My friend Jacob Guy, (RM, FSY Counselor, Weber State Student) joins us to share his story. Jacob talks about his spiritual journey and temple attendance to come out to himself and others about 18 months ago. That included breaking off a serious relationship with a woman. Jacob shares a powerful visual analogy of being locked out of the house of happy married straight people and not having a key to open the door—one of the most powerful examples I've heard. Jacob talks about his rock-solid relationship with Jesus and how He is helping him find hope and peace concurrently with the unknowns of his future. Jacob reads from his from his scriptures to share some of his favorite stories of Jesus and the principles Jesus teaching that apply to all of our lives. I was deeply moved hearing Jacob's courageous, no-shame, spiritually mature story—including deep peace and acceptance of his sexual orientation. If you are in the process of coming out (even to yourself), Jacob's story will help you. If you are out, I believe Jacob's story will help you. And if you are looking to better understand and support LGBTQ Latter-day Saints, Jacob's story will help you. Thank you for being on the podcast Jacob. You are a good man. In the wake of drought, climate change and, primarily, human-caused incursions, the Salt Lake Valley's namesake ecological landmark, the Great Salt Lake, is dying, shriveling up before our very eyes. Experts warn, in fact, that this shrinking body of water could vanish within five years, leaving behind an exposed lakebed and a source of toxic dust storms that could make this place — this place that Brigham Young reportedly declared the “right place” to become Mormonism's new home — uninhabitable. So the need to save the lake is obvious, and the stakes are huge — not only for Salt Lakers and Utahns but also for The Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints. The faith's world headquarters is here. Its history is here. Its strength — both in membership and, frankly, money — is here. Its iconic Salt Lake Temple and global offices are here. Thankfully, it's not too late to preserve the lake, but it will take a concerted, costly and expedited effort, and the Utah-based church — and its members — must play a vital role. On this week's show, Ben Abbott, professor of ecology at church-owned Brigham Young University, discusses the lake's precarious present and what Latter-day Saints and their church could do to help secure its future.

"I was at a friend's house and on my way to a church activity and I had my scriptures. My friend asked me "What are those?" And I said it's my Bible, Book of Mormon, Pearl of Great Price, and Doctrine and Covenants. These are our sacred books in my faith. And he goes "What's the Book of Mormon?" I started to describe what we believe about the Book of Mormon. I specifically said, we believe that some ancient Israelites left Israel and migrated to the Americas. As I was talking with him about this, I got my witness and felt like my whole body was on fire."

Abstract: Here I address specific criticisms of Margaret Barker's work. First, I set the stage by discussing Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions as a map and compass for navigating this kind of controversy. I show how his observations cast light on debates about Jesus in the Gospel of John, which in turn resemble present debates. In this […] The post Twenty Years After “Paradigms Regained,” Part 2: Responding to Margaret Barker's Critics and Why Her Work Should Matter to Latter-day Saints first appeared on The Interpreter Foundation.
There are plenty of people counted as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who don't necessarily make their memberships count. They're not all-in, but they're not all-out either. They may have issues with church's theology, history, policies, practices, people or any number of other reasons. Some eventually leave, but many stay, clinging to the fringes of the faith. It's to this diverse and disparate audience that this week's guest, author Christian Kimball, addresses his new book, “Living on the Inside of the Edge: A Survival Guide,” currently Amazon's bestselling Mormonism book. A former bishop, Kimball, who describes himself as a “25-year veteran backbencher in a blue shirt and no tie,” doesn't prod these “edge dwellers” to stick it out — in fact, he says exiting the church may be the best move for some — but he also doesn't urge these “middle-way” members to bolt. Rather, he offers practical and practicable advice for how adult Latter-day Saints can navigate the nexus of affection and disaffection, doubt and certainty, belief and disbelief, activity and inactivity, and be at home on the “inside of the edge” of Mormonism.
From Latter Day Saints to Protestants to Catholics to Jehovah's Witnesses, David Boice from @52churchesin52weeks visits churches of all kinds in his ongoing YouTube spiritual challenge. Join Steve this week as he interviews therapist Valerie Hamaker and her husband Nathan, new voices in the Mormon podcasting world. Valerie started this podcast on a whim, wanting to share insights and thoughts about her ongoing experiences with struggling Latter Day Saints in the therapy room and was shocked when this show started to rapidly grow. The frequent letters that come to Valerie commend her boldness, candor, and respectful but fearless truth telling and compassionate way of making sense of the real-time suffering of many members of the LDS church. Their growing audience also loves the respectful but firm invitation to the institution to look at issues that bring people who desire to be faithful in the LDS tradition a lot of pain and sometimes the agonizing need to withdraw. #lds #ldspodcast #mormonism

Join me in Episode 21 as I wrestle with this question: Are Latter-day Saints more passive-aggressive than other people? I've been thinking about this recently as I've been in many conversations where this has come up—particularly how Utah has such a passive-aggressive culture. Some research even says that women could use slightly more passive-aggression than men. I wanted to explore this in more depth, so I'll let you know what I founded out.

