And yet, it was the Book of Mormon that helped her change the trajectory of her life, break the cycle of abuse, overcome a difficult learning disability, and completely rewrite her story. If you've ever wondered whether Christ really shows up in the mess, Becky's story will leave no doubt.*** Please SHARE Becky's story and help us spread hope and light to others. ***To WATCH this episode, visit: https://youtu.be/J8ZuGOeCOmc-----To READ Becky's book, A Girl Named White Cloud, visit: https://www.amazon.com/Girl-Named-White-Cloud-darkness/dp/B0DRSXR5JX-----Keep updated with us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/latter.day.lights/Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/latterdaylightsAlso, if you have a faith-promoting or inspiring story, or know someone who does, please let us know by going to https://www.latterdaylights.com and reaching out to us.
This letter was written on the twentieth day of the third month, 1272, some five months after Nichiren Daishonin had arrived on the island of Sado to begin his exile there. He addressed it to Toki Jōnin, a samurai serving as a leading retainer to Lord Chiba, the constable of Shimōsa Province, to Saburō Saemon (Shijō Kingo) in Kamakura, and to other staunch followers.Nichiren Daishonin had been banished on the tenth day of the tenth month, 1271. Charges of treason had been brought against him by Ryōkan, the chief priest of Gokuraku-ji temple in Kamakura, and by Hei no Saemon, deputy chief of the Office of Military and Police Affairs. Hei no Saemon was resolved to execute the Daishonin at Tatsunokuchi before he was to be delivered to the custody of Homma Shigetsura, the deputy constable of Sado. The attempt at execution was unsuccessful, however, and after a delay of almost a month Homma's warriors escorted the Daishonin to the coast of the Sea of Japan. After a delay there caused by bad weather, the Daishonin finally arrived on Sado on the twenty-eighth day of the tenth month.Nichiren Daishonin was housed at first in a dilapidated structure known as Sammai-dō, where he lived exposed to the wind and snow that blew in through gaps in the roof and walls. After five months he was able to move to more comfortable quarters at Ichinosawa. The Daishonin engaged in debates with Pure Land and other priests and actively propagated his own teachings. While on Sado he wrote two major treatises, The Opening of the Eyes and The Object of Devotion for Observing the Mind. In the second month, 1274, the Daishonin was pardoned and returned to Kamakura on the twenty-sixth day of the third month. In this writing the Daishonin first states that the only way to attain Buddhahood is to be willing to offer one's life, one's most precious possession, to Buddhism. Next, he says that the method of propagation known as shakubuku is appropriate to this age, and that one can attain Buddhahood only by dedicating oneself to it. He then declares that he is the “pillar, sun, moon, mirror, and eyes” of and “father and mother” to the country; these are symbolic references to the Buddha of the Latter Day of the Law, who is perfectly endowed with the three virtues of parent, teacher, and sovereign. He also mentions his earlier prophecies in On Establishing the Correct Teaching for the Peace of the Land concerning political upheaval and violent feuds within the country.Lastly, he gives an elaborate explanation of karma or destiny, stating that his present difficulties arise from the fact that he slandered the Lotus Sutra in a past existence. Using himself as an example, he elucidates to his disciples the kind of spirit and practice by which they can alter their karma. He adds that persons who try to propagate the correct teaching of Buddhism vigorously will invariably face opposition, and that such opposition in reality presents an opportunity for them to change their karma. Those who have given up their faith and instead criticize are admonished that their actions bear the heaviest consequences. He compares their lack of vision to fireflies who laugh at the sun.https://www.nichirenlibrary.org/en/wnd-1/Content/32
Abstract: The classical formulation of God as the sole, self-existent Being and ground of all that exists poses a philosophical problem. If God is omniscient and omnipotent, why does evil exist? Why does he not save humankind from moral and natural evil? If we embrace the full set of classical assumptions of creedal Christianity, these […] The post Latter-day Saint Theology and the Problem of Evil first appeared on The Interpreter Foundation.

