope and light to others. ***To WATCH this episode on YouTube, visit: https://youtu.be/4u5baAbBclA-----To READ Jason's book, “One Day a Year,” visit: https://a.co/d/0fxexvgo-----To READ Scott's new book “Faith to Stay” for free, visit: https://www.faithtostay.com/-----Keep updated with us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/latter.day.lights/Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/latterdaylightsAlso, if you have a faith-promoting or inspiring story, or know someone who does, please let us know by going to https://www.latterdaylights.com and reaching out to us.
My friends Andy and Stephanie (LDS parents of 4; living in Vancouver, Washington) join us to share their story. Andy starts with the talk he gave in Church using the line “other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation” from the Family Proclamation to talk about how to better love and support LGBTQ Latter-day Saints. It is a powerful talk—one of the best I've heard on addressing this important topic—using church leader quotes, Christ teachings, and church resources. Andy received only positive feedback on the talk. Stephanie and Andy then have a discussion around the process to write the talk and things they are doing to be allies in their circle of influence (including starting a local gathering group) to support LGBTQ Latter-day Saints and those who love them. If you are looking to talk about this subject (in church, family, etc) please listen to and share Andy's talk. It will give you tools, insights, and church quotes to talk about this subject. And if you are LGBTQ, I believe Andy's talk and the work Andy and Stephanie are doing will give you hope. Thank you Andy and Stephanie for being on the podcast and all you are doing to create Zion. What happens when children ask, “Why do we do this?” In this reflective episode, Kristian Heal explores Exodus 12:26 and the powerful relationship between story, ritual, and memory in the life of faith. From the dramatic deliverance of Israel in the Exodus to the quiet, repeated practices that keep that story alive across generations, this episode considers how sacred traditions are designed not just to remember the past—but to shape the future. Heal examines how narrative and ritual work together to sustain hope, especially in moments of uncertainty, and how a culture of questioning and answering becomes essential to passing faith from one generation to the next. As ancient Israel marked time through Passover and sacred observance, so too do modern believers find meaning through practices that connect them to God's saving work. Ultimately, this episode invites listeners to consider how the most prophetically audacious story of all—the life and resurrection of Jesus Christ—continues to be remembered, reenacted, and lived today.