It's been an unexpectedly lively five years for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — with institutional changes as well as pandemic shutdowns — and all under the leadership of President Russell M. Nelson. The former heart surgeon became the Utah-based church's 17th president on Jan. 14, 2018, at 93, the second oldest man to step into that role. No matter his age, Nelson was anything but retiring. With an increased emphasis on these “latter days,” he oversaw ambitious plans to perfect the organization, chart new courses, and shift much of the faith's spiritual training and development to individuals and families. Now at 98 and the oldest-ever church president, it's time to examine what has he done. On this week's show, Patrick Mason, head of Mormon history and culture at Utah State University, examines the Nelson presidency — the big changes, the impact, what's working, what isn't and whether the church is better today than when he took over.
One time my dad called me a few days after the seizure happened and I was trying to explain this feeling to him. I said "Dad I don't know what is going on, I have so much gratitude but at the same time I just had this life altering event. I don't know what happened, if I have some scary thing going on, but I just feel so much gratitude." He answered "I really think that is the spirit telling you that He is there with you and you are on the right track." That very second I connected the dots and I realized this was meant to happen. I had just prayed for an answer, and in the weirdest way, it felt so real to me. Ever since then I knew this was my answer.

Being an African American in the church has always been interesting, and to say I have never experienced any prejudice from any members in the church would not be true. My friend Josh Yordy joins us to bravely share his story. Josh talks about how mental health challenges ended his mission early and the positive support he received from his mission therapist, mission leaders, parents, and leaders back home in Flagstaff, Arizona. If you have returned home early or are supporting someone walking this road, Josh's story will help you. Once home, Josh decided to address his sexual orientation, which he had avoided his whole life prior. Part of his journey was serving in the Los Angeles temple for six months in early 2022. Working with a therapist, being in the Temple, and a personal relationship with Heavenly Father helped Josh to accept being queer/bi-sexual in a positive, healthy, and authentic way. Josh talks about how he is navigating his road with both a testimony and being a queer Latter-day Saint. Josh is coming from a place of peace, confidence, faith, and hope—instead of shame and fear. I was deeply moved listening to the spiritual maturity of this 20-year-old man. If you are a queer Latter-day Saint looking for a steady voice of hope, please listen to this podcast. I believe it will help you. And if you are looking to better support queer Latter-day Saints, Josh's insights and experiences will help. Thank you, Josh, for being you. "We went to visit a kid who wanted to serve a mission so his dad comes out and says "I haven't come to church because I'm too embarrassed to come to church. I drink, and I haven't had a job for a year." I got a burning in my bosom and that was the first time I had that, ever. So I knew I needed to speak up and I told him my story. We were standing outside in 26 degree weather teaching them lessons and I couldn't have felt warmer. That family started slowly coming back over the next few months and are now really strong in the gospel."