In a world where religious divisions often dominate headlines, this video presents a refreshing perspective on the potential for unity within the Christian faith. Featuring insights from Gavin Ortlund, a prominent Protestant thinker, the discussion centers around the idea that Christ's work is not limited to any single denomination. Instead, Ortlund argues that the presence of the Holy Spirit can be discerned through the fruits of love, joy, and peace, which are evident in various religious communities. This inclusive approach challenges the exclusivist claims of some Christian traditions, suggesting that a broader understanding of the church could foster greater harmony among believers. When pillars of certainty crumble, is it possible to rebuild something even stronger in their place? When two trusted ward members announced they were leaving the Church, newly called bishop Scott Brandley was rocked to the core. Overnight, the man called to strengthen spirituality in others found himself wrestling with his own doubts, spiralling into a crisis of faith, and stripping his testimony down to five essential questions around God, Joseph Smith, and The Book of Mormon. In this special milestone episode of Latter-day Lights, the tables turn as beloved host Scott steps into the guest chair. With candor and humility, he shares the origins of how prayer-filled walks, sleepless study sessions, and Heaven-sent impressions rebuilt his faith while igniting two unexpected missions along the way: launching this very podcast, "Latter-Day Lights," and penning his new upcoming book, “Faith to Stay.”From shepherding a ward through turbulent times, to teaming up with co-host and good friend Alisha Coakley to invite growth, instill faith, and inspire others, Scott's journey is proof that God can use cracked foundations to plant pillars of testimony. It reminds us all that even in our most fragile moments, He is plotting our legacy behind the scenes.*** Please SHARE Scott's story and help us spread hope and light to others. ***To WATCH this episode, visit: https://youtu.be/wJUm-dyO7tk-----To WATCH our Marcovia Project episode, visit: https://youtu.be/E1zdsd9vLhMTo DONATE to The Marcovia Project, visit: https://themarcoviaproject.org/-----Keep updated with us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/latter.day.lights/Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/latterdaylightsAlso, if you have a faith-promoting or inspiring story, or know someone who does, please let us know by going to https://www.latterdaylights.com and reaching out to us.
My guest today is Valerie Hamaker, a licensed mental health professional and co-host of the popular Latter Day Struggles podcast—a show focused on helping individuals, especially members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, navigate the emotional and spiritual challenges that arise from complex church history and theology. Recently, Valerie and her husband Nathan were summoned to appear before a membership disciplinary council—a process that often results in excommunication. Instead of participating, they chose to resign their membership. The way they've been treated by their local leaders—what I'd call a clear attempt at silencing—feels not only confusing and unsettling, but also symptomatic of deeper cracks within the structure and institution of the LDS Church. My friend Elder Jax Smith (multi-racial, from Highland Utah, Age 25) joins us to bravely share his story: Middle school: “My personal hell” Coming out to older siblings Suicidal ideation, hospitalization, “choosing to stay” Decision to serve a mission/called to Alabama Birmingham Reason for ending his mission and leaving the Church Role of good people (like Elder Jenkins) to help him return to Church Difficult YSA experience attending with his boyfriend—left the Church for a second time Focusing on Jesus and attending Baptist Church Bishop's (also his uncle) invitation to attend his YSA Ward Calling that led him to full activity, becoming a temple worker, and going back on a mission Others (like Elder Wright and Brother Monson) that helped him accept himself and feel like he belonged Navigating church generated pain/trauma/difficult experiences Powerful testimony of Jesus Christ and His power to heal This is another super powerful/brave podcast from a remarkable Latter-day Saint. Thank you Elder Jax Smith for being on the podcast. Scripture Notes - https://scripturenotes.com Sky Sorensen is concerned, as am I, that many in the church are preaching that the church will "change" marriage. That same-sex marriage WILL happen in the temple. This becomes very confusing to gay Latter-day Saints. Many grab onto this vision of "hope in change" over "hope in Christ." Sky experiences same-sex attraction. He prefers that description over "gay." He is happily married to a woman and has children with her Website- www.cwicmedia.com

When a simple curiosity of well-worn scripture leads to a full-fledged passion, can the pages of history strengthen our faith even more? For family man and dedicated Book of Mormon collector, Robert Messick, the answer is a resounding YES! In this fascinating episode of Latter-day Lights, Robert takes us on a journey through centuries of rare and unique Book of Mormon editions—from early RLDS printings and first-edition 1830 copies, to a near-mythical Deseret Alphabet copy with only 500 ever produced. Robert reveals how these volumes aren't just prized collectibles—they're precious links to the faith, sacrifices, and testimonies of the Saints who came before us.Building on his passion for preserving these sacred artifacts, Robert also introduces The Book of Mormon Census Project, an ambitious effort to track and protect these treasured books worldwide.Robert's testimony shines as a gentle reminder that the Book of Mormon remains a living, unifying force—no matter its publication date, material, or design. Whether you're a history buff, a collector at heart, or simply seeking spiritual uplift, you'll find inspiration in Robert's stories of faith, family, and the timeless power of scripture.*** Please SHARE Robert's story and help us spread hope and light to others. ***To WATCH this episode on YouTube, visit: https://youtu.be/g9asiuaih3k-----To FOLLOW Robert's YouTube channel, visit: https://www.youtube.com/@bookofmormoneditionsTo FOLLOW The Book Of Mormon Census Project, visit: https://bookofmormoncensus.com/-----Keep updated with us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/latter.day.lights/Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/latterdaylightsAlso, if you have a faith-promoting or inspiring story, or know someone who does, please let us know by going to https://www.latterdaylights.com and reaching out to us.#LDSPodcast #ChristianStories #LatterDayLights

What if your most devastating life storms are actually clearing the path to your greater purpose? From the outside, Bethany Harger was living the dream—temple marriage, young children, and a promising future. But behind closed doors, crippling depression left her bedridden while her husband battled addiction. After two divorces, custody battles across state lines, and periods of homelessness, Bethany found herself sleeping on her mother-in-law's floor—while divorcing her son. Then, a series of divine coincidences began to unfold—including the unexpected fulfillment of a written vision she'd created years earlier, describing the kind of loving relationship she longed for.Today, Bethany has not only found that love, but also a renewed sense of purpose. She's now co-founding The Breakthrough Foundation with Leslie Householder to help others transform their own storms into purpose. This episode offers a powerful reminder that when you feel most broken, you might actually be breaking through to something far greater than you ever imagined.*** Please SHARE Bethany's story and help us spread hope and light to others. ***To WATCH this episode on YouTube, visit: https://youtu.be/Djgy31vx9Es-----The Breakthrough Foundation can be found on Facebook (@thebreakthroughfoundation) and Instagram (@breakthrough_found)Donations to The Breakthrough Foundation can be made through Venmo here: https://www.venmo.com/u/breakthrough24Applications to be a participant in the The Breakthrough Foundation can be submitted here: https://forms.gle/jYTZCBCrh98PwmW1AThe new website for The Breakthrough Foundation is www.thebreakthroughfoundation.orgFor those interested in coaching with Bethany or reading her blog can go to www.wayfindermentoring.com.-----Keep updated with us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/latter.day.lights/Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/latterdaylightsAlso, if you have a faith-promoting or inspiring story, or know someone who does, please let us know by going to https://www.latterdaylights.com and reaching out to us.#LatterDayLighs #ChristianStories

When years of crippling addiction tighten its grip, can a sliver of lasting change still exist? For carpenter, devoted husband, and former addict Orlando Mora, the path out of darkness was illuminated not just through sobriety and faith, but by a heaven-sent “gift of dreams.” From his first prayer of desperation to the day he opened the door to two unexpected missionaries, Orlando discovered that God's guidance comes in many forms—sometimes through gentle impressions of the Spirit, and sometimes through vivid dreams that bring clarity, comfort, and renewed purpose. In this uplifting episode of Latter-day Lights, Orlando recounts the power of divine intervention that guided him from a dark “basement” of hopelessness to the bright promise