We've also included the lyrics below:Savior and Son1st VerseLittle Baby, wrapped in swaddling clothes, safely nestled in my arms.I will hold You through the night, I will keep You safe from harm.Little Baby, when the shepherds came, and knelt beside your manger stall,You smiled at them with so much love, King of Kings and Lord of All.ChorusSweet baby boy, your mother's joy, is full tonight, the stars are bright, and Heaven is near.Whate'er You do, the trials You pass through, your mother's love, like God's above, will always be here.2nd VerseAs I look into your sleeping face, I wonder what your eyes will see;Birds and beasts and clouds and olive trees, sunsets on the Sea of Galilee? The lame will rise, and come, and follow You; the blind will look into your eyes,You will make the leper whole again, still the waves and calm the skies.Chorus3rd VerseSomeday, You will die upon a cross, a gift to set all mankind free,Offered freely by a sinless soul, You will rescue even me.When You go, I know my heart will break, once Your sacrifice is done. But tonight I'll hold You close to me, my Savior and Son.3rd ChorusJesus, my child, tender and mild, when You are grown, and I'm alone, though Heaven is near,Whate'er I do, the trials I pass through, I know your love, like God's above, will always be here.Ending ChorusThrough tears and pain, sunshine and rain, Gethsemane, upon the tree, and when your battle's won,I'll still be here, and you'll still be near, I hope You know, I Love You so, my Savior and Son.I hope You know, I Love You so, my Savior and Son.Words and Music Copyright © 2006 Jared C. In the nineteenth century, a fascination with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made Mormons and Mormonism a common trope in French journalism, art, literature, politics, and popular culture. Heather Belnap, Corry Cropper, and Daryl Lee bring to light French representations of Mormonism from the 1830s to 1914, arguing that these portrayals often […] The post Maxwell Institute Podcast #157: Latter-day Saints in the French Imagination, with Corry Cropper, Daryl Lee, and Heather Belnap appeared first on Neal A. My friend Jay Griffith (married father of 3) joins us to share his story of why he stays a Latter-day Saint, how he manages the complexity of being in the church, and why he loves/supports/respects his family and friends who are no longer Latter-day Saints, and lives without fear for their salvation. Jay also briefly talks about his monthly gathering, ThinkAgain-FaithAgain (begun nearly 10 years ago), and his association with Faith Matters. Jay is one of the most spiritual and thoughtful people I know. Jay's insights and life story give all of us ideas about how to see each other as God sees us. Thank you, Jay, for being on the podcast. Honored to call you friend. "I was in a room filled with other people that had been abused as children and they were talking about how worthless they were and how much they didn't deserve anything. I was looking at all these women who were the most beautiful women, that had this beautiful light to them, telling me how worthless they were. I just thought "oh my gosh these are the most beautiful and amazing women - and they have no idea!" Then the spirit spoke to me and said "that is how I feel about you." From them on, that is when I chose to love myself and chose to see myself as a daughter of God."
"I Played Golf With Elder Hales And Other General Authorities" Keith Clearwater is a two-time PGA Tournament winner and professional golfer. There is absolutely a place for LGBTQ+ in the church. That is because this is Jesus Christ's church and they are children of God, it is that simple. There are a lot of facets to it, but it really is that simple. My testimony of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is founded on my testimony of Jesus Christ being my savior. He is the savior of all mankind. Of everyone who is living, who has ever lived, and who will ever live. Anyone in LBGTQ+ community is not excluded from that. It doesn't make it easy, but I know it is possible because of Him.
Chip Oscarson and Phil Fernberg discuss the role Latter-day Saints can play in talking about the environment, stewardship, and climate change, while not making it so political. Should Latter-day Saints be more intentional with this topic? How can we lead out? Does this discussion have a place in our church meetings? My friend Steven Kapp Perry (host on Classical89.org and the “In Good Faith” podcast, married father of four, songwriter, and playwright) joins us to share his story as a gay Latter-day Saint. Steve shares being out for decades to his dear wife Johanne and then recently deciding to come out more broadly to family and close friends. Steve talks about how he has navigated painful church experiences, found his worth/stability in his relationship with Heavenly Father and Jesus, and his love for his wife Johanne. Steve talks about how we can do better (within our doctrine) to better support LGBTQ Latter-day Saints and reminds us these good members are in our ward/family circles citing a recent BYU survey where 13% of students indicated they are something “other than straight”. Steve talks about the March 2023 Tour of Israel he is directing for LGBTQ folks and their families, friends, and allies. I encourage you to check this out (see link in show notes). Thank you, Steve for being on the podcast and all you are doing to create Zion. My friend Karl Beckstrand (single, active LDS writer in his mid-50s) shares his story about being exposed to gay sex at a young age and contending for years between God's will and how he was relating with others. He learned that nothing takes God by surprise, that God can empower us to live our most fulfilling lives, and that everything can be consecrated to our joy—now and forever. Karl discovered that God won't take our social needs away, but he can help us meet them in profound and lasting ways. This is a great resource for anyone with questions about faith and LGBTQIA topics. Karl shares more in his book called More Than 2 Paths: Biblical Secrets to Living Your Most Fulfilling LGBTQIA Life. Thank you, Karl, for being on the podcast. Your story will help so many. Thanks for your courage to share it. I encourage others to listen to this episode and read your book.