of a new beginning. From his first steps into a detox center, to the moment he felt Christ's arms around him at the Mesa Arizona Temple, Orlando's story testifies that no one is beyond the reach of God's grace. Even in our deepest struggles, we can find ourselves led by the hand of a loving Savior who has never once left our side.Orlando's journey brings hope to anyone seeking to turn their life around. Kelsey starts with coming out to her mother (senior year of high school) and the good/difficult experiences—including how not talking about it brings shame. Kelsey bravely talks about getting engaged to a man and how that engagement ended a few weeks before the wedding. Kelsey talks about ignoring red flags because of her desire to get married and have a family. Kelsey talks about being in the Temple and a sealer sharing some thoughts that gave her clarity and courage to end the engagement. Kelsey talks about not wanting to be alive—but finding hope in Christ, therapy and the Questions From the Closet podcast. Kelsey also talks about “fear is where Satan thrives”. Prior to their exodus west, nearly 90,000 converts journeyed across the seas to join the saints in America. In this episode Fred E. Woods, professor of Church history and doctrine, details the faith and immigration experiences of these saints as he discusses his recent publication Ports to Posts: Latter-day Saints Gathering in the Nineteenth Century. Professor Woods explores the port of Liverpool, England, the main point of embarkment for many converts, examines sailing conditions across the Atlantic for converts and non-converts alike, and details the arrival of these early pioneers into American harbors and the various posts they made contact with along the way. In addition to exploring how these converts gathered unto Zion, Professor Woods shares why so many members left their homelands to “be gathered in unto one place” (Doctrine & Covenants 29:7). My friend Trevor Schoeny (RM from Lubbock Texas, returned Dec 2024, from Virgina/DC, BYU student, Age 23) joins us to share his story as a gay Latter-day Saint. Trevor starts with realizing he is gay and then coming out to his parents after his senior year (positive experience). Trevor talks about stepping away from the Church (which helped him eventually come back to the Church) and his brave (and somewhat surprising) decision to serve a mission (and walk back into a place of trauma)—because he wanted to help others heal from pain and find love. Trevor (who reads scriptures throughout the podcast) talks about all the things he learned and taught on his mission including: * Fear has no place in the Gospel * His crucible moment when he decided to stay on his mission * No one should feel they are not celestial material * Importance of vulnerability * Finding our story in the scriptures I was so moved listening to and learning from Trevor—a great man who was been through the “winepress” representing the difficult road of a queer Latter-day Saint—and his ability to help others find hope, belonging and peace. You are a man of great courage. You are a good man, Trevor. I'm honored to have you on the podcast. Everyone in the Church needs to hear like Trevor as we build Zion. My friend Matt Higinbotham (RM from Tempe Arizona, returned Feb 2024, from Utah County, BYU student) joins us to share his story as a gay Latter-day Saint. Matt talks about his early years figuring out his sexuality and his journey to realize (and then accept) he is gay. Matt talks about the role of prayer, scripture study, and temple attendance to help feel God's love, acceptance, hope for his future and the desire to serve/help others (a big reason he did the podcast). Matt talks about his desire to serve a mission and how that hope eventually became a reality—all while being open with his church leaders about his sexual orientation. Matt talks about the positive and painful experience of being gay and on a mission. Some the negative ones were around gay jokes (missionaries and members) and some of the positive ones were where being open about being gay allowing him to help others know they too could feel God's love, and acceptance. Matt talks about how navigating a variety of experience (including Church leader talks that were painful), being an EFY counselor (and teaching the Family Proclamation), seeing the Y lit up in pride colors, unfairness (compared to straight members) of being gay (and not having a path to have a marriage and still fully participate in the Church). I learned so much from Matt—a thoughtful, spiritually mature, deeply insightful, and remarkable man. You are a good man Matt with a wonderful future. Thank you for blessing so many people on your mission and doing this podcast which will give others hope—and help us better love and support each other as we build Zion.